HOW SMART HELPS
18 YEARS WITH SMART
MARRIAGE...MADE IN ALASKA!
29TH ANNUAL NATIONAL MUSTER IN GOSHEN, INDIANA

NATIONAL MUSTER 2012
As time marches on, plans for the 2012 National Muster in Goshen,
Indiana from 10 -15 September are progressing nicely. The committee
is working to ensure that everyone has a great time. We anticipate
many vendors will be there for you to shop your hearts out. As of this
writing, we have over 60 members that have already signed up for the
muster. Don’t wait. Please get your registration in early so that we can
make our plans plan for a successful muster.
We have Polo shirts that you can order. There is an ad in this issue
of the Traveler and also on the S*M*A*R*T web page. We will have
all the shirts that are ordered for you to pick up at the muster. There
will be limited quantities and sizes available at the muster. So, I would
suggest that if you to want a Polo shirt, you order early.
I have fielded several phone calls asking if they will have full hook-ups.
Everyone will have full hook-ups with either 30 or 50 amp service.
If anyone should have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
My e-mail is: kegley@chartermi.net and my phone numbers are: (989)
686-3125 (h) and (c) (810) 964-4113. See you all somewhere down
the road.
YOUR VOTE COUNTS
Let your voice be heard through your vote. In this issue of the
Traveler as in the previous issue (and in subsequent issues)
is a ballot to allow the Spouses of all members to become
Associate Members and thereby permitting all spouses to
participate in SMART equally.
The voting was originally going to be closed out in March
2012 and the votes counted. Even though this is permitted
by the SMART Bylaws, it was felt that an out-of-cycle vote
may not receive that participation that the regularly scheduled
election vote receives. Factors such as the Christmas
Holiday season, Snow-birds returning home and other spring
activities could result in the ballot being overlooked. Therefore,
the decision was made to extend the vote on this issue
until the National Muster in September 2012.
As a result, the ballot will appear in the next three issues of
the Traveler. Later in the year, the ballot for 2nd Vice-President
will also be printed. Be sure to make your vote count.
CREATIVE COACH
Creative Coach originally opened as a Collision Repair and Design
Center in 1997. Since then we have evolved into a full service
repair, maintenance, technical, mechanical and renovation center.
We operate from our “State-of-the Art” 16,000 square foot facilities
located in Lakeland, FL. We have earned a reputation for quality
craftsmanship and superior attention to detail.
With the high cost of RVs these days, most owners tend to keep
their coaches longer than in the past. Creative Coach offers
design ideas and installation services to keep coaches looking
and running better and longer. The first step of course is for the
owners to maintain their coaches in accordance with their owner
manuals. When the owners want an upgrade or something new, we
can offer many solutions, including new flooring, new electronics,
new cabinetry, and new window treatments just to name a few. We
also provide many upgrades for the outside of customer coaches
including the addition of outside chair lifts.
We appreciate this opportunity to let SMART members know
about Creative Coach and we appreciate the sacrifices made by
our men and women in uniform. During the months of July, August
and September we offer a discount on some services.
To arrange for an appointment or if you have any questions, you
can reach Keith or Lester at 863-984-3439
On The Cover
FROM THE PRESIDENT
I am pleased to announce that we have
a National Historian. Her name is Sarah
Colt, an associate member and comes
to us from the S.E .Region. With her
high level of drive and energy coupled
with her positive attitude she will be
a welcomed addition to this position.
National Historian duties/responsibilities
are outlined in SR 07-13.
Additionally we have a volunteer to
assist in soliciting advertisements from David Weis
vendors while promoting SMART. Her
name is Maria Tesmer also an associate member from the S.E
Region. Maria is an interesting and convincing conversationalist
who will represent SMART admirably. She will work closely with
the Membership & Publicity Committee and National Webmaster.
Both of these individuals have volunteered their time and efforts to
help SMART and I thank them and wish them all the best.
In closing I wish you all good health, safe travels and hope to see
many of you at the National Muster in Goshen, Indiana.
SMART National President 2011 -2012
FROM THE FIRST VP
SMART HQ has a new home. The office
has moved into a new office and has
doubled their work space. The move was
done over the first weekend in February
and included painting the office, cleaning
the carpets and moving a mountain of
furniture and documents. Melissa and
Phyllis were joined in the painting and
move by Jim Pence, President of White
Sands, Tom Dillon, President of Tri-State
Panhandlers, and Chuck Kuzma. With
the increased space,
finding a document
should no longer be
the
insurmountable
task it has been. The
office address is the
same, the building is
the same, they have
just moved down the
hall. The work detail is
shown in the picture.
Stop by and visit
HQ and see the new
accommodations.
18 Years With SMART!
"Twenty years from now you will be
more disappointed by the things you
did not do than by the ones you did
do. So throw off the bowlines, sail
away from the safe harbor. Catch
the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream. Discover."
