Well, receiving a press kit shortly thereafter, I found that a special celebration hadbeen held, sponsored by Motion Dynamics to honor the 25th Anniversary of the Spec Racer Class.Per their release. “ We would like to send out a special thanks to all of the Spec Racer Ford driverswho came out and participated in the 25th Anniversary Event held at NHMS May 24 - 25, 2009sponsored by Motion Dynamics Racing, SCCA Enterprises and the NER Region...”Geeze, it just seems like yesterday that the class was just introduced. At that time, the vehicle wasbuilt around the Renault Alliance (when was the last time you saw one of those) drive train. I believean off- the shelve car could be had for about six to seven thousand dollars. To me that was out-ofboundsin budgeting, yet, through the years I kick myself for that same spec racer is now worth threetimes the amount... of course with the Ford conversion thrown in and years of service on the vehicle...which in reality is routine for all racers. I’m sure many of the long-time participants have more than made up a thefinancial difference especially with cost per lap.One of the first to run in NER was driven by Glen Kus. Since he always got tossed in with the small production cars(back when F,G,H had its own field.) I found that even with the Renault engine, the racer was quick, but was extremelysquirrely in the corners with its narrow DOT tires, so at the time they were a little bit in the way...but only for a briefperiod as performance improvements were updated.I had the pleasure of campaigning one for a season with Motion Dynamics and thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually foundmyself able to enjoy and spectate other races during the weekend, ‘cause the usual panic-mode of running a productioncar were absent. As reliable as they are, and with a sealed engine, all those lastminute issues many encountered did not exist. Arrive and Drive at its finest!Spec Racers also won the right of being sometimes the crash fest of the weekendclaiming the title from Formula Ford (more later). With a dozen and a half and usuallymany more of equal performance cars, “Accidents” were bound to happen. As amatter of fact, my very first race with a Spec Racer, I started 14th, and finished fourthby being fortunate enough by just missing all the mayhem on the track.Forty years ago, we celebrated the Moon Landing, Woodstock and for us SCCA’ers, the advent of Formula Ford. Happy Anniversary to a very successful class in SCCA.This past week all the FF affectionados pilgrimed to Road America to have a classicreunion of these open-wheeled racers. Hopefully we’ll see some press on that.Always a spectator favorite classes, It’s disappointing to see FF, (and CFC) twindle inthe past few years. As mentioned before, it was a very highly-competitive field, withmany times more entrants thanallowed at a short 1.5 mile track such as LRP. Either there was aconsolation race, or if you did not qualify in the top 30... its wastrailer time. Before passing the fiasco title to Spec Racer, this was theclass that had the hotly contested duels.Another celebration on hand this past weekend as John Fitch washonored for his 92d birthday at LRP. What a guy, WWII P-51 pilot,Mercedes-Benz team driver, Corvette racer, LRP General Managerand Inventor. Yes, of course we all know that John was the inventorthat developed the yellow, sand or water-filled collapsible barriersseen on every highway throughout the country. His book, “AA full grid of Formula Fords back in 1984.Photo Bridgehill Studio archiveconnecticut Yankee...”, I read while in Junior High about his exploits driving his MGTC, then Mercedes and then thefactory-sponsored Corvette team, I’m sure led many into an interest in racing. Happy Birthday, John. This past weekend as well, the National Event held at Lime Rock Park ended with some very hurt pocketbooks, andfortunately a few Drivers safe from what could have been a very harmful situation.New England’s own Ken Payson escaped serious injury after a very frightening accident. He is fine at last report, although very sore and wearing a neck brace. He gives credit to his Hans head and neck restraint for preventing anyserious injury... or as he puts it mildly..” I could be dead now...”The accident was just one of those classic racing scenarios that seem unavoidable. A T2 Elise spun exiting the righthanderleading onto No-Name straight, Ken was the second of two Miatas in close formation in pursuit. The first Miata, blocking forward site, made a last second evasive action, whereas Ken went head-on into the stationary car. Reports—continued on page 52 PIT TALK PIT TALK July/August 2009 3

