From the Director’s Desk
It is a great pleasure to welcome the new Batch of 2009 to a temple of modern
learning called NIST. The founder Chairman of NIST, Shri Surendra Mudali
had a dream and a vision to transform NIST into a mecca of technical and
professional education and journey has well begun. NIST is one of the leading top
institutes of the country within the top 100. The 150 faculty members of the Institute
comprising of over 40 core faculty from the IITs, IISc and top universities of the
world, are determined to provide the best undergraduate and graduate education.
What sets NIST completely apart is its singular determination to be a frontline
leader in teaching and research competing with the IITs and NITs for this honor.
Students of NIST stand out in start contrast as they are the most disciplined, hard
working, ethical, multi-skill, highly motivated, ambitious professionals ever produced
in India. This is not mere drum beating but is vouched by thousands of our alumni
and industry partners from all over the world. We welcome the most talented students
to challenge our faculty and together we discover a new frontier in our march towards
Excellence.
National Himalayan Trekking Expedition - 08
If one expects to find the rarest blend of raw ‘Adventure’ with exquisite ‘Heavenly Beauty’, it is this. ‘The
National Himalayan Trekking’ takes one into the world of gentle walks along pine–shaded slopes over the
city roads to hard, perspiring treks over rough and rocky
terrains crossing high mountain passes, from challenging
‘on-the-top-of-bus’ rides on narrow paths (at a height
of 7000-8000 ft) with no fencing to rappelling straight
down from the mountains, gentle shuffling of skies on
easy gradients of a snow covered meadow or a wind
splitting rush of a heavy downpour or an even more exciting
Ice-skiing experience, a soaring flight in a hangglider
or the adventurous take on the white-water Rafting.
You name it, Himachal has
NISTians at Himalayas
it.
NIST Robotics Club at ROBOCON-09
NIST Robotics Club (NRC) participated in ROBOCON-2009 held at Pune. ROBOCON is a national level
competition conducted by MIT, Pune in collaboration with DOORDARSHAN-INDIA. The winner of this
competition has the honor of representing India in the
international contest. NRC has been participating in this
competition for the last 5 years. This year total 52 colleges
from all over the country participated in the contest. NRC
went up to quarterfinals performing brilliantly this time.
To reach to this level the team had to cross two league
matches and a super league round. This time NRC was
considered as one of the strong contenders for the title.
Only team NRC along with IIT Kanpur, IIT Chennai,
NIRMA University and MIT Pune out of the total 52
Team NRC at ROBOCON - 09
teams was able to complete the target this time. NRC
played against MIT Pune (the host team) in the
quarterfinals. The commentators of DD had been describing team NRC as the dark horses of the game. The
referees and organizers of the event appreciated the performance by telling that they wanted to see the team in
the finals. One of the automobile majors Mahindra & Mahindra visited the team pit area to meet our students and
asked for their resumes for future reference. They were very happy to see the kind of technology that had been
implemented in the machines. The winners, IIT, Chennai will be going to Tokyo, Japan to play the international
contest.
National Institute of Science & Technology- A Brief Introduction
The National Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1996 and is being managed by
the SM Charitable Educational Trust with the mission to “create engineering minds capable of mastering the
global challenges of tomorrow’s technology”. The Institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE under MHRD, Govt of India) and is affiliated to the Biju Patnaik University of Technology
(BPUT). The Institute campus of 60 acres is located at the picturesque Palur Hills about 12 kms from
Berhampur and 3 hours drive from Bhubaneswar. The Institute has grown by leaps and bounds under the
able leadership of the founder Director, Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director (M.S., University of Houston, B.
Tech., IIT Kanpur), Prof. (Mrs.) Geetika Mudali, Placement Director, (M.S.(MIS), New Jersey Institute of
Technology, NJ), Prof. Ajit K. Panda, Dean, (Boyscast Scholar at University of Michigan, USA). About 2700
students are studying in various disciplines of B. Tech, M.Tech (CSE, ECE), MCA, MBA & PGDM at NIST. The
entire campus is 24x7 wi-fi connected. For the recreation of students and employees of the Institute, we
have Lawn Tennis court, Basket Ball court, Swimming Pool, Cricket ground, Paragliding, Gymnasium, Adventure
Sports, Canoeing, Kayaking, Himalayan Trekking, etc. A plethora of rock gardens, fruit gardens,
nurseries, water fountains, aquarium, glass house for cactus vegetation, animal parks, etc., make the
campus an eco-friendly zone where man and nature coexist in a rare ambience away from the dust and
grime of city life.
Within a short span of 13 years, the faculty of NIST has been awarded 4 BoysCAST fellowships, 2 FullBright
fellowships, 3 Samant Chandrashekhar Young Scientist Awardees and more than 20 Post-Doctorate. The
faculty members have published more than 15 Books and 150 International journal papers in refereed
journals. The Institute has received a number of grants from AICTE, DST, UGC, MHRD, CSIR and private IT
companies for Projects, Staff and Faculty Development Programmes. In the year 2009, NIST received a
grant of about Rs. 30 Lakhs to conduct Faculty and Staff Development Programmes in Advanced Computer
Control of Industrial Process and Automation Engineering, Advanced DSP implementation using FPGA &
DSP Processor, Microelectronic VLSI Design for Engineers and Scientists, VLSI Design using FPGA & IC