I have not been able to verify if this is
indeed a quote from Mark Twain or H. Jackson Brown. Regardless, I found
it to be the appropriate introduction for our members: Bill and Nancy Watts.
Their travels began not with a sail boat but with a Ray Frank Motorhome,
number 200 of the new Fiberglass Series to be exact. It was December
1962 just as Bill was on his way to his first tour in Vietnam. They joined
FMCA as Charter Family Members and were assigned the number F96.
Nancy and their five children lived in the motor home for a year in Western
Maryland near Hagerstown while Bill was in Vietnam. In December of
1963, Bill and Nancy relocated to Hawaii and shipped their motorhome.
The following year their 6th child was born. One of the things that Bill shared
with me at our first meeting was the fact that Nancy did not think she
could have children - they now have: 6 married children, 24 grandchildren,
and 18 great grandchildren. Nancy says that they count spouses and any
children they come with as family, and, in May 2011, they celebrated their
58th Wedding Anniversary!
Bill and Nancy continued their travels throughout Hawaii and the US and,
in 1976, after buying and shipping a Maxi-van type motor home, they
went to Germany. During the time that Bill was stationed in Heidelberg,
the Watts family traveled all over Europe in their Maxi-Van. In 1991, they
became members of the Third Order of the Franciscan and as such held
services at musters and rallies. Members would bring their pets to be
blessed, a new RVing tradition began.
In 1994, Bill and Nancy joined S*M*A*R*T; they were given the number
1242. They joined the Florida Sunshine Chapter and have been members
since. Bill is the Chaplain for the Sunshine Chapter and performs that
capacity in other clubs and organizations. Their first Muster was in Myrtle
Beach, SC. In '95, they went on The Three River Cruise. In '96, it was the
National Muster in Lebanon, TN. In '97, they attended the National Muster
in Peoria, AZ; the Southwest Caravan; and, the SE Regional Muster in
Christmas, FL. In '98, they managed to attend the National Muster in
Mayport, FL, and took in the Copper Canyon Caravan in Mexico. In '99,
it was the caravan to Australia-New Zealand-French Polynesia. [It is here
that Bill tells me how much they enjoyed feeding sharks and sting rays...
visiting the Uluru Ayers Rock in Alice Springs in Australia. The stone can
change color to follow the weather, sometimes orange, black, blue etc. It is
considered sacred by the Aboriginals and it is said that pregnant women
go the stone to deliver their babies. Uluru is considered one of the great
wonders of the world and one of Australia’s most recognizable natural
icons. Wonderful memories! ] On the way back from this wonderful caravan,
Bill and Nancy managed to attend the National Muster in Shawnee, OK
and, also, the SE Regional Muster in Myrtle Beach, SC.
In 2000, I am amazed to say they attended the National Muster in Rayne,
LA, and they squeezed in a caravan to China. That same year, Bill was
also the Wagon Master for the Calgary Stampede & the Alberta Loop.
They, of course, attended the SE Regional Muster at Tropical Palms,
Kissimmee, FL. [China was another caravan that they will never forget:
Bejing, the Great Wall, the Yangtze River cruise and Shanghai are among
the highlights. Flying for the first time with a Chinese airline in-country
was a different but pleasant experience – another highlight] In 2001, they
attended the NE/SE Regional in Williamsburg, VA.
In 2002, they attended the National Muster at Myrtle Beach. And then in
2003, they were off to the National Muster in Wichita Falls, TX. In 2004,
they attended S*M*A*R*T’s 20th Anniversary National Muster in Rayne,
The S*M*A*R*T Traveler, March-April 2012
LA, and the SE Regional Muster at Rally Park, Seffner, FL. In 2005,
they were at the SE Regional Muster in Myrtle Beach, SC. In 2006, they
attended the National Muster in Clermont, FL. In 2007, they traveled to the
National Muster in Hutchinson, KS. 2008 had them at the National Muster
in Mobile, AL, and the SE Regional Muster at LazyDays, Seffner, FL. To
date, Bill and Nancy are still involved with the Sunshine Chapter and plan
to attend the SE Regional in April this year.
Based on all of their travels it is very obvious that Bill and Nancy love to
travel and enjoy meeting people. At this point I was very curious, all of the
travels listed here were done with S*M*A*R*T and not FMCA. What made
them stay with S*M*A*R*T and participate in all of these events? It was
Nancy who answered me: "We participated in events with other clubs,
but after spending 29 years in the US Army, we realized that we enjoy
traveling with people that have the same experiences that we have had...
there is a bond that we share ...”
Bill and Nancy will never be disappointed in what they did not do because
they are doing all the things that they want to do…They sailed and caught
the trade winds; they explored; they dreamed; and, they discovered that
S*M*A*R*T offered just what they wanted!
We thank Bill and Nancy Watts for sharing their story with us.
