After the chilly starts of the solo and racing season, this,
the last week of April finally has the blood flowing to
really start enjoying motorsports. If your favorite weekend
vehicle is still under the tarpaulin... shame on you! lets
get that motor revving, say the heck with this $4.00 a
gallon (you’re not going to be able to do anything about it
anyhow!) and start enjoying the many motorsports activities
on schedule with the NER SCCA in the upcoming months.
After, the few double issues we had in the later part of 07, PIT talk is once again
up to speed and trying to get back on schedule (we try to close the 25th of every
month). During the Annual Meeting, the green light was given for a go-ahead,
with PIT TALK, business as usual. I couldn’t help but feel, that PIT TALK needs to
economize somewhat also, just like many other aspects of the New England Region.
How do we do that without loosing quality content?
Well, you’re already looking at it.. the point size of the publication has dropped
down a bit on all copy, allowing more verbiage per page, therefore, a few less pages
needed to print. Results have been reduced as well.
When I first started my tenure with PIT TALK, I had a number of recommendations
form our plus 45-year olds, that the type size was too hard to read, therefore the
type size was increased. As the years
progressed, even with my graded IN THIS ISSUE
articles, stories, tid bits, and even Press releases are welcome (a
story on racing, I suggest you run it by Stephanie Funk (Sfunk59@
collating (and editing) material for the publication.
More on Safety Track:
The two Granatelli/Chapman Indy turbines. Joe Leonards’
68, and Parnelli Jones ‘67 in the rear. Back when innovation
was the challenge at Indy... not cookie cutter racers.
By now, we’ve all seen Michael McDowell’s incredible crash at
Texas. (If not, where have you been? He was even on the Ellen
DeGenere’s show). This was an example of safety working as it
was designed. The soft wall absorbed the impact. Although the
car flipped multiple times, the internal safety cage held as the car
dissipated energy during the rolls. The HANS device and seat kept
him in place.
Unfortunately, on the same weekend, a driver Shane Hammond was
killed during a Midget race at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut.
From the April 7th issue of the Hartford Courant: “Hammond’s
car launched after touching wheels with Chris Leonard’s, became
airborne and sailed over the 4-foot high concrete wall that rings the
track. After clearing the wall Hammond’s car hit a billboard that
stands above the wall in the turn, partially knocking down the red
Budweiser Racing sign. Leonard’s car ended up flipped in turn 4. It
was unclear if Hammond’s car impacted directly with the stanchion
holding the billboard upright. Hammond’s car was entirely over the
wall and caught in the billboard when rescue personnel arrived.”
This might be a case of a racing series racing at the wrong track.
Thompson’s designed for NASCAR Modifieds and other big
racecars. These vehicles are heavy enough to smash through the
billboards, whereas a Midget car doesn’t have the mass. As I’ve
said before, it’s up to us as competitors to decide if the situation
we’re in is safe or not. Don’t let our desire to compete cloud our
common sense.
On the Road: Here in Connecticut, there have been a number
of fatalities amongst teenage drivers (and their passengers) over
the past year. The M.O. is the same. Young inexperienced driver +
fast car + driving over their limits = disaster. A familiar formula that
has played itself out generation after generation. What can we do?
It seems to me that one of the ingredients is a fast (cool) car that
the young driver feels necessary to drive fast on
the road. Maybe we can reach out to our local
schools to publicize our events and get these
young drivers (and their parents) to join us at the
track, a SOLO event, a Rallycross, or a Rally. Not
only would we be giving the young driver a safe
outlet to express their ‘need for speed’ but we
could also help train them to drive their cars and
encourage them to drive safely on the road.
Significant RaceCars:
The Indy Turbines
In 1967, Andy Granatelli and Parnelli Jones
showed up at the Indy 500 with a revolutionary
side-engined, 4-wheel drive, turbine power
car. Dubbed ‘Silent Sam’, the car skimmed
silently around the track with the 4-wheel drive
keeping it anchored in the turns. We all know
the story, after qualifying 6th, Jones and the
car dominated most of the race only to suffer
a gearbox failure due to a $6 part with less
than 10 miles to go. The car coasted into the
pits, as A.J. Foyt avoided a huge accident in the fourth turn to win
the race for the third time.
