Venture into the subterranean world of Derinkuyu, one of more than 100
underground cities in Cappadocia. Built in the 7th and 8th centuries, these cities
were used by Christians to escape Roman persecution. Only a handful are
open to the public. Derinkuyu has 11 floors, is 85 meters (279 feet) deep and
can accommodate up to 50,000 people with livestock. It has stables, churches,
cellars, wine and oil presses, kitchens and an impressive school hall with a
barrel vaulted ceiling. Alternatively, visit Kaymakli city whose tunnels are still
used by villagers for storage and stabling.
FAirY ChiMneYs
60 million years ago the eruption of the volcanic Mount Erciyes and Mount
Hasandaği covered the Cappadocia region in lava and ash. Water and wind
eroded the soft rock, forming thin spires known as fairy chimneys. Carved into
dwellings by monks and master stonecutters, these magical rock formations
were used for living and worship for hundreds of years. The iconic fairy
chimneys now feature on the New 50 Turkish Lira banknote.
Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Göreme open-air museum has 30
BEST SHOPS
The Grand Bazaar, although very touristy, is a must see. With more than
58 covered streets and over 4,000 shops it is one of the oldest and largest
covered markets in the world.
İstinye Park shopping mall has a glass-roofed indoor retail area with
300 shops and is situated on a natural topographical ‘amphitheater’ of
residential neighborhoods.
BEST TO DO
Enjoy the local cuisine. The first thing you should do in Istanbul is sample
the local cuisine at one of Istanbul’s kebab houses.
Shop at the Grand Bazaar. Known the world over, there are some 4,000
merchants selling their wares on this series of covered streets.
Enjoy the Turkish baths. Whether you’d prefer to soak, steam or have a
massage, a relaxing visit to a traditional Turkish bath is a wonderful break.
Men and women bathe separately, so be sure to check the bath’s timetable.
Visit Istiklal Street. One of the city’s finer shopping and entertainment
districts, Istiklal Street is just a five minute walk from the Tomtom Suites.
Cruise the Bosphorus. Enjoy the beauty of Istanbul from the river
and marvel at how succeeding cultures have left their mark on the
city’s architecture.
Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents. The historic
European and modern Asian halves of Istanbul are separated by the
Bosphorus Strait. Istanbul is also unique for having capital status during
two successive empires: Byzantine and Ottoman and the legacy from both
is visible in the city today.
During the week eat breakfast at one of Istanbul’s riverside restaurants.
However, be aware that these restaurants get very busy at weekends
when most Istanbul residents eat breakfast out. After breakfast discover
the treasures of the historical peninsula with a professional licensed
guide, arranged by your concierge. Be sure to visit Hagia Sophia, the Blue
Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace.
For lunch, dine like a sultan on traditional Ottoman food at Karakol
Restaurant located in the gardens of Topkapi Palace. A tour of the
Bosphorus is highly recommended, as it is the only way to fully appreciate
the beauty of the river. Look out for Dolmabahce Palace, Rumeli
Castle and Beylerbeyi Palace. In the evening stroll through the popular
Asmalimescit, Tunel and Şişhane districts of the city.
The Pera Palace Hotel opened in 1895 to provide luxury accommodation
for the elite traveling to Istanbul on the newly extended Orient Express.
Restored and re-opened in 2010, this distinguished hotel remains a
worthy destination for today’s Elite Traveler. Agatha Christie regularly
visited the Pera Palace and was sufficiently inspired to write her
bestseller ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. Guests have the option to
stay in Christie’s favorite room, 411, where her diary was found hidden
under the floorboards. The Agatha Christie restaurant pays tribute to
three major destinations of the former Orient Express: Paris, Venice
and Istanbul, and serves a blend of French, Italian and Turkish cuisine.
Executive Chef Maximilian J.W. Thomae produces a new seasonal
tasting menu every month. For relaxation, try the new Pera Spa, which
offers a traditional Turkish bath of heady scented steams, silky soaps
and invigorating body scrubs.
In 1931 a long held dream became reality. Giuseppe Cipriani opened the
doors to Harry’s Bar. In a discreet stone building perched along a canal
just off Piazza San Marco in Venice, he created a timeless and impeccably
appointed establishment. His concept was to serve others as you would
want to be served yourself. His vision of simple luxury came to touch the
souls of people all over the world.
At Harry’s Bar in Venice, all clients are treated like royalty. Simple elements
such as true service and devotion have elevated Harry’s to legendary status.
In fact, in 2001, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Affairs declared Harry’s
Bar in Venice a national landmark, a unique honor bestowed not for the
establishments’s décor or furniture, but for its witness to the events of a
century in Venice.
The secret of Cipriani isn’t about what can be seen or touched, but what
can be felt and sensed. It is intangible but palpable. It can’t be patented,
but even after 75 years it hasn’t been duplicated by others.
The most popular dishes are: The World-Famous Bellini Cocktail, the
exquisite Carpaccio, perfect sandwiches and ice creams to die for - all
take their place among the pastas and risottos, the fish and Mediterranean
vegetables that make up some of the world’s finest food.
Four generations of Cipriani have developed a single restaurant into a world
renowned hospitality brand, still recognized for its distinguished venues and
service all over the world. They are located in New York, Hong Kong,
Los Angeles, Abu Dhabi, Venice, Porto Cervo, London and Istanbul.
The Cipriani Istanbul is a 2,500 square foot restaurant that seats 180
for 75. There is also the glass-enclosed ballroom offering city views from the
top floor of Edition Hotel, one of the finest hotels in Istanbul in the heart of
the Levent business district.
Cipriani is the restaurant of choice for anybody who really appreciates
the very finest Italian food. Cipriani Istanbul opens its doors 365 days of the
Eating here is a live history class...
Overlooking the Golden Horn, Asitane Restaurant is perched in the
foothills of Edirnekapı, considered by many to be one of the most
important areas of historical Istanbul. The restaurant lies in the
shadow of the mighty Chora Church, famous for its mosaics and one
of the most revered and well preserved buildings of the Byzantine era.
Asitane opened its doors in 1991, serving dishes reflecting the
eclectic nature of the Turco-Ottoman neighborhood. Asitane was
one of the many names given to Istanbul throughout the era of the
Ottoman Empire, and today Asitane Restaurant brings to life the
tastes of a glorious bygone era. After 20 years in hospitality, Asitane
now boasts an impressive archive comprising over 450 forgotten
sweet and savory recipes, prepared according to 500-year-old
cooking methods.
Asitane is open everyday from 11.45am to 11.30pm, serving indoors
during the winter, and in its beautiful garden in the summer. The
restaurant also caters for special events and offers a large selection
of fine Turkish wines to accompany your historic feast.
Rivaling the buildings of the European Renaissance, the Blue Mosque—built
An iconic monument of breathtaking beauty, Hagia Sophia – the Church of
the Holy Wisdom – stands stark against the Istanbul skyline; its Byzantine
domes and Turkish minarets instantly recognizable the world over. Built by
Constantine the Great, this immense structure was renowned as the world’s
largest place of worship for more than a thousand years. Once a church,
later a mosque and now a museum, Hagia Sophia is the perfect synthesis of
Byzantine and Ottoman architecture.
