ASHLEY WRIGHT MCINTYRE LECTURE SERIES
ESTABLISHED AT THE CHEROKEE GARDEN LIBRARY
By Carter Morris, CGL President
The Cherokee Garden Library recently
received a very moving and generous
gift. In searching for a meaningful
way to commemorate Ashley Wright McIntyre,
Raymond McIntyre and his children,
Constance Ashford McIntyre and F. Raymond
McIntyre IV, have created an endowment at
the Cherokee Garden Library in her memory.
The funds will be used to support occasional
lectures and programs presented by the
Cherokee Garden Library and will be called
the Ashley Wright McIntyre Lecture Series.
Raymond McIntyre has graciously agreed
to serve on the newly-formed Cherokee
Garden Library Programming Committee
that is ably led by Jane Whitaker. This group
will recommend speakers for the Ashley
Wright McIntyre Lectures. The inaugural
event will be held at the Cherokee Garden
Library on Wednesday evening, October 21,
2009. Please plan to attend this very special
lecture. Details will be forthcoming.
In addition, the endowment is open-ended,
meaning contributions can be made to the
Ashley Wright McIntyre Endowment of the
Cherokee Garden Library at any time.
As the fund grows, future programs will
be enhanced.
Ashley McIntyre was a devoted wife, mother,
daughter, sister, and friend. Over the years
she shared her many talents and interests
with the Cherokee Garden Club and the
Cherokee Garden Library. Her garden and
home were always elegant, warm, and
welcoming. Her style, grace, and wit are
missed by many.
Ashley Wright McIntyre
Following are three tributes by friends and
family of Ashley Wright McIntyre that help
express how truly special she was. What an
honor it is for the Cherokee Garden Library
to host lectures in memory of this Atlanta
native and garden lover. We will take this
trust seriously and present programs of the
highest standard. And each event will
provide another opportunity to recall our
happy memories of Ashley.

REMEMBERANCES OF ASHLEY WRIGHT MCINTYRE
Words from Ashley’s Friend, Lisa Loudermilk deGolian (Mrs. Michael deGolian)
“Legend says that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy, and celebration. Hummingbirds open
our eyes to the wonder of the world and inspire us to open our hearts to loved ones and friends. Like a hummingbird,
we should aspire to hover and to savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and to celebrate
the joy of everyday. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every
personal connection has meaning, and laughter is life’s sweetest creation.” –Author Unknown
Anyone who knew Ashley will attest to her creative spirit, her incredible sense of humor, and her fiercely-guarded
positive attitude. To be in her company meant lots of smiles and laughter. She lived life with grace, simple elegance,
and appreciation for all things beautiful. Because of its legend, Ashley chose the hummingbird as a metaphor for
life. She chose to savor and celebrate the joy in every day, spending much of that joyful time in her own garden.
There, she created handmade hummingbird feeders to encourage them to share the day with her. When given the
choice, Ashley would always choose a garden picnic over a meal at a fine restaurant. For what was to be her final
earthly birthday, we celebrated the day picnicking in the beautiful gardens of the Honorable Anne Cox Chambers.
Mrs. Chambers knew how much Ashley appreciated the garden’s elegance and natural beauty. The day was the
ultimate gift to us all.
Words from Ashley’s Mother, Constance Ashford Wright (Mrs. Tate Wright, Jr.)
Ashley was every garden club’s ideal member. She enjoyed the meetings, arranging flowers, and watching them grow.
Her decorating skills spilled over into landscaping her grounds and those of a family farm in Watkinsville, Georgia.
She loved to entertain her family and friends at the farm, and was thrilled when her daughter, Ashford, wished to
celebrate her twenty-first birthday at the family farm with friends, fried chicken, a band, and lots of flowers.
Words from Ashley’s Sister, Constance Wright Howell (Mrs. Richard S. Howell)
I remember my sister Ashley saying to me one day, “Connie, you have such nice friends.” When I realized she was
referring specifically to my friends in the Cherokee Garden Club, I proposed her for membership. Over the years,
we shared some great garden club moments together. We laughed and muddled through a mass arrangement for the
Southeastern Flower Show. She adored floral design and was soon engaged to use her expertise for floral
arrangements for Seeger’s Restaurant. Every week she would arrive at Seeger’s with cut flowers to create beautiful
arrangements—one large and many smaller ones as well. During those years, my quince, Yoshino cherries, daffodils,
and anything else blooming was reserved for Ashley’s arrangements, no questions asked! Many a day, I would arrive
home and an entire shrub had been deflowered. We also collaborated on flower arranging projects at the Cathedral
of St. Philip. She became one of their best arrangers. We went to Cherokee Garden Club meetings together and even
represented the club at a Garden Club of America Annual Meeting. I cherished every moment.