The Joys
of Open
Wheel
Racing
classes in the
1950’s and early 1960’s. Yes, yes,
ancient history, agreed, but relevant
nonetheless.
While the world center of open
wheel racing is, was, has been and
arguably will continue to be Great
Britain there was a growing need to
accommodate cars and drivers here.
The SCCA took a look at the Brits
and European classes and seemed
to think, well, that looks ok but we
need to tweak it a bit. Remember,
“over there” they had F1, F2 and
F3 by 1963 while we still were
recognizing the 500cc F3, Formula
Libre and F. Junior. So the SCCA
instituted FA, FB and FC. But they
were not exactly the equivalents of
their counterparts across the Atlantic.
For instance, F1 had no provision
for a 5,000cc stock block pushrod
AmuricanV8 motor, but FA did.
Another for instance, while F2 and FB
were both capped at 1600cc, they
were in fact very different animals as
“they” used a pure racing developed
engine while “we” demanded a
production based lump. And their
F3, at 1,000cc, as a restricted intake
engine but over here we allowed
displacements up to 1,100cc, a
whole additional 100cc. What ?
Why ? Well, remember the previous
class F Junior ? It was 1,100cc. And
there were plenty of those cars in
Brabham BT18 Formula B
the US needing a place to
race, so to accommodate
them the displacement
was raised to 1,100cc
making any current F3
car uncompetitive with it’s
intake restricted formula
versus our 1,100cc
anything but turbo or supercharging
goes. They had literally a one choke
Weber, actually a Weber 2 throat
downdraft with one side blanked off !
These motors became the much loved
Screamers of the mid-late 1960’s F3
era. Great gangs of 10,000rpm nonwinged
tube frame spindly formula cars
slipstreamed their way around Europe’s
and England’s tracks amusing both their
drivers and spectators.
So we had FA, big booming domestic
V8’s, FB was reasonably sophisticated
production based 1,600cc engines
from Lotus [the ubiquitous Twin Cam],
Alfa and a few others, and our FC took
the ex-1,000cc and new 1,100cc pure
race motors from their previous F2 cars.
Confused ? Yeah, me to, and I lived it!
The FC of the time utilized Cosworth
SCA [Single overhead cam A series,
carbureted 1,000cc] and SCA [Single
overhead cam C series 1,100cc fuel
injected] motors to good affect.
Now while all this foolishness was
going on a quiet revolution had
happened, and that revolution
continues essentially unchanged to this
day.
The appearance of Formula Vee, or
FV, changed many things in North
American open wheel racing. 1963
saw the first appearances of the
1,200cc VW powered and suspended
and gearboxed cars
with the first FV National
Championship being
awarded to Lewis Kerr
in 1964. In the next few
years names like Ray
Caldwell, Bill Scott,
Who Said It Has
to Snow in Winter?
Scruitneering with Scott Dowd!
Ok, so you know already! The snow has caused so
many problems this year; it almost seems that people
are surprised that is actually does snow in New
England in the winter.
With the real early start of the New Hampshire Motor
Speedway, all you drivers with their cars under banks
of …snow…it is no wonder that New England Regions
first and only official Pre-season tech session was less
that successful.
We did though, still have a good time. There is
nothing better than greeting and shaking hands of
competitors and other Scrutineers. The E-mail thing
gets static after a while. On that note, I want to thank
all of the tech team that made it to Walpole and I want
to thank Dick Shine Racing again for the use of the lot.
By the time you are reading this, you the driver,
probably have contacted someone on how to get
your car inspected. Your probably also wondering
why there was only one pre-season tech inspection.
Trust me I have heard form a lot of unhappy folks.
The #1 reason is staffing. Yes…like Flagging
& Communications, Like Timing & Scoring, Like
Registration…Tech is low on help. I know that you
all have heard me beat this drum…well now its time
to deal with the
outcome.
A bright, yet chilly Saturday in March
meant the racing season was officially
on with the ‘08 addition of the Pre-
Season tech. Photo: Scott Dowd
Don’t get me
wrong, I enjoy
doing this for the
club, but as you
can see…and
have heard…the
club needs you!
