Surviving Spouse Assistance ProgramA SMART National ProgramOften unheralded but of vital importance in the time of need isthe Surviving Spouse Assistance Program (SSAP). Until we haveto wade through the myriad of forms, regulations and requirementsthat surround us when the passing of a loved one occurs, many of us don’t give surviving spouse matters a lot of consideration. But successfully navigating the complexity of Military payand benefits, Social Security, Veterans Administration entitlementsand other programs is critical in those days immediatelyfollowing the loss of a spouse. SSAP comes to the rescue. SSAPis now a SMART National Program and the Coordinator, a NationalAppointed Position that advises the Board of Directors onmatters pertaining to surviving spouse assistance. Christian Eck,the SSAP Coordinator and his team have new and updatedchecklists and information ready to assist surviving spouses. Ifyou get a chance, attend one of the seminars they present atNational and Regional Musters. You’ll appreciate the wealth ofinformation they have to share. The members of the SSAP teamare:Coordinator :Christian Eck smart10236@smail.comAssistant : May Jones ajmjaj@aol.comSE Region :Dusty & Margie Rhodes w8lje@arrl.netSWRegion : Nancy Closs-Flesher clossflesher@juno.comNat’l Chaplain : Larry Shields shields1352@gmail.comPlease contact them immediately, should the needarise. However, you’ll notice that not all regions have representativeson the team, which can really affect immediate response. If you feel would like to serve your region and SMARTon the team, please contact Christian. Experienceis not crucial as the team can provide youthe training and information you need. A willingnessto serve and provide an importantbenefit is what is important. Help SSAP helpyou.Chuck Kuzma President, SMARTNote from the First VPChapter Leadership is very important to all ofus in SMART. Your Nat'l Leaders are asking(begging) you to get involved in your Chapters. Some may think it is too hard and toomuch responsibility. It is not near as hard asit appears from the outside. Host a Muster, help someonewho is hosting a Muster, become a Chapter Officer, It willbe fun. SMART needs your involvement. You can make adifference. You have expertise that we know nothingabout. Be part of the solution to SMART's woes/tribulations. Those of you who are Chapter Leaders, please consider bringing your talents to Regional/National.Help us restore SMART to it's former glory. In addition toRecruiting a new member to SMART this year, also becomea leader. You will be surprised how easy it is tomake a difference, and you will have fun doing it.Dear SMART friends:I just returned from presenting the FAM-CAMP of the Year award to Ft Bliss, El Paso,TX. Mr. Young, the manager, and his staffwere very appreciative of the honor. Ifyou're passing by El Paso, stop in and stay anight or two--you'll see why they won theaward. You have the ability to participate inthe FAMCAMP improvement program along with the FAM-CAMP of the Year award by going on line to the SMART websiteFAMCAMP tab and filling out the survey. We want touse the power of our large organization to improve FAM-CAMPS with consolidated member visit survey reports.John Barry, President of the New Mexico Amigos Chapter, accompanied me to the presentation. We had a positivediscussion with the FAMCAMP folks about the chapter helpingthe FAMCAMP with projects such as clean-ups. I wouldencourage all chapters to try to affiliate with area FAM-CAMPS (if possible) to both be associated with military RVers(possible recruits) and create worthwhile service projects forthe chapter. Now for membership issues. There was a greatsurge in recruiting after the National Muster--thank you foryour great efforts. However, we have not sustained thesurge, and I am asking each of you to continue your effortsto talk to other RVing veterans about SMART--share yourpositive experiences and great military camaraderie opportunitiesin musters and caravans--and help us achieve abetter membership level. We are working on articles forsome of the major veteran and RVing organization magazines, but we need your help as members of these organizationsto provide your