MAJOR ACQUISITION IN HONOR OF ROBERT LEE MAYS
With gratitude for the generosity of the Besse
Johnson and George Blanton Allen Memorial
Foundation, the Cherokee Garden Library is
delighted to have been able to acquire a seminal historic
volume in honor of Robert Lee Mays, a Cherokee Garden
Library Board Member and valued advisor. For many years,
the Garden Library has been searching for John Buonarotti
Papworth’s Rural Residences consisting of a Series of
Designs for Cottages, Decorated Cottages, Small Villas,
and other Ornamental Buildings, accompanied by Hints on
Situation, Construction, Arrangement and Decoration, in
the Theory & Practice of Rural Architecture; interspersed
with Some Observations on Landscape Gardening
(London: Printed for R. Ackermann, by J. Diggens, 1818).
The Cherokee Garden Library already owns the other
significant Papworth volume: Hints on Ornamental
Gardening consisting of a Series of Designs for Garden
Buildings, Useful and Decorative Gates, Fences, Railroads,
&c: accompanied by Observations on the Principles and
Theory of Rural Improvement, interspersed with Occasional
Remarks on Rural Architecture (London: Printed for R.
Ackermann, by J. Diggens, 1823).
Born in London in 1775, John Buonarotti Papworth was a
prolific English architect, designer of landscapes, and town
planner. In addition to laying out many significant properties,
Papworth was a designer of myriad artifacts, including
furniture, textiles, and other decorative elements. He also
designed conservatories, entrance gates, coach houses,
stables, and the Gothic summer house at Claremont,
Surrey (1816), for Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and
later Princess Charlotte Augusta. From 1817 to 1820,
he prepared designs for the Park and Palace at Bad
Cannstadt, near Stuttgart, for King Wilhelm I. Although
only part of the Park was realized, Papworth was
honored with the title of “Architect to the King of
Württemberg.” Papworth was responsible for many
London shop fronts and other buildings, and was a pioneer
in the use of iron for construction purposes. His monument
to Lieutenant- Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon on the field
at Waterloo, Belgium in 1815 was an early example of a
broken column used as a memorial. He was a founding
member of the Institute of British Architects. He contributed
frequently to Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of Arts
Papers, entitled Architectural Hints. They were republished
as Rural Residences consisting of a Series of Designs for
Cottages, Decorated Cottages, Small Villas, and other
Ornamental Buildings . . . (1818), and in 1823 he
published designs for garden buildings as Hints on
Ornamental Gardening.
Today, Papworth’s volumes are studied extensively in
Europe and the United States by architects and landscape
architects. The addition of Papworth’s Rural Residences to
the Cherokee Garden Library greatly strengthens the
collection while honoring an important supporter and
advisor to the Garden Library.
Rural Residences . . . (1818).

EDWARD L. DAUGHERTY, A SOUTHERN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
EXHIBITION EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!
Sketch of Garden at Henrietta Egleston Hospital
for Children, 1958, Atlanta, Georgia, from the
Cherokee Garden Library collection
The Cherokee Garden Library is pleased to announce
the exhibition, Edward L. Daugherty, A Southern
Landscape Architect: Exploring New Forms, has
been extended to October 10, 2009. The exhibition traces
the seminal works in landscape architecture, urban planning,
conservation, and historic preservation created by Daugherty
from 1953 to the present.
With a vibrant practice that encompasses residential,
commercial, and institutional projects in eight states and
abroad, Edward L. Daugherty is one of the most significant
post-World War II landscape architects in Atlanta and the
Southeast. Although the breadth and depth of his work are
extensive, many common threads run through his designs.
