DEAN’S WELCOME
A Message from Dean Ernest J. Wilson III
Welcome to the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism!
As you will soon discover, USC Annenberg is known across campus and around
the world for our ideas, innovation, collaboration, entrepreneurial spirit and
leadership.
As an Annenberg student, you will learn that there is almost nothing in society
that doesn’t involve communication—it is at the heart of all the new technology
that has shaped our lives, and it is critical to our democracy.
This is a particularly exciting time to be a student of communication, journalism
or public relations. Now more than ever these disciplines are brimming with possibilities and need leaders
and innovators who will shape the fields of the future.
I hope you immerse yourself in your studies here, exploring all the academic avenues open to you. You
not only will learn to evaluate, analyze and apply what you have learned in broad areas of
communication, but you will have opportunities to become expert collaborators and researchers, critical
thinkers and interdisciplinary scholars. We want all our students to become literate in economics, new
media, participatory cultures, multicultural studies and more.
Annenberg’s faculty is among the best in the world, and they are dedicated to teaching you, the next
generation of communication leaders.
Through participation in internship opportunities and Annenberg’s student organizations, you will
develop your networking skills and broaden your thinking. Our international programs are outstanding,
designed to open doors to global communication and understanding so critical in today’s world. I hope
that you will be able to take advantage of these exciting opportunities, and I encourage you to join the
many USC faculty members and students who participate in programs in the diverse and vibrant
communities around campus.
The exciting courses, cutting-edge research, and atmosphere of achievement present at USC Annenberg
all add up to an undergraduate education that is second to none.
I am pleased that you have joined us, and I look forward to seeing your accomplishments.
Best wishes,
Ernest J. Wilson III, Ph.D.
Registration for Students in the Annenberg Master’s Programs
The pre-registration form will assist you in choosing your classes for
your first semester. Submit your pre-registration class request form to
your academic advisor by the date indicated on the form.
Approximately two weeks after submission, you will receive
confirmation of the pre-registration request and be notified which
classes have been department approved (d-cleared). All graduate classes
at Annenberg require departmental clearance.
Fall incoming domestic graduate students start registering for classes on
July 2. You can find your registration day and time through Web
Registration. Go to the USC website http://www.usc.edu, click on
"students" (top left) and then "Web Registration" (right side under
“Quick Links”). Your pin number is your 6-digit birth date. You will be able to register for your
fall classes through Web Registration any time after your assigned registration day and time.
Since International students are not able to register until they arrive at USC and have their
passport verified their confirmed pre-registration classes will be reserved.
The document that confirms your status as a USC student is the “Confirmation of Registration,”
which will be sent to you once you have completed the registration process. You can also access
your registration confirmation through OASIS. Be sure to keep your confirmation. Among other
things, a confirmation can smooth the way for library services.
To Avoid Holds Preventing You from Registering
1. As part of your admission application, you should have submitted an official copy of your
transcript conferring your Bachelor’s degree. If your final transcript was not submitted,
please have it sent to your academic advisor. Failure to submit this document before the
end of your first semester will prevent you from registering for future semesters.
Another option is to have an official copy sent to you. Do not open the envelope. Hand carry
the official transcript with your prior degree(s) conferred to the Degree Progress Department
(JHH 010).
2. Make sure you are in compliance with the mandatory measles immunization. If you have
not been previously cleared by the Student Health Center, you will be required to show proof
of immunity before registration is permitted. Proof may be faxed to the Health Center
Immunization Office at 213-740-9929. A photocopy of your medical record showing proof
of either having had the measles or a vaccination must be sent or taken to the Student Health
Center.
3. International students must also show proof of Tuberculosis screening. Students must
complete the screening in the United States or Canada within six months prior to enrollment.
The University Park Student Health Center will offer the screening during Orientation.
Schedule of Classes
The Schedule of Classes lists the courses offered each semester, provides detailed registration
procedures, and lists important dates i.e., last day to withdraw from a class and receive a refund.
The Schedule of Classes is located on the Web site at http://www.usc.edu/soc. The Schedule of
Classes does not accurately show the number of students that have been given permission to
take the class, or d-cleared for the class. It only shows the number of students that have
registered for the class.
5

OASIS
OASIS, USC’s Online Academic Student Information System, allows students to access part of
their student records online. Records that may be accessed include: registered course list,
enrollment verification, permit to register, completed course summary, grade report, current
billing balance, financial aid document status, financial aid summary, and STARS report. Use
your USC ID number, included in your admission letter, to login on to the USC New Student
Authentication Web site: http://www.usc.edu/NewTrojan. You can access OASIS through this
Web site. You are responsible for checking your student records on OASIS.
In order to avoid financial penalties, it is vital that you pay attention to the payment deadlines and
add/drop deadlines detailed in the Schedule of Classes and Registration Instructions.