ViewFromTheGridBy: Karen PetersenThere is no end to the possibilities for new experiences on the grid. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, here comes anew one.During the Pig Roast regional at NH, I strolled over to talk to a Spec Racer driver. I had never seen the car before, andwanted to tell him how much I liked the graphics on his helmet. As we chatted my eyes went to the visible mustache underthe visor. “Um, you do have on a balaclava under there, don’t you?” I asked (there are some guys out there—you knowwho you are—who pull down the head sock while on the grid and, when reminded, always say, “Oh, of course, Karen.I always pull it up as I am rolling.” (Born at night—but not last night). But I digress. Jim Cotcher, the driver, said no, he thought it wasn’t required under a fullface helmet. I explained the ruleand said if he needed one I had one I could loan him. No problem said Jim, he had one.Race time rolls around and here’s Jim, being gridded. The crew of a friend of mine, another SRF driver, strolled overand said, “Hey, Karen, that guy with the mustache? He shaved it.” In horror I went over to him and said, “You didn’t!!”Sure enough, there was this naked shiny pink upper lip. Turns out he didn’t have a balaclava after all, and said, “I didn’tcome all the way from California not to race.” I said to him that I could have loaned him one, and apologized profusely. He said was fine with it, and joked about it, saying his wife said it was like kissing another man. That, of course, led todiscussions about the marital possibilities of such a scenario. But I digress.Making matters even worse? The mustache was 35 years old. Arrrggghhh.Jim is a neat guy, with (thank goodness) a good sense of humor. On Sunday morning the grid presented him with aprosthetic mustache make from clear tape and fur clipped from Hilda Richardson’s monkey (don’t even go there).Jim is from California, is retired, and he and wife Carol, are going cross country on a long-dreamt-of cross-country trek, doing regionals from coast to coast, hitting historic tracks. He’s doing a blog, which can be accessed through SFR’s TheWheel. I’m sure you’ll read about the abuse he got via NER’s grid.I realized that this is a good time to remind you guys that Jim we try Cotcher very hard avec to ensure le Moustace. you get your race experience witha minimum of hassle and fuss. Thus, on the grid, we have spare arm restraints, balaclavas, and gloves. It’s so easy toforgot or lose those things, and we don’t want hysterics on the grid, so see me before you run screaming through thepaddock* in search of that glove that fell out of your helmet as you were driving to the grid. We also have oddball toolsavailable; screwdrivers, duct—excuse me–racer’s tape, electrical tape, clear tape (those pesky windshield cracks) andother odds and ends. Always ask us first.(*Sometimes screaming out of the paddock isn’t necessary. A driver called me over once to help because he had beltedhimself in on top of his gloves. And, no, it wasn’t a setup. Not with this driver. As I was on my knees, rooting aroundunder his hiney for the gloves, I’m thinking, I know with my luck there has to be some a**hole behind me with acamera right now.)But I digress. Some of those things I have bought to have on hand, but most of the gloves were donated, whichleads me to point number 2. A lot of your old gear can be recycled in this way. The solo program would love yourout-of-date helmets. Nomex can often go to flaggers, depending on the color (obviously a red suit much cause, er,confusion). But even red could go to pits, or Fire/Rescue. (And one would hope this is not a suitsomeone has worn nonstop all season. Know what awet driver in old Nomex smells like? Don’t ask.) Andof course I