Art Fair

Welcome to ART HK 08
We are delighted to welcome you all to the inaugural ART HK, the first truly international
art fair to be staged in Hong Kong in over a decade. With over 100 galleries from 20
countries showing the very best of 20th and 21st century art, ART HK 08 provides an
art fair for Asia that reflects the diversity of artistic production from all over the world. In
addition, we have organised surrounding exhibitions, events and talks which we hope will
make your visit to the Fair and your stay in Hong Kong a truly inspiring and enjoyable one.
More than just a place for buying and selling art, art fairs can also act as a catalyst for
discussion and debate. We are delighted therefore that Asia Art Archive (AAA) will be
presenting a programme of talks by leading artists, curators and collectors entitled Hong
Kong Conversations. In conjunction with the Chinese University of Hong Kong the AAA
will also be staging a conference that coincides with International Museum Day on
17 May - Shifting Sites: Cultural Desire and the Museum addresses the changing role of
museums in the 21st century.
As a reflection of our excitement at launching the Fair in Hong Kong, ART HK 08
presents a feature exhibition of work by emerging local artists curated by Sabrina Fung.
Mirage brings together the most exciting work by a new generation of up-and-coming
artists from Hong Kong, located at the heart of the Fair and surrounded by leading
galleries from the city.
We are grateful to our lead sponsor, Lehman Brothers, for their strong support, and
indeed to all our other partners for their significant involvement in helping in the
development of the Fair. We would also like to extend our sincerest thanks to our
Honorary Patron, Sir David Tang, our Advisory Group, the participating galleries, and our
visitors.
We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to seeing you back for next year’s Fair
taking place from 13 to 17 May 2009.
MIRAGE, an oasis of illusions at the heart of ART HK 08, explores the boundaries of the
imagination within a confined space. This exhibition of contemporary Hong Kong artists
is a journey into an unreal visual playground of concepts and forms that are not what
they appear at first glance. The elusive optical perceptions of the exhibited works are
further exaggerated by the site-specific, landscape structure specially created by Meta4.
The contoured structure, which hosts the exhibited artworks, resembles an “organic”
island, complete with trees, lotus flowers, and other seemingly natural forms.
Each participating artist in MIRAGE presents a unique vision with its own inherent
illusions, revealing varying degrees of isolation within urban contemporary life. Esther
Yip’s fascination with a self-contained universe of beings is evident in her fantastical
Happy Tree, which is comprised of over 4,000 handmade objects. The reflective passage
of Lotus by Catherine Lee presents a special moment of peace and tranquility.
Easter Yip, The Happy Tree
Catherine Lee, Lotus
Caroline Mak, Cellular Spaces
The organic landscape cells, spread through the site-specific Cellular Spaces by Caroline
Mak, reinvent natural formations that are at once both familiar and alien, strong yet
fragile. Wong Chung Yu explores the relationship between love, desire and money in his
imaginative, computerized depiction of Sodom, the ancient biblical city. Homan Ho’s
interest in kinetic architectural work takes form in his large, ramp-like structure with
moving objects (shoes) above the exhibition space.
Contemporary life, real and virtual, is a prevailing theme for this new generation of Hong
Kong artists exhibited in MIRAGE, providing a glimpse into our disorientating world as the
artists see it.
Hong Kong Conversations
Asia Art Archive is pleased to present Hong Kong Conversations, a series of talks by a
group of renowned collectors, artists and art experts within the Fair from 15 – 18 May.
Thursday 15 May, 4-5 pm
Hong Kong - Beijing Return: A conversation between artists Chow Chun-fai and Lam
Tung-Pan
Representing a new generation of HK artists, Chow Chun-fai and Lam Tung-pang
were amongst the first to establish studios in Fotan which now hosts over 70 artists
in 20 studios. In 2007, they set up their second studio in Beijing, joining a wave of
Chinese and international artists settling in the culture capital. They work and base
themselves in both cities.