personal experiences into these articles--please contact me if you are interested in helping us withthe articles. I note that our 2013 caravans are starting to fillup--a few are full but with standby lists that some will stillget to go. We have a great slate of caravans this year. I encourageyou to look for your "bucket list" caravan and signup soon. We will also need to start thinking about 2014 caravans--pleasecontact our National Travel Coordinator, JohnFarrell, if you are interested in leading a caravan in 2014.Finally, I hope that you all are having a great new year. Ibelieve that SMART has a great leadership team and an energizedorganization that will take us to the increased membershiplevels we need this next year. I am looking forwardto seeing many of you this year as we travel this great countrywe defend. Craig Christen SMART 2nd VPEach of us have been leaders at some level in MilitaryLife/outside Organizations or Communities at somepoint throughout our lives. Thanks for all your help. Seeyou at a Chapter/Regional or National Muster.Larry Sockwell

YOU MISSED IT! The 2012 National Muster put on by theNorth Central Region was one grand muster that should go down in history as oneof the best. There were a couple of complaints, but nothing that was not correctedimmediately. There are many key people who have a huge task in making sure thatthe program runs smoothly. The Muster Master, Mike Kegley. Mike did anoutstanding job in assigning the right people for the job to be performed. Asmost of us know, the people who do the job make their leaders look good, and knowing your people is the secret. Mike was continually on the jobchecking for problems. Registration went like “clockwork”. Thanks to JoyBeard. Scheduling, programming and communicating with the various Chairpersons, and making up the program booklet was a very big job. The information received was well written and informative. Signs, informationboards two schedules in each bag and etc, both held seminars. This is not an easy task. These tasks were performed byMarlene & Glenn Thomas. EXCELLENT JOB!!! All the facilities that were used was handled by one lady, and she did anoutstanding job in making sure that everything was in line and in the right “spot”. If someone had a problem with their “spot”, shewas always available to change or assist in correcting the problem. She also helped otherChairpersons with their assignments. I cannot in all good conscience not let you knowthat it was Karen Dietrich. BIG KUDU’S TO HER!!!! The parking went well, a fewvery late arrivals, but the parking Chairman was on the job and it went well. Most allwere satisfied with their sites. We had more handicap people than sites allotted by thefair grounds, but the parking crew did their best. Trams were available, but usage wasvery low. Most wanted to walk for the exercise. Our thanks to all the PARKINGCREW and the TRACTOR DRIVERS. The food Chairperson for this job picked a goodCaterer. Tasty, varied and on time. A couple of people lost their “food” pins, but thatdid not effect the operation at the food line. Speaking of food, there was plenty of it, andit was very good. It was buffet service and you had a choice of foods. Kudu’s to thisChairman. The Ladies luncheon was a huge success. The guest speaker talked about the“Amish Way of Living”. Many very expensive door prizes were given out. The ladyChairperson and helpers did a super job. The table decorations were outstanding and in“tune” with the season. All other table decorations were made by a group of ladies andwere raffled off at the end of the Muster. Again, kudu’s to this group. The vendorswere many and varied. Our “faithful” Mr. Kenthe badge maker was on the job. R V’s were ondisplay and there are four very happy memberswho will be driving new rigs. This Chairmanworked hard in obtaining vendors and the correctplacement of each vendor. Again kudu’s . TheMaster of Ceremonies did a very commendable job in announcing the door prizes. Therewere many and most were good value. 