would love to have old gloves. Even thosewith small holes can be worn by a worker (grid, F&C,pits) trying to help out in a dicey situation. It’s moreprotection than we have now. ( We grid folk do preferto wear orange Nomex gloves, but those seem tohave gone the way of the dinosaur. Or Betamax.)So, thank you, Jim, for being a willing spirit. Thankyou guys for your driver gear donations. And thankyou guys for covering—and keeping covered—thatfacial fur.Remember: I’m watching youJim Cotcher avec le Moustache.Ah to be a racer! Those gleaming toterhomes.Luxurious hospitality areasset up next to your paddock.Crisp, neat suits covered inBy: Stephanie Funksponsor logos. The shiny, well prepared cars with newmulti thousand dollar motors for everyrace. A helicopter to whisk you in past the pesky crowds of fans, depositing you in the infield mere steps from your rig.Sounds wonderful. Now lets look at how most of us get to do it.Every journey begins with the first steps, and often the first stepsto your road racing career (and the Miss Valvoline girl) starts withthe driver’s schools. There are many such scattered throughout theregion, and in 1991, the character in our next story were aboutto undertake one of those very schools, this one held at PoconoRaceway.Remember the fantasy of the gleaming toterhome? Well, replacethat with a Ford van and an open trailer, and a Ford truck and anopen trailer. Those exotic, expensive race cars? We’ll just replacethose with an ITB Opel Manta, and an ITB Volkswagen Rabbit. The idea was that our heroes, who, for the sake of this story we’llcall them Buddy, Fred, Eric and Ed, were going to head out toPocono for Buddy’s school. The plan was well laid, as all excellentplans are. Meet at the entrance ramp to-I-91 and tow out together.Ed and Fred arrived together and pulled off on the grass to wait. They waited. And waited. And waited. “Geeze¬ Where AREthese guys? I know we said we would meet here at 1 p.m.”Unbeknownst to them, Buddy and Eric were having the exactsame conversation...only they were having it about 1/8 of a mileaway, just around the curve on the ramp, hidden by the trees. You see, they arrived there first, and, thinking that youcouldn‚‘t park on the entrance ramp without gettingharassed by the law, proceeded to drive downaround the bend out of sight. It was probablythe better part of an hour before Eric poppedout of the bushes alongside the roadway tofinally tell them where they were.At this point, they were now going to be latefor Buddy’s Friday night classroom session.Ed told Buddy to get in and hold on. Toget him in the proper frame of mind for theweekend’s events, they took off at speeds*cough*cough* well above the posted limit,Buddy’s car in tow.Remember the helicopter fantasy? Mmm, wellnot quite. They made it, barely in time but barely is asgood as easily sometimes. They sent him intothe classroom and they set up their paddock spot.Racing is expensive. There’s simply no two waysaround that. And whenever you get several peopletraveling and racing together, they will oftenadopt a co-operative method of sharing expenses.Perhaps they split a garage. Or they share hotelrooms. They may buy food and split duties there aswell. For this particular event, relatively inexpensivelodging had been found close by. And to compensate for thetowing out, Buddy’s deal was that he would provide food foreveryone, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sounds good, doesn’t it?Upon finishing up with the classroom session, everyone piled intothe trucks to make the drive out to the lodging. If you are thinking5 star hotel, um, nope. If you are thinking Motel 6...uh uh. Try aseries of dilapidated mobile homes parked haphazardly in themiddle of an overgrown field. But, they had a place to lie down(just check carefully for intruders first) a place to get wet...sort of...and cooking facilities...each one had a grill set outside. It was then that the next wrinkle in these excellent plans becameapparent.Buddy lugged in the coolers for the weekend, one loaded with therequired beer, and the other loaded with....meat.That’s right. Meat. He had red meat, white meat, round meat, flat meat. He had the meat off a pig, meat of a cow, meat of