1. Obtain registration appointment time from Web Registration.
2. Before you attempt to register for classes, please confirm your address is correct.
3. Visit OASIS http://www.usc.edu/oasis, select the change of address service and correct or
confirm your address.
4. Clear any restrictions indicated on your registration permit, including a mandatory advisement
requirement (check with your advisor if you have this restriction).
5. If you do not clear all restrictions, you will not be allowed to register for your classes.
6. To enroll in classes, proceed to any Internet-enabled computer and login to Web registration
http://www.usc.edu/webregistration.
7. Click the Add link next to the section you want.
8. Click the Schedule link next to each section you want to register in the Current Course
Selections list.
9. Click the Commit Changes button to register the section.
NOTE:
D-clearance for a class is not the same as enrolling in a class. You are not
registered in the class until you hit the Commit Changes button. You should
receive a confirmation that you are registered via e-mail.
A few days after you register, you may receive your registration confirmation and fee bill, and
settle your finances.
The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California
was founded in 1971 with generous support from Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg. In 1994, two of
USC’s related academic departments – Communication Arts & Sciences and Journalism – merged
with the Annenberg School, creating two distinct academic units within USC Annenberg: the School
of Communication and the School of Journalism.
Today, with more than 80 full-time faculty members, more than 2,100 undergraduate and graduate
students, and dozens of research and public interest projects and programs, USC Annenberg has
become a center for discussion among scholars and professionals in journalism, communication,
public policy, media and education.
Every human advancement or reversal can be understood
through communication. The right to free communication
carries with it the responsibility to respect the dignity of
others, and this must be recognized as irreversible.
Educating students to communicate this message effectively
and to be of service to all people is the enduring mission of
this school.
USC Policies & Procedures
Class Attendance
Please be sure to attend the first class meetings of your Annenberg classes or the instructors may drop
you from their class. The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism adheres to the
university policy, which states that “an instructor may replace any student who without prior consent
does not attend the first two class sessions of the semester, or the first class session for once-a-week
classes. It is then the student’s responsibility to withdraw officially from the course through the
Registration Department”.
Grading
Graduate students must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average to graduate from the
university. Students who fall below a 3.0 GPA will be placed on academic probation.
Conditions for Removing a Grade of Incomplete:
If an “IN” is assigned as the student’s grade, the instructor will fill out the Incomplete Completion
form which will specify to the student and the department the work remaining to be done, the
procedures for its completion, the grade in the course to date and the weight to be assigned to the
work remaining to be done when computing the final grade. A student may remove the “IN” by
completing only the portion of required work not finished as a result of documented illness or
emergency occurring after the 12 th week of the semester. Previously graded work may not be
repeated for credit. It is not possible to remove an “IN” by re-registering for the course, even within
the designated time.
Time Limit for Removal of an Incomplete:
One calendar year is allowed to remove an “IN”. Individual academic units may have more stringent
policies regarding these time limits. If the “IN” is not removed within the designated time, the course
is considered “lapsed”, the grade is changed to an “IX” and it will be calculated into the grade point
average as “0” points. Courses offered on a credit/no credit basis will be lapsed with a mark of “NC”
and will not be calculated into the grade point average.
Missing Grade (MG)
Marks of “MG” must be removed before a degree or certificate will be awarded. If a student wishes
to graduate and chooses not to resolve the mark(s) of “MG”, the mark(s) will be defaulted to mark(s)
of “UW”.
Time Limit for Resolution of a Missing Grade:
One calendar year is allowed to remove an “MG”. If an “MG” is not removed within one year, the
grade is changed to “UW” and it will be calculated into the grade point average as “0” grade points.
Audited Courses
Students may elect to audit courses during the first three weeks of the semester or third week
equivalency for any session that is scheduled for less than15 weeks. A course taken for audit (V) will
be assessed at the current tuition rate. A course for audit (V) will not receive credit and will not
appear on the USC transcript or grade report. A course taken for audit is not included in enrollment
purposes of receiving financial aid. Under no circumstances will the university allow a petition to
request to change the registration status of a course from a letter grade or credit to audit (V) or vice
versa after the third week of a given semester or the third week equivalency for any session that is
scheduled for less than 15 weeks.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The University of Southern California maintains the privacy of student education records and allows
students the right to inspect their education records as stated in the university's Student Education
Records policy, consistent with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of
1974 (FERPA). The entire text of the university's policy is located in the Office of the General
Counsel and in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. A summary also appears in the
current edition of the student guidebook, SCampus. Additional information regarding FERPA policy
and provisions may be found on the Registrar's Web site http://www.usc.edu/registrar.
Faculty and staff who request access to student academic records in order to execute their normal
duties must first review the information found on the FERPA Web site and complete the tutorial
before access will be granted.