50/50 raffle was very ”Rich”. The Chairperson did agood job in having the raffle tickets and gifts available for the Master of Ceremonies. Thewinners were very satisfied with their take. Entertainment was fair, and most enjoyed thedancing. Last but not least was the “bad ass” sheriff. He collected $5.50, this guy had no mercy on anyone. He also had golf cartsfor the staff and carts available for rental. 205 rigs were parked. 42 First National. 32 Handicap. The Smart Nomads had 22 rigs. The Great Lakes Chapter had 20 rigs. The Florida Buccaneers was 3 rd with 17 rigs and The Rocky Top Chapter was 4 th with 14rigs. The Alamo Smarts, and The Tri-State Panhandlers each had 10 rigs present. The rest of the Smart Chapters were under 10rigs.A “big” thank you to all the chairmen and volunteers that made the 2012 National Muster a huge success! Submitted by:Dale M. Hertzfeld North Central Regional Director Ps: An Antique Ice Cream scoop was missed placed. If you knowwhere it is please let me know.I want to personally apologize to the 2012 National Muster Staff. Due to an oversight we did not get the 2012 National MusterReport into the last Traveler. The National Muster Staff did an Outstanding job and they need to be commended for their efforts. Pleasemake sure you read the article Dale Herzfeld sent in above, enjoy the muster photos throughout the Traveler. Melissa Wade

2013 CARAVANSHope everyone had a joyous holiday season. With the holidaysbehind us, it’s time to start thinking about getting in the travelingmode again. We have 5 great caravans planned for this year,North to Alaska, Grand Frontier Western, Branson, Kentucky Experience, and last but not least Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Thereare still openings available for 4 of the 5 caravans mentioned below. If the caravan you want is full, we do have a standby list thatis used in the event that someone who has already signed up drops out. I knowall of the wagon masters are working hard to make their caravan “an event to beremembered.” If your bucket list contains any of the planned caravan destinations, think about participating in that caravan, as this is a fantastic way to removeit from your list. For the most current information about caravan information, check the caravan listing on the SMART website. In closing, I’d like tothank all of you who have said a prayer for us in the last two months. On the10 th of October I was diagnosed with lung cancer and it has been a whirlwindsince, with trips to various doctors, surgery the last part of November and Chemotherapystarts in January. So far all of the doctors are pleased with the progress.Again, thank you all for your cards and prayers. Albuquerque was Aloft as we approached the Balloon Fiesta Grounds on themorning of Oct 5. Many pilots had launched from local schools bringing the joy of ballooning to the childrenas we enjoyed the Land of Enchantment. Later that day, we gathered wearing red to Support Our Troops atKirtland AFB’s golf course clubhouse for a hot turkey and dressing Welcome dinner. Everyone introducedthemselves and received their embroidered caravan bag with jackets, agenda books, Blaze A Trail programbook, balloon fiesta pins, a 2013 balloon calendar and caravan hangers. To celebrate our 47 th state’s Centennialeveryone enjoyed the balloon decorated Happy 100 th Birthday New Mexico/Welcome SMART cake. Waltand Patsy won the “Who” was the early bird “Owl” bowl set. First timers were recognized. Oldest memberSteve and June and Newest members Jim and Linda were recognized. Camping right on the Balloon FiestaGrounds provided the opportunity to come back ‘n forth anytime to the launch field by school buses. Whileothers were able to sit right in our group area or right in their own RV’s watching the balloons float overheadand at night watch the fireworks. Our mesmerizing experience included watching Dawn Patrols, Mass Ascensions,Balloon Glows, Glowdeos, Flight of the Nations Ascension, Flying Competitions and Special ShapesRodeo. Our AIBF experience went beyond our greatest expectations. The weather was almost perfect andthe blue skies made the kaleidoscope of balloon colors, shapes, and sizes from around the world speculator. Thanks to Doug’s early morning coffee and goodies many SMART members had the energy to become partof a Chase Crew and helped pilots inflate, launch, and land