ATTITUDE vs. ALTITUDE
Paul Rider, National Chaplain
During my years in the Air Force, I often heard pilots refer to the “attitude”
of an aircraft, and how attitude affects altitude. A negative “attitude”, held
too long will result in the aircraft crashing, while a positive “attitude” results
in the aircraft remaining in the air. Well, just as a pilot controls the “attitude”
of the aircraft, we control our own attitudes. And if we don’t control our
attitudes, they will surely control us …and take us to our doom.
A certain farmer took charge of his attitude. He did it by filling his mind
with awe and gratitude. He found doing this gave him more energy to work
on problems and to deal with things that needed his attention. But his
neighbor’s attitude could not have been more different.
One summer morning he said to his neighbor, “Look at the beautiful sky.
Did you ever see such a glorious sunrise?” His neighbor countered. “It’ll
probably get so hot the crops will wither.” During an afternoon shower, he
commented, “Isn’t this wonderful? Mother Nature is giving the corn a drink
today.” “And if it doesn’t stop soon,” came the sour reply, “we’ll wish we’d
taken out flood insurance on the crops.” And so it went. Convinced that he
could instill some awe and wonder in his cynical neighbor, he bought a
remarkable dog …not just any mutt, but the most expensive, highly trained
and gifted dog he could find. The animal was magnificent. It could perform
remarkable and impossible feats that the farmer thought would surely
amaze even his neighbor. So he invited her over to watch his dog perform.
“Fetch!” he commanded, and he tossed a stick into a lake where it bobbed
up and down in the water. The dog bounded after the stick, walked ON the
water, and retrieved it. “What do you think of that?” he asked. “Hmmm,”
frowned his neighbor, “Dumb dog can’t swim, can he?”
That story reminds me of a quote from my college years. I don’t recall the
source, but I never forgot the words. The quote is, “Two men look out through
the same bars …one sees the mud, the other sees the stars.”
We can choose our attitude every day. We can choose what we see in
each situation and in each person we encounter. And that simple decision
is likely one of the most important decisions we make. Because your
attitude determines not only how high you fly …but whether or not you are
the center of a spectacular crash!
What is YOUR attitude today? …and where is it taking you?
How S*M*A*R*T Helps!
Many people do not know about S*M*A*R*T and how its members
help out their neighbors in whatever community they are in. Do
you? During 2011, many S*M*A*R*T members were involved
in fundraising within their own chapters (often through 50-50
drawings and personal contributions) making donations to local
and international charities such as the USO, the Fisher House at
Balboa Naval Hospital, as well as sewing the famous Wheel Chair
Bags, and, yes, there is a story behind this: The Evolution of the
Veterans Wheelchair Bag. For those of you who do not know about
this activity, you can read all about it at the Diego Cruisers' website,
www.diegocruisers.com. The Diego Cruisers were named as
recipients of San Diego Channel 10 Community Leadership Award.
Donations were also made to the McCandless Veterans Home in
Florence, CO; the Toys for Tots Programs; books for veterans at VA
hospitals; and several food drives for local churches. The Gulf Coast
Eagles, a Florida chapter, decided to make their annual donation
to Evan Crisler, an autistic grandchild of one of its members. To
read about him go to the SE Region and then click on Gulf Coast
Chapter. Every year S*M*A*R*T members participate at the local
National Cemeteries in honoring our Veterans and contribute also
to the Wreaths Across America Program.
The Surviving Spouse Program is headed up by former President,
Christian Eck. Seminars describing the program are offered at
National Musters and provide vital information to the surviving
spouse. When a member or spouse is lost during the year, Christian
and his capable helpers reach out to offer assistance, where
possible, to the survivor.
At the 2011 National Muster, several charitable activities were
undertaken by the National Spouse Advisory Committee. First, there
was a beautiful Southwestern-design quilt raffled off. Quilt squares
were made by at fourteen quilters and sent to Karen Dietrich who
arranged to have the quilt pieces bound together then professionally
quilted. The money raised from the quilt tickets was donated to
Sew Much Comfort and to the Wounded Warrior Program. Quilters
throughout S*M*A*R*T made a number of beautiful lap robes which
were donated to the local VA Hospital in Oklahoma following the
National Muster. Ladies (and gentlemen) from all over the country
knitted and crocheted over 600 skull caps, 120 washcloths and
17 scarves. These items were donated to the Wounded Warrior
Program (warmthforwarriors@gmail.com) Words of appreciation
were received at HQ from the WWP; these items were immediately
distributed to those who protected us and were wounded doing so.
Tinker Elementary School was the recipient of the school supply
drive organized by the National Spouse Advisory Committee.
