DRIVING
WAGGLE IT
Have no fear!
Calm any tee shot nerves by preparing properly
Fault: Nerves and poor preparation
on the tee leading to wild misses.
Fix: Nerves affect even the game’s
greatest players when they’re faced
with a daunting tee shot to a fairway
they must hit, so you are certainly not
alone. However, finding ways to control
them is vital for your scorecard and
state of mind. Step back and study
what lies ahead before teeing the ball
up. Then introduce a few movements
before you hit the ball (right) to help
you ease in to the shot and find
more fairways.
Use your shape
I naturally draw the ball
and want to miss the
fairway bunker shown here,
so have teed up on the left
to give myself plenty of
margin. This allows me to
start the ball on the bunker
and draw it around.
To relieve tension, you have to introduce
some gentle motion into your pre-shot
routine. Waggling the driver a few times
before you start your swing will relax your
body while maintaining your focus.
HOVER IT
Raising the clubhead slightly off the
ground at address like Bubba Watson will
also help you. It focuses your mind and
eliminates any physical tension as you try
to gently hold the club in place.
