Traditional Plex Online implementation programs begin with a conference 

room pilot. During this initial phase of the implementation, testing various 

hardware options helps determine what best fits your environment and

Production Station 

Most production environments are more challenging than a typical office 

training environment. With single-part or multiple-part stages of 

implementations, it is often necessary to enclose your training station in a 

more robust cabinet or enclosure. Plex offers a low cost mobile cabinet to 

easily house your training station. Contact the Plex IT Services Group for 

a NEMA rated enclosure if needed for your environment. A mobile station 

with wireless network capability allows you to position the station within 

your production environment. Determine the most optimal location before 

allocating effort or resources to run network wiring to your plant locations.

Basic Shipping and Receiving Workstation 

Plex Online offers built-in capabilities to handle different modes of interaction with the shipping and receiving areas 

of the system. Choose the method that is right for your specific requirements. Options are driven by the volume of 

shipping and receiving activities or by the size of the items being processed for receipt or shipment. The following 

configuration is for a low-volume shop with small to medium sized products, with the 

operator’s workstation in proximity to the dock. This option incorporates a standard 

workstation with a cordless wedge style scanner. The operator walks only a short 

distance (up to 50’) to scan the products and returns to the workstation to finish 

transactions. Note that this station does not include a touch screen monitor, since the 

shipping and receiving screens do not optimize interaction with the user.

Visitor Lobby Kiosk 

The Plex Online Visitor Log easily tracks guests entering and leaving your facilities, either as a self-service Kiosk or as 

administered by a receptionist. The system displays current and archived records of who is in your building at all times, and 

who they are there to see. The system supports security and evacuation policy planning. Stations are equipped to 

automatically print barcoded visitor badges for ease of identification.

Work stations 

Plex Systems now offers equipment for sterile environments such as hospitals, food processing/handling or any 

place where a clean environment is required. These devices are fully waterproof/dustproof and certified for 

medical environments. 

Thin clients 

Plex Systems now offers thin clients with Anti-bacterial cases that are UL60601-1 medically certified. These 

devices are fully integrated thin clients with an optional IP65 rated fully waterproof/dustproof sealed touch 

screen, stand mounted but they can be mounted to the wall, from a ceiling or any Vesa complaint mounting. 

Other options include 802.11 a/b/g wireless and Magnetic Stripe readers. 

The UL60601-1 certified DT519MD is a fully

Thin client computing devices 

Thin client computer devices are a great alternative to traditional PCs in production environments with extreme

Touch screen monitors 

Touch screen monitors replace a traditional mouse or keyboard for faster, simpler data entry using a 

secondary input cable from the monitor to the USB, mouse, or serial ports. Touch screen monitors are suitable 

in a dirty production environment or when operators are required to wear gloves. Plex Online screens are 

optimized for the touch screen interface, and offer a variety of technologies. The most common of the touch 

screen technologies are the resistive and the capacitive touch methods. The resistive is a cost-effective method 

that utilizes a film layer on the surface of the monitor. The capacitive method is more durable and suitability 

for harsh environments, bypassing the surface condition. Select a machine mountable type screen or a self

Plex online time and attendance 

The Plex Online Time and Attendance module offers a variety of hardware for clocking in/out of your facility. The simplest 

method is the standard Plex Production workstation that is described under the “Plex Online Production Recording” section 

of this catalog. Using the standard production station, the operator either scans their ID badge or types in username and 

password to complete the clock in/out process. To improve employee time tracking and streamline the process, additional

Biometric time and attendance 

The Biometric Hand Punch clock system provides employee security and identification. This system uses a 3D image of 

the employee’s hand as the method to verify identity. These devices eliminate the possibility of time fraud or “buddy

General information on barcode printing 

Barcode printing, or label printing, is a method to print a barcode font onto a label for ease of error-free automatic scanning. 

There are a variety of barcode fonts in use. The standard manufacturing barcode requirement is a 3 of 9 font. Printers and 

scanners must support the font required in a specific application, and also support the ZPL programming language. Plex 

Online uses the ZPL language due to its speed, flexibility, and format consistency for an optimal label printing process. ZPL 

is the native printing language of the Zebra brand printers, and supports other printer manufacturers. Also consider label

General information on barcode scanning 

Barcoding is easily handled when data is read automatically and without error. 

Plex Online achieves this using a special font read by a scanner device. To select 

the right solution for your application, consider the types of barcodes received 

from vendors, along with customer labeling requirements for finished products. 

The most common barcode used in manufacturing is the linear 3 of 9 barcode font,

Email hosting by plex systems 

Plex Online offers a robust and feature-rich mail system. Based on the Microsoft Exchange e-mail system, the 

solution offers the advanced features of the Microsoft Outlook mail client. This system also leverages the Outlook 

Web Access (OWA) version of Outlook, which is integrated into the Plex Online menu system letting users avoid 

multiple log-ins. Plex Online hosts thousands of mail accounts on the Microsoft Exchange platform, allowing 

access with the full Outlook Client (using RTP over HTTP) or via the OWA menu link. 

For BlackBerry users, Plex Systems offers the BlackBerry Enterprise server for seamless integration between 

Exchange and BlackBerry devices. This is also available for Microsoft Mobile OS smart phones utilizing the Active 

Sync software associated with the Mobile OS phones. 

Barracuda SPAM technology supports Plex Online mail systems, filtering all incoming mail and eliminating 

unwanted spam. The technology stops unwanted traffic from clogging internet connections, and helps protect 

against viruses.

Increase the reliability of your Plex Online and PLC integration with Return Path Redundancy. 

If your implementation of Plex Online is using PLC Integration or Web Services this is something you 

should be considering to ensure the Plex Online Data Center can talk back to your local servers with 

redundancy. Plex has Global Site Selector capability from our Data Center that will allow you to create 

a fault tolerant path to a secondary server. This is very useful in the event of a server hardware failure 

at your location so that Plex can redirect the Web Services traffic to a secondary server and eliminate 

any outage in your local web services. 

Global Site Selector requires that you have static IP address assigned to each of your local Web 

Services servers so that Plex can direct the returning traffic from our Data Center to your local server. 

The Plex Global Site Selector (GSS) will constantly be checking the status of the path to these two 

servers so that it knows when a redirected path needs to be taken. 

To learn more about this option, please submit a USR in Plex Online and assign it to the IT Services 

team.

Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator 

Do you have locations around the globe? 

Akamai Dynamice Sit Accelerator is an option to help improve your performance (latency) when using Plex 

Online. Plex has partnered with Akamai Solutions in order to provide a new URL that can be used from distant 

locations to access Plex Online by using the Global Akamai infrastructure with Akamai Dynamic Site 

Accelerators. Plex has found that some countries, such as China, the Akamai service can be very beneficial 

for system performance. 

How it works: 

Without going into a high level of detail, Akamai caches static content that appears in the Plex Online screens. 

For example a frame, border, or logo (things that don’t change very often) are stored locally on the nearest 

global Akamai server. Then when you are accessing a page in Plex Online from your remote site, it connects 

to the nearest Akamai global network server and grabs the static content. It then goes to get the dynamic 

(changing) information from the Plex Online datacenter, reducing the amount of data needed to populate the 

screen. Of course at multiple intervals throughout the day the static content is verified and updated also so 

nothing gets out of date. The Akamai network is also able to route around slowdowns and outages on the 

Internet in order to ensure a quicker path to the Plex Online datacenter. The end result is faster screen 

updates and happier users. Plex has seen increases in performance, as much as 30%, when using this 

system. 

The basic pricing structure for this option is $8.75 per user, per month, to use the Akamai URL for Plex Online.