Attendees at the National Muster as well as some members who
could not attend the Muster filled eight large boxes with school
supplies. Everything from pencils, erasers, glue sticks, note pads,
binders, Kleenex, paper plates, sani-wipes, index cards, paper
sacks, construction paper, sharpies, band-aids, just to name a few
items, were found in the boxes. The school staff was amazed at the
generosity of people who did not know the school and were not
from the area. The school’s supply closet was nearly depleted; the
supplies were very much appreciated.
S*M*A*R*T does reach out to our Veterans and into its community
wherever it is. There are more community and charitable programs
that S*M*A*R*T members are involved in than are mentioned here
in this article. Without the willingness of S*M*A*R*T members, none
of these activities would have taken place; kudos are due them.
Watch for articles in upcoming issues of the Traveler to see how you
can contribute during 2012.
CARAVANS AND TOURS
Hello SMART Members,
The 2012 caravan season is approaching
and we still have several openings on
caravans. We need your support to keep
the caravan program going strong. Traveling
with other SMART members is one of the
best benefits you have as a club member.
If you have never gone on one of these
caravans please think about signing up
and joining your fellow SMART members. Doug Harrell
The cut off dates are very important and
we need to cancel in a timely manner to recover deposits. So please,
if this is the year you decide to join a caravan sign up ASAP. The
Maritime and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta caravans
are full so please consider one of our other great caravans. The cutoff
date for Alaska has been extended to 1 April. This is a trip of a lifetime
that every member should do at least once. Last year, on our Alaska
caravan we had several members making their second and third
caravans to Alaska with SMART.
I’m looking for ideas for new caravans to explore this great country of
ours. So, if there are areas which you feel have been over looked in the
past please email me with your thoughts. If you would like to organize a
caravan in an area which you are familiar please contact me.
but remember there is a lot of road though Canada, which is also very
scenic. The Caravan will travel up the east side of the Rocky Mountains
through Banff, beautiful Lake Louise and Jasper, Alberta, Canada stopping
by the Columbia Ice Fields along the way. We’ll start the Alaska Highway
Plans are being made to have meals at local restaurants, group pot luck
beautiful Canada. Travel days are planned to be short in mileage, most are
less than 200 miles so you can stop and enjoy the sights along the way.
You will receive a Mile Post magazine and an Alaska Discount coupon
book for each RV unit to save on costs with 2 for 1 prices for a number of
planned activities. You will be given Caravan jackets and other mementos
days, and down time. Get your camera skills ready to capture mountains,
glaciers, bears, moose, caribou, salmon and other fantastic sites on this
once in a lifetime caravan. We need your reservation by 20 March 2012 to
ensure we have enough participants to make this caravan GO. You can sign
up your non-SMART friends. This is a very popular Caravan and is Limited
IN MEMORIUM
In Memory of Joe Marck past President of SMART 2005-2006, spouse
of Leona Marck of St Petersburg, FL. Joe worked tirelessly to promote
SMART an organization he believed in. As he and Leona traveled
across the country, Joe could always convince the office staff at the
Fam Camps to allow him to put a SMART stand and applications on the
counter. Joe and Leona frequently
visited headquarters with gifts of
“Jelly Bellies”. They attended the
rallies of local clubs, regionals and
Nationals. They also supported the
caravans. Joe was a hard worker
and didn’t expect anything in return.
He will be greatly missed.
2012 ROSE PARADE CARAVAN
The Tournament of Roses Parade is "America's New Years
Celebration". This is your chance to become one of the millions who
see this spectacular event up close and personal and to be one of
the first SMART members to do so. You will begin with a welcome
dinner and receive your beautiful red jacket with its embroidered white
rose. The next day we will travel by luxury motor coach to Simi Valley
to tour the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum. You can walk the
interior of the "Flying White House" on the Air Force One Pavilion, see
an exact replica of Reagan's Oval Office, see the piece of the Berlin
Wall he was presented, appreciate the many artifacts, documents and
personal possessions on display there and walk the grounds of the
Memorial Site overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On the way home we
will stop to visit a float construction site and see some of the countless
volunteers "petal pushers" covering every inch with flowers or other
natural materials such as seeds, leaves and bark. On New Years Eve
you will be free to use your ticket to stay as little or as long as you like
at the Bandfest where the 20 plus bands who have earned their place
in the parade will be strutting their stuff. Then you can visit downtown
Pasadena with its restaurants and unique shops and absorb some of
the excitement of the thousands "camping out" along the parade route.
We will ring in the new year at 5:30 in a local restaurant made famous
by its steaks but you can also choose between jumbo charbroiled
shrimp, slow roasted prime rib or Teriyaki chicken. You will need to
get to bed early because tomorrow is THE DAY we are here for. You
will board our bus at 6:30 for the trip to our reserved seats in viewing
stands within the first half mile of the parade. Orange Blvd has a slight
incline in front of us so everything will pass in front of you the slowest
it will on the entire route. The parade begins at 8:00 and takes a little
classic and home-built airplanes - hundreds of them. Walk among them
and talk with the pilots who built and fly them. Watch the extremely large
formations of aircraft pass overhead in staggering numbers. There are
lots of military airplanes to admire and air show performances that “fill
the sky” with aircraft and spectacular pyrotechnics, air races with vintage
warbird aircraft, and an unbelievable aeronautical museum. There are
some of the oldest and newest aircraft to view, lots of seminars on all
aspects of aircraft building & flying, and old flying movies to attend.