Since this lack of
availability, tech
has heard from a
couple individuals
who may be available. This is a good start. It does
take time to cultivate a competent Scrutineer, or
Flagger so, while these people are welcome, more
is needed.Remember…It’s your club! Become the
solution, be apart of it!
Ok, enough of my speech…I will do the best that I can
to make every fun and fulfilling. I hope that we get
some nice warm and sunny weather so the …snow…
goes away.
So let’s be safe, let’s prepare to be safe.
On March 1 st , conditions for the March 9 th Slip-n-
Slide RallyCross were perfect. Two and a half feet
of packed snow awaited at the Lodge at Belmont
for the fifty plus RallyCrossers to come and play.
Just before the weekend, temperatures warmed
and several inches of rain fell on Saturday turning
the site into the world’s largest snow cone. The
consistency of the snow became small ice balls that
would not support the weight of the race cars. The
all wheel drive tractor had bogged several times
but was able to dig itself out, an advantage the
rallyx cars would not have. At
10 PM on the eve of the event,
organizers began calling all
those that had pre-registered
and spread the bad news….
event postponed! The
following 3 weeks were no
better and any hopes for a
March RX were gone.
April’s event was
scheduled for the Rochester
Fairgrounds in NH. A
week and a half before
the event, half of the horse
track and infield were
covered with snow and several days of rain were
forecast. Two years ago at Rochester, the event
was called at noon because the spring thaw and
rains made the track impassible for the majority
of the cars. Bad memories began to come to the
surface of my brain. Fortunately, Mother Nature
realized she owed us one after her March tantrum.
Instead of the rain, we got ten straight days of 50-
70 degree sunny weather and the track thawed
and dried; and dried too much. At times during
the event, cars could not be seen through the thick
cloud of dust kicked up.
The Rochester RX was a good event, filled with
unorthodox goings on. 2008 is a growing year
for NER RX with new names filling key positions.
With any changing of the guard comes training
and growing periods. The morning went off pretty
much as expected. The course was set, running
60% on the infield and 40% on the horse track.
The infield is notorious for building berms due to
the sandy consistency. The finish approach was
a trip across the infield and then a few turns on
the clay/ash horse track. A coin flip decided
that the all wheel classes would run first. They
completed three runs with some minor course
changes. The two wheel drives took the track as
the wind changed and all hell broke loose in the
scoring trailer. Not only did the dust cause false
finish signals, but then blew through the starting
lights causing false starts too. It was just too much
for the new timing crews to catch finish and start
falses at the same time. After multiple reruns and
false signals, the lunch whistle was blown after
two runs.
—continued next page
The dust and wind direction caused a lunchtime course
change which reversed the finish to move from the
horsetrack to the infield to avoid the ash dust. That worked
well to eliminate the dust errors with the lasers. The tighter
corners of the afternoon relay led to course degradation
issues requiring moves between each run. That’s part of
the training process, learning to read how the radius of
the corner works with the ground texture to be enduring or
easily displaced.
The final runs of the day utilized much of the horse track
with a slalom that was nearly a
quarter of a mile long, raising
heart rates and wearing out
the arms of the drivers. As the
dust settled and the scoring
team finalized times, the rest of
the bunch stacked and hauled
cones.
Andrew Pascarella won
Front Stock convincingly over
teammate Brad Desantis in
the Mitsu Mirage. Second
generation RXer Jamie Beliveau
made his racing debut, placing
5 th in his Saab in Stock Front.
Prepped Front saw Steve
Richardson beat teammate
Elaine Kristant in their VW
Corrado. In Modified 2wd,
some familiar names littered
the top of the largest class. Hal
Denham first, Chang Ho Kim
second, and Lodwyk William
was third, a VW, Honda, and
an Acura. What a spread of
vehicles in the 2wd classes.
The Toyota RallyTruck of Scott
Beliveau made its final start and
after trailing Roger Borlase’s
Subaru by 1.4 seconds at
lunchbreak, got down and dusty
and pulled out the class win over
the Subes. In Prepped 4wd,
Don Grant had the measure
of the class, besting Barry
Zimmerman and others in the
all Sube class. In Modified
4wd, Warren Elliott complained
all afternoon about the long
technical slalom being too
slow, but he managed to use
that to put distance between
himself and most of the rest of
the class on his way to the class
win. Warren’s teammate Justin
Baltrucki was second in the Audi
vs Sube class.
