Bonifacio, Corse-Du-Sud
The medieval old town of Bonifacio is the
oldest and perhaps the most stunningly
beautiful town in Corsica. When approached
from the sea it is awe inspiring and a vision
to behold. Perched above the natural harbor
on the site of a 9th century citadel, the old town
sits in a spectacular setting atop whitewashed
limestone cliffs. From the port, take a walk
up the Escalier du Roi d’Aragon (King of
Aragon’s Steps), the 187 stairs that lead up
to the haute ville. Enjoy your day strolling the
cobbled streets and back alleys while shopping
and dining. For a bit more adventure take a boat
ride to the caves or a walk through the tunnel
inside the citadel walls. Evenings come alive
along the waterfront with seaside dining and late
night bars along the Caveau. Bonifacio is one of
the most memorable ports I have visited in the
Western Mediterranean.
Corsica
The beauty of chartering a yacht is that you really can have it all.
Embarking at the Côte d’Azur means an easy flight and transfer and
access to some of the most iconic ports in the world. Just as you tire
of the whirl of restaurants, shopping and beach bars, a short overnight
cruise will take you to the beautiful island of Corsica where the
island’s coastline changes from rugged mountains to rocky cliffs and
wild beaches. Step ashore in Calvi for fresh seafood at Bout du Monde
followed by drinks at Chez Tao. Just 27 nautical miles south is the
pretty fishing village of Girolata. Visit in the early evening and watch
the sun set over the red cliffs.
At the southern tip of Corsica, the perilously-perched Bonifacio
offers more sophistication. Cantilevered out of the limestone cliff, the
town overlooks the cafe-lined harbor below. The southern coastline
of Corsica is dotted with beaches with impossibly blue water, and
the nearby Îles Lavezzi is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
From here, cruise into Italian waters and spend a peaceful night’s
anchorage at the beautiful Maddalena Islands before you step ashore
to the hustle and bustle of Porto Cervo on Sardinia.
Two islands, perfectly in the center of the
allure elite travelers as their neighboring
coastlines. On the shores of Corsica and
Sardinia you will find chic beach clubs to
rival those of Saint-Tropez, coastlines as
impressive as Amalfi and offshore islands as
empty as the Tuscan Archipelago. Culture,
too, reflects mainland influences: Corsica,
having been sold to Paris by Genoa in 1769
shows a degree of French influence, not
only in language but also in cuisine and
Sardinia, Italy’s largest island, is popular with
Calvi is a picturesque gateway to Corsica’s dramatic west coast. At its
center is the imposing citadel and its battle-scarred walls shelter the
marina where you board your yacht. After you have unpacked, Calvi’s
winding streets make for an attractive evening stroll; this seafaring town
was the supposed birthplace of Christopher Columbus in 1451 and also
the battleground where Nelson lost an eye in 1794. With many harborside
restaurants serving award-wining cuisine, Calvi is also very much
the culinary capital of north Corsica.
This piano bar is not only Calvi’s coolest spot to listen to live music;
it also has a legendary history. Chez Tao literally means ‘the home of
who founded this institution in a 16th century former bishop’s palace
in the 1930s. The grand following that it once had has changed little in
over 70 years and Chez Tao remains popular with locals and tourists
who seek good cocktails and a lively music scene. For a memorable
pre-cruise drink, arrive at Chez Tao early and grab a table on the
As soon as Calvi’s citadel slips from view Corsica’s dramatic west coast
begins to build and red rocks start to jut sporadically skywards out of the
sea the further south you sail. The crescendo surfaces in Scandola nature
reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and home to some truly
bizarre spectacles that could resemble the landscape of Mars. These rock
formations are best seen from the water, but to explore more intimately,
have the crew take you closer in the yacht’s tender. Just within the park
is Girolata, a tiny village in a vast bay protected by cliffs of the same red
rock. It is the perfect refuge on Corsica’s west coast and a safe anchorage
in which to spend the night. In the evening have dinner alfresco so you can
watch the sun go down and witness the dramatic red hues of the rocks that
change with the light from the sunset.
