Plex Workstations
PAGE 4
Training Station
Traditional Plex Cloud implementation programs begin with a conference room pilot. During this initial
phase of the implementation, testing various hardware options helps determine what best fits your
environment and suits your end users. Deploying a mobile Plex workstation is proven to be the most
effective testing method. Users learn how the system will work during training as well as implementation.
The following is our recommendation of a Conference Room Pilot station configured with the most
commonly used peripherals.
Open Cart (Assembly Required) $ 190.80
Production/Shipping & Receiving Station
Most production environments are more challenging than a typical office setting. With single-part or
multiple-part stages of implementations, it is often necessary to enclose your workstations in a more
robust cabinet or enclosure. Plex offers a low cost mobile cabinet to easily house your workstation.
Contact the Plex IT Services Group for a NEMA rated enclosure if needed for your environment. A
mobile station with wireless network capability allows you to position the station within your production
or shipping & receiving environment. Determine the most optimal location before allocating effort or
resources to run network wiring to your plant locations. Touch screen monitors are recommended for the
production stations, however not necessary for most shipping & receiving stations.
Thin Client Computing Devices
PAGE 7
Thin client computer devices are a great alternative
to traditional PCs in production environments with extreme
temperatures, dirt and other challenges. These robust
devices have no moving parts and do not generate heat,
eliminating the challenges of plugged, dirty fans or hard
drive failures. Thin client computer
devices are re-imaged within minutes, and use a remote
management client application to easily add images to a
standardized desktop configuration if required. The thin
clients run an embedded version
of Windows so they operate as a PC for easy user
interface. Plex offers several best-in-class models.
Touch Screen Monitors
PAGE 9
Touch screen monitors replace a traditional mouse or
keyboard for faster, simpler data entry using a secondary
input cable from the monitor to the USB, mouse, or
serial ports. Touch screen monitors are suitable in a dirty
production environment or when operators are required
to wear gloves. Plex screens are optimized for the touch
screen interface, and offer a variety of technologies. The
most common of the touch screen technologies are the
resistive and the capacitive touch methods. The resistive
is a cost-effective method that utilizes a film layer on the
surface of the monitor. The capacitive method is more
durable and suitable for harsh environments, bypassing the
surface condition. Select a machine mountable type screen
or a self supporting stand as needed. Contact the Plex IT
Services Group for help in choosing the right model.
Plex Time and Attendance
PAGE 11
The Plex Time and Attendance module offers a variety of
hardware for clocking in/out of your facility. The simplest
method is the standard Plex Production workstation that is
described under the “Plex Production Recording” section
of this catalog. Using the standard production station, the
operator either scans the ID badge or types in username
and password to complete the clock in/out process. To
improve employee time tracking and streamline the process,
additional input devices can be attached to the workstation.
Biometric Time and Attendance
PAGE 12
The Biometric Hand Punch clock system provides employee
security and identification. This system uses a 3D image
of the employee’s hand as the method to verify identity.
These devices eliminate the possibility of time fraud or
“buddy punching” – when employees clock for each other.
Employees simply enter their ID number (or scan a badge)
then place their hand in the reader to authenticate identity
and trigger the clock in/out process. These devices also
deliver security access with built in electrical contacts used
to ring bells, buzzers, or unlock doors. Components include
the handpunch clocks and HandLink communications
software. The PC running the software does not need to
be near the clocks and should be located in a secure area
for administration purposes. The communications software
polls the clocks and sends the clock in/out transactions
to Plex. Requires web services and associated modules.
Barcode Printers
PAGE 13
Print and Apply Barcode Printers
Print & Apply Barcode Printers are commonly used in
high volume production environments. These printers are
incorporated into production work cells to print barcode
labels, and apply them directly onto products without
operator Intervention. Before purchasing these types of
printers consult with Plex and/or your production equipment
systems integrator. Contact the Plex IT Services Group for
more details.
