Oswaldo GuayasamínBeginning in the late 1940s, Oswaldo Guayasamín was a leadingsocial activist in Ecuador who through his art opposed violence, war, genocide and social injustice. Guayasamin’s paintings andsculptures are defined as an art of indigenismo or figurativeexpressionism that depicts the human figure in powerfully distortedproportions and exaggerated forms. As seen in this painting,Guayasamin’s subjects often appear as heroic individuals, but theworks of art manifest his outcry against the unjust treatment of theindigenous Andean populations who have suffered exploitation.LOT 15OSWALDO GUAYASAMÍN(ECUADOR, 1919 –1999)Indio colorado / Red Indian (Ecuadorian Indian), n.d.mixed media on paper, 29 x 21 1 /2 in. He profiles thedesolation of humanity in his deformed and disproportionedfigures which are usually anonymously grotesque characters in hisdrawings, prints and sculpture. Beginning in 1991,Cuevas began to bring his characters to life in small andmonumental sculptures. Francisco CorzasAlthough Corzas was associated with the 1960s Mexicanmovement of Nueva Presencia, his style and themes can be indebtedto German expressionism and the Italian new realism filmmakers,Fellini and Rossellini. Corzas’ harshly stark figures and groupingsusually appear isolated and are shrouded in a strong chiaroscuro ormonochrome palette of color and hue. In the early 60s, he focusedon the subject of nomads and outcasts of society which he calledtrashumantes or perpetual wanderers of the circus. In thesepaintings, “They [the figures] live perilously on the fringes of society[…]semitragic figures, caught in a ghostly, luminous light andshadow, looking out at us for a brief moment before they move on.”(Goldman, Contemporary Mexican Painting in a Time of Change, p. 124)LOT 57FRANCISCO CORZAS(MEXICO, 1936 –1983)Pintor romántico / Romantic Painter, 1964oil on canvas, 38 x 33 in. Andres MichelenaVenezuelan artist, Andrés Michelena, has developed his career asa painter and a conceptual artist. He often pursues the subject ofreligion and spirituality in his art. This mixed-media paper work, utilizing Chinese newspaper, appropriates Pop Art techniques tocreate the image. Michelena comments on the Dalai Lama’sphilosophical view that the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibetexpanded Buddhism throughout the world. Based on this concept,Michelena constructed the central figure of Mao withTibetan stamps to represent him with a Buddha-like hair style, giving him the status of a master.