of his products, so expect such regional classics as spider crabs, rock lobster, wild boar, local berries and
chestnuts, plus a variety of locally produced vegetables. Its not often that a chef can combine both the best
Bonifacio’s citadel, perched precariously on
Corsica’s southern tip, is the island’s most
iconic image and a spectacular sight from sea
visible through the crack in the limestone cliffs
is Bonifacio’s sheltered little harbor. Once at
city a maze of narrow lanes wind their way
Leading down again to the sea is the Escalier
Fish comes from the local fisherman Damien Catoire, fresh bread is
brought daily from Boulangerie Faby, bulging and olives are supplied
Combined with Lebrun’s deep understanding of gastronomy these
Porto-Vecchio is one of the West Mediterranean’s great understated
destinations; it is Corsica’s most fashionable town, its liveliest resort
and its culinary hub with more Michelin stars than anywhere else on
the island. But its location on the island’s east coast means it also has
some of the finest beaches – Palombaggia Beach is regularly voted as
one of the Mediterranean’s finest. Head inland a little and the scene
changes entirely as smart resorts are replaced with the Alta Rocca
massif rising towards Corsica’s interior. The way of life in Corsica’s
inland villages heralds back to another time and a short drive, hike or
where he was awarded his first Michelin star at the Carpaccio Restaurant.
Bisetto now holds two Michelin stars at Casadelmar. This, he modestly claims,
is partly down to the raw ingredients that are so readily available in Corsica, so
expect the menu to have a strong seasonal influence and no shortage of fresh
products. But it is the preparation of these ingredients that has earned Bisetto
his two stars. The element of gastronomy is flawless in dishes such as absintheflavored
foie gras, cherry-apricots and aniseed brioche, as a starter, or veal
cheek braised in Prosecco and sweet potato cream with 50-year-old balsamic
offer a true Robinson Crusoe paradise where
you can claim whole bays entirely to yourself.
Budelli is famous for its beach, Spiaggia Rosa,
which literally translates as ‘pink sand’, so
called because of the faded pink color of the
shore that featured in Antonioni’s movie
Il Deserto Rosso. Eventually cruise south for
an evening at Baja Sardinia, the gateway to
the Costa Smeralda, Sardinia’s answer to the
French Riviera. Anchor just off Phi Beach to
have your yacht admired by the partygoers
and celebrities who frequent this fashionable
beach club.
The venue is a converted fishing boat moored off the island of Santo
Though the novelty of floating dining may have worn off, the cuisine
Scattered among smooth granite rocks and white sands, Phi Beach is a beach club to rival any of those
Bedouin tents, spread in between the rocks, or alfresco in Phi’s immaculate garden. As darkness falls the
Days flow into each other when holidaying on the Costa Smeralda.
With little history or grandeur, there is much time left to simply relax
in luxury amid beautiful surroundings. This day’s itinerary leaves little
option to deviate from the previous: cruise up the coast stopping at
emerald beaches, dining in exquisite restaurants and using the yacht’s
onboard water sports equipment. With all this laid back glamour you
may be tempted to spend the night in the quiet bay of Cala di Volpe or
designer Robert Trent Jones Sr, Pevero is a beautifully maintained par
Day 7: Baja SaRDiNia To PoRTo RoToNDo
11 NaUTicaL MiLES
The seventh day’s cruise will take you from the beginning of the Costa
Smeralda to the end. Built almost entirely by the Aga Khan in the 1960s, it
was designed as a yachting haven – and with a name that literally translates
as ‘Emerald Coast’ and some of the Mediterranean’s finest beaches it is
not hard to see what attracts celebrities and elite travelers back year after
year. Indeed, with its Caribbean-quality beaches combined with European
glamour some even go so far as to declare it the most beautiful corner of
the Mediterranean. Spend the day stopping off at some of these legendary
beaches: Liscia Ruja is the largest and the place to be seen, Spiaggia del
Principe is apparently the Aga Khan’s favorite, and other classics include
Romazzino, Spiaggia Pevero and Capriccioli. Anchor for the night in one of
these coves or in Porto Rotondo, the Aga Khan’s purpose-built marina.
Cala di Volpe’s iconic architecture – the pink colored walls and white stucco
arches make a unique backdrop to the Cala Rrestaurant. Executive Chef Franco
Guardone delights in the fresh and the local: over a wood fire fresh fish is grilled
to perfection, pasta is prepared daily and then there are the deserts: homemade
gelatos, fruit compotes and cakes flavored with Sardinian honey and almonds.