balloons. Our Bee Happy Day found Roger andBonnie taking the first hot air balloon ride in the group in a Bee! Charlie and Dianne, Bruno, Pam Perrin, EdBarre, Al and Nancy also had the ultimate experience of flying in a balloon while several other Chase Crewmembers appreciated the experience with SMART friends and enjoyed hot chocolate and Frito Pie for breakfast!Enjoying the Hot Air Capital of the World was filled with many activities. We toured the ABQ Museum &Old Town. Several of us met the “Code Talkers” at their book signing. The Navajo language was used as asuccessful secret code during WWII, in the South Pacific. The Japanese cryptographers couldn’t break theircode making them responsible for many victories during the war. Getting up early to have a breakfast burritoat the Chasers Club was disappointing. We were so cold and no Launch! Later that day, we ate lunch atSandiago’s Mexican Grill. Then we rode the Sandia Peak tram which is the longest aerial tram in N Americawith a group photo at the top. Many went on to travel, The Turquoise Trail to Madrid or stopped at TinkertownMuseum to enjoy one man’s life as a carver. The “Mad Hatter’s” showed up wearing their decorated hats atour social and Jackie won the group vote with Pam Perrin coming in 2 nd and Chuck Beres coming in 3 rd . Itwas a lot of fun for everyone. Next, we enjoyed the Indian dancers at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. It’sthe Gateway to the nineteen Pueblos in NM. Our Christmas in NM lunch buffet with red and green Chile peppersat El Pinto Mexican Restaurant was delicious. Many watched as fresh peppers were being roasted. Weexchanged gifts at the social and enjoyed NM’s state cookie Bizcochitos. Getting Our Kicks on Route 66 daywe carpooled to Acoma Pueblo Sky City considered being the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in NAmerica. Our guide atop the 367’ sandstone mesa shared his knowledge of his ancestors and the AcomaPueblo. We all enjoyed our journey through time and the artistic art work and pottery of the people who live inthe Pueblo, attend San Esteban del Ray Mission, and who will be buried in the one of the four layers of internmentat the cemetery. Several tasted the freshly baked goodies; fry bread, fruit pies and tamales. The All-U-Can-Eat buffet at Sky City Casino provided many SMART members an opportunity to try their luck at theslots after lunch. We kept looking up at all the balloons knowing God was looking down as pigs flew byalong with panda bears, an elephant, Darth Vader, Hopper T Frog, Spyderpig, Humpty Dumpty, Felix the Cat,Smokey the Bear, Elvis, and many more interesting balloons. The Balloon Museum was informative on thehistory of ballooning. The National Museum of Nuclear Science &History was fascinating and terrifying. Wesaw replicas of Little Boy and Fat Man the atomic bombs that ended WWII. Our group snacks provided everyonewith an opportunity to share our enthusiasm for the balloons and daily activities. Before we knew it, itwas Friday again and we wore our red shirts as we enjoyed sausage, gravy and biscuits at breakfast madeby Tom Wentz. We celebrated a Military appreciation luncheon at Elephant Bar and Grill. The POW/MIAballoon was among our favorites. Collecting balloon cards from pilots was part of the fun of our caravan.Everyone wondered which card would be selected as the “Secret” card for a drawing for a $20 Pizza Hut gift

card. Everyone with the Bee card had a chance and Everett won. “Up,Up, and Away” once more the balloons delighted us on the FarewellMass Ascension as we departed for 3 nights in Santa Fe in time toboard the Santa Fe Southern Railways to Galisteo Basin. We touredNM’s “Roundhouse.” It’s the oldest and only round capital in US. It’s inthe shape of the Zia. This ancient symbol of the sun is also found onthe state flag and on license plates. The quantity and quality of the artwork in the capital was amazing. Then we enjoyed the NM History Museumand The Palace of Governors which is the oldest public buildingin US. The Bataan Memorial Museum provided us with an insight toone of the greatest atrocities of WWII-“The Bataan Death March.”There were more New Mexican POWs of the Japanese “per capita”than any other state. The Loretto Chapel was inspirational with its“miraculous staircase” built by a carpenter who appeared on his donkeywith only a carpenter’s square, a hammer and tubs in which tosoak the wood. It’s made of 33 steps with two full 360 degree turnswith wood found nowhere else in the world using only wooden pegs,no nails or screws. He disappeared as mysteriously as he appearedwithout being paid. Our steak Potluck provided everyone with a hardymeal. The chicken and pizza party with Nancy O’Bryan’s fruit salad was a funway to end our special time together. We said our goodbyes over donuts andcoffee the next morning. Doug and I want to thank everyone for making theAIBF and Santa Fe Caravan a Success. U Did It!REGION & CHAPTER NEWSNM Amigos Oct-2012 MusterThe New Mexico Amigos enjoyed thepleasant fall weather at the Bird WatchersRV Park (near San Antonio, NM)Oct 30 - Nov 2. After getting all the rigsset up, most of the group went into townfor an early dinner. Our hosts Terry andAngel Ortiz provided yummy snacks forour "Happy Hour" just before sunsetwhich gave us a chance to visit and get acquainted with guests. Memberspresent, in addition to our hosts were: Cathy and Ed Osborn; John and LoriBarry; Craig and Terilu Christen; and guests Glenn and Doris Moore (whoare new members now). The next day the group went to the Bosque delApache National Wildlife Refuge where migratory birds and endangered speciesare protected. We saw hundreds of geese, ducks and sandhill cranes.During winter months, cranes, bald eagles and snow geese are abundant.Spring brings warblers, flycatchers and shorebirds. The Visitors Center is atreasure trove of information and also provides a "shopping opportunity" forthe ladies. The Very Large Array of 27 giant dish antennas was another interestingdestination of our group. The National Radio Astronomy Observatoryoperates the VLA and turns naturally-emitted radio waves coming from astronomicalobjects into images that help scientists understand the workingsof stars, planets, galaxies, black holes, pulsars, etc. It's worth the trip and aspecial Open House is held twice yearly to coincide with the Trinity Site atWhite Sands Missile Range. Fort Craig, established in 1854 was built to protecttravel routes and settlements from Indian attacks, but the Civil War Battleof Valverde in 1862 really made the Fort (Con’t) famous. It's an interestingstory and we enjoyed the tour. A trip to that region of the world isn'tcomplete without a world-class green chile cheeseburger at the Owl Bar &Cafe in San Antonio, so that's where we had lunch and all agreed that it de-S*M*A*R*T DISCOUNTS(continued)THE WILD FRONTIERCAMPGROUNDOcala, FL352-629-3540www.wildfrontiercampground. comRAMBLERS REST RV RESORTVenice, FL 941-493-4354www.rvonthego.comRUTLANDER OUTPOST RV PARKLouisburg, KS913-377-2722www.rutlanderoutpost.comCAVE COUNTRY CAMPGROUNDCave City, KY270-773-4678www.cavecountryrv.comLAKESIDE RV PARKLivingston, LA225-686-7676www.lakeside-rvpark.comMAXIE”SCAMPGROUNDBroussard, LA337-837-6200www.maxiescampground.comPECULIAR PARK PLACE RV PARKPECULIAR, MO816-779-6300www.peculiarparkplacervpark.comNWS EARLE RV PARKColts Neck, NJ732-866-2448muriel.smith@navy.milWEST GRAND RV PARKClovis, NM575-762-9240www.westgrandrv.com

This provided an opportunity fornonmember RVers in the park to participate and get informationabout S.M.A.R.T. Second, a large auction was held. Richard Mishlerfunctioned in the role of auctioneer. Members contributed items thatwould be desirable to those whom needed them. The event netted ourchapter $347.00. South Florida Gold Coasters October MusterAnother great muster was held in Port St Lucie, Florida where we visited the National UDT and Navy SEALmuseum http://www.navysealmuseum.com A very knowledgeable docent provided historical informationabout the early days of the SEALS during WW II and an overview of the exhibits. We then toured the museumand saw an amazing display of weapons, special SEAL equipment, and information on some of their“unclassified” operations. On display is the actual 10,000 pound, fiberglass lifeboat that was the epicenterof a hijacking by Somalian pirates on Easter Sunday April 