Saturday April 12 saw mostly sunny skies with
temps in the mid 60’s here in Central Mass, but
Solo had the first event of 2008 on THE following
day, Sunday the 13 th , under far less stellar skies,
rain, wind, temperatures, grip, and a few other
things that go bump in the sump.
143 drivers made the Sunday trek to Devens to
get the cobwebs out of both mind and vehicle. The
retained course started with a small left kink to up
and back one secondary runway, then feeding
into to a right sweeper to the main runway, and
then back to the finish. It was a good test for
looking ahead, honing slalom skills (5 different
ones to navigate), crossovers, and 2 turnarounds.
Overcast skies during a.m. registration held
temps to somewhere in the low to mid 40’s,
and it looked like it would be a “primer
grey” day, but perhaps dry. Computer and
timing issues resulted in first kart off much
later than expected, but the skies also
darkened and rain started just as first drivers
started off the heat. The light rain persisted
throughout that group, adding considerable
time to run the first half of the course, as
no dry line could be created. After maybe
half of the first heat had made first runs with
more than a few DNF’s and sod-farming
excursions, the decision was made to shorten the
first section of runway by some 15-20 seconds in
the interest of both time and sanity. With Murphy’s
Law in play, we all knew that by the end of first
heat it was going to be just a 3-run day.
The rain stopped right at the end of first heat (woe
was us), with the sky remaining overcast, but the
temp and humidity also started slowing dropping
over the hours. Between third and fourth heat,
the skies had cleared nicely, the sun was out,
but noticeable gusts was constant (note your
wind-burn face on Monday), and my guess is
temps were not much above
36 degrees, giving a wind
chill of perhaps a low
20. Even with layers of
clothing, it was “crisp”
to say the least…Wiley, do you own any long pants?
Bud and Lynn Collins from the far away Mid-west
attended, driving their black Pontiac Solstice to a
second and third respectively in the CS class, with Matt
Poynter spoiling their day and took top CS by .299,
which also netted Matt Top in Pax. Further down in CS,
Rob Mills will have some splainin’ to do as he whooped
dad Chris by over 4 seconds in their MR2 to take a
fourth, just out of the trophies.
DS saw a close finish, with Scott Thursby in a Mazda
Speed3 edging David Gott’s BMW by .013. In ES,
Jim Woodburn stayed clean on all his wet runs to take
ES, while both Joe Funke and Bill Brundige wound up
second and third by succumbing on all wet runs to
spins or otherwise DNF’s. First heat also had GS with
a well-subscribed 12 entries. Josh Parker taking the wet
ride with Hoosiers to first. Robert Lipton, visiting New
England from the San Francisco Region, took third with
his second generation Neon ACR. GS also saw Stanley
Gorham debut his new Mini, after retiring his old IT car,
and took eight despite a pylon penalty. I guess Club
Racers can be taught new tricks!
Hard luck of the day went to Mike Condict in BSP, who
saw his Evo engine give up and had to be trailer’d out,
yet he managed to keep top spot with just 2 runs, and
G Stock’s David Fitzwater, who had 2 spins in one run
and was the recipient of “limp-home” mode computer
issues with his Civic Si. Honorable detention goes to a
few corner radios’ that seemed to toggle into “receive
only” mode during heat 4.
FSP saw a close battle, with Wiley Cox edging Neil
Schelly by a little over a tenth of a second. Jason
Towne in FP, sporting new EFI, Hoosier 05’s and stiffer
suspension on his vintage 260Z, figures he needs to
dial it in better, letting Bob Lang take that class by over
7 seconds. The WPI FSAE crew was there,
with Cody Wojcik driving the Techmobile
to a full 8 second gap over his
fellow techmate, Scott Duncan.
The closest “almost had ya’ ” was STS,
where Bob Guenther in his Protégé
stayed ahead of Jonah Erickson and
his Civic by a mere .008 to take
second, with Igor Romashko breezing 3.7
seconds quicker for the Gold. STX saw Josh
Pesch in first by .246 over Charlie Thompson
in the JCW Mini, who finally relaxed enough
to take second by .092 including a 1 pylon
penalty, over Aaron Lee in a WRX, on his final
run.