Oshkosh brings together a greater number of aviation enthusiasts than
anywhere on earth. Visit the superb EAA aircraft museum and the 1930s
styled Pioneers Airport hangars to relive the growth of aviation.
We’re staying right next to the venue with hookups and shuttles to the
AirVenture Fly-in. We’ll see over 10,000 aircraft from 80 countries, from
240 pound microlights to the biggest airlifters and everything in between,
and you may even be able to ride aboard the EAA's 1929 Ford Tri-Motor
aircraft. Our tours are set up by SMART Member and Retired EAA
Museum/Flight Operations Director Tom Barrett. Come experience a part
of aviation history, and have a little fun also. All activities are handicap
accessible and we’ll have 15 nights of RV hookups.
We are currently limiting this caravan to 20 participant RVs, so sign
up early! SEND $260.00 DEPOSIT WITH APPLICATION. Payment
Schedule, if available will be included with your acknowledgement letter.
over two hours to pass then you will reboard our bus for a wonderful
buffet lunch. After lunch our bus will take us to the Post Parade viewing
location where you can WALK AROUND all the floats at arms length
and take pictures from every angle and be able to fully appreciate
the incredible design, details and colors. And that will end our "most
excellent day". The next day will be yours to do with as you will and
there are dozens of things to choose from to suit every interest. Your
welcome letter from us will detail the many choices you will have so
you can make your plans. Thursday, Jan 3 will find us back on our
bus for a comprehensive Los Angeles/Hollywood city tour which will
include the "sign", Rodeo Drive, Sunset Boulevard, Mann's Chinese
Theater, Kodak Theater (Academy awards), and the world famous
"Farmer's Market" with its 100 plus booths where you can make your
own choice for lunch. After shopping till you drop the bus will take us
to LaBrea Tar Pits and more points of interest. A star studded day
of history, glitz and fun. Friday will be another free day BUT we have
been talking with NBC and the Tonight Show. We were offered tickets
for a Jay Leno taping THIS YEAR when they misread my email. They
will not schedule this early for next year but you can be sure we will
continue talking and hope and pray a day at NBC, lunch and the taping
will be on the agenda. Then on Saturday, January 5 our bus will take
us all the way across town to tour the Queen Mary and after lunch we
will see the Aquarium of the Pacific.
We will say our goodbyes on Sunday morning over a continental
breakfast and begin our trips back home, that is if you want to leave.
Our welcome letter will give you more options for affordable choices
you can make as veterans that you may want to take advantage of
since you are already in the area. When this rally was mentioned in
Shawnee there was a lot of interest expressed as SMART has never
done one here before. Sign up right away so you will be one of the first
to go. Participation will be limited to 42 people. Price includes 8 nights
camping at KOA Fairplex/Pomona which offers free WiFi, laundry,
heated pool, security and your pets are welcome.

Marriage Made in...Alaska!
I met my best friend
in 2001 due to ‘rusty’
well water. I had
recently moved to
Putnam Co. Florida
& not accustomed
to ‘well’ water—I had
become a city girl. I
called Putnam Well Drilling to test my water & hopefully
offer a solution. Lo & behold a Guy Winkleman came to
my house on a Saturday morning to explain the problem
& why the solution (a filter) he offered was so darn
expensive!!! I mean I was a ‘widow woman’—well as we
got to talking (that man could out-talk me) we found a
lot of common ground—I also found in the first meeting
that his dream was to return to Alaska one more time
(he had been 4 times, me never). He came into my life
like the bull in the china shop & became, (is), my best
friend. By late 2002 the man had put that diamond on
my left hand—now you ‘mature’ ladies don’t you just love
to flash that bling around all the young-uns! YES! We
made plans to take that dream trip to Alaska. Guy had a
36 ft 1994 Vectra-230 Cummins—no slides (no leaks!).
We left Putnam Co. FL in late April & crossed over in
Tok, Alaska on June 7 2003—You see we didn’t get in
any hurry—this was my first ‘real’ experience in RV’ng—
first we had to go to SC—why Parris Island of course
for a recruit graduation, then to TN for a grandson’s
HS grad, then there was the Badlands, Mt Rushmore,
Yellowstone, etc.etc. Our ‘base’ while we were in Alaska
was in Houston, AK at the Riverside Camper RV Park—
approximately 50 miles NW of Anchorage. A small (56
site), clean park with wonderful owners, Kenny & Sheila.