For Hong Kong Conversations, Chow and Lam will discuss the development of their
artistic practice from Fotan to Beijing. Where HK artists tend to take a more passive
approach, Chow and Lam’s move to Beijing may be considered aggressive by their
counterparts. Why have they decided to set up a studio in Beijing? What are their
views on HK’s position and situation for artists? And what challenges do they face as
HK artists in Beijing, where they are considered foreigners in their own country?
Thursday 15 May, 6-7pm
Informed Taste: A conversation between collector Monique Burger and curator
Tobias Berger
Driven by passion and assisted by a few trusted galleries, the Swiss collector,
Monique Burger, has put together an impressive collection of more than 1000 works
of contemporary art since the 1990s. Since moving to Hong Kong in 2005, the
Burger Collection now includes works by over 20 Asians artists.
Tobias Berger, Director of Hong Kong's independent art space Para/Site also arrived
in Hong Kong in 2005, after having worked in Germany, Lithuania and New Zealand.
Since taking over the reigns of Para/Site, Berger has organised a number of shows in
HK to include artists like Lawrence Weiner and Dennis Oppenheim.
For Hong Kong Conversations, Burger and Berger will discuss the challenges of
successfully selecting artists, artworks and concepts in an art environment that is
still developing and defining its very own rules, while growing at an unprecedented
speed. In an environment with so few independent institutions, how does one go
about developing both an appreciative and critical relationship to contemporary art
production?
Friday 16 May, 6-7pm
Cultural Investment: A conversation between Henry Tang, Ronald Arculli and Sir
David Tang
Mr Henry Tang was appointed to the position of the Chief Secretary for
Administration of the HKSAR Government in July 2007. Prior to this appointment,
he was the Financial Secretary and formerly the Secretary for Commerce, Industry
and Technology. Before joining the Government in 2002, Mr Tang was a leading
industrialist in Hong Kong, and has a personal interest in the arts.
The Hon. Mr Ronald Arculli is a member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR
Government and Chairman of the HK Stock Exchange. On top of his numerous
business and community commitments, Arculli is an ardent supporter of the arts.
Founder and Chairman of The China Club and founder of Shanghai Tang, Sir David
Tang has a long history of community service and serves on the board of a number
of charities worldwide. Entrepreneur, designer and philosopher, Sir David is a
passionate collector of contemporary Chinese art.
For Hong Kong Conversations, Tang, Arculli and Sir David will discuss why they
personally enjoy and think art is important in their lives. They will also share their
views on some of the projects currently taking shape to develop art in Hong Kong
like the West Kowloon Cultural District Project and the Central Police Station. Despite
Hong Kong being one of the most developed cities in Asia, it is often referred to
as a cultural desert. Is this really the case? Hong Kong has some of the richest
individuals per capita, yet why is there so little private support or collectors for
contemporary art?
Sunday 18 May, 3-4pm
Space Exploration: A conversation between Elaine W. Ng and Zhang Wei
Editor and Publisher of ArtAsiaPacific (AAP) magazine, Elaine W. Ng lived in Hong
Kong in the 1990s during which she managed Videotage, one of Asia's first nonprofit
centres for film, video and new media.
Zhang Wei is a founding member and director of Vitamin Creative Space in
Guangzhou which, since its establishment in 2002, has come to be considered as
one of the most important platforms for contemporary art in China.
For Hong Kong Conversations Ng and Zhang will discuss and consider the different
platforms that currently exist for exhibiting contemporary art in China. What does
it mean to be independent? Is there such a thing as a non-profit? Are conditions
in China opening up “unconventional” ways for the independent exhibition of
contemporary art? Are conditions in the Pearl River Delta with cities like Hong Kong,
Shenzhen and Guangzhou, creating a very different environment to say, the capital,
Beijing?
Shifting Sites: Cultural Desire and the Museum
Saturday 17 May 2008, 10am - 5.30pm, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre
Presented by Asia Art Archive and Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The
Chinese University of Hong Kong. Supported by - Home Affairs Bureau, Government of
HKSAR and in association with ART HK 08.