General Information on Barcode Printing
Barcode printing, or label printing, is a method to print a
barcode font onto a label for ease of error-free automatic
scanning. There are a variety of barcode fonts in use.
The standard manufacturing barcode requirement is a
3 of 9 font. Printers and scanners must support the font
required in a specific application, and also support the ZPL
programming language.
Plex uses the ZPL language due to its speed, flexibility,
and format consistency for an optimal label printing
process. ZPL is the native printing language of the Zebra
brand printers, and supports other printer manufacturers.
Also consider label size, desired speed of printing, label
stock material requirements, label stock capacity, and the
manufacturing environment.
Barcode Labeling & Warehouse Sign Solutions
PAGE 18
Plex is proud to announce a new partnership with Premier Print. With this new partnership, Plex is able to offer preprinted
barcode labeling and sign solutions for warehouse and logistics operations.
Premier Print has partnered with the leading material suppliers in the industry including 3M and Avery Dennison to develop
proprietary materials for specific product solutions. Current material solutions include:
• Paper
• Polypropylene
• Retro-Reflective
• Polyester
• Anodized Aluminum
Premier has material that is specifically designed to resist chemicals and solvents, and adhesives that adhere to any
surface, including low surface energy, under extremely hot and cold conditions, and scan every time!
How do we determine what you need in a label?
We can help determine the best material, symbology, and mil size for your application based on a series of questions:
• What will the Application and Service temperature be?
• What is the surface to which the label will be applied (corrugated, plastic, glass, wood, metal)?
• What is the condition of that surface (hot, cold, smooth, rough, clean, dirty)?
• How will the label be read (distance, method, scan model)?
We can utilize UL approved substrate and laminate to meet the most demanding label applications.
Contact Plex Systems IT Services for details.
Warehouse Label Installation
Warehouse Labels
From LPNs to rack/bin location, we manufacture laminated solutions for a wide
range of applications. Product ID and pallet ID are crucial in any supply chain
when it comes to product recalls, which is why Fortune 500 companies rely on
us to manage their data files and provide a “no duplicates” guarantee. We know
what labels, and product, shipped where and when through our number sequence
tracking system. And when it comes to rack labels, multi-color labels provide
superior tier identification, while magnetic labels provide “flexible” locations to
expand or relocate positions throughout a facility. We help you define your needs
and create the solution that meets your needs.
Warehouse Signs
We offer a wide range of sign solutions manufactured with a proprietary blend
of PVC designed for indoor and outdoor application which won’t crack, fade or
become brittle over time. Designs include:
• Flat Signs
• Two-sided Signs
• Dock Door Signs
• Magnetic Labels
• Bent Signs
• Floor Labels
• Aisle Signs
We utilize automated application equipment to apply barcode labels cost
effectively. Retro-reflective material provides scan distances up to 50 feet,
and polyester labels provide a cost-effective solution for short range scanning
environments. We will engineer a label that will fit your existing scanning needs!
Manufacturing/Tote Labels
Whether you are tracking a production part through the assembly process or
a tote through the shipping process, barcoded labels have to provide durable
identification. We provide a great solution quickly, and cost effectively, while
providing the high degree of visibility you need throughout the shipping or
production cycle.
Installation – Warehouse Signs and Labels
Purchasing signs and labels is only 1/2 the battle. When you need someone that
can finish the job quickly and cost effectively, we can provide complete installation
services. We provide a turnkey solution with more than 40 years of combined sign
and label installation expertise. From cable or conduit installation, to aisle sign and
floor plate installation, we can offer a full range of services. If you want to utilize
some of your own staff, we will provide the supervision expertise, and manage
your labor force to finish the project quickly. And with our installation service, you
are always guaranteed of getting all your location installed correctly the first time,
even if you miss or add locations at the last minute.
Plex Mobile Screens
Plex has many mobile screens written
to utilize pocket PC devices within your
company. Whether it’s inventory tracking
or movement, shipping and receiving,
purchasing stock or tracking your tooling
inventory, using a portable scanning
device and Plex mobile screens will make
your manufacturing environment more
productive while maintaining a Lean shop
floor.