abird. He had it stuffed into tubes, ground into a box and flat on aboard. What he didn’t have was anything else.No vegetables. No eggs. No bread, or condimentsNo chips or dips. All he had was pounds and pounds of meat.Ed and Eric shared a look, thenvolunteered to run back into townto get something to break up themonotony of an all-meat meal.Buddy fired up the grill and tosseda few chickens on it as theyheaded out of the field. They located a store and loadedup on carbohydrates, sodasand other essentials, then as thedarkness became opaque, they rolledback out to the mobile homes. Buddywas a mere silhouette in the gloom whenthey arrived back.“Good timing. This is all set to eat.” heannounced as they pulled the bags out of thetruck. They deposited the bags inside as oncevaguely resembled a bird.6 PIT TALK PIT TALK July/August 2009 — continued on page 28 7

NER SoloChampionshipPoints Event #FIVE. Cone-A-ThonDevens Complex, Ayer, MA June 17, 2009“Finagle’sSeventh Law:The perversity of theuniverse tendstoward amaximum...”by Eddie SavageThe start of the fourth week of June marks theend of most schools academic year, the firstdays of summer, and a spurt of new faces tothe Solo scene. But this particular day alsobrought forth rain, wind, and downright too-cooltemperatures to make it a day worth venturingout on. Gee, even dos were shivering this day.To the hearty, we appreciate you.The NER Solo group was short a good handfulor two of seasoned drivers and core workersthat went to this weekends DC Pro Solo, so only93 entrants were on hand to wheel what wasgood course, 53 degrees and water aside.Kudo’s go to a few of our newer members, likeGus Heck, who volunteered over the forums tohelp out an extra bit to make sure things try togo as smooth as possible. So there’s your tip ofthe day: check out our NER Solo forum to keepup to date with what goes on behind the scenes, gossip, or communicate ways to help make theevents get better and better. Our nemesis today was software. Crashing bigtime at one point later in the day, with the T&Sworkers resuscitating the data from announcerlogs to get things back on track while underextreme pressure. Thanks Jenna and Gus (andany others not mentioned, too!).The rain (or lack of, within one portion of thelate morning heat) was the determining factor insome classes. You could be “sorta-dry” at oneend, but wet at the other. A few lucky driverscaught that one full runs worth of a dry linebefore rain re-appeared, giving them a chanceat glory on the 6-run day. But woe if you gotgreedy, for the cone’s would bite. For othershoping to hit the starting line before the showersagain, it was not to be. Such is life. With the wet conditions, close battles were notas commonplace, and to a degree, positioningwas uneventful. There seemed to be more DNF’sdue to simply trying too hard than sailing fullaway on a wet section. If you finished clean, that was a win in itself. Often the class winnerwas decided by well over a second. The bigexception to the differentials was in Adult Cart, where 3 rd place Wiley Cox fell just 0.002 outof the trophies to 2 nd place Paul Bowin. EricKrueger took KK on a 60.061, to Paul’s 60.441.Wiley’s daughter Hannah Cox ran in FJB, andher first rain event, finishing 2 nd to AllisonKrueger. Allison netted a 69.666 on her last run.Sarah Bowin took 1 st in FJA, with Ian Kruegertrailing 0.405, and then Kevin Maldari taking3 rd .Cone-A-Thon proved to be suited for the wet weather types. Josh Noble in BSP cuts a tight path in the cones. Photo: Ed SavageSomeone better tell Ben Wagstaff and his ESMiata to slow down (only kidding), because hetook on the 18 other Novice’s, and won thatclass by over 4 seconds in Pax, besting a fewWRX’s in the process. So much for that AWDadvantage in the rain, eh? Close fights in Novicewere Tim Helm, STX Civic Si powered, taking 7 thand just 0.145 out of the trophies on a 71.789to Felix Wong in his WRX (DS). Shane Landrywheeled his black Mazda RX-8 (SM) to be0.030 late to Peter Duffins Corvette (SS), placing14 th and 13 th respectively. It was good to see aportion of the novices as regulars today, bravingthe conditions to get that all-important seat-time.E-Stock saw a nice 4 car fight, but it was the