We had decided prior to leaving for Alaska to get
married while there. Had we married in either FL or
TN some member(s) of our families would have been
left out—so it’s ‘our’ marriage/wedding. Could not have
picked a more wonderful place or greater wedding
guests. RV’rs I have found are truly awesome. On
June 27, 2003 @ 8:30 pm the ceremony began in the
small outdoor pavilion—the bride wore jeans—so did
the groom—but there were flowers placed by God—a
cake made by man & just how many of you had ‘fresh
smoked salmon’ at your wedding??? In Alaska you do
not have to have a pastor, notary, etc. to perform the
wedding—as long as you have the license anyone can
say the words, however we found a lovely young lady
who did this for extra income. She looked great in her
jeans too! All the RV’rs were the wedding guests & as it
was Alaska in June the sun was still very bright—as the
ceremony was nearing the end though, I saw a number
of the guests leaving the pavilion & was a bit upset—at
the moment the young lady pronounced us husband &
wife, the matron of honor raised my bouquet & as the
Go to smartrving.org website for the details
words were said every air horn in the park went off!!!
WOW—I say again—RV’rs are awesome. Then came
the smoked salmon, cake, etc. AND of course the wild
‘fish’ tales—now this is salmon season in Alaska & not
even my wedding would stop the tall tales—but then
have you ever had a 40+ lb king on your line??? I have
& it is ‘almost’ as exciting as getting married in Alaska.
We were in Alaska from June 7 until end of August. During
this time we traveled up to Fairbanks, down to Homer
& Valdez, went salmon & halibut fishing, gawked at the
breathtaking scenery, met wonderful people, and made
memories of a lifetime. All the places were our ‘favorite’,
but must say one of the most fun days was spent in
Talkeetna at the Talkeetna Moose Droppings Festival—
started with a huge pancake breakfast & ended with
contestants throwing moose ‘droppings’----heyyy it was
fun—there was a bit of everything imaginable during the
day: vendors, food, animals, AND Scottish Bag Pipers—
Then time to head home—was already getting to look
& feel like snow. We came home by way of Casier Hwy,
entering the US in Washington State & drove down the
coast as far as San Diego, then over to 29 Palms—oh
yes another Marine Base, on to Grand Canyon & home
to start ‘real’ life with my best friend.
We joined SMART in April 2011, belong to Florida
Sunshine Chapter & are signed up to go on the 2012
AIBF Caravan in Oct. I found out about SMART from
advertising on the Military Campground USA site & also
Lonnie Simmons told us about the Sunshine chapter.
At present we don’t have the time to travel as we both
would like. We own Putnam Well Drilling, Inc., the office
is in Welaka, FL & we are now both working there. Guy
started the company over 30 years ago & will work until
he can’t as that is his ‘baby’—as for me I ‘retired’ from
health care (an RN) in 2008 & was thoroughly enjoying
retirement, but this past September I went over to the
office to ‘help out’ as had to let the office manager
/ bookkeeper go and oops I am still there---looking
forward to retiring ‘again’ in near future & getting on the
road with my best friend. We are both glad that we joined
SMART & the Florida Sunshine—as we are not able at
present to take long trips (spent summer of 2010 in BIG
SKY Country!), this is a great way to get away from daily
worries, meet some grand people & have fun.
Oh yes, that expensive water filter that started all this???
Just ask Guy-- to this day he continues to moan & groan
that I never did pay for the darn thing!!!
We want to thank Bobbie and Guy Winkleman for
sharing their lovely story with us.
ARKANSAS SMART HOGS
Happy Birthday to us! 1992-2012. The Arkansas
Hogs passed a milestone in February. We celebrated
20 SMART HOG years of “Seeing the Country We
Defend”. We are fortunate to still have two charter
members with us, Lew & Ruby Dellinger and Lee &
Gayle Thomas.
Many of our members have spent the past few
months in more comfortable climates enjoying the
warmer weather. Kic & Eileen spent a few days at
Lazy Days RV Center near Tampa, Florida where
the Florida Buccaneers chapter was having a
muster. We found out that if you have a chance to
visit another chapter’s muster, by all means do so.
We met many new people and had so much fun.
Now we are looking forward to the next National to
see them again. The South Central Regional Muster
is in May. We encourage all members to plan the
trip to Foley, AL. We all need to support our Regional
Musters. Much work goes into the planning.
A rolling muster is being considered, probably to
Shreveport, LA. and Natchez or Vicksburg. Glenn &
Pat Foster, Ann Lowry and Hollis Kinder are hosting
a Muster 5 thru 7 June at Mountain View, AR. Make
campground reservations early as this is a very
popular place in the spring and summer. In July a no
host muster will be at the Downtown Riverside RV
Park, North Little Rock, AR. Come on the 2nd thru
the 5th and have a wonderful view of all the 4th of
July spectacular fireworks on the Arkansas River. Our
new President Jim Franks is going full speed ahead
and has presented many new ideas for the New Year.
