COVER: Janmashtami Celebration
Beloved Member Fraternity
A very warm greeting once
again to all of you.
The intensity of the summer
heat is receding in Dubai and
everybody is in the process
of getting geared up for the
impending and, hopefully a
long, winter season. However,
the intensity and energy levels
at our club are hotting up by
the day. We are in the midst of
a long drawn out festive season
and so, have an event lined up
every weekend from now on.
We celebrated the festivals
of Onam, Janmashtami and
Navratri with very well
attended events. A record
number of people joined in
the celebrations and enjoyed
themselves thoroughly. A
mention has to be made about
our executive staff, headed by
the GM, Bharat Chachara, who
ensured that every expectation
was not only met, but exceeded.
We even organized a foam pool
for the Janmashtami event and
the children, not to mention
the young at heart, had a very
‘foaming’ experience.
The summer saw the
successful completion of the
summer camp, sports camp,
plays and talks organized
for our MNC members in
the coming months. The All
India food mela and a Retro
Diwali night, with Sudesh
Bhosle singing classics from
old Amitabh Bachchan movies
are amongst the forthcoming
attractions. The Eid celebrations
will see one more interesting
event PHIR WAHI SHYAM, a
tribute to the musical classics of
the yesteryears.
On a more serious note, India
Club has joined the campaign
to promote the cause of breast
cancer awareness. We firmly
believe that information and
awareness about this condition
will enahnce and save precious
lives.
That having been said, the
next 4 months are going to be
full of high profile and high
energy events which will
guarantee good, clean and
wholesome entertainment.
So all I can say is fasten your
Personal Experience
I
had been feeling quite ecstatic
when I found out that I was going
to be part of the creative kids camp
being held by the good people
of India Club. I was feeling a bit
nervous though, but it didn’t take
me long to blend in and make new
friends quickly.
On our first day, we had public
speaking. I had pretty much expected
what I would be doing, from our first
day. It was awesome! This class had
definitely boosted my confidence
level and thanks to Mr. Lakhi Sawlani
and Mrs. Mala Sawlani, now I am
no victim of stage fright. This was
also my favourite class, other than
caricature drawing, photography,
Bollywood dance and cooking. We
had fun drawing cartoon. We learned
a few mouth watering recipes too,
from Mrs. Gahana Khatwani. Our
cameras sure got a chance to flash on
photography, with Dr. Manu Mehta.
We all had a fun time dancing out
on Bollywood dance tracks with Ms.
Arti Vora. All in all, I had a fun time
and would like to thank everyone
who made this camp possible.
Dahi Handi rocks
An event which is admired by
every individual across the
world and of course not to forget
that the only Club to host it in the
Middle East was celebrated with
great aplomb. Congrats.
It is also a nice initiative to
educate the young generation about
Janmastami.
As I was actively involved in coordinating
and training of the Gopis
& Govindas for the Dahi Handi
event, I would like to thank all the
participants, parents and support
staff who were involved in making
the event a big success.
Apart from the main event an
introduction of Dry foam tub (1st
time at India Club), rain dance, live
dancers and Dj Free Styler added
a touch to the grand success of the
event..
Finally, as we are growing year by
year, we hope to have more entries
next year to form a 4 tier pyramid.
Rice is Nice
Just to put on record the great
time we had – thanks to Pansy
Lobo who organized the function so
thoughtfully.
Well decorated dishes showed how
enthusiastically all members had
participated. It was indeed a tough
job for judges Rakesh Puri, Auxulio
D’Souza and Monal Malhotra to
choose the winners. While judges
were busy selecting the winning
entries, members were kept busy
with the all time favorite game
of Housie. A vegetable carving
demonstration by Ms. Savithri Kisani
was very interesting. Not only were
the winners rewarded, but Mr. Dev
Tharwani of Kohinoor Rice was very
generous in giving lavish gifts to all
the members present, participants
and non-participants.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable
evening that ended with some of the
finest delicacies prepared by our club
chef.
Badminton Tournament
Having participated in the
Interstate Tournament 2010, I
very much appreciate India Club’s
endeavor to conduct such a warm
tournament,40 players 8 teams
one tournament... The India Club
interstate tournament held from
25th September to 2nd October 2010
brought together all the badminton
lovers of India Club. We got to see
a lot of good players giving their
best performance,not for the trophy
but for the spirit of the game and
for their respective teams. A lot of
credit goes to the Sports Committee
Members who continues to take their
best efforts every year to make this
tournament a huge success. Cheers
to Mr. Prakashan A. K., Mr. Kishore
Setpal and Mr. Simon. Managing
40 badminton players and forming
teams is not at all an easy job, but
keeping aside a few confusions.