SM had 11 drivers, with Chris Travis in his
“Honduh Cibic” powering over the star of
the festive “Cooking with Corrales” Show, PJ
Corrales, by 1.860 seconds. All Junior Karts
had a wet course in the morning, and Sarah
Bowin managed top kart time in her FJA
Elite/Sprint at 65.9 seconds on her third run.
Just behind her was Megan Woodruff by only
3 tenths.
Mike Leruhuh, attending the event at the request
of friend and last years Novice Stock runner-up
Champion Zack Wolkoff, took first in Novice
with his AS Honda S2000 by just .096 over
Dave Kickerly in his SM BMW 323i. Interesting
of note, is that most of the Novices managed
their best PAX time on their third run. Honorable
mention to Aaron Telage in the Novice STX
Mini S, who after taking in the advice and
suggestions from someone nameless, nailed his
third run to improve overall by 8 seconds, but
fell victim to a late cone call that moved him
from a trophy fifth to eight spot. Well done to
ALL our new Novice drivers!
Top raw time was Stacey Strout in her CM at
57.944, and rounding out top 5 Pax after Matt
Poynter were Bud Collins, Scott Thursby, David
Gott and Best Darn Grid Chief Ever, Brian
Levesque in EP.
Our next event is a 2-day affair at NHMS. The
Solo School is on Saturday May 3 rd , and is
followed the next day, Sunday May 4 th , with
Round 2 of the Solo Points Battle. Remember:
pre-reg, pre-pay, and let’s play!
Frost Heave Rally
True to Its Name
By: Scott Beliveau
The 2007 running of the Frost Heaves Rally was run on paved and dirt roads
due to an early spring. To avoid a repeat in 2008, the event was moved two
weeks earlier to March 8 th in hopes of capitalizing on the record snow fall.
The plan worked partially. On the Thursday before the rally, temperatures rose
to the 40’s and stayed there through the weekend. The paved roads melted
off to pavement, but the dirt roads, nearly half the rally, were snow, slush and
ice covered. This became further complicated when the afternoon weather
was precipitation including mist, rain, sleet, and snow.
Fifteen teams gathered in Laconia, NH for the start of the rally. The morning
section ran east to Alton and almost into Wolfeboro on the scenic leg of the
rally which featured overlooks of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding
mountains. The breakdown of entries was pretty typical for an NER rally.
Three teams ran in the equipped class utilizing sophisticated equipment, five
teams in the stock class, and seven teams in the novice class. I’m happy to
report that all that started the rally found their way to the finish.
Jessica Mapplebeck and Paul Gosselin won the Equipped Class as well as
being the overall winners with a total score of 68. That represents that over
15 checkpoints, they were off the perfect time by a cumulative 68/100s of a
minute. When considering their score, keep in mind the visibility was limited
by fog, rain, and snow banks as well as having to dodge tremendous patches
of frost heaves. Dave Siesicki and Steve McKelvie were second, only .20 of a
minute behind.
Experiencing the winter warming trend that the Rally receives its name, Bret Wilber and
Matt Kennedy took a fourth in Class S. (insert) Nadine Villani and Rob Urwin, take a
momentary break on their way to first in Class D. Photos: Scott Belliveau
The afternoon section of the rally left the lunch break in Laconia and ran
north into Meredith before heading west to Sanbornton and finally Tilton.
This section ran up and down the mountain roads, only a lane and a half
wide during the summer, but reduced to single lane in many places by
the gargantuan snow banks from this year’s storms. This was the fun part
for the drivers as they had to get up on the wheel and push a little bit to
stay on time on the slick, narrow and twisty roads. The afternoon section
boasted snow and ice covered dirt roads as the majority.
The Stock Class trophy was awarded to 2007 Class S champions, Scott
Carlson and Phil Lamoreaux. While limited in equipment, they may have
had a slight advantage in that they both reside in central NH and were
undaunted by the weather and road conditions as they scored 220 for the
day. Jeremy Madore and Hal Denham were second.