Major resources are being allocated by governments to building cultural facilities – think
Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District. Today, art and cultural
facilities are seen as necessary components of a world-class city; a desire reiterated
throughout cities in Asia. Can the one-stop cultural district really emulate the vibrancy
of art scenes in cities like London and NY? And the idea of a museum – this is a recent
construct in Asia – so what should today’s museum look like? Eight internationally
renowned speakers will come to Hong Kong to address these issues.
In this one-day conference key individuals and institutions address these very issues
and share with us their insights and experiences.
Confirmed speakers include:
Jane DeBevoise: Chair of the Board of Directors of the Asia Art Archive and Former
Deputy Director of Guggenheim Museum
Phillip Dodd: Chairman of Made in China, London/Beijing
David Elliott: Independent Curator and Critic (Founding Director of the Mori Art
Museum)
Yuko Hasegawa: Chief Curator of Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo
Oscar Ho: Program Director of Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The
Chinese University of Hong Kong
Charles Merewether: Curator and Artistic Director of 2006 Sydney Biennale
From its online inception to its current presence
on both coasts of the United States and in
Europe, Aicon Gallery has helped establish Indian
contemporary art firmly amidst progressive art from
all over the world. Aicon began as the first online
gallery of Indian art based in the United States.
The New York space opened in 2002, followed by
Palo Alto (2004) and London (2007). Through all
this growth, the fundamental principle that forms
Aicon’s bulwark remains the same – building bridges
through art. Aicon Gallery has also widened its focus
and embarked into the world of contemporary art
from Pakistan.
Contrasts Gallery, founded in Hong Kong in 1992,
does not follow the established model of Western art
galleries; rather, it has evolved from the philosophy
of Chinese Literati art, which does not segregate
or hierarchise art forms. The gallery exhibits
multi-discipline artists and promotes cross-cultural
exchange by inviting artists to create works that
address contemporary China.
Contrasts’ programme encourages a re-evaluation
of contemporary Chinese art by featuring works that
synthesise Chinese sensibilities with an international
visual language. Artists reinterpret Chinese traditions
by fusing them with Western influences to express
their feelings about the dynamic changes in China
today.
international group of young, emerging artists. At
from Europe, the Middle East and Asia (Austria,
China, Korea, Morocco). Many of them highlight
issues of censorship, the influence of globalization
on their respective cultures and the resulting
displacement. Most of these artists deal with notions
of hybrid identities and cultural tension. They have
an ongoing dialogue between the East and the
West, the old and the new, the ancestral and the
contemporary. Their works often reflect a certain
displacement experienced due to the influence of
Western culture on the East.
Gallery IHN has developed a reputation in
organizing ambitious and innovative exhibitions of
leading artists. The gallery moved to its present
premises in the Sagan area, near Kyung-Bok
Palace and the Blue House in August 1998. With
its characteristic space including 2 showrooms,
the gallery acts as a consultant to major museums
and public art institutions and as a precursor to
Korean contemporary art. Since its inception in
1989, Gallery IHN has held exhibitions specialising
in contemporary Korean art including painting,
sculpture, photography, mixed media and
installations. The gallery currently represents the
leading contemporary artists in Korea who are
selected solely on the basis of their aesthetic quality
and intellectual appeal. To fulfill its role as the
leading fine arts gallery, Gallery IHN continues to not
only host exhibitions of leading contemporary artists
but also introduce young and rising artists.
Founded in 1998, Ingleby Gallery maintains an
ambitious programme of exhibitions and off-site
projects by established and emerging contemporary
artists. In the past 10 years, we have secured a
reputation as one of Scotland’s leading private
galleries, renowned for the quality of our exhibitions
and publications. Our programme maintains a strong
curatorial focus, often presenting a contextual and
cross-generational view of contemporary art practice.