Students wishing to review or seeking to amend their educational records should submit a written
request to the university office in which the record is maintained. At the discretion of university
officials, USC may release certain information classified as directory information unless the student
requests that such information not be released. A complete listing of directory information is
published in SCampus in the Student Education Records section and is also found in the FERPA
section of the Registrar's Web site.
Students wishing to restrict release of directory information may do so by completing the appropriate
form provided by the Registrar's Office (JHH Lobby). Such requests remain in effect for the academic
year. Students wishing only to have their information withheld from the online USC Student
Directory should contact the Registrar's Office (JHH 104).
Parents who wish to receive information from the education record of their son or daughter will not
be provided the information unless the student has completed a "Records Release Authorization"
form and submitted it to the Registrar's office. Students who complete this form authorize the
university to release specific information from their education records to approved individuals. The
form is available in the Registrar's office and may be downloaded on the university's FERPA Web
site at http://www.usc.edu/ferpa.
Policy on Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
The University of Southern California is committed to full compliance with the Rehabilitation Act
(Section 504) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As part of the implementation of this
law, the University will continue to provide reasonable accommodation for academically qualified
students with disabilities so that they can participate fully in the university's educational programs and
activities. Although USC is not required by law to change the "fundamental nature or essential
curricular components of its programs in order to accommodate the needs of disabled students," the
University will provide reasonable academic accommodation. It is the specific responsibility of the
university administration and all faculty serving in a teaching capacity to ensure the university's
compliance with this policy.
The general definition of a student with a disability is any person who has "a physical or mental
impairment which substantially limits one or more of such person's activities," and any person who
has "a history of, or is regarded as having, such an impairment." Reasonable academic and physical
accommodations include but are not limited to: extended time on examinations; substitution of
similar or related work for a non-fundamental program requirement; time extensions on papers or
projects; special testing procedures; advance notice regarding booklists for visually impaired and
10

some learning disabled students; use of academic aides in the classroom such as note takers and sign
language interpreters; accessibility for students who use wheelchairs and those with mobility
impairments; and need for special classroom furniture or special equipment in the classroom.
Procedures for Obtaining Accommodations Students with
disabilities are encouraged to contact Disability Services and
Programs (DSP) prior to or during the first week of class
attendance or as early in the semester as possible. The office will
work with Classroom Scheduling, the course instructor, his or her
department and the student to arrange for reasonable
accommodations. It is the student's responsibility to provide
documentation verifying disability.
Students seeking academic accommodations due to a physical, psychological or learning disability
should make the request to the course instructor prior to or during the first week of class attendance or
as early in the semester as possible. Course instructors should require that a student present
verification of documentation of a disability from Disability Services and Programs if academic
accommodations are requested.
For assistance in how to provide reasonable accommodations for a particular disability, course
instructors are encouraged to consult with the staff at DSP. Students requesting academic
accommodations must have verification of disability. Contact information for Disability Services is
http://www.usc.edu/directories/dept/disability.html
Grievance Procedure
Detailed information about processing a grievance is found in the Student Grievance Procedure
section of SCampus, a guidebook for USC students, and in a brochure available in the Disability
Services and Programs office, STU 301.
The USC Catalogue
The USC Catalogue is the document of authority for all students. The degree requirements listed in
the USC Catalogue supersede any information which may be contained in any bulletin of any school
or department. The University reserves the right to change its policies, rules, regulations and course
offerings at any time.
The link to the USC Catalogue is: http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/catalogue/
Students are expected to be familiar with university policies and to monitor their own academic
progress. They should keep all records of official grades earned, degree requirements met,
transfer credits accepted and actions taken on requests for substitutions or exceptions to
university policies and regulations. ~ Excerpted from the USC Catalogue
USC’s International Student Orientation
International students are required to attend the USC International Student Orientation (please refer to
the Web at www.usc.edu/orientation). If you have questions or problems that are not answered at this
Web site, contact the Office of Orientation at 213-740-7767.
Transcripts
Students may obtain both official and unofficial transcripts in person at the Registration Building, or
online at www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/transcripts as early as when the students’ grades are finalized for
their first semester at USC.
Academic Integrity at USC
The University as an instrument of learning is predicated on the
existence of an environment of integrity. As members of the
academic community, faculty, students and administrative staff
share the responsibility for maintaining this environment. Faculty
has the primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining an
atmosphere and attitude of academic integrity such that the
enterprise may flourish in an open and honest way. Students share
this responsibility for maintaining standards of academic
performance and classroom behavior conducive to the learning
process. Administrative staff is responsible for the establishment
and maintenance of procedures to support and enforce those
academic standards. Thus, the entire university community bears
the responsibility for maintaining an environment of integrity and
for confronting incidents of academic dishonesty.
~ Excerpted from the USC Catalogue
Specific guidelines governing academic integrity are described in SCampus. Additional information
can also be found on the Student Judicial Affairs and Community Standards Web site at
www.usc.edu/student-affairs/SJACS.