Mobile Printing in Shipping and Receiving
For increased efficiency, print labels directly from a handheld
device. Plex allows mobile users to print to a network printer.
Printers may be located anywhere in your facility, or even
strapped to an operator’s belt. This arrangement is convenient
when labeling incoming product not from suppliers, or for
outgoing product requiring customer-specific labeling on the
shipping dock. The Zebra mobile belt-style printer works best
with the Plex application. Label printers support the ZPL printing
language, which is native to most Zebra printers.
Handheld PC Applications in Shipping and Receiving
PAGE 21
When larger sized products are shipped or received in
greater volumes from multiple shipping docks, a handheld
PC type scanner is the ideal solution. In this setting Plex
screens run on mobile computing handheld devices. This
gives your operators more flexibility to interact with Plex.
Handheld computing devices require a wireless network
infrastructure in your facility. Please refer to the section on
Wireless Networks in this catalog for more details. A mobile
handheld device does not replace the need for a basic
workstation in the
shipping / receiving area, but complements its use to speed
the process. With the handheld device, operators scan
products from a shipment/receipt without having to go back
and forth to the local workstation to confirm that each item
was scanned properly. The mobile device screens allow for
confirmation and transaction feedback. These handheld
devices can be used in other
areas of your facility, such as
material movement or inventory
control. The following are the
specific models that work
effectively within Plex facilities.
Barcode Scanners
PAGE 23
General Information on Barcode Scanning
Barcoding is easily handled when data
is read automatically and without error.
Plex achieves this using a special font
read by a scanner device. To select
the right solution for your application,
consider the types of barcodes received
from vendors, along with customer
labeling requirements for finished
products. The most common barcode
used in manufacturing is the linear 3 of 9
barcode font, but often a 2 dimensional
(2D) or a more permanent etched
barcode is required. This catalog covers
the standard linear barcodes and 2D
application options. Contact the Plex IT
Services Group for assistance with your
application.
Corded Wedge Scanners
The corded (tethered) wedge
barcode scanner is most
cost effective for a range of
applications. The scanner
connects directly to the
PC via a phone type cord
with a USB connection for
keyboard ports utilizing what
is called a “wedge” method
of communication. It scans
the barcode and passes that
number directly into the current
field on the screen of the PC
just as if you had typed it
yourself. The following are the
most common models used by
Quality Recording Equipment
Plex Gage Integration
The Plex Quality System eliminates cumbersome manual data
entry, and reduces the likelihood of introducing errors from
transposed data. Plex integrates electronic equipped gages
directly via a USB or RS-232 communication port using thirdparty
PC wedge software. Hardware selection depends on
the type and quantity of electronic gages in use at the station.
Solutions are as simple as attaching one gage directly to the
USB/RS232 port with the appropriate cable; or attaching
multiple gages, a multiplexor box or additional cables. The
third-party wedge software automatically translates and formats
data from the USB/RS-232 port. The operator selects which
gage to read using a simple dial, pushbutton, remote switch or
foot pedal switch – whatever best suits your application. The
following list shows components of a gage integration solution.
Plex is a hosted application that provides real-time data.
Deploying a wireless network infrastructure and mobile
devices directly to the shop floor makes the advantages
of real time data more available to the enterprise. With a
wireless network, all transactions are captured as they
happen on the floor, eliminating error and improving the
accuracy of inventories.
Plex IT Services Group can help you determine the right
wireless solution for your needs. These are the most
common uses of the wireless networks with
Plex customers:
• Receiving Department: Scan vendor supplied items or raw
goods as they enter the building.
• Shipping Department: Scan finished goods onto customer
shipments for positive identification of items shipped.
• Materials Movement: Scan all material movement within
your facility by ensuring all fork trucks are equipped with RF
scanners. Never lose another container of materials within your
facility.