dry3 rd run of Jeff Anderson that took him 0.602ahead of Richard Davis, with a 62.350. Jeffearned a Pax place of 3 rd with that as well. JohnRappa and Bill Brundige finished out the 2-seaterES show. Jeff Martynuska let a dirty 3 rd run puthim 2 nd between class winner Barbara Seegerand Matt Mickle. Afternoon soggies left themfinishing on their a.m. times. Both G and H-Stock were no different, with 3 rdruns being the best for most drivers. Lou Waddelltook GS by 0.772 on a “dirty” 62.359 from codriverEllen Savell gaining her first open trophy(but also with a cone: tsk tsk), and both bestingthe long perennial fighters, Josh and AllenParker. Of note, the 4 GS drivers had 14 conesto their credit. Please see the corner workers tomake amends.H-Stock had a nice field of 7 entrants, with PaulZahornasky tops on a 61.795 over co-shoe TimRichmond’s 62.663, both in a Mazda 3. MattMurray and his BMW 318i taxi trailed Tim byjust over a third of a second, earning third spot. Those runs earned Paul 4 th in Pax, with Tim 5 th ,and Matt nicely Paxing 7 th .Joshua Noble and his Subaru WRX Sti took the 2car BSP field on a dirty 3 rd run 59.033 over JeffSeeger and the Corvette. NER SoloSometimes toughfor the chiefphotographer toget his own picture, but Daniel Donovancomplied andgrabbed this oneof Eddie Savagenegotiating thecones.ChampionshipPoints Event #SIX. Scorched OrangeDevens Complex, Ayer, MA July 12, 2009“Sunshine is the bestdisinfectant.”Justice Louis D. Brandeisby Eddie SavageOh, Justice Brandeis, you are so right. A weebit of precip rolled through on Saturday, not thatany typical central Mass person would havenoticed otherwise, as June had 27 rain days, and July is not all that much better to date. It’sbeen so damp, moss is growing on top of moss. But Sunday looked just peachy-keen as my dadwould have said, and 146 assorted flywheeland lugnut owners headed out to Moore Field atDevens to autocross the day away.To get Novices up to “worker speed”, we aretailoring the drivers meeting to try to hold thenovices for a few extra minutes so Novice ChiefPJ Corrales & Co. can give them some extrainstructions on what to do, what to watch out for, what NOT to do, and basically make them intofast-acting responsible workers. We have noticeda few entrants compete, but then skip out onwork assignments. This does not make the core workers happy, itnegatively impacts every other driver, and it’sjust not right. Bottom line: if you want to play, you have to work. We all volunteer, and someopt to do more than normal. Thus (taking officialtone), to be clear to all entrants, if you skip yourwork assignment or leave without notifying theChief Steward with a valid reason (your owndeath, as example) you will receive a DNW(Did Not Work) on the time sheets, and may berefused entry to future events. We are all in thistogether.146 entries is a nice number to run 4 heats, butwe fell short of 3 and 3, getting 3 and 2 runs onthe day. NER Solo must have the luck of anyonebut the Irish, as we again had a few shortfallsin timing, re-runs, and the lost workers in theafternoon. For the most part, the staging wasfast paced and timed. Run, back in grid, andwithin about 6-7 minutes, out for another run. Most of the workers were up to speed with coneresets, but a few spots needed better “workerattention” to Kenny Kones.27 Novices were on hand, and a few laterremarked on their respective enthusiasts’ forums, how nice it was to have access to instructors, and how friendly we are as a group. It’s noviceslike Kai Noeske, who stayed and worked anextra corner shift, that help make it look all easy. Thanks to those newcomers who take a fewminutes to stop, look, and learn. We learn bydoing. On the up side, we have a new timing display! The course was a challenge to do well, andincluded a decent “turn-around” that we’ve notseen in a while. It was not overly technical, butyou were tested as to your ability. This causedhavoc in the novice times, as they were not theusual “last is best” format, and a few struggledwith the more advanced layout. Novices, please re-read the last sentence of the previousparagraph: we learn by doing. You won’talways have a basic autocross layout. Alwaysremember to treat an advance layout