Most production environments are more challenging than a typical office setting. With single-part or 

multiple-part stages of implementations, it is often necessary to enclose your workstations in a more 

robust cabinet or enclosure. Plex offers a low cost mobile cabinet to easily house your workstation. 

Contact the Plex IT Services Group for a NEMA rated enclosure if needed for your environment. A 

mobile station with wireless network capability allows you to position the station within your production 

or shipping & receiving environment. Determine the most optimal location before allocating effort or 

resources to run network wiring to your plant locations. Touch screen monitors are recommended for the 

production stations, however not necessary for most shipping & receiving stations.

Touch screen monitors replace a traditional mouse or 

keyboard for faster, simpler data entry using a secondary 

input cable from the monitor to the USB, mouse, or 

serial ports. Touch screen monitors are suitable in a dirty 

production environment or when operators are required 

to wear gloves. Plex screens are optimized for the touch 

screen interface, and offer a variety of technologies. The 

most common of the touch screen technologies are the 

resistive and the capacitive touch methods. The resistive 

is a cost-effective method that utilizes a film layer on the 

surface of the monitor. The capacitive method is more 

durable and suitable for harsh environments, bypassing the 

surface condition. Select a machine mountable type screen

The Plex Time and Attendance module offers a variety of 

hardware for clocking in/out of your facility. The simplest 

method is the standard Plex Production workstation that is 

described under the “Plex Production Recording” section 

of this catalog. Using the standard production station, the 

operator either scans the ID badge or types in username 

and password to complete the clock in/out process. To 

improve employee time tracking and streamline the process,

Biometric Time and Attendance

The Biometric Hand Punch clock system provides employee 

security and identification. This system uses a 3D image 

of the employee’s hand as the method to verify identity. 

These devices eliminate the possibility of time fraud or 

“buddy punching” – when employees clock for each other. 

Employees simply enter their ID number (or scan a badge) 

then place their hand in the reader to authenticate identity 

and trigger the clock in/out process. These devices also 

deliver security access with built in electrical contacts used 

to ring bells, buzzers, or unlock doors. Components include 

the handpunch clocks and HandLink communications 

software. The PC running the software does not need to 

be near the clocks and should be located in a secure area 

for administration purposes. The communications software 

polls the clocks and sends the clock in/out transactions 

to Plex. Requires web services and associated modules.

Print and Apply Barcode Printers 

Print & Apply Barcode Printers are commonly used in 

high volume production environments. These printers are 

incorporated into production work cells to print barcode 

labels, and apply them directly onto products without 

operator Intervention. Before purchasing these types of 

printers consult with Plex and/or your production equipment

General Information on Barcode Printing 

Barcode printing, or label printing, is a method to print a 

barcode font onto a label for ease of error-free automatic 

scanning. There are a variety of barcode fonts in use. 

The standard manufacturing barcode requirement is a 

3 of 9 font. Printers and scanners must support the font 

required in a specific application, and also support the ZPL 

programming language. 

Plex uses the ZPL language due to its speed, flexibility, 

and format consistency for an optimal label printing 

process. ZPL is the native printing language of the Zebra 

brand printers, and supports other printer manufacturers. 

Also consider label size, desired speed of printing, label 

stock material requirements, label stock capacity, and the 

manufacturing environment.

Plex Gage Integration 

The Plex Quality System eliminates cumbersome manual data 

entry, and reduces the likelihood of introducing errors from 

transposed data. Plex integrates electronic equipped gages 

directly via a USB or RS-232 communication port using thirdparty 

PC wedge software. Hardware selection depends on 

the type and quantity of electronic gages in use at the station. 

Solutions are as simple as attaching one gage directly to the 

USB/RS232 port with the appropriate cable; or attaching

Plex PLC / Machine Integration Overview

Plex PLC/Machine Integration allows for the exchanging 

of messages between Plex and a system located at the 

customer’s site in real-time. Messages exist to allow: 

• Tracking Workcenter Statuses 

• Communicating Workcenter Setup Changes 

• Requesting Workcenter cycle counts from the 

PLC when an operator records production in the control 

panel 

• Automated recording of production when triggered by the 

PLC 

• Automated printing of labels for produced containers (Line 

Side Labeling) 

• Sending of Quality data (part or process characteristics) to 

the Plex SPC Checksheets system 

The customer’s local system usually consists of a SCADA 

server (or equivalent system that can communicate with the 

PLCs) that can also behave as a Web Services server. This 

local system is responsible for monitoring events on the 

PLCs, translating the data and sending messages to Plex 

based on these events. 

Integration points have been defined within Plex to trigger 

outbound messages from Plex to the customer’s local 

system. The customer’s local system is responsible for 

receiving and processing these messages sent from Plex 

and performing the appropriate actions against the PLC they 

are addressed to.

The PLC/Machine Integration, Settings/Recipes (SCADA) & 

Web Services modules are required for access to integration 

services. Integration services are billed based on actual 

usage. 

