Margarita Vargas-Machuca, a winner in the Hayes School of Music 2011-2012 Concerto-Aria
Competition, began playing the violin and piano at the age of 8 in her hometown, Málaga (Spain.)
She finished her studies in Spain, studying with Farid Fasla and Pedro León in Madrid and was
awarded the ¨Best Spanish Music Interpreter¨ prize. She later moved to Germany, where she
continued her studies with Ichiko Fujise and Christopher Hogan at the Hamburger Konservatorium
where she discovered a true love for the viola.
Margarita has performed in orchestras such as: Orquesta de Radiotelevisión Española, Orquesta de la
Comunidad de Madrid, Hamburger Symphoniker, Kieler Oper, etc. Being an active orchestral player has
not interfered with her performances as a soloist and chamber musician in many Spanish and
European cities. As a teacher, Margarita has taught in Germany at the Akademie Hamburg and the
Musikschule in der Nordheide. The Norddeutsche Sinfonietta in Rendsburg hired her for their lab orchestra
to develop their chamber music program, performing concerts through Germany from 2001-2008.
Her interest in taking music beyond the stage convinced her participate in tours to places where
access to classical music was very limited, discovering that music is a necessity for the human being,
and not a privilege for a few to enjoy. Margarita is an energetic artist with an ability to transmit
inspiration to audiences.
Currently she is pursuing the Master of Music Performance degree at Appalachian State University,
studying with Eric Koontz. She enjoys taking walks along the seashore and doing different crafts with
her two lovely children, Noel and Inés.