We represent established artists of international
standing, alongside some of the most important
Scottish figures of recent generations, whilst working
hard to introduce and support younger, emerging
artists. In August 2008 we will move from our existing
gallery to a new 6000 sq ft space in Edinburgh’s city
centre.

gbk presents an eclectic stable of artists and diverse
exhibition programme, focused by Barry Keldoulis’
preference for work that combines intellectual rigor,
ideas and aesthetics.
Informed by his work in Australian museums and
galleries after fifteen years in New York and Europe,
Barry Keldoulis opened gbk in May 2003. From his
former boss and mentor Henry Geldzahler (the first
Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New
York, and seminal Pop Art protagonist) Keldoulis
has adopted as his maxim “art is what artists make,
and this is what they are making now”. This has led
Keldoulis, for whom contemporary art is a marriage
of ideas and aesthetics, to work closely with artists,
encouraging their ambitious projects and promoting
them around the globe.
Galerie Levy was founded in 1970 by Hamburg
resident Thomas Levy (b. 1947). With its multifaceted
program, based not least on the pillars of Surrealism
and Pop Art, Galerie Levy has earned a first rate
reputation among German and European galleries
through the past decades. Galerie Levy is the
exclusive representative, as primary gallery, of artists
Allen Jones, Marc Lüders, C.O. Paeffgen, Mel Ramos,
and Daniel Spoerri, among others. It also represents
the estate of Meret Oppenheim, in close coordination
with that artist’s family.
Since September of 2004 the gallery has been
located on the outskirts of Eppendorf in a loft-like
space that offers fantastic possibilities for the
presentation of art. The interior of the gallery is
no less impressive than the enchanted exterior
areas with their sculpture garden. The artworks
on display have all the space they need within the
gallery’s two expansive exhibition rooms. Since the
implementation of LEVY 1st VIEW in 2004 the gallery
has also become more involved in the mediation and
development of emerging contemporary artists.
Galerie Eric Mircher has been open for three years
and is now well-known for exhibiting work by midcareer
European painters such as Martin Kasper
and Sylvie Fajfrowska. However, they also offer an
opportunity to non-European artists such as Michael
McMillen and Steve Galloway from California and
Max Streicher from Canada to show their art to
the French public. Many of the artists represented
have their work displayed in private and institutional
collections and participate in national and
international, solo and group exhibitions. The gallery
has participated in the main European art fairs and
is very happy to bring their exhibition for the first
time to the Chinese art market.

Wallace with a mission to provide a professional
gallery for young Chinese artists. This was undertaken
at a time when there were no other galleries and
contemporary Chinese art was virtually unknown. The
gallery has expanded its mission and now undertakes
international exchanges and operates an artist in
interest not only in the art and culture of the past but
also in the vibrant and innovative art being produced
by Asian artists today. Rossi + Rossi bring to their
principle and aesthetic they have applied in the last
25 years in showcasing rare and exceptional antique
pieces. Rossi + Rossi’s contemporary Asian art
exhibitions have been met both with critical acclaim
and a positive audience response. Alongside these
exhibitions they have staged forums and various
Michael Schultz Galleries represent German and
international painters and sculptors. Besides
representing works from classical modernism, the
gallery programme strives to support contemporary
art and emerging artists.
For the past five years Michael Schultz has been
working intensively with the Korean art market.
Numerous collaborations have resulted not only in
showing German artists in Korea, but also opening
up the European market for young Korean artists.
This eventually led to the opening of Michael Schultz
Gallery Seoul in 2006.
In 2007 Michael Schultz Gallery Beijing opened. We
consider both our locations in Seoul and Beijing as a
contribution to the Asian art scene in general, but far
more as a supporter of cultural exchange between
continents.
Seomi & Tuus Gallery distinguishes itself from others
in its philosophy that stems from the substantial
experience of the Seomi Gallery in its work in
the contemporary art field over the past twenty
years. Since its opening, Seomi & Tuus Gallery has
maintained the mission to introduce international
artists to the Korean public. Whilst showcasing the
works of the most well known artists such as Andy
Warhol, Cy Twombly, Tom Wesselman, Donald Judd,
Lucio Fontana, etc, in the Small is Beautiful Exhibition
(July 2007) and the Damien Hirst Exhibition (October
2007), Seomi & Tuus Gallery seeks to introduce
young and exceptionally talented artists from home
and abroad, such as the works of Simon Patterson.