Keep an eye on us. Visit our website at arsmarthogs.
com for reservations information and more.
CHATTAHOOCHEE DRIFTERS
The 10th annual Chattahoochee Drifter Christmas
Muster was again a complete success. We were
treated to home cooked meals, pot luck dinners
and breakfast and dinner at local restaurants as
well. During this muster held at Oaks & Pines at
Lake City Fla. Jackie Weis, President of the STAR
Chapter was on hand to present to Al Haynes his
medallion for recruiting 5 new members, allowing
Al membership into the STAR Chapter. Chapter
members took advantage of being close to the
V.A. Hospital by having two hospital staff members
give a brief discussion of the V.A. procedures
and operation of the daily routine. After the very
informative presentation members of the Drifters
departed to the V.A. Hospital with four (4) large
boxes of personal hygiene and comfort items to
present to the residents. After a lengthy tour of the
hospital facilities the Drifters then presented a check
for $250.00 for a resident Super Bowl party.
DRIFTERS
As the outgoing President of the Drifters I would like
to thank the Chapter for a fun filled 4 yrs. I have so
many great memories. At our December Muster our
past chapter Chaplain John Meyers was on hand
12 www.smartrving.org
to install our new chapter officers: President - David
Weis, Vice President - Drew Dupree, Secretary -
Pat Haynes, Treasurer - Dick Davis, Muster Master
- Jackie Weis Congratulations to all, may we have
more fun filled Musters.
FLORIDA ROADRUNNERS
Florida Roadrunners NEW chapter
members and January muster
hosts, Tony & Mary Richter and
their cohosts, also NEW chapter
members, Larry & Bonnie Shields,
wined & dined all who could not
attend. They provided some great home cooked
meals, fresh citrus fruits and door prizes. Those
Florida Roadrunners who could not attend missed
out on meeting NEW faces (potential SMART/
chapter applicants), conversations, plenty of card
games, playing a new outside game "Murbles", and
a tour of the Stephen Foster State Park in White
Springs. Our hosts & cohosts also arranged a
caravan to an Italian restaurant in nearby Lake City.
Great cuisine had many wanting "to go boxes" for
another meal. One lady (guest & potential SMART/
chapter applicant), Winnie Bushouer provided
everyone an eye opener "Treasure Chest" of side
splitting laughs and surprises. Winnie also brought 2
couples to our muster. Those folks left with SMART/
chapter applications in hand. She has others who
are interested in SMART as well. Thank you for
making our chapter/SMART noticed and continued
growing. Some ladies enjoyed touring near by
craft and quilt shops, while others made Valentine
refrigerator magnets.
On Thursday evening, Florida Roadrunners focused
their attention on guest speaker, Jim Bury, Director
of the USO at Jacksonville International Airport.
He provided a small slide show of the hard work,
sacrifices and aid given to our military and their
families by local volunteers and community support.
A few eyes whelmed with tears at the conclusion of
his presentation. Our generous group of listeners
opened their hearts and wallets and donated on the

spot $221.00 to the USO. This local organization does not receive
any funds from their national headquarters in Washington D.C.
During the January Muster, details of the 2012 SE Region Muster
at Wekiva Falls RV Resort in Sorrento, Florida were being worked
on. Please make plans to attend this fun filled event. If you have any
questions or want to volunteer, contact Muster Master John Tesmer,
SE Region Director Melina LeDuc or go to the National website.
GOLDEN GATE CHAPTER
After our General Membership Meeting at our February 2012 Muster
at the Kit Fox RV Park in Patterson California, the entire dayshift of
the Patterson Fire Department along with two really large fire trucks
showed up and presented a seminar on RV fire safety and prevention.
After the informative presentation and a question and answer
session, the firemen toured our RV's to learn about the RV lifestyle.
The program was arranged by Muster Trail Boss Lou Simmons with
Steve Hall of the Patterson Fire Department.
Above: Scenes from the RV fire safety seminar
SMART CAJUNS
About 25 rigs gathered at the Canyon Trails RV
Park in San Marcos, TX again for their January
muster in preparation for the annual trek down into
the Valley for some of the Cajuns. Hoss and Elaine
Bergeron did their usual bang-up job in hosting this
muster with great food and beautiful cutting boards
for all the ladies at the muster. Rita Clark, Lorese
Wolverton and Sharon Nieves received their
cutting boards from Hoss Bergeron first because
they were new to this muster. Though our hosts, the Bergerons, had
to contend with being locked out of the RV because of a broken lock,
none of the Cajuns went without any food as the muster continued.
The SMART Cajuns have a new President, Larry Pousson, former
SCRD, and Vice-President Lee Fontenot who will lead the Cajuns for
2012, once they finish enjoying a relaxing trip to the Valley.