2009. Three of the pirates held the Maersk Alabama’scaptain, Richard Phillips, hostage for four days on this lifeboat before U.S. Navy SEALs shot themdead, freeing the captain. We also took a narrated historical and ecological river cruise on the North Fork ofthe St. Lucie River http://www.stlucierivercruise.com Besides these activities, we still had time for the normalmuster fun things including bean bag baseball, cards, too much food, and the fun of seeing old friendsand making new ones! Check out our future musters and join us for a great time! John Steinbauer, PresidentTRI-STATE PANHANDLERSThe Tri-State Panhandler Joined with the White Sands Chapterfor a joint muster in October. SMART Cajuns This year for the first time, the Cajuns decided to muster after the Thanksgiving holidays and had somuch fun; they are considering doing this again. Charles and Dianne LeBlanc, hosts of this muster, greeted about 28 rigs at LakeviewRV in Livingston, LA and provided bountiful meals, games, opportunities for socializing, nice door prizes and a great projectfor donations of our 50/50 raffle and silent auctions. The weather did not want to cooperate, so the Cajuns played their bean bagtoss tournament inside the club house, and it did not stop them from having fun. The turkey cooking in the fryers and the cooking ofthe seafood gumbo was still managed by Charles LeBlanc and Lee Fontenot underneath the club house pavilion. As usual the Cajunsdid not go hungry. Our first night of the muster had guests Tommy Jarreau, Commander of the Purple Heart Order, MikeMcNaughton, Outreach Director of the Louisiana Veteran Affairs, and Larry Hess, one of the organizers of Support Our War Heroes. The Cajuns, once hearing Larry speak about the efforts to help our veterans in the Louisiana and Mississippi area, voted atthe business meeting to donate $685 to this organization. This was a combination of the 50/50 raffle, silent auctions, and personaldonations. The Cajuns also voted to send $100 to SMART HQ to help balance the budget and while in a generous mood, the memberspassed a hat around to collect donations for the two staff members to receive Christmas gift cards. The January, 2012 musterwill again be in San Marcos, TX at the Canyon Trails RV Resort with many of the Cajuns traveling down into the Valley where theywill stay at the VIP La Feria West RV Park for about two weeks. This is a no-host muster and those Cajuns who are members ingood standing will not have to pay a muster fee. It's COLD here inthe Arkansas Ozarks ( and should be).Anyhow now that a New Year eventsare now beginning it's time to reviewand update your two (2) SurvivingSpouse Assistance Program ( SSAP)documents and plans. With the gracious and expert help ofVicki Tripp, SMART SW Region member there have beenseveral items that have been revised / updated to betterassist you and all of us in these matters. Please view thedocuments on the SMART websitewww.smart@smartrving.org. ( menu selection 16 ; SurvivingSpouse Assistance) and initiate your planning processes.....mightbe a great New Year's resolution. If youneed any assistance or advice please contact myself orany of the SSAP Team. Additionally, we would encourageyou to call and make an appointment with your local County/ Parrish etc. Veteran's Services Officer (VSO) or theRetired Activities Office (RAO) at a nearby military installationto include Guard and Reserve installations. Theymay review the document needs and assist you in recoveryof any missing items. They will also become a friendlyand caring "friend" in time of need. So make plans to visiteither the VSO or RAO as soon as possible. Follow this upwith visits to your local Social Security Administration( SSA) office. It's also a "timely" matter to check the statusof your ID Cards, DEERS status and eRAS and myPAYaccounts. Again check with your VSO of RAO for assistancein those matters. If you do not know what the termsDEERS, eRAS and myPay Accounts refer to it's "HighTime" for you and family members to become familiar withall aspects of each item.. This good advice for all. All theSSAP team and SMART leadership wish you the Best in2013 and beyond, Christian Eck SSAP team member andcoordinator.