Transcending the expected, Seomi & Tuus Gallery as
a public gallery dedicates itself to not only introducing
current trends, but also in foreseeing and bringing
future trends in contemporary fine arts to the Korean
public.
Mizuma Art Gallery opened in 1994. Since then we
have been focusing on introducing Japanese and
Asian artists, whose work has qualities unique to
the current 'style', to the international art scene and
many of whom are now internationally recognised.
We started organizing exhibitions of Western artists
who are new to Japanese audiences in recent years.
Since the year 2000, Mizuma Art Gallery has been
constantly participating in international art fairs such
as ARCO (Madrid), Armory Show (New York), Frieze
(London), FIAC (Paris), and Basel Miami (Miami).
New space “Mizuma Action” was set up in the
same building in 2005 in order for more artists to
have an opportunity to show their works. We hope
to contribute to the further development of the
Japanese contemporary art scene.

Über represents artists who have been instrumental
in the artistic developments of the past two decades
and who contribute to contemporary art discourse.
In keeping with our policy of “art unlimited”, Über
Gallery supports artists in three distinct streams:
‘Über’ (established Australian artists), ‘Über
Young’ (emerging cutting-edge artists), and ‘Über
International’ (artists from Asia, USA and Europe).
Über has an extensive collection of original artworks
by exclusively represented artists working in a wide
variety of media including works on paper, painting,
collage, sculpture, photography, installation and new
media.
UNION Gallery was founded in September 2003.
The gallery has been committed to presenting
younger artistic positions without a prevailing
direction of only one artistic medium. For many of
the artists that UNION presents, the gallery has been
instrumental in a large number of public exhibitions,
which have followed their Union debut. For some
years the gallery has developed a strong relationship
with Asian artists, curators, writers and collectors.
The gallery operates across two premises. The main
office is in Central London near Tate Modern. The
second gallery was opened September 2006 in East
London, also established by Jari Lager.
Vadehra Art Gallery has been promoting
contemporary Indian art through exhibitions,
retrospectives and publications since 1987. Over the
past twenty years VAG has been the locus through
which many artists’ works have reached the public.
In a country like India which does not have a vibrant
art museum culture, galleries like ours double-up
as vital sites of production and dissemination of
contemporary art.
We have produced a significant body of scholarship
on Indian art with our art publications since 1996.
The gallery has also collaborated with diverse
institutions – from Indian public museums to
organise retrospectives of senior artists, to working
with international museums on India shows
(Kunstmuseum Bern, Singapore Art Museum).

Van Horn was originally founded as an artist space
by the German artist Daniela Steinfeld. It started
its exhibition programme with an exhibition of the
underground-cartoonist Robert Crumb. The space
developed into a gallery at the beginning of 2006.
The gallery mixes exhibitions of particular historical
meaning (Crumb, Steiner, Russ Meyer, Cady Noland,
WOLS etc) with international contemporary positions,
having a special interest in working with a new
generation of Düsseldorf based artists.
A new contemporary gallery called Wada Fine Arts
(President: Yumie Wada) was launched in March,
2007 in Tsukiji, Tokyo, to promote emerging Japanese
and Asian artists.
Wada Fine Arts would like to push forward in the
midst of the contemporary art era utilizing the
experience generated by Gallery Iseyoshi (1990-2006
in Ginza, Tokyo), the predecessor of Wada Fine Arts,
which participated in ten international art fairs such
as CIGE (Beijing), ARCO (Madrid), Scope (N.Y.),
KIAF (Seoul), Art fair (Koln), MiArt (Milano) etc.,
and its many relationships with galleries and artists
throughout the world.