SCampus http://web-app.usc.edu/scampus
SCampus contains both general guidebook information for students as well as university policies
concerning student conduct, administrative procedures, and student rights and responsibilities.
Students are responsible for understanding and abiding by policies contained in SCampus.
Financial Aid ~ Graduate and Professional Students
WEB SITE: http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/grad
Financial support for graduate study at USC is available from many sources. Most graduate
departments and professional schools offer fellowship and graduate assistantship opportunities. In
support of the university's commitment to diversity, fellowships are set aside for minority students
from groups now under-represented in doctoral study. The USC Financial Aid Office administers
federal and state financial aid programs. Several federal agencies and private foundations offer
support for students engaged in research in specific fields of study. In addition, many corporations
provide fellowships or tuition reimbursements for their employees.
Application Procedures for Federal Financial Aid
Master students can apply for the Federal Stafford Loan program by submitting a Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor and a Supplemental Form for Financial Aid
to the USC Financial Aid Office.
Federal Loans
Full-time (eight or more units) master students with exceptionally high financial need who meet all
application deadlines are considered for Federal Perkins Loans. Repayment begins nine months after
the borrower ceases to be enrolled at least half time.
Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans are also available for master students.
Repayment begins six months after the borrower ceases to be enrolled at least half time. The Health
Professions Student Loan program provides loans to master students in the health professions.
Federal Work-Study
The Federal Work-Study program enables eligible students to earn part of their financial aid award
either on campus or with an approved off-campus employer. Only full-time (eight or more units)
master students with high financial need who meet all application deadlines are considered for this
program.
Completing Your Program at Annenberg
Graduating
During the semester prior to your graduation,
make an appointment with your academic advisor
in the Annenberg Student Services office to
conduct a degree check of your graduation
requirements.
Using the STARS report, students verify they
have completed all of the degree requirements. To
graduate, master student candidates must earn a
minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and
complete the number of units required for their
program.
Commencement
USC holds a Commencement ceremony every May for all students who complete degree programs
during the academic year (the previous fall, the current spring, and those who anticipate finishing in
summer). Annenberg hosts its own graduation (satellite) ceremonies for its students on the same day
following the USC ceremony (generally the second Friday in May).
Students may request permission to participate in the Annenberg satellite Commencement ceremony
in May even if they do not anticipate completing their degree program until the following fall
semester. While such students are not eligible to be listed in the university-published
Commencement Program, they may have their name listed in the Annenberg Commencement
Program and may participate in the ceremony.
Neither USC nor Annenberg distribute actual diplomas at Commencement. Students who participate
in the satellite ceremony receive a diploma cover and a certificate of participation. Degrees are
conferred only after all degree requirements are verified. It will take approximately 4 – 6 weeks for
students to receive their diplomas, which are mailed by the Diploma Coordinator. It is important that
your mailing address is correct in the USC system.
Any student wishing to verify completion of their degree before their diploma arrives may order a
final transcript as soon as all degree requirements are verified and the degree is conferred. Students
should contact their advisor for the exact date of conferral.
Glossary
To find a USC employee: https://my.usc.edu/wp/faculty/SearchForm.do
Abbreviations and acronyms used at Annenberg and campus-wide:
Schools & Departments at USC are represented by four-letter acronyms and may be found in the
Schedule of Classes, campus maps and in reference to campus room locations, for example:

The School of Communication is COMM
The School of Journalism is JOUR
Buildings at USC are represented by three-letter acronyms, for example:

The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is ASC
Taper Hall of Humanities is THH
Doheny Main Library is DML
Leavey Library is LVL
Rooms are indicated in the Schedule of Classes and elsewhere by a combination of the three-letter
code for the building plus the room number: e.g., room 205 in the Annenberg Building is referred to
as ASC 205.
Calendars at USC indicate the day of the week with the abbreviations M T W TH F. Semesters
are indicated by the last two digits of the year plus the number of that year's term: e.g., Fall 2012 is
123, Spring 2013 is 131 and Summer 2013 is 132.
Telephone extensions on campus are represented by their last 5 digits. The two most common
numbers are the prefix “740,” and thus most extensions begin with “0", and “821" thus the prefix
“1.” For example, x00900 is the Student Services front office number; you can dial it from on-campus
phones by just dialing 00900. However, from off campus, you would dial 1-213-740-0900. When
calling from a campus phone, dial 9 to get an outside line to call off-campus numbers.
Other important abbreviations:
ACGSA – Annenberg Communication Graduate Student Association, the student organization for the
doctoral students at Annenberg.
ASCMA – Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Master’s Association, student
organization for the master students at Annenberg.
ITS – Information Technology Services, encompassing online and library services, such as the USC
library databases.
