Lihue, Kauai, HI - 5/21/08 - After serving for two years, Derek Kawakami has tendered his
resignation from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative's Board of Directors, effective May 20, 2008.
Kawakami stated in a written letter that he will pursue a seat on the Kauai County Council and
foresees time constraints that may hinder board service.
“While my passion for the membership and the island’s energy resource is fervent and evident in our
past accomplishments; my passion for the greater good of our island at this critical point has given me
an overwhelming desire to serve our island on a broader scale,” said Kawakami.
"Director 'the Prodigy' Kawakami has proved to be a moving force on the board at KIUC. He came
in with an open mind and is a quick learner," said Dennis Esaki, chairman of the board of directors,
and friend. "He fights for what he believes is right, or as he always said what is 'pono'. Although his
loss will be felt on the KIUC board, I am sure that Derek will continue to be a leader in our
community," Esaki concluded.
Director Kawakami served the KIUC membership as Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee,
playing a key role in the collaborative effort to establish a 15-year Strategic Plan, which looks to
ensure reliable power, fair rates and sustainable energy. He also served as Second Vice Chair and
member of the Executive Committee, and as a member of the Government Relations/Legislative
Affairs Committee.
"Derek Kawakami served KIUC’s members and employees well as a Director of our co-op. He will
be missed as a board member but we expect he will always be involved in our cooperative. We wish
him well in his campaign for a County Council seat," said Randy Hee, KIUC president and CEO.
KIUC to Begin Rebuild of Lydgate Substation
Lihue, Kauai, HI - 8/13/08 - KIUC will begin the rebuild of the Lydgate Substation next week.
Lydgate Substation which serves portions of Wailua and Kapa`a, has suffered from the corrosive
effects of salt laden on-shore trade winds and it is time to rebuild the station. The Lydgate
Substation is being built to minimize the effects of the corrosive environment and will include
increased capacity to handle future growth in the area. Existing loads are being transferred to
Kapa`a and Kapaia Substations during the re-construction period.
“We are looking towards long-term solutions instead of quick fixes,” said Jack Leavitt, KIUC
Transmission & Distribution Manager. "It's an investment; and a quantum leap in reliability."
Leavitt explains the newly built substation will be an indoor design utilizing gas insulated
switchgear (GIS) for the transmission section, while metal-clad vacuum switchgear will handle
distribution energy from two new power transformers to be installed on the Mauka side of the
building such that they will be shielded them from the corrosive trade winds. All protective
relaying will be microprocessor based, and fiber optics will supply communications.
TOMCO Corporation was the successful bidder and was selected as the contractor; the
construction phase should be completed by mid-2009.
Lihue, Kauai, HI – 11/25/08 – Kaua`i Island Utility Cooperative’s (KIUC) announces its rates
have dropped for the month of December. Residential effective rates dropped to $0.27453 per
kilowatt hour for the month of December.
Decreases in our monthly effective electrical rates reflect decreases in our monthly fuel costs,
because the energy adjustment component captures the cost difference between the current fuel
costs and the fuel costs that were used to calculate the base rates.
“As the cost of oil drops, our rates drop,” said KIUC President & CEO Randy Hee. “We are
encouraged by the steady decline of our monthly residential effective rate, which began
following our all-time high of $0.49 per kilowatt hour in August.”
KIUC Board Chairman Dennis Esaki added, “The lower residential effective rate should be
welcome news for our members who have seen their bills rise steadily in the past few years as
the price of oil surged.”
Lihue, Kauai, HI – 12/18/08 - Kaua`i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Board of Directors agreed in
their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday to enter into a collaborative agreement with Pacific West
Energy, LLC (PacWest) to achieve established and necessary renewable energy goals and greenhouse
gas reductions.
PacWest plans to develop an approximately 20-Megawatt Biomass–to–Energy Project on Kauai to
provide electrical capacity and energy to KIUC.
The agreement is a good faith effort between both parties to negotiate and enter into a Power
Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the project on terms mutually acceptable to PacWest and the
Co-op. This innovative agreement helps pave the way for KIUC to build on our current
renewable energy needs to help us meet our strategic plan goal of becoming more than 50
percent renewable within the next 15 years. Our strategic plan allows us to meet the goal of
transforming Hawai`i’s energy portfolio into a renewable energy mix in support of the
Hawai`i Clean Energy Initiative’s commitment to moving away from reliance on fossil fuels.
“PacWest is looking forward to working with KIUC to further Kaua`i’s renewable portfolio,”
said William Maloney, President of PacWest.
“KIUC has long acknowledged that significant investments in new additional renewable
energy generation will be required for us to achieve not only our strategic goals, but to meet
Hawai`i’s Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS),” said Dennis Esaki, board chair. “Currently
KIUC’s plan is to significantly exceed the state’s RPS, because we’re confident this direction
will best benefit the Kauai community.”
