TSL OUTDOOR 2012 / 2013
03
1981-2011: a 30-year history of charting its own course.
30 years… a lot has happened to this little company that was founded
in 1981 in Thônes, in the cradle of the French Alps. What a long
way we’ve come! Who would have thought that the snowshoe, that
prehistoric device, would become the second largest winter sport after
skiing?
On a trip to North America, TSL had the idea of adapting the wood
snowshoe and making it out of plastic. And that’s how TSL (Thônes
Sport Loisirs) and the JCB snowshoe were born. Unfortunately, the
TSL story came close to ending there, as the company was faced with
severe financial difficulties.
Philippe GALLAY, a ski instructor in La Clusaz, decided to buy TSL in
1986 for next to nothing. He set up his workshop in his parents’ family
home and, on snowy evenings, enlisted the help of a few friends to
make snowshoes that were sold in a few local shops.
Thanks to the new company director’s ability to anticipate snowshoers’
needs, the TSL snowshoes travelled outside France, initially to Japan
and then to other European countries. TSL thus created and developed
the recreational snowshoe market, offering ingenious, high-quality
products.
Always full of ideas for helping people have fun outdoors, TSL created
other markets. For example, in 2005, the company introduced French
sports-lovers to a new activity from Scandinavia – Nordic walking - and
became the French market leader. In the same vein, TSL launched
a new type of snow-sport on the international market in 2011: the
Yooner.
So TSL has covered a lot of ground on its way to its 30th birthday.
The company has always worked towards consistent, irreproachable
product quality, close, friendly relations with its customers, authenticity
born from its atypical culture and human values, all of which have gone
towards making it the leading brand in the snowshoe market and a
creative force in the development of new outdoor sports.
For 30 years, the Savoy company and its customers have been sharing
their love of the mountains, the open air, the product, the excitement
and the dream.
And the Savoy company still has plenty of surprises in store!
People:
TSL OUTDOOR’s philosophies are friendliness,
enthusiasm and respect for human
values. Everyone in the company
shares the same state of mind and the
same motivation.
Everyone acts in a completely open manner
and has an acute sense of his responsibilities.
This collective approach is the driving
force behind the company’s success;
we use it to serve our customers, for
whom we design and make innovative
products to meet their needs and requirements.
High-quality products made in
France and the United States
Since it was founded, TSL OUTDOOR
has been concerned about sustainable
development and makes its snowshoes
in France for its European markets and in
the United States for the North American
continent.
Customers enjoy the benefit of our
proximity and reactivity as we have total
control over our production (from plastic
injection to final assembly). We’re competitive
as a result of our know-how,
modern production facilities and the innovative
manufacturing processes developed
by our team.
“There are numerous advantages”
explains Philippe Gallay.
“We can be sure of making high quality
products, we’re involved in the local economy,
we use as many recycled materials
as possible and we minimize transportation.”
A technological commitment via
eco-design
Eco-design consists of designing a product
with consideration for the impact
that every stage in its life cycle will have
on the environment.
TSL has always been concerned for environmental
protection. A responsible
“good neighbour”, the company has a
strong attachment to the natural environment
in which it is privileged to operate.
We therefore seek, from the initial design
of the product, to optimize its environmental
performance by minimizing its
impact (consumption of materials, transport,
usage, recycling, etc.).
For example, all TSL OUTDOOR sites have
been operating on 100% renewable electricity.
Eco-design means involving every part
of the company in a transverse approach
to achieve innovation and differentiation.
Innovation
A love of innovation.
We’re a team of testers, developers, professionals
and enthusiasts whose goal
is excellence.
We invent innovative concepts for all
our products and design ingenious products
to meet our customers’ needs. TSL
OUTDOOR has lodged over 60 patents
worldwide.
“Practicing an outdoor sport means
caring for the natural environment you’re
in”,
explains R&D engineer Yoan BIBOLLET.
Which is why, even from the product
design stage, we’re keen to opt for lowenergy
production methods, such as
electric injection presses.
We also choose recyclable materials and
do not using polluting heavy metals such
as chrome or lead. We also have as many
interchangeable parts as possible to
lengthen the life of our products. Our aim
is to ensure that the only thing we leave
behind in nature is the imprint of our
snowshoes in the snow.”
We’re delighted to offer you sophisticated, high-quality products that are the result of our
experience and requests from our partners and customers and in which the concepts of
human values, enthusiasm and sharing take on their full meaning.
Jean-Marc LAMORY, writer and
snowshoeing enthusiast.