The rally gets its name from the orange signs that begin blooming in early
March throughout northern New England; “Frost Heaves”. The signs
warn motorists of upheavals in the road caused by spring freeze thaw
cycles. By all accounts, this was one of the best, or worst, years for frost
heaves. There were some sections that were so bad the week before the
rally that the rallymaster was forced to makes detours of the rally course to
better roads. Consider that the rallymaster drives a four wheel drive truck
like a madman and understand how bad the roads were if he decided
the detours were needed. Both Northern Lites vehicles finished the day of
rallying with dangling exhaust.
The Novice class was won by Nadine Villani and Rob Urwin. While they
meet the requirements for novice ranking, they have shown good results
over the past two or three years attending rallies occasionally. Their score
was 380. Second went to Sid and Jonathan Ordog. It was 17 year old
Jonathon’s first rally.
Tidbits of Technical Info, Thoughts & Surprises.
by Greg Amy
How to Get a Regulation Changed
Whew! You sure gotta climb a lot of steps to get to this Capitol Building here in
Washington. But I wonder who that sad little scrap of paper is?
I just a bill...Yes, I’m only a bill...And I’m sittin’ here on Capitol Hill…
It may have been a long time for some of us, but do you remember those old
“Schoolhouse Rock” segments on Saturday mornings? The one above describes
the process by which a bill becomes a law in the United States, all the way
from proposal, to committee, to debate, to Congressional vote, to Presidential
signing (or veto!) Well, you may not have been a fan of Schoolhouse Rock but
SCCA rule changes work the same way!
So let’s say you have a new idea, and you’d like to see some safety rule
changed or added, or maybe get a car classified or weight-adjusted. How
exactly do you go about making that happen? How does the rules and regs
process work in SCCA? Well, let’s follow your lonely “Bill” working its way
from the genesis of an idea in your brain all the way up to “Presidential”
signing (or veto)!
Gee, Bill, you certainly have a lot of patience and courage.
Well, I got this far. When I started I wasn’t even a bill, I was just an idea.
Some folks back home decided they wanted a law passed, so they called
their local Congressman, and said, “You’re right, there oughta be a law.”
Without the workers, the rally could not happen. Thanks to Ted Goddard
for being the official checker and working checkpoints, Gil Greenlaw,
James and Rochelle Ray, Tim Thomas, Brett Beliveau for working
checkpoints, and Chris Regan for running sweep.
The first thing to remember is that not a whole lot happens in SCCA without
membership input. It’s a rare occurrence where a car is classified without being
proposed by a member; this means you. Don’t count on it happening by itself;
it’s your responsibility to make that request.
On a sad note, Frost Heaves was Louis Piscitelle’s last TSD rally. Louis and
daughter Kathryn burst onto the rally scene in the spring of last year and
attended every event since, including TSD, gimmick, and fund raisers. As
a team, they earned NER Rookie of the Year in 2007. On April 7 th , Louis
passed away. God speed Louis.
The second thing you should recognize is that generalizations are usually
ignored; open requests like “qualify this car” or “make that car go slower” or
“this action was unsafe” are read but typically get a curt response of “thank
you for your input.” So, to make a difference you need to be specific and you
need to provide as much factual detail as possible
12 PIT TALK PIT TALK May 2008 13
Tech Talk —continued from page 11
Let’s say you’re looking to get your Forguar Borgward classified in Improved
Touring. In the case of vehicle classification requests or adjustments (or
submission of errors in printed technical specifications), go to SCCA’s main web
site and search for “Vehicle Technical Specifications”; you can download a
VTS sheet with instructions. Fill out that VTS in detail with everything you know
about the Borgward, provide the requested photocopies of the shop manual,
and submit it along with your request.
OK, so now that’s you’ve got the VTS all filled out, what do you do with it?
SCCA makes this real easy for you; all regulation change requests should be
emailed to the Club Racing Board at crb@scca.com. You will immediately
receive an automated notification of receipt of your email. Then, you wait for
the process to work its magic…
Well, now I’m stuck in committee and I’ll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss and debate
Whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will, But today I am still just a bill.
Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate Advisory Committee.