The tournament was such a hit
with the members that,at the party
that followed the final, there were lot
of requests from the players to hold
the tournament at least twice in a
year. Again thumbs up to the sports
committee for giving players at all
levels, an opportunity to play with
best players of India Club.
I
have been attending the various
events held by the Club on a
regular basis. The recently held
mention. I must commend the club for
a well organised event that brought
back fond memories of home, the
traditions and the togetherness that
goes with it.
Many thanks for organising this
and look forward to attending several
more.
pattern of life of human beings in the whole
world. The growth of civilization has not
only solved the basic necessities of life but
also brought affluence and comfort to man.
However, this age of speed and competition
has increased the stresses and strains which
man is subjected to. In today’s time the price
one pays to achieve success is very high. Life is
stressful and over a period of time this stress
thrusts itself upon our bodies, ultimately leading
to illness and diseases. Achieving balance hence
becomes a problem pushing one to choose
between success and health.
Today yoga is one of the most benefitting
sciences in the whole world being considered
as one of the best forms of alternative medicine.
Yoga clearly answers specific questions that
relate to physical problems like disease,
emotional problems such as anger and spiritual
problems of existence. In stressful times yoga
has proved to be the only antidote for stress.
Yoga is the science of right living, and as such
is intended to be incorporated in daily life. It
works on all aspects of the person: the physical,
vital, mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual.
Yoga has existed for centuries and its benefits
are utilized by people from around the world, it
is the physical and mental therapy that is one of
the biggest achievements of yoga. It is important
to note how yoga uses the wholistic principles
of harmony and unification. It has succeeded as
an alternative for of therapy in diseases such as
asthma, diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis and
in all other chronic ailments
where modern science has
not. Many people consider yoga
as simply the means to maintain good health
and well being. Asanas help in removing stiffness
and discomfort of the body accumulated over a
day and slowly over a period of time. Relaxation
techniques help in releasing stress and calming
the mind.
Yoga is used to unfold deeper layers of
consciousness. The increase in psychosomatic
ailments are posing a great challenge to the
modern medical system. It is here that Yoga
appears to make a vital contribution to the
modern medical system.
Yoga uses Asanas, Pranayama and meditation
to analyse the nature of happiness, emotion
culture by replacing violent negative emotions
of fear, tension, depression, etc. by soft emotions
of divine love, sympathy, pardon etc, and the
trick of working without stresses and remaining
clam.
The major causes of stress today are
insecurity, inability to control a situation, fear,
judgmental attitude, lack of understanding, the
differences between real and desired world,
problems in relationships, self understanding
etc. through asanas, pranayama and several
meditation techniques, yoga helps in centering a
person loosening the grip and stress so as to see
life clearly. Yoga does not accept stress and then
combat it but rather aims at bringing a high level
of awareness inside a person that makes him
understand the roots of stress. Stress develops
when a stream of thoughts go against the
grain of the mind thus the trick lies in not just
INTER STATE BADMINTION TOURNAMENT
The Annual India Club Inter State Badminton Tournament 2010, for senior members above 18
in the tournament. Each team
consisted of five players. Seven
this event.
The qualifying rounds were
played on a round-robin
basis. The final was played
on Sat., 2nd Oct. 10 between
Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, in
which theUttar Pradesh Team
triumphed.
Uttar Pradesh Team (Winners)
comprised of: Rohit Haridas
Delhi Team (Runners Up)
Question
combating stress but also analyzing and treating
stress from the roots. In stress situations the
body releases certain stress hormones which
increase the palpitation of the heart in turn
straining the heart. This is what makes a person
feel nervous, distressed, uncomfortable and
unable to cope with a situation. There are also
stress-releasing hormones which get released
due to the regular practice of asanas which aid
in stress relief.
The body is just the manifestation of the mind,
hence it is essential to keep the mind healthy
all the time. It is the mind that has the ability
to create a problem and solve it as well. When
there exists an imbalance in this functioning of
the mind the mental peace is completely lost.
The common problems of the mind are usually
depression, disappointment, worry, illusion, fear
etc. lead to many psychosomatic problems
leaving a person restless, angry, anxious,
depressed, irritable and sleepless which slowly
lead to more serious problems such as high
blood pressure, heart problems and problems
of the brain and nervous systems. Through the
practice of meditations and various relaxation
techniques in yoga all the problems of the mind
can be easily tackled. Meditation increases the
awareness of the mind which in turn helps a
person to develop the ability to focus on one
object at a time and easily detect stress or any
obstruction almost immediately.