However, nothing is more evident than his regard for
people: the landscape architects he has mentored, the
professionals he has collaborated with, and those his designs
touch. This sensibility was cultivated at the Graduate
School of Design at Harvard University where he learned
analytical thinking and the value of honoring the human
scale. While there, he adopted the dictum coined by landscape
architecture professor Norman Newton that continues to
guide his work: “Design can be good only insofar as it
does good.”
Visitors enjoy a discussion with Edward L. Daugherty
in the gallery.
The exhibit includes a sampling of significant projects from
Daugherty’s career: redevelopment of Marietta Square,
Georgia Governor’s Mansion, Georgia Institute of Technology,
All Saints Episcopal Church, Henrietta Egleston Hospital
for Children at Emory, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, and
Hahn Woods. The show also includes The Cultural Landscape
Foundation’s oral history module featuring Edward Daugherty.
Visit www.tclf.org to watch the module.
A very successful Gallery Talk held on February 26 featured
tours led by Mr. Daugherty and Spencer Tunnell. Over 70
guests enjoyed learning about the importance of good
landscape design, techniques used in creating landscape
drawings over the decades, and collections pertaining to
various landscape architects in the Garden Library.
Do not miss the opportunity to view this fascinating
exhibition! For more information or group tours,
please contact Staci Catron at 404.814.4046 or
WESTVIEW CEMETERY:
A CULTURAL LANDSCAPE WORTHY OF PRESERVATION
Westview Cemetery, established in 1884, is a historically significant
cultural landscape within the city of Atlanta, which visually illustrates
the evolving conception of the American cemetery. Founded as
“a landscape park, in which may safely rest the dead,” Westview
Cemetery is a breathtakingly beautiful place where history lives.
Reflecting significant characteristics of late-nineteenth century cemetery movements,
curvilinear drives divide the rolling terrain of Westview into large, rounded sections
of hallowed ground. Meanwhile, an amazing variety of mature trees and shrubs dot
the pastoral panorama. Willows, hemlocks, hickories, ginkgos, water oaks, white oaks,
loblolly pines, deodar cedars, and Italian cypress are just a few of the tree specimens
found here. Flowering trees and shrubs growing within the gates include southern
magnolias, native dogwoods, tea olives, crepe myrtles, hydrangeas, nandinas, and
rhododendrons. Burford hollies, a cultivar discovered here by and subsequently named
after one of the cemetery’s early superintendents, Thomas Burford, are also in abundance.
The diversity of tree and shrub specimens in the developed sections of the cemetery
equals that documented in the 1933 publication, The Garden History of Georgia,
1733-1933, and remains a character-defining feature of this sacred place.
In the older sections of the cemetery, distinctive, sculptural monuments and elaborate
grave markers dot the undulating landscape. The original stone gatehouse, crenellated
stone water tower, and receiving tomb built of Georgia marble and brick clearly mark
the site’s long history. However, in the northwest corner of the property, developed
as the Garden of Memories in the 1940s, Westview follows the memorial park pattern
popularized in the early twentieth century. Statuary gardens are surrounded by
sections of lawn where bronze grave markers lie flush to the ground. A serpentine
garden, bordered by sinuous stone walls, stretches across one section. The Garden of
Time, Pool of Quiet, and Boxwood Garden add visual interest to the landscape and
create central features encouraging reflection. Meanwhile, a memorial to the Battle of
Ezra Church commemorates the conflict that was fought on and around these grounds
just 20 years before the cemetery’s founding. Atop the highest hill in the northwest
portion of the cemetery, an elaborate masonry mausoleum dominates the landscape.
In the summer of 2008, the Georgia Historic Landscape
Initiative documented the history and current conditions
of Westview Cemetery and assessed the site’s significance
and level of integrity. The survey and accompanying
documentation, including numerous photographs, have
been placed on permanent file at the Cherokee Garden
Library at the Atlanta History Center. The Georgia
Historic Landscape Initiative, a partnership between
the Garden Club of Georgia, the National Park Service
Southeast Regional Office, the Historic Preservation
Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
and the Cherokee Garden Library, strives to document
the state’s historic landscapes, disseminate information
about its efforts, and ultimately promote the preservation
of a vital part of this state’s heritage. So far, 109 historic
landscapes have been documented through the efforts
of volunteers, site managers, and research fellows.
The Cherokee Garden Library would like to thank its partners
for their continued support of this worthwhile endeavor.