CRUISING ITINERARY DAY 9 – 10
Day 9 – 10: PoRTo cERVo
At the very heart of Costa Smeralda lies Porto Cervo, a town designed
for the sole purpose of hosting superyachts. Every summer some of
the largest and most extravagant yachts make their homage to this
unique town built in rustic Sardinian style in the 1960s by the Aga Khan.
It is like a purpose-built Monaco without the grandeur, or Saint Tropez
with the celebrities but without the crowds. Yacht crews specially
prepare their boats to be admired by spectators while their guests slip
ashore to explore the town’s legendary fashion boutiques, gourmet
restaurants and renowned nightclubs, which are never short of famous
faces. During the day yachts, or their tenders, can whisk guests to
neighboring beaches before returning for an evening spent enjoying
Porto Cervo’s lavish night scene.
Porto Cervo. Having set up his restaurant on the headland overlooking
Golfo Pevero nearly forty years ago, each summer from March to October
more and more diners make their way to sample Pedrinelli’s brilliant
cuisine. The large white restaurant sits overlooking a semi-tropical garden
through large curtained arches. Modernity bedecks this interior while the
garden, when lit up by candlelight during a summer’s evening, becomes a
truly special place to dine. For further exclusivity there is a private dining
room seating 50 people, and for those who wish to sample this unique
Sardinian cuisine, but don’t have time to factor Pedrinelli into their itinerary,
the restaurant can make deliveries onboard yachts and private jets.
but nowhere is the view more impressive than onboard. Although first commissioned by the Qatari Royal
Family, Indian Empress is now owned by the Indian business tycoon Dr Vijay Mallya who is known for
hosting lavish on-board parties during the Grand Prix motor racing season. In keeping with Mallya’s taste
all five decks have subtle Indian furnishings but there are also European touches provided by Dali, Renoir
and Picasso. Indian Empress is so well equipped, guests need hardly step ashore: there is an oversized
Jacuzzi, a fully staffed beauty saloon, and a private office with adjacent PA station and gym. But when
the time comes for going ashore there are numerous tenders to ferry guests and even a helicopter pad.
Furthermore, with 30 crew far outnumbering the 12 guests Indian Empress can accommodate, there is no
shortage of excellent service.
Leisure and recreation: 2 x 26 foot (8.1 meter) custom tenders with 230hp, 2 x Yamaha 1000cc 2 person
jet-skis, dive equipment (for rendezvous diving only), 4 x Sea-Doo jet skis, 4 x SeaBob sea scooters,
2 x windsurfers, 2 x sea kayaks, waterskis, wakeboards and towables. A beauty salon includes a massage
room, sauna, steam room, two shower rooms and a full medical suite.
One of the giants of the Lürssen fleet, Polar Star was created to offer guests limitless cruising.
Her steel ice-class hull and long distance standards are not, however, out of place on a glamorous
Mediterranean shoreline. The six guest suites have all been placed on the main deck completing
a clever division between crew and guest accommodation. All are en-suite, and the master suite
is even double en-suite, featuring ‘his’ and ‘hers’ bathrooms as well as panoramic views forward
through generous windows. There is capacious outdoor deck space and a spa pool on the owner’s aft
deck that holds 10. In addition, Polar Star’s refit will be completed in time for this summer season in
the Mediterranean. The newly upholstered interior will give the yacht a fresh contemporary feel and
the new outdoor cinema on the sundeck will most certainly be a popular addition.
Capri is an elegant and sophisticated creation from the world-renowned
Lürssen shipyard. The spacious and comfortable interior designed by
Glade Johnson is a stunning mix of inlaid marble, burled woods and silk
fabric upholstery; perfect for sophisticated entertaining. There is a forward
observation lounge – unique to Capri – that provides unrivaled views from both
inside and out. The innovative design does not stop here; the grand sky lounge
is unique in size and décor. Completely furnished in white, it houses a home
theater, a full bar and two separate seating areas for indulgent get-togethers.
The 22-foot Chris Craft tender, launched through Capri’s side hull door, is a
most elegant way to arrive ashore. Indeed, these classic wooden speedboats
have become sought-after yachting accessories in their own right.