as alearning tool. It WILL make you better. As for those Novices, Ben Wagstaff has switchedfrom ES to STS with his Miata, and still ran toptop on a 68.350, almost 2 seconds ahead ofthe CS Solstice of James Mongeau. It wasn’tuntil you got to 5 th or back that the differentialsgot close, with 5 or so spots separated by justaround a tenth of a second. High Five’s to all,and a mention of the XP Mazda RX-7 driver JoshNatella, DS Honda Prelude of Tim Flanegin, andSM’s Honda Civic Boosted Chris Donovan.Joe Barbato wheeled in the Honda S2000 forA-Stock duty, and wheeled out a winner on a62.473, besting 8 other drivers, including theKozlak’s, and THAT ain’t easy. Joe rightly earnedTop Pax for the day, too. His co-driver NickBarbato, took 2 nd in AS, and 7 th in Pax. Theusually light-subscribed B-Stock had 6 entries, with Neil Schelly co-fitting in with Bob Guenthnerin his RX-8, but Keith Scala still ruled with hisRX-8 on a 65.201, just less than a second fasterthan Chris Parsons in the Nissan 370Z.Matt Poynter got to pay-some-back on theCollins’, and took the Miata to a C-Stock winwith a 64.365, just a half-sec ahead of Bud,and Lynn 0.8 back from there. D-Stock hadbut 3, and 2 of them were top 10 Pax at theend. David Gott ran down Scott Thursday on a65.388, to Scott’s 65.527.E-Stock winner Billy Davis ran home a winnerin the Miata and a Top 10 Pax too, on his65.346, just 3/10ths ahead of the Toyota of JeffAnderson. John Rappa was a whisper 0.095off Jeff’s best. Good action in that class. G-Stockwas back in form with 9 drivers (including me fora change). Josh Parker kept his 3 rd run as bestwith the CRX on a 68.260, Lou Wadell trailed afull second in the Civic Si off on a 69.330, andEd Savage in the Plymouth Neon ACR sedan toa 70.130 in third.Tim Richmond drove the wheels off PaulZahornasky’s car as a co-driver, taking the 8 carH-Stock class on a 68.057. Matt Murray tooksecond, only 0.379 back on a 68.436, with PZthird, just ahead of Dave Morin. The mid-fieldHS drivers struggled with cone calls, and thetimes garnered were not gifts by any means.Over in ASP, Dan Cernese earned his win overKevin Kirchoff by just 0.194 on a 64.663. Lucky 13: Big Lap RallyBy: Scott BeliveauThe 13th running of the Big Lap Rally brought out 13 teams tochallenge the chosen New Hampshire back roads on June 6th. Ninepoints separated the top 3 teams after 16 checkpoints and 170 miles. Some new names and some old rose to the top while other top teamshad problems. The entry list was a bit unusual in that the number of entriesin the Equipped class was larger than the number inthe novice class. The reverse is usually true. Therewere 6 Equipped cars and only 5 Novice and 2Stock. Eventual winner, Team FriedFarb, was a namethat topped the ranks of NER rally often in the 1990sand early 2000s. Rallying together for the first time ina couple of years, Mike Friedman and Marc Goldfarbtopped all comers, posting a 22 for the event in Equipped.Stephanie Gosselin and Fred Mapplebeck trailed by only4/100th of a minute. Laurel Unger-Richman and NickShectman were third, another 5/100ths back. AdamBroduer and Josh Benner continue to improve, placingfourth. The teams of Baker/Shrader and Mike Beliveau/Regan had uncharacteristic issues that pushed themdown in the ranks. After 12 years of Big Lap and 5 years of Frost Heave Rallies, findingnew roads to rally on in central NH is becoming harder and harder. So this year, the rally broke some new ground in a foray farther southin the state than ever before. This stretched the mileage about 20 mileslonger than originally planned, but the result mitigated the extra length.Comments about the roads at theafter party were all positive.Francestown, Lyndeborough,Deering, New Boston, and Goffstown are nowon the list of townsI’ve victimized withrallies. In the novice class,Rich Steele and RayWeatherbee were victoriousHal Denham when asked about his assistant in their second rally together,on his checkpoint claimed that he could throw scoring 866. Stephen Mooreany kind of insult his way, cause of his hard and Joyce Bennett followedshell...but proved a bit lethargic.closely with 888 in their firstevent together. Roy Davis andJohn Stevens took third on their first rally, urged