R & R Committee Chair -Sherwin StielowThe National has came and went. Had agreat time with all of our old friends and 44new first timers friends we met. Dorothyand I left the National for a 2 day stop atSedalia, Mo. to do our part helping withthe 2013 National. There were a fewproblems that came to our attention from the National, OurNational BOD and staff did a great job of working throughthese items. Most important to everyone is not let thingslike this occur in the future.E-mail letter of Congratulations was sent to Al Haynes#12358 for his 2012 RECRUITER OF THE YEAR AWARD.I see that Al has now recruited 8 more new members fromhis Good Sam Samboree event. More will be said aboutthis in follow up. While at the National I was contacted by amember of SE Region about the possibility of forming anew Chapter at or around THE VILLAGES. Hq. was contactedand received their records of SMART membership inthat area. Letter was sent to this interested person with CCto BOD and the SE Regional Director for follow up. I am ofthe opinion that this will be taken care by SE Director. While at the National, a visit was made at all of theVendor booths. Observed that none of the Venders hadany SMART applications on display. Even though severalwere SMART members. Suggested to all vendors thatwould be would appreciate if they would have an SMARTapplication display at all future events that they were at.SMART or otherwise. One of the vendors was a memberof a Nationwide African American RV club. Two email contactswere made to their National Hq., another contact wasmade via. public service to their Regional type director forcentral US. Attempt was made to have this club considerforwarding to their veteran membership information aboutSMART. As of this date nothing has occurred from thiscontact. This has been placed in my inactive file for thistime. If anyone knows of any African American Veteranswho belong to this org., please make an attempt to pass oninformation about SMART.Received information from Christian Eck about a applicationgiven out that was effecting the Arkansas Diamonds. There were several emails sent by a number of ArkansasDiamonds about this application. They [CLOSED THEDEAL] on this application. Great recruiting by all. Mythanks to all for doing well. This is the type of recruiting andfollow that needs to be done by all Regions. More aboutthis later.New SMART Application was being put together by ourHq. staff. Input and suggestions was given by many tocome up with the best possible application. Several of mysuggestions were accepted on this new application. a. It isalso my suggestion that each SMART member could printapplications from the SMART www site. To save on printingat home you can bring the application up to print, thenkey in SHADES OF GRAY to print the application out.Save a lot on color ink. Many of our SMART membership belong to Good SamClubs. The August/September 2012 issue of their magazinehad several great articles from their CEO about MilitaryVeterans and how Good Sam International could help withVeterans. An article was produced with the help of almostall of our BOD and others to get a positive write up into anupcoming Good Sam Magazine. After hitting one brick wallafter another trying to find the correct person to guide ourSMART/GOOD SAM story to their publication. We foundthe POC. The article is into them. Now, we have to waitand see if it will be published. More will follow on this issue.Nov. 1st the Kansas Big First Tea Party hosted a Veteranappreciation day in Hays, Ks.. Dorothy and I set up aSMART Recruiting table [FREE- $75.00 charge waved forus]. We did not do much if any good at this event. Threeapplications were handed out to interested veterans. Hq.Staff brought to my attention if a Chapter closing. My inputwas given to 2nd VP Christen about this issue. This is aRegional issue, nothing can be done now about the problemthat may have lead to this Chapter closing. The onlything that National can do is through Retention efforts [thereare several] help all Regions with Retention questions andproblems. Please everyone do your part for retention. Addto the list things that each Region can do.DO NOT SWEEP ANY PROBLEM UNDER THE RUG.The following are some of the areas that I am working on atthis time. But first, "LET ME BE CLEAR ON ONE POINT",I will clear everything through the BOD and Hq. Staff beforeputting anything official out to membership. I am not anelected official, I serve at the pleasure of the National Presidentand BOD.