• Physical Inventory: Reduce the time it takes to conduct a physical
inventory by equipping your materials management staff with
the ability to scan product at their current location. Improve your
inventory accuracy and eliminate lost materials.
• Cycle Counting: Speed the process of cycle counting. Allow for
a more frequent cycle process on hard to track or high value
items.
• Production: Implement lean manufacturing and reduce waste
in the process. Quickly move a production workstation to an
alternate location during a workshop. No longer run a new wire
to test a new work cell layout. With a wireless network, simply
move the station to its new home.
• Mobile Printing: Mobile scanners and wireless printers in the
shipping department make last minute re-labeling on the
shipping dock a simple process.
• Quality Control: Quality staff gain the ability to walk the plant
and conduct inspections where processes take place. They
benefit from the added mobility using laptops or tablet PCs with
wireless network cards.
• Mobile Meetings: Improve connectivity of all attendees in
a meeting by providing wireless in your conference rooms.
Improve safety by eliminating cords.
• Visitor Access & Security: Provide a separate, secure wireless
network setup for visitors while protecting your IT network.
VoIP Telephone Systems
PAGE 35
As technology changes, more equipment will be controlled
using data networks. VoIP phone systems help meet
this demand. Whether you’re expanding current systems
capabilities or installing a new system at a new facility,
leverage existing networks and cut costs with IP phone
systems. Plex offers the field-proven FortiVoice phone
switch and IP handsets. This advanced phone system
allows use of older, analog handsets and analog lines,
along with newer style IP handsets and Ethernet networks
already in the field. Manage the required number of
handsets and lines by selecting the most appropriate
model. Each FortiVoice system includes sophisticated
call-handling features to reduce communications costs and
stay connected; multi-level auto attendants; built-in voice
mail; and innovative remote extensions. This sophisticated
solution is extremely easy to implement and use. Plex helps
you determine the solution that offers optimized scalability.
From 2 to 64 users per location, the system scales to
fit most organizations with hybrid connections, network
compatibility (traditional and/or VoIP) and phones (analog
and/or IP). Up to four FortiVoice units can be networked
together on your LAN for a maximum capacity of 32 phone
lines, 64 extensions and 32
VoIP trunks.
There are several components that will make up the entire
VoIP system. There is the appropriate size switch, the
phone handsets (analog or IP) and the wiring involved
in connecting them all together. Depending upon your
existing size and growth projections, Plex can assist you
with selecting the proper switch and phone handsets. The
following is a list of the different models of switches that are
Plex PLC / Machine Integration Overview
PAGE 38
Plex PLC/Machine Integration allows for the exchanging
of messages between Plex and a system located at the
customer’s site in real-time. Messages exist to allow:
• Tracking Workcenter Statuses
• Communicating Workcenter Setup Changes
• Requesting Workcenter cycle counts from the
PLC when an operator records production in the control
panel
• Automated recording of production when triggered by the
PLC
• Automated printing of labels for produced containers (Line
Side Labeling)
• Sending of Quality data (part or process characteristics) to
the Plex SPC Checksheets system
The customer’s local system usually consists of a SCADA
server (or equivalent system that can communicate with the
PLCs) that can also behave as a Web Services server. This
local system is responsible for monitoring events on the
PLCs, translating the data and sending messages to Plex
based on these events.
Integration points have been defined within Plex to trigger
outbound messages from Plex to the customer’s local
system. The customer’s local system is responsible for
receiving and processing these messages sent from Plex
and performing the appropriate actions against the PLC they
are addressed to.
Plex PLC / Machine Integration Overview (continued)
PAGE 39
The PLC/Machine Integration, Settings/Recipes (SCADA) &
Web Services modules are required for access to integration
services. Integration services are billed based on actual
usage.
All setup and configuration of these Modules, Menus,
Firewall, AD credentials, and configuration of business logic
to support the customer’s business processes is performed
on a T&M basis.
Any modifications required to support the customer’s
business processes are performed on a T&M basis.