to attend by their wivesafter seeing an ad on the internet. The cool car of the rally went to JoeClouatre and Andrew Terry, running in a Ford Escort rally car recentlypurchase on the internet and having some pretty famous names in itslog book. From the rallymaster’s viewpoint, on top of finding good roads, werethe tasks of drawing accurate tulips, and challenging the experiencedteams while not losing the novices. After producing so many rallies,my tulip library contains approximately 600 intersection configurationdiagrams (tulips). Following this rally, it is about 75 deeper. It seemedthat none of the stock tulip diagrams quite fit the real intersections, forcing many revisions. There were a couple of intersections that justplain looked like spider webs and pop art (see insets).Scott Carlson and Phil Lamoreaux won the stock class with a score of261. They have been dominating Stock class for a couple of yearsnow and are always willing to help out on a rally by being run-workers.Andrew Pascarella and Stephanie Ideman were second in the class, rallying together for the first time. Andrew has a heavy foot, posting“early” times across the morning section. While the rally was not a trap rally, there were instructions that reallyoffered up a challenge to find the way. One was a “Speed Limit 30”sign engulfed by a tree. While an approximate mileage was giventhe sign, the approximate mileage was also the official mileage. Thiscaused issues as some teams saw it and some didn’t. I blame Ted forthis. Another instruction was a speed change at a sign and then aturn only 0.03 miles later, but apparently not a problem since a deltamileage was given. The biggest challenge, which wasn’t intentional, was close to the end of the rally. After coming out of a narrow dirtroad, the next instruction was right onto “Morse” at a mileage. Therewas an unnamed road about 50 yards before Morse that a number ofteams decided to investigate for about 30 minutes. Finally, the “(Onto)93 North” instruction, at which some teams chose the 93 South routefor unknown reasons. They missed the first round of refreshments atTGI Fridays in Concord, where the rally ended. Goffstown’s Old HomeDay and the Weare community yard sale added New York City-liketraffic and pedestrian delays.Ted Goddard was the checker for the rally, providing a fair routeand mileage for the contestants. Tim Thomas, Hal Denham and AlexKorovkine logged more miles than the rallyists, racing from location tolocation to find duct tape around trees marking checkpoint locations.Scott Carlson, Phil Lamoreaux, Mike Beliveau and Chris Regan servedas run workers. Thanks to Scott and Phil for pulling over ( a couple oftimes) to let me rocket by, understanding how the overall rally runs.Once again, the back roads of New Hampshire prove to be their own TwilightZone. Here, we discover the Pre-Grid at LRP for the Big Iron Event held backfrom the late 50’s. John Biscomb's GT-1 Corvette had a few ITE BMWs in tow to turn— continued from page 710. Photo: Matt RomanowskiNERBuddy came inside, into the lit interior of thehome. He was carrying a plate piled high with ....charcoal.The chicken was cremated. It was beyond done, it was cooked off thebones and the bones were even charcoal. It was a smoldering pile ofblackened grit that might have been. But men are tough, they are thehunters, not the gatherers. So they each popped a beer and ate chipsinstead. As Ed would tell it later, the rest of the weekend would follow in this samevein. Buddy’s car developed a mystery problem that wouldn’tallow it to go over 60 mph (and if you’ve ever beento Pocono, 60 mph is about paddock speed) It wasso bad it prompted the comment that the car hadgone faster on the trailer coming out.But you can fix anything with a hammer. And ahammer was what was used when they discoveredthe cat was almost completely plugged. Poundingon a screwdriver, the now useless guts of the catwereleft on the ground...and Buddy suddenly developed more guts in track ashe was now able to finally get up to speed. It was a tired and grubby group of guys who piled into thevans to go home after the weekend was over. But they hadthe satisfaction of knowing—that the Valvoline girls werejust..that..much