Meditation is achieving and understanding the
calmness and silence of the mind. It is a science
of feeling and observing. As we all know that
the mind can be very smart and manipulative,
one has to always be aware and observe
A prize distribution ceremony
was held after the final. Mr.
Sunil Singh ex officio chairman,
presented the trophies to the
winners, Uttar Pradesh Team
and to the runners-up, Delhi
Team.
The badminton committee
comprising of A. K. Prakashan,
board of director, sports, and
Kishore Setpal carried out the
daily match proceedings of the
tournament. 0
How does meditation help in calming
the mind?
Ans..................................................................
its’ patterns. Yoga talks of meditation as the
treatment of the unsettled mind, but strangely
when one starts meditating the mind acts and
thinks the most, but it is only after this state
that the mind starts experiencing large periods
of silence in between thoughts. This in the long
run helps a person process each thought with
attention and act upon them calmly, without
getting tensed, worried and finally frustrated.
Meditation teaches us to respond to situations
rather than reacting to them.
The important aspect here is that one
should not conflict between the silence and
thoughtfulness but practice the art of expanding
the silence alone. This cannot be forced and it
has to happen naturally. Thoughtlessness is the
gift of effort in the process of living in the right
mind over a long period of time.
In times of stress the mind can achieve
calmness only through meditation. A calm
person can achieve the goal very easily
compared to one who is tensed. Meditation
teaches us the attitude of nothing is impossible.
Yoga gives firmness of the body, clarity of
intelligence and cleanliness of heart. Cultivating
this supreme strength of peace, joy and delight
is the true and essence of yoga.
GM’s desk
We are promoting
the cause of Breast
Cancer awareness
throughout the month of
October. Although this topic is
no longer taboo in our society,
additional thought and caring
needs to be infused amongst
the mindset of people towards
the sensitivities of women
already afflicted or prone
to this disease. In line with
this, the Clubs’ façade will be
lit up with pink lighting to
help create awareness of this
increasingly common ailment
and seminars and workshops
are being organized in this
regard.
Ladies volunteers from the
club participated in the Pink
book sale at the Burjuman
Cente on October 8th to
raise funds of Breast Cancer
awareness.
As an extension of this
project, we will be collecting
books from our members
which can be sold for
collecting funds for this cause.
More details will be sent to
you shortly.
An ‘All India Food Mela’
is being planned for October
28, 2010 which is going to be
a gastronomic fantasy come
true for all the foodies out
there. A tastebud titillating
fantasia for all. Members
are being invited to set up
stalls of various regional
Indian cuisines to showcase
the diverse smorgasbord of
culinary delights that India
has to offer. We are hoping
that this event will replicate
and surpass the success
of the Sangam Mela held
earlier this year, showcasing
three regional cuisines.
These continuous efforts are
undertaken by us, not only to
encourage active participation
from our members but also
to expose them to the multi
cultural fabric of our country.
Our younger generations are
kept interested through such
exchanges because, we believe
that somehow food does have
a bearing on the ethos of our
people.
The ‘Festival of Lights’,
Diwali will be lit up this year
with the luminous presence
of veteran leading light and
singer par excellence Sudesh
Wadkar on November 11.
This particular event is being
dedicated to Amitabh Bachchan
and the rip roaring 70s. The
Club is organizing a dress
theme for its members and
guests for the first time, and it
is expected to see the best of
you in bell bottom trousers,
polka dotted shirts with big
collars and ladies sporting
handsome curly hair do’s. We
are hoping to supply for an
evening which is reminiscent
of a certain bygone era, not too
long back. This fun filled event
should provide for some good
natured laughs and probably
memories of tender moments
for some, if not all.
Our Eid celebrations slated
for November 25 will take you
down memory lane of the 50s
and 60s with a program ‘Phir
wahi Shyam’. Unforgettable
tunes of Geeta Dutt, Hemant
Kumar and Talat Mehmood
being sung by some of the
very best current talents from
India, are sure to provide the
nostalgia that, that particular
period evokes. At times it
becomes necessary to hark back
upon our lilting past to instill
a kind of euphoria, to combat
the stressful effects of our fast
paced lives today.
The recycling bins at the
Club have been relocated from
gate no.2 to gate no.3 Members
can either contact the reception
or library for recycling
newspapers, cans, plastics……
We do hope this is not causing
inconvenience to all of you and
that it does not dissuade you
to continue contributing, to
our combined fine efforts with
the Emirates Environmental
Group.