Snowshoes were invented when man
found that he had to walk on snow, and
their ancient history is linked to that of
humanity. Knowing that the 15th Century
French who colonized Canada were the
first white men to use them helps to
explain why recreational snowshoeing
was first developed in France. The first
manufacturers of modern snowshoes
appeared in the 1980s. Among them was
TSL, which, by using quality materials
and basic technical improvements, has
worked its way up to become the leader
for the activity. Today, these modern
snowshoes are highly reliable, efficient
pieces of equipment. Their sturdiness
and ease of use open the way to snowcovered
ground for those who want to
explore it at the walker’s slow pace and
take in all its beauty and purity. Marking
the gentle undulations of a plateau
with their ephemeral trace, walking
alongside the bed of a stream, crossing
it, following the line of a ridge, climbing
a peak, discovering a lost hamlet,
recognizing animal tracks … in a word,
entering into a winter postcard. That’s
the key motivation for snowshoeing
enthusiasts, to which we must add
the pleasure of sliding down slopes,
laughter and sharing moments of intense
happiness, because no other winter
recreational activity is as convivial as a
walk or a hike on snowshoes with family
or friends. Snowshoes can adapt easily
with different types of snow and are the
easiest form of locomotion on snow. From
plain to mountain, light powder to heavy
snow, forests to undulating terrain,
crusted snow to spring snow, frozen or
melting … there’s always the renewed
pleasure of discovery, of nature, of effort
; a simple but profound joy that speaks to
the heart and soothes the soul.
Why choose TSL composite snowshoes?
COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY
Composite snowshoes are specially designed for mountain regions with temperate climates. Their strong points?
Excellent grip, high-tech features and extremely precise tracking. TSL, the world leader in snowshoes, strives and
continues to offer you the best in snowshoes!
For natural and ergonomic walking:
Hourglass Shape
Lateral Grip
TSL Patented
TSL snowshoes combine exemplary comfort with maximum performance
in all snow types. The hourglass shape lets you walk naturally
and provides perfect grip.
The drift stabilizing binding system allows the back of the binding to
break through the first hard layer of snow to increase grip on the
descent. As the binding floats below the snowshoe deck it keeps the
foot at an angle which reduces tension on the lower legs.
• Step-In Binding – TSL Patented
Comfort, light weight, flexibility...3 in 1! Exclusive to TSL!
A new shoe / snowshoe binding which respects the shape of the
foot without sacrificing stability, with a new high-precision support
transmission system. Lighter and quicker to put on and take off, Step-
In ensures equally effective foot support when striding quickly and on
difficult traverse slopes.
Variable height edges Icy snow Packed snow Soft snow
• Up & Down System ( 418 & 438 Up & Down ) – TSL Patented
The Up & down system reduces the slope effect and improves walking comfort considerably.
Going uphill :
the device lifts the heel, relieves stress on the calf
and provides maximum traction for each step.
Normal position :
On the flat, the binding articulation lets you walk in
a comfortable and natural way.
Downhill :
the back of the binding goes under the deck in
order to keep the foot flat, preventing the foot
from jutting out at the front of the shoe.

305 / 325 NATURE
The first snowshoe to be made from
recycled materials.
ITS CONCEPT IN A FEW WORDS
Every detail studied as part of a sustainable development approach…
COMPOSITE Ecotrace
10
• Snowshoe components:
- Recycled composite materials: they are all obtained by recycling production rejects or
composite snowshoes at the end of their product life.
- We have opted for a strap fastening made from recycled polyester.
- Packaging made in France from natural jute fibres
- Down to the last detail... A tag at the front of the product made in bio polypropylene
(70% biodegradable potato starch)
• Manufacture:
- The composite materials are all injected at TSL OUTDOOR via electric presses which are
recognised as consuming little energy.
- The final assembly of the 305 / 325 Nature Ecotrace uses as little fossil fuel as possible.
- All TSL OUTDOOR products are made in accordance with basic workplace health and
safety rules.
- The staff are qualified and trained in a sustainable development approach.
• Transport:
We do all we can to reduce transport flows and therefore reduce the CO² pollution level.
- 95% of the 305 / 325 Nature Ecotrace’s components are manufactured on-site
- In 2008, TSL OUTDOOR brought its manufacturing workshops together into a single
site, to reduce logistics flows
- TSL OUTDOOR favours maritime transport to transport its products to other continents
(Japan, North America…)
• Quality and recycling:
- The 305 / 325 Nature Ecotrace have the advantage of TSL OUTDOOR products’ quality
features: Sturdiness, high-tech features, quality and comfort!
- All the components of these snowshoes are recyclable.
EcOtrace is a Swiss association that was
founded several years ago within the Swiss
Snowshoeing Federation. Its key aim is to
give walkers a real, accurate idea of their
impact on the environment.
It carries out a number of actions, from fun,
informative events to installing educational
signboards on marked trails.
“We’re passionate about the environment
and are convinced that most impacts are
linked to a lack of information; we’ve therefore
designed this series of signboards so
that every snowshoer knows how to behave.