Any of the items that are designated as “Customer
Responsibility” in the diagram above is the responsibility
of the customer. This includes the Hardware/Software of
customer’s local system, the installation, configuration
& Testing of the customer’s local system and roll out of
functionality within the Customer’s facilities. Any support
provided by Plex is performed on a T&M basis.
If requested, Plex can provide the name of an integration
partner who can provide these items and services.
Inbound Messages - From PLC/Machine to Plex
Plex has defined a set of Web Services to support the
following inbound functions:
• Workcenter Status Tracking (Production Web Service)
– Allows Status, Reason, Description to be sent from
customer’s system to Plex. A Workcenter Log record
is created
• Production Recording “Push Production” (Production
Web Service) – Allows simplified production to be
recorded after being validated against the Control Panel
setup
• Label Printing (Inventory Web Service) – Provides a
formatted IPL or ZPL label for a requested Serial No
& Workcenter
• Data Collection (Quality Web Service) – Allows a
SPC Checksheet to be created
Outbound Messages - From Plex Online to PLC/Machine
Integration points exist in Plex to allow the following
outbound messages to be triggered. These have been
developed to support the Web Service developed by one of
Plex’s Integration partners. The PLC Web Service is specific
to that integration partner. Altering the business logic to
support an alternative provider can be done on a T&M
basis.
• Workcenter Status Tracking (PLC Web Service)
– Allows a change to the Workcenter Status to be sent to
the customer’s system. Customer defines behavior once
received.
• Control Panel Integrated Production & Scrap (PLC Web
Service) – Allows the Plex Control Panel to pull counter
readings directly from the PLC when the operator records
production. The scrap quantity entered in the Control
Panel are used to adjust actual pcs recorded.
• Setup Change Over (PLC Web Service) – Selecting a
new Setup from the control Panel Dispatch list sends a
message containing Workcenter, Part, Job, Job Quantity,
Completed Quantity to the customer’s system.
• New Container (PLC Web Service) – Sends the standard
pack quantity to the customer’s system
Return Path Redundancy for PLC and Web Services
PAGE 40
Increase the Reliability of your Plex and PLC Integration with
Return Path Redundancy.
If your implementation of Plex is using PLC Integration or
Web Services this is something you should be considering
to ensure the Plex Manufacturing Cloud Data Center can
talk back to your local servers with redundancy. Plex has
Global Traffic Manager (GTM) capability from our Data
Center that will allow you to create a fault tolerant path to a
secondary server. This is very useful in the event of a server
hardware failure at your location so that Plex can redirect
the Web Services traffic to a secondary server and eliminate
any outage in your local web services.
Global Traffic Manager requires that you have static IP
address assigned to each of your local Web Services servers
so that Plex can direct the returning traffic from our Data
Center to your local server. The Plex Global Traffic Manager
will constantly be checking the status of the path to these
two servers so that it knows when
a redirected path needs to be taken.
To learn more about this option, please submit a USR in Plex
and assign it to the IT Services team.
such as China.
How it Works:
Without going into a high level of detail, Akamai caches
static content that appears on the Plex screens. For
example a frame, border, or logo (things that don’t change
very often) are stored locally on the nearest global Akamai
server. Then when you are accessing a page in Plex from
your remote site, it connects to the nearest Akamai global
network server and grabs the static content. It then goes
to get the dynamic (changing) information from the Plex
Manufacturing Cloud data center, reducing the amount of
data needed to populate the screen. Of course at multiple
intervals throughout the day the static content is verified
and updated also so nothing gets out of date. The Akamai
network is also able to route around slowdowns and
outages on the Internet in order to ensure a quicker path to
the Plex Manufacturing Cloud data center. The end result
is faster screen updates and happier users. Plex has seen
increases in performance, as much as 30%, when using this
system.
The basic pricing structure for this option is $8.75 per user,
per month, to use the Akamai URL for Plex. To get an idea
of your monthly subscription for this service you would need
to look at the number of employees accessing this URL from
outside of the USA. Please talk to your Plex salesperson, or
contact the