closer now. All they needed was somemore excellent plans to make that dream a reality.living quarters rt packageBuilt Right! If you are reading this then youhave certainly seen theirad on the back cover of PitTalk over the last several years. What you may notknow is that HMS is the exclusive North Americanimporter for SCHROTH harnessbelts and that theydirectly support and service over 32 NASCAR SprintCup drivers and 14 IRL drivers with custom restraints (checkout www.schrothracing.com for a complete list of pro driversusing SCHROTH). It isclearly the one place for you to go to “try it before you buy it”.With nearly $1million in inventory, they have the right size foreveryone!HistoryHMS motorsport started in1995 by Joe Marko. Afterspending 25 years in thehospitality business Markodecided on a life changeto pursue his passion forBMWs and motorsports. With two other associateshe decided to give it a go…hence HMS motorsport®was born. The letters HMSstood for what initially werethe three principals: The 'H'quickly found that a start-up business was not for him; the 'M' –Marko; and the 'S' just never showed up. Since the logo lookedgreat, and the name was easy to remember he stuck with it.The business has evolved from its first “shop” of 1,800 sq.ft.in Marblehead to their 8,500 sq.ft. facility today in Danvers,Massachusetts. Initially the business offered performance, handling, styling, and car care accessories primarily for BMWs.A couple of years later they added the Schroth Street LegalHarnessbelt line and started to carry other products for BMWcustomers doing drivers schools and autocross. In 1996 when the first BMW Z3 was produced, Marko fell inlove with the car (as did 110,000 other Americans) and HMSbecame the major supplier of Z3 aftermarket accessories. Heput over 15,000 track miles on the HMS Z3 and developed a“factory fitting” roll bar that was a big seller to folks wanting todrive their Z3 on the track. In 2000 Schroth Safety Products decided to close their USMotorsport operation and HMS became the exclusive NorthAmerican Schroth importer and distributor. During the 2001Performance Racing Industry trade show, Ryan Newman (NASCARPenske Dodge #12) and his then crew chief Matt Borland stoppedby the HMS/Schroth booth and listened to our sales talk on the newSchroth Hybrid competition belt. In July 2002 Ryan was the firstNASCAR driver to us a Schroth Harnessbelt in a Cup Race(Winston Cup at that time) at New Hampshire InternationalSpeedway. That race turned out to be Ryan's first win - and agreat kickoff for Schroth in NASCAR.2003 was the year the HMS really began to grow the safetyside of the business. They became the first official retailer of theHANS® Head and Neck Device and the Northeast Recaro Distributor.NASCAR business really took off due to Marko’s close cooperationwith NASCAR on the development of their new seat belt standard(now SFI 16.5) and some serious travel to and from Charlotte andvarious tracks. Marko was involved in a number of the dynamic sledtests at Delphi Automotive testing labs in Ohio in conjunction withSchroth and NASCAR.In 2008, HMS created a sister company called SRS Tech (operatingout of the HMS facility) that isnow manufacturing all LatchLink harnessbelts for SCHROTHand sewing custom belts forall of the Pro NASACR and IRLteams.Improving Driver SafetySeveral times a year HMSpresents safety seminars forvarious organizations suchas the SCCA, Porsche Club,Vintage Racing Group, andBMW CCA. They also workclosely with Stafford and LeeSpeedways and NHMS on a number of safety initiatives. Marko hasauthored the GCR’s for SCCA ProRacing for seat belts, head & neckrestraints, and seats with specific recommendations for installation. The HMS TeamOur entire staff is made up of car-enthusiasts and "track junkies" whoshare a passion for performance cars and driver safety. Jeff Paulk,Matt Long, and Jay Flower have been with HMS for nearly 10 yearseach and have been joined by Tim Grenier and Derek Mulson whohave added some terrific shop and fabricating skills.Directions and HoursHMS is centrally located in Danvers, MA just 14 miles north of Bostonin the Danvers Industrial Park on the southbound side of Route 1 – ½mile south of route 62.