Each category of competition vehicles (e.g., IT, SM, Prod, GT, SS, etc) has
a committee of peers who meet on a regular basis via telephone conference
call to discuss and debate change requests and outstanding items. Each
also has a private message forum; your request will be posted to that forum
where the committee members can review, debate, and form opinions on your
matter in advance of the next conference call. Your thoroughness of submitted
information is important, for the more info you provide, the less “in the dark”
the committee members may be on the details of your Borgward.
During the con-call they will discuss the final details of your request. Once
thoroughly discussed, it will be dispatched in one of three ways: tabled
for further review/investigation (i.e., they have not rejected it but want to
learn more), or forwarded to the Club Racing Board as either rejected (i.e.,
the committee disagrees with your request) or as a recommendation for
implementation (possibly with some adjustment to your original request; for
example, they agree to classify the Borgward but in ITS at a heavier weight
versus your request in ITA). Note that the advisory committee only recommends
changes based on their experience with the particular category.
Listen to those Congressmen arguing! Is all that discussion and debate about
you?
The CRB now takes the recommendation from the committee and discusses how
this fits into the overall picture of in general. Committee recommendations carry
significant weight with the CRB, but if there are conflicts with other categories
it’s the CRB’s responsibility to address them.
There are distinct differences between a true rule change (e.g., you want the
Borgward classified and technical corrections (e.g., the printed valve size of the
Nissan Sentra is incorrect). In the case of the latter – an incorrectly-printed spec
- the CRB will accept that as an error and publish the change of the GCR in the
next Fastrack, effective immediately.
In the case of your Borgward rule change request, the CRB will meet and
discuss the issue, using the information/recommendations provided by the
advisory committee, and either table, reject/or recommend the action.
However, because it is a rule change, the CRB must then forward your
Borgward request to the Board of Directors for further review.
And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill/Well, then I’m off to the White
HouseWhere I’ll wait in a line/With a lot of other bills/For the president to
signYou mean even if the Whole Congress says you should be a law, the
president can still say no?
Yes, that’s called a veto. If the president vetoes me, I have to go back to
Congress and they vote on me again, and by that time you’re so old…\The
Board of Directors are the final “say” in rules change requests. Just as in the
prior steps, the BoD will meet to discuss the rule change request and - again as
before - it will be dispatched in one of three ways: “referred or tabled” (where it
will likely be sent back to the CRB/advisory committee for further information),
“Not Recommended”, or accepted and published in Fastrack as “Proposed”.
All “proposed” rules changes are then published in the next Fastrack for
membership review and input, along with a proposed effective date (we’ll
discuss how to read a Fastrack in another column). This comment period gives all
SCCA members the opportunity to be notified of a proposed change in the GCR
and gives them the opportunity - some say, the responsibility - to respond. During
this comment period the BoD will review and consider all membership input.
Once the period has expired the BoD will take a final vote on whether to
implement the proposed change or not, and those results will be posted in a
subsequent Fastrack. If approved, your change will be published in Fastrack with
its effective date. And that means you, the SCCA member, have helped move an
idea all the way up to being “law”.
He signed you, Bill! Now you’re a law! Oh yes!!!
(Next Month: “How to Read a Fastrack…”)
Joys of Open Wheel Racing — continued from page 5
Dave Weitzenhof, Rollin Butler, and many more earned their piece of VW
history and the class continues in a form very recognizable to those men
today. Through good support, good rules, good racing and peer pressure
the FV community is still one of the closest in our paddocks. Parking
together, loaning parts, assistance, beer even, the FV gang always has a
great time, win or lose. Any class that can survive essentially unchanged
for 45 years must be doing something right. Or lots right maybe. As the
SCCA’s most entered National Class among all the current open wheel
classes, FV sits third [3rd!] overall in the list behind only SRF and Spec
Miata in 2007. That’s truly a success story.
In fact, open wheel classes made up 50% of the top 10, out of 30
classes, in participation in 2007.
The next revolution to happen in open wheel racing started “over there”
with the 1967 introduction of a class calling itself Formula Ford. And this
particular revolution crossed not just the English Channel to Continental
Europe, but the Atlantic to North and South America, the Pacific to
Australia and New Zealand, and became a true world classification
identifiable virtually everywhere open wheel cars raced.
