1981-2011: a 30-year history of charting its own course.
30 years… a lot has happened to this little company that was founded
in 1981 in Thônes, in the cradle of the French Alps. What a long
way we’ve come! Who would have thought that the snowshoe, that
prehistoric device, would become the second largest winter sport after
skiing?
On a trip to North America, TSL had the idea of adapting the wood
snowshoe and making it out of plastic. And that’s how TSL (Thônes
Sport Loisirs) and the JCB snowshoe were born. Unfortunately, the
TSL story came close to ending there, as the company was faced with
severe financial difficulties.
Philippe GALLAY, a ski instructor in La Clusaz, decided to buy TSL in
1986 for next to nothing. He set up his workshop in his parents’ family
home and, on snowy evenings, enlisted the help of a few friends to
make snowshoes that were sold in a few local shops.
Thanks to the new company director’s ability to anticipate snowshoers’
needs, the TSL snowshoes travelled outside France, initially to Japan
and then to other European countries. TSL thus created and developed
the recreational snowshoe market, offering ingenious, high-quality
products.
Always full of ideas for helping people have fun outdoors, TSL created
other markets. For example, in 2005, the company introduced French
sports-lovers to a new activity from Scandinavia – Nordic walking - and
became the French market leader. In the same vein, TSL launched
a new type of snow-sport on the international market in 2011: the
Yooner.
So TSL has covered a lot of ground on its way to its 30th birthday.
The company has always worked towards consistent, irreproachable
product quality, close, friendly relations with its customers, authenticity
born from its atypical culture and human values, all of which have gone
towards making it the leading brand in the snowshoe market and a
creative force in the development of new outdoor sports.
For 30 years, the Savoy company and its customers have been sharing
their love of the mountains, the open air, the product, the excitement
and the dream.

Eco-design consists of designing a product
with consideration for the impact
that every stage in its life cycle will have
on the environment.
TSL has always been concerned for environmental
protection. A responsible
“good neighbour”, the company has a
strong attachment to the natural environment
in which it is privileged to operate.
We therefore seek, from the initial design
of the product, to optimize its environmental
performance by minimizing its
impact (consumption of materials, transport,
usage, recycling, etc.).
For example, all TSL OUTDOOR sites have
been operating on 100% renewable electricity.

Snowshoes were invented when man
found that he had to walk on snow, and
their ancient history is linked to that of
humanity. Knowing that the 15th Century
French who colonized Canada were the
first white men to use them helps to
explain why recreational snowshoeing
was first developed in France. The first
manufacturers of modern snowshoes
appeared in the 1980s. Among them was
TSL, which, by using quality materials
and basic technical improvements, has
worked its way up to become the leader
for the activity. Today, these modern
snowshoes are highly reliable, efficient
pieces of equipment. Their sturdiness
and ease of use open the way to snowcovered
ground for those who want to
explore it at the walker’s slow pace and
take in all its beauty and purity. Marking
the gentle undulations of a plateau
with their ephemeral trace, walking
alongside the bed of a stream, crossing
it, following the line of a ridge, climbing
a peak, discovering a lost hamlet,
recognizing animal tracks … in a word,
entering into a winter postcard. That’s
the key motivation for snowshoeing
enthusiasts, to which we must add
the pleasure of sliding down slopes,
laughter and sharing moments of intense
happiness, because no other winter
recreational activity is as convivial as a
walk or a hike on snowshoes with family
or friends. Snowshoes can adapt easily
with different types of snow and are the
easiest form of locomotion on snow. From
plain to mountain, light powder to heavy
snow, forests to undulating terrain,
crusted snow to spring snow, frozen or
melting … there’s always the renewed
pleasure of discovery, of nature, of effort
; a simple but profound joy that speaks to
the heart and soothes the soul.

• Snowshoe components:
- Recycled composite materials: they are all obtained by recycling production rejects or
composite snowshoes at the end of their product life.
- We have opted for a strap fastening made from recycled polyester.
- Packaging made in France from natural jute fibres
- Down to the last detail... A tag at the front of the product made in bio polypropylene
(70% biodegradable potato starch)
• Manufacture:
- The composite materials are all injected at TSL OUTDOOR via electric presses which are
recognised as consuming little energy.
- The final assembly of the 305 / 325 Nature Ecotrace uses as little fossil fuel as possible.
- All TSL OUTDOOR products are made in accordance with basic workplace health and
safety rules.
- The staff are qualified and trained in a sustainable development approach.
• Transport:
We do all we can to reduce transport flows and therefore reduce the CO² pollution level.

EcOtrace is a Swiss association that was
founded several years ago within the Swiss
Snowshoeing Federation. Its key aim is to
give walkers a real, accurate idea of their

signboards on marked trails.
“We’re passionate about the environment
and are convinced that most impacts are
linked to a lack of information; we’ve therefore
designed this series of signboards so
that every snowshoer knows how to behave.
They cover themes such as the forest, plant
and animal life, waste and transport. Every
year we install them all over French-speaking
Switzerland and during the 2012/2013
season they’ll be making their appearance in
France. But it’s only a start!” said association
member Catherine with a smile.
TSL Outdoor and EcOtrace share the same
vision: “Snowshoeing should remain a free
sport but should be environmentally friendly”.
TSL has therefore naturally agreed to
pay the association 2€ for every EcOtrace