Lady Natinia is one of few luxury superyachts that are able to combine
intricate opulence with incredible speeds. With a cruising speed
averaging 20 knots and top speed approaching 30, she is able to glide
effortlessly between destinations, allowing her guests more time to see
and explore each one – a rare advantage. The interior is not what you
would expect from a high-speed yacht: the four cabins are all en-suite,
and the master cabin, the most spacious, has its own Jacuzzi tub that
doubles up as a steam room. The two twin rooms are easily converted
into doubles giving a welcome degree of flexibility to guests. There is
ample dining and lounging space, a Jacuzzi on the sundeck and a gym
This stunning schooner, a modern recreation of the 1928 Trans-Atlantic
Race holder designed by Nathaniel G Herreshoff, is a wonder to behold.
Under full canvas Elena will attract admirers and she will certainly turn
heads in port. Her spacious teak decks provide an abundance of room for
an entire race crew, a cocktail party of 80 guests or, alternatively, plenty
of room for relaxing and sunbathing. Elena’s interior, in accordance with
the original designs, is a masterpiece of mahogany wood paneling with
gracious fittings. But don’t take this yacht for granted, for underneath
her classical hull and luxury amenities lies a true racing pedigree that
can be put to the test during Mediterranean classics such as Le Voile de
Barong C is a yacht built for show: the simple lines of this 94 foot (29 meter)
sloop are enhanced by her dark navy color and absence of mooring winches,
cleats, anchors or sheets with both furling mainsail and jib. As a result the
clear teak space can be used for entertaining or relaxing in the sun. The cockpit
seats 10 for alfresco dining and the aft deck can be transformed into one large
sunbathing pad. Barong C’s interior was specially designed in accordance with
the owner’s request to live onboard comfortably for several months. You will
therefore find the owner’s stateroom with its en-suite bathroom and office
positioned amidships, where motion of the yacht is less obvious. There is also a
generous double guest cabin with en-suite bathroom – also amidships.
Overlooking its own emerald bay Cala di Volpe is not only Sardinia’s most
stylish hotel, it is among the most sought after in the Mediterranean.
From the outside, however, this hotel hides its merits in a shroud of
tradition and understatement; designed by architect Jacques Couëlle
in 1963, it resembles a crumbing fort with turrets, white stucco arches
and faded hues of pink and yellow. A canal winds its way into the center
of the hotel from which guests can hop on a boat to the Maddalena
Islands just offshore. Inside this rustic palace are 120 rooms and suites
all individually designed with their own terrace and two spectacular
restaurants. Golfers will love the neighboring Pevero Golf Course.
TOP SUITE
UNIQUE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE
Square footage: 2,700 Nightly rate: $45,400
Why we love it: The lavish and Unique Presidential Suite is one of the
world’s most expensive hotel suites for a good reason. Occupying Cala di
Volpe’s rambling tower, it has three en-suite double bedrooms, two open
plan living rooms, a private pool, an alfresco gym, a steam room and a
private wine cellar, which is stocked with some of Italy’s finest vintages.
The rooftop terrace is undoubtedly this suite’s finest spot with its pool,
gazebo, lounging and dining areas, and from its high position guests
can admire the Costa Smeralda’s stunning sunsets. The service is also
impeccable – a butler is on call 24 hours a day to cater for every whim
Hotel Pitrizza is barely recognizable when approached from the sea. In fact it
was the intention of architect Luigi Vietti, who designed this hotel in 1963, to
blend it entirely into the landscape. The result is a series of villas with granite
walls and roof gardens – and there are even giant granite boulders in the
saltwater swimming pool. The Pitrizza’s private beach, which overlooks the
bay of Liscia di Vacca, is a short walk from the iconic pool through a garden of
rosemary bushes. From here the hotel can arrange a boat to take you to the
Maddalena Islands for the day. In the main clubhouse you will find a fitness
the finest in the region, well known for its Italian cuisine.
a large open lounge and a private wine cellar all furnished in a wholesome
mixture of terracotta, pastel and wood. But this suite’s selling point does not
lie indoors, outside the sprawling terrace overlooks the perfect emerald sea
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda hosts this prestigious rally for classic and
in 1982 and quickly caught the imagination of the owners of these vintage
Bonifacio is not merely a safe anchorage or
sheltered marina, it is one of the Mediterranean’s
most iconic harbors. The sheltered natural harbor
has accommodated various navies for centuries
and its iconic citadel, perched atop the cliff,
guards the harbor’s narrow entrance. Today, each
summer sees Bonifacio’s long harbor channel fill
up with yachts, their owners and guests curious to
witness one of Corsica’s main attractions.