[BAD FISHING DAYS]. The hope when FISHING isthat the big trophy will swim by and be attracted to thebait. Just a little side note on fishing. In my fishing boatthere are at least 10 fishing poles, and assume about 500different lures. Over $5.000.00 lures and fishing items,JUST TO ATTRACT THAT ONE BIG FISH.We know that many organizations are having problemswith membership. In fact it seems that the word MANYshould be changed to ALL. I am not a big reader. Look atmagazines of interest to me. Always look at the first fewpages where their CEO and Editors have items of interest. For the most part all of these items have to do with R & R.The American LEGION magazine. Their Commandernotes that there are an estimated 16 million eligible veterans, but the LEGION only has 2.4 million members. Theyhave set a goal of 3.3 million membership. Am starting towork on a program to get SMART articles into the LEGIONmag.. Have talked to HQ., been advised me that nothingwas being done in this area at this time. Hq. suggested thatwe could advertise for them and they for us as a www. spot.More to follow on this.VFW Magazine. Same as the Legion. Will be workingon this are of [free] advertising on the www. page. Am lookingat getting the VFW and LEGION to advertise in theTraveler. More to follow on this item.RV Dealership Possibility of forwarding to local RVdealership our E-News. What benefit would the dealer getfrom our E-News? Or would they just delete this-- as Junkmail? Have talked to a couple of RV Dealers here in Kansas.Being we are non-profit and military veterans, wheysuggested the possibility that they would put SMART ontheir www. page as a link. Talked to Hq. We can do thesame for them on the e-News page. With Hq. only able to

send out 50 emails at a click, group the dealer to Areas that would benefit them. Working on this as we speak. I am ofthe opinion that the ONE of the most important issues we need to address is communication between members, chapter, regions and National. We are not talking to each other about the GOOD THINGS that happen. We are quick topoint out something that has went wrong. But almost never communicate the things that are working in this area ofR&R.We as veterans, because of what we have done in the military are [Comfortable where we are in life, also withwhat we have done - and - We do not have to explain ourselves to others]. This is a lot like my Kansas HighwayPatrol family of 27 years. The KHP only hired those who were capable of standing on their own, thinking on their feetand looking after their charge [the Kansas citizens]. Way back then, it was the Kansas Farm Boy/Girl who receivedthe honor of serving. Also a military veteran received extra points in the hiring process. You got it correct! This type ofperson is very hard to supervise. Enough for now. Much to windy today to go FISHING. S*M*A*R*T Inc.600 University Office BlvdSuite 1APensacola Florida 325041-800-354-7681www.smartrving.orgSPECIAL PEOPLE"Together Again"The passing of AC Autrey SMART member #6278We were recently notified that one of our "Greats"....A.C. Autreypassed from this Life to a much better Home at about 5 a.m., November13th 2012. He will now be with Dollie and a host of familymembers, comrades, fellow SMART's and friends. A.C. Autrey willbe sorely missed but long remembered for many enjoyable times heprovided; also his great "dry" humor, jokes, "pranks" .plus that tremendousand mischievous smile. He is now with "The Love of hislife;" Dollie. Autrey. ....and what a reunion that is. AC had a twinbrother KC who was also an US ARMY veteran. AC married DollieBrown also a twin in 1952 . They were married for 59 years at the time ofher passing in September 2011. "AC and Dollie loved one another deeplyand enjoyed traveling and camping with fellow SMART military retirees" states their children. . We know of no better 50/50promoter and "scrounger" of door prizes, raffle items or fundraisers for SMART muster events than AC. He was trulya very innovative, "persuasive" individual ; known as a man of great generosity. AC's loyalty to SMART and our membershipwas unquestioned . He contributed greatly to many enjoyable (and profitable) SMART musters and events. Asa Father he was loved and respected. One son, Mark Autrey, spoke of his father ( better known as "Pop" to his family)at the Memorial Service on November 17th. said " As fathers go, children say they have the best one.....My fatherwas truly the best " Pop", He was a man of his word! His words were straightforward! He spoke what wason this mind! "Pop" was truly a kind and generous man. All of you that knew him, know that. His last act ofkindness, that I can remember, was always giving a ride to a disabled man that lives in his neighborhood." ACleft the same impression on those who knew that he was truly "the Best" as a friend, comrade and "brother" to all.By.Mark Autrey's permission; anyone wishing to send memorial funds to SMART headquarters is invited to do so. Yourgenerosity and gesture would be greatly appreciated Respectfully and gratefully submitted, Christian Eck A Friend and"brother"