The next muster will be March 13-15 at the Rayne Civic Center and
hosted by Jim and Magdalene Martin with cohosts Lee and Irene
Fontenot. Our annual Ya’ll Come Muster will be held again at Poche’s
Fish 'n RV Campground in Breaux Bridge, April 26-29, and will again
be hosted by the Arceneauxs.
After the San Marcos muster, 15 rigs traveled down to the VIP La
Feria West RV Park in the Valley for some rest and relaxation in the
sun and wind. The temperatures have been in the 80s and we have
been shopping, sight-seeing, flea-marketing, eating, and crossing
the border in Neuvo Progreso, Mexico to enjoy some of the dentists,
restaurants and shops there. Most of the Cajuns stay for about two
weeks in La Feria, TX before they all leave for other destinations until
the next muster in Rayne, LA for our March muster.
Left: Getting ready to shop. Right: Larry Pousson & Lee Fontenot
PROPOSED CHANGE TO SPOUSE MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA
Your VOTE is requested!
During the September 2011 Board of Directors (BOD) Meeting, proposals were considered to make a change in the definition of Associate
Spouse membership contained in SMART Corporate Bylaws Section 4.03.E. Since this proposed change constitutes a significant change
of the Bylaws, a 2/3 affirmative vote of the membership is required to approve the change. This change is to remove the word “Regular”
from the definition of Associate Member, Spouses, thereby allowing the spouses of all members of SMART to become Associate
Members. If approved, the new section of the Bylaws would read as follows:
4.03.E. SPOUSES: Spouses of SMART members.
RATIONALE: By limiting the Associate Spouse membership to only the spouses of Regular Members, a significant number of spouses
are excluded from becoming Associate Members of SMART. By changing the wording of Section 4.03 from “Spouses of regular members
of SMART” to “Spouses of SMART members”, all spouses are afforded an equal opportunity to become Associate Members of SMART.
THE VOTE ON THE PROPOSAL WILL TAKE PLACE USING THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
(1) PAPER BALLOT (USPS mail to SMART HQ) – Cut out the ballot below, mark your vote and place the ballot in an envelope with your
SMART Member Number and the word “Ballot” printed on the outside of the envelope. Each member must use a separate ballot. Seal
the envelope and place it inside another envelope. Place nothing else in the envelope. Address the outer envelope to: SMART HQ, 600
University Office Blvd. Suite 1A, Pensacola, FL 32504.
(2) EMAIL BALLOT – A ballot may be submitted by email to smart@smartrving.org. The Subject Line of the Email must read “Associate
Spouse Ballot”. Then the Email must read: “I vote FOR the change to Section 4.03.E.” OR “I vote AGAINST the change to Section 4.03E.”
Your SMART Member Number must be included in the email for the ballot to be counted. Each member must use a separate email to vote.
(3) IN PERSON – ballots may be cast at SMART HQ in Pensacola, FL during normal office hours, OR at the 2012 National Muster in
Goshen, IN. Unless voting at the National Muster, ALL BALLOTS MUST BE RECEIVED AT SMART HQ BY AUGUST 27, 2012
As a Retired U.S. Army Warrant Officer, I am both excited and
humbled by this new opportunity to offer my personal and
have always made it a point to provide that little extra to the many
active and retired customers that choose Tom Raper RV for their RV
needs, and look forward now to the opportunity to do the same for
each of you who call upon me from your organization.
I was born and raised in the Richmond, IN area and on my retirement
found a new professional home here at Tom Raper RV, which has
allowed me to continue my association with the military community.
With Wright Paterson AFB just a 40 minute drive east, and old Fort
Benjamin Harrison, IN just 60 miles west, my family and I have been
able to continue to enjoy the opportunities and benefits of both.
Tom Raper RV is a family - a family of employees that truly cares
about the wants and needs of today's RVer. I encourage each and
every one of you to use us. If you have a parts requirement, a service
Palo Duro Canyon
A 21 mile drive across the High Plains and into
the depths of Palo Duro Canyon. Most people
quickly become bored by the flat treeless
terrain of the Texas panhandle and respond
by pressing harder on the gas pedal. But the
High Plains hold notable exceptions to the
MONOTONOUS TERRAIN, the most famous
being Palo Duro Canyon. Here the Plains
abruptly drop eight hundred feet into the ragged
gash of Palo Duro Canyon. It houses hiking,
camping, mountain biking, scenic views, an
outdoor drama Texas and a historical museum.
The canyon is 120 miles long, up to 20 miles
wide, and 820 feet deep making it the United
States second largest canyon. The park is home
to many unique geological formations. The
lighthouse is the most famous of these in the
park, and is one of the quintessential postcard
shots in the state. Definitely worth a look. Wild
life abounds.