All setup and configuration of these Modules, Menus, 

Firewall, AD credentials, and configuration of business logic 

to support the customer’s business processes is performed 

on a T&M basis. 

Any modifications required to support the customer’s 

business processes are performed on a T&M basis. 

Any of the items that are designated as “Customer 

Responsibility” in the diagram above is the responsibility 

of the customer. This includes the Hardware/Software of 

customer’s local system, the installation, configuration 

& Testing of the customer’s local system and roll out of 

functionality within the Customer’s facilities. Any support 

provided by Plex is performed on a T&M basis. 

If requested, Plex can provide the name of an integration 

partner who can provide these items and services. 

Inbound Messages - From PLC/Machine to Plex 

Plex has defined a set of Web Services to support the 

following inbound functions: 

• Workcenter Status Tracking (Production Web Service) 

– Allows Status, Reason, Description to be sent from 

customer’s system to Plex. A Workcenter Log record 

is created 

• Production Recording “Push Production” (Production 

Web Service) – Allows simplified production to be 

recorded after being validated against the Control Panel 

setup 

• Label Printing (Inventory Web Service) – Provides a 

formatted IPL or ZPL label for a requested Serial No 

& Workcenter 

• Data Collection (Quality Web Service) – Allows a 

SPC Checksheet to be created 

Outbound Messages - From Plex Online to PLC/Machine 

Integration points exist in Plex to allow the following 

outbound messages to be triggered. These have been 

developed to support the Web Service developed by one of 

Plex’s Integration partners. The PLC Web Service is specific 

to that integration partner. Altering the business logic to 

support an alternative provider can be done on a T&M 

basis. 

• Workcenter Status Tracking (PLC Web Service) 

– Allows a change to the Workcenter Status to be sent to 

the customer’s system. Customer defines behavior once 

received. 

• Control Panel Integrated Production & Scrap (PLC Web 

Service) – Allows the Plex Control Panel to pull counter 

readings directly from the PLC when the operator records 

production. The scrap quantity entered in the Control 

Panel are used to adjust actual pcs recorded. 

• Setup Change Over (PLC Web Service) – Selecting a 

new Setup from the control Panel Dispatch list sends a 

message containing Workcenter, Part, Job, Job Quantity, 

Completed Quantity to the customer’s system. 

• New Container (PLC Web Service) – Sends the standard 

pack quantity to the customer’s system

Increase the Reliability of your Plex and PLC Integration with 

Return Path Redundancy. 

If your implementation of Plex is using PLC Integration or 

Web Services this is something you should be considering 

to ensure the Plex Manufacturing Cloud Data Center can 

talk back to your local servers with redundancy. Plex has 

Global Traffic Manager (GTM) capability from our Data 

Center that will allow you to create a fault tolerant path to a 

secondary server. This is very useful in the event of a server 

hardware failure at your location so that Plex can redirect 

the Web Services traffic to a secondary server and eliminate 

any outage in your local web services. 

Global Traffic Manager requires that you have static IP 

address assigned to each of your local Web Services servers 

so that Plex can direct the returning traffic from our Data 

Center to your local server. The Plex Global Traffic Manager 

will constantly be checking the status of the path to these 

two servers so that it knows when 

a redirected path needs to be taken.

and assign it to the IT Services team.

Akamai Dynamic Site Accelerator

Do You Have Locations Around the Globe? 

Akamai Dynamice Site Accelerator is an option to help 

improve your performance (latency) when using solutions 

from the Plex Manufacturing Cloud. Plex has partnered with 

Akamai Solutions in order to provide a new URL that can be 

used from distant locations to access Plex Online by using 

the Global Akamai infrastructure with Akamai Dynamic Site 

Accelerators. Plex has found that the Akamai service can be 

very beneficial for system performance in certain countries, 

such as China. 

How it Works: 

Without going into a high level of detail, Akamai caches 

static content that appears on the Plex screens. For 

example a frame, border, or logo (things that don’t change 

very often) are stored locally on the nearest global Akamai 

server. Then when you are accessing a page in Plex from 

your remote site, it connects to the nearest Akamai global 

network server and grabs the static content. It then goes 

to get the dynamic (changing) information from the Plex 

Manufacturing Cloud data center, reducing the amount of 

data needed to populate the screen. Of course at multiple 

intervals throughout the day the static content is verified 

and updated also so nothing gets out of date. The Akamai 

network is also able to route around slowdowns and 

outages on the Internet in order to ensure a quicker path to 

the Plex Manufacturing Cloud data center. The end result 

is faster screen updates and happier users. Plex has seen 

increases in performance, as much as 30%, when using this 

system. 

The basic pricing structure for this option is $8.75 per user, 

per month, to use the Akamai URL for Plex. To get an idea 

of your monthly subscription for this service you would need 

to look at the number of employees accessing this URL from