A short sidebar here, with the introduction of Formula Ford in 1969
the SCCA now embraced five open wheel classes, FA, FB, FC, FF and
FV. So in 25 years the club had gone from no open wheelers to 5
well supported healthy classes. That is not to say the SCCA welcomed
Formula Ford with open arms. Hardly. They allowed early FF cars to run
as totally outclassed and uncompetitive FB cars. Made sense to someone,
they were both 1600cc, right ? Apples and mushrooms, not even
oranges. Through the efforts of a small group of US race car importers,
people like Lotus East’s Fred Stevenson, New Jersey’s Fred Opert, Summit
Point owner and Royale importer Bill Scott, Texas’s Lotus connection Gus
Hutchinson, domestic constructor Ray Caldwell, the Northwest’s Pierre
Phillips and substantial lobbying efforts from the membership the club
brought FF into the fold but not without a fight.
If FV was the template for a successful open wheel racing class certainly
FF can be accused of copying a good thing. Relatively inexpensive cars,
relatively low tech, relatively inexpensive engines, gearboxes and tires all
combined to create one of road racings greatest learning classes.
It can’t really be argued with that FF has produced more F1, Indy Car
[of all disciplines-CART, USAC, Champ Car, IRL], sports car racers, both
drivers and engineers, than any other class ever. A bold statement ?
Maybe. But the list of graduates includes Formula 1World Champions
like Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Nigel Mansell, Jody
Schecter, Mika Hakkinen, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher. Indy
champs like Michael Andretti, Danny Sullivan, Jimmy Vasser. Sports Car
champions like Andy Wallace, James Weaver, Stefan Johannson, Geoff
Brabham, and Didier Theys. Great designers cut their teeth designing
and engineering Formula Fords as well, men like Rory Byrnes of
Benetton and Ferrari fame, Williams F1’s Patrick Head, Adrian Reynard
and of course the US’s own Swift man David Bruns.
Speak My Mind —continued from page four
For 1968, USAC instituted rules that reduced the size of the turbine
allowed. Nonetheless, Granatelli teamed up with Colin Chapman and
Lotus to build the wedge shaped, 4-wheel drive Lotus 56. The STP showed
up with 3 cars, which would be driven by Joe Leonard, Art Pollard, and
Graham Hill. Also of note, Carroll Shelby showed up with two turbine
cars that looked similar to the 1967 side-engined car. These were to be
driven by Denis Hulme and Bruce McLaren. The cars practiced but were
withdrawn for ‘safety’ reasons.
Much to the chagrin of USAC, the restrictions did little to deter Chapman’s
ingenuity and the car’s qualified at the front of the field. As with 1967,
Leonard spent much of the race at or near the lead and looked poised for
victory when a part within the fuel pump failed and the car coasted to a
stop a handful of laps from the finish as Bobby Unser took his first of three
Indy victories.
For 1969, USAC further restricted the turbine engines. Only one turbine
powered car showed up. The Jack Adams Special conformed to the newest
rules and looked more like a jet on wheels than a racecar. USAC was
successful in driving the turbine concept to extinction as the car, driven
by Al Miller, barely qualified for the field on it’s qualifying attempt and
was bumped on the final day of qualifying. USAC then dealt the final
deathblow by banning turbines (and 4-wheel drive) after the event.
I remember reading of the turbine cars as a boy and being glad that they
failed because in my young mind, they had cheated. Only now do I realize
that I thought that way because the writer of the history I read slanted their
article to lead me in this direction. Being older, wiser, and having a greater
appreciation of great engineering, I now think differently.
Just to come up with the concept in 1967 took brilliant leaps in logic and
a comprehensive knowledge of the USAC rulebook. (Helped to a degree
by Pratt & Whitney’s Turbo Power and Marine division that had begun
selling jet turbine engines as generators and boat motors.) 1968 combined
the concept with the brilliant mind of Colin Chapman and the challenge of
restrictions from USAC to further improve the car.
Imagine if the powers that be at USAC did not work to exterminate the
turbine but instead moved to nurture and improve the safety of the concept.
Open wheel racing would be drastically different than it is today. Finally, I
wonder if there’s a place in racing for turbine powered cars today?