They cover themes such as the forest, plant
and animal life, waste and transport. Every
year we install them all over French-speaking
Switzerland and during the 2012/2013
season they’ll be making their appearance in
France. But it’s only a start!” said association
member Catherine with a smile.
TSL Outdoor and EcOtrace share the same
vision: “Snowshoeing should remain a free
sport but should be environmentally friendly”.
TSL has therefore naturally agreed to
pay the association 2€ for every EcOtrace
snowshoe sold.
Why choose TSL aluminium snowshoes?
ALUMINUM TECHNOLOGY
For natural and ergonomic walking:
32
Aluminum snowshoes are designed
for the large open expanses and
plateaus as well as the forested
and hilly terrain (North America
and Northern Europe.) Their Strong
Points? Maximum comfort using a
flexible decking designed to withstand
very low temperatures. The
large surface area insures maximum
flotation in deep powder. They
are the most technologically advanced,
high-performance snowshoes
on the market!
Shin Bang
90°
• Frame tapered at the back
Our snowshoes have been developed so the
user (woman or man) can move in all snow
types with maximum ease and comfort,
walking naturally.
• Anti Shin-Bang Articulation – TSL patent
90°
Anti Shin-Bang Articulation (ASA) blocks
foot rotation at 90° in order to prevent the
snowshoe from over-rotating and hitting
the shin. ASA also prevents snow from
being flipped on your back.
As well as preventing Shin-Bang, the
articulation system developed by TSL allows
the foot to remain horizontal when on
traverses, to make walking more stable and
comfortable.
• Step-In Binding – TSL Patented
A new shoe / snowshoe binding which
respects the shape of the foot without
sacrificing stability, with a new high-precision
support transmission system. Lighter
and quicker to put on and take off, Step-In
ensures equally effective foot support when
striding quickly and on difficult traverse
The ultra-rapid adjustment system works by
sliding the rear part of the binding forwards
There’s nothing more unpleasant than
walking noisily through silent countryside.
TSL has solved the problem with its SSAS
How it works, and its advantages:
The origins:
The Yooner is a new snow-sport
concept inspired by an ancient type of
sledge, the “Paret”, used by schoolchildren
in winter in the Manigod Valley,
Haute-Savoie (French Alps) in the early
20th Century.
The “Paret” was easy to control on the
slopes and was great fun to use; we
thought it deserved a few improvements
so that it could be used on the
ski slopes.
So that’s how the “Yooner” was born.
With the Yooner you can “edge” to turn and skid-stop as in skiing.
The seat is spring-mounted and the ski is made of stainless steel.
The Yooner’s key advantage is that it’s easy to handle, great fun
and immediately exciting.
The Yooner is for all ages and anyone who wants to share in an
easy, fun activity. It’s also a way of bringing skiers and non-skiers
together and bringing more variety to life in the snow!
High-quality Yooner:
- 2-year guarantee
TSL Yooner come with a 2-year guarantee covering parts and
labour.
- 100% made in France
Yooner are manufactured 100% in the French Alps. TSL can thus
guarantee products of high quality and optimize their carbon
footprint (less transport)
Why choose TSL poles?
NORDIC POLES TECHNOLOGY
64
WHAT IS NORDIC WALKING?
For the quality of the materials used:
A complete sport that anyone
can practise:
Nordic walking was created in Finland.
As a training method used by
cross-country skiing competitors
to keep them fit during the summer,
it really took off in Northern
Europe in the 90s and is now developing
in Southern Europe. There
are over 7 million people practising
the sport worldwide.
• Tungsten tip
All TSL Nordic walking poles have a Tungsten
tip giving excellent grip and optimising
ground support.
The principle:
By accentuating the natural pendulum
movement of the arms
while walking, aided by two special
poles, the whole body is brought
into action.
• Pole material
FIBER & ALUMINIUM TECHNOLOGY
100% 7075 ALUMINUM
Galac stick / Galac stick +
vibration flex strength
The gain:
Every muscle in the body (arms,
shoulders, neck, pectorals, buttocks
and legs) is used in harmony.
Nordic walking improves the
cardiovascular system and lung
capacity (oxygen consumption is
increased by up to 60% more than
in normal walking). In addition, Nordic
walking uses up more calories
(up to 40% more than in normal
walking).
THE IMPORTANCE OF CARBON:
One-piece or telescopic, depending on the model, the pole is made of either fibreglass, aluminium
or carbon. The higher the percentage of carbon, the lighter and more rigid the pole is and the
less it vibrates.
For the high-tech features:
• PUSH & PULL PAD – TSL patent
Easy and efficient system, allowing a pole
tip to be changed to fit ground conditions
(“Rubber tip” on asphalt – tip on paths and
muddy grounds).
The PAD remains attached to the pole, even
when in “path” mode (tip).
