From the Chairman:
January News
Happy New Year to all and welcome to 2016 at the
club. I’m sure this year will be even better than ever.
Welcome 2016
Just looking back for a moment, I’d like to reflect on
2015 at Mimosa Hills. It starts with a big thank you to
all of our board members who worked so hard to make
your club successful. Thanks for all their support to
Mark Bennett, John Branstrom, Knox Matthews, Don
McGinnis, Dick Peck, Buddy Riebel, John Sallstrom and
Tom Starnes. We started the year by announcing our
new pricing and growth strategy. The year started
slowly with some late snow and cold temperatures but
then we grew as spring arrived. Our growth brought us
many new members for the year across all categories.
We knocked the ball out of the park with our non
resident and social membership growth. What a
difference our new bar and grill area made. We could
just feel the excitement at the club. I want to again
thank Jim Best for his vision in making this a reality.
(From the Chairman continued from page 1)
As mentioned, the late cold weather took its toll on parts of the golf course, especially causing
winter kill on hole number 12 and a few other areas. But with Dan Winters and his staff’s
work, the golf course was in fine shape all summer. We’ve started some repairs as you’ve seen
on the ninth hole and plan to continue work into spring and summer via a new donors club
which will be announced later this month.
So 2015 was a positive year for our club. Yes, we still have challenges. Our membership
growth has come primarily in our lower revenue categories and we continue to search for ways
to grow our resident golfing members. We still need everyone’s help in recruiting new
members. Also, we have needs for repairs at the pool and to the clubhouse roof which will
require some investment. The board is researching costs and alternatives and will share more
information at the annual meeting.
Finally, a special thanks to all members who generously donated to our Employee Christmas
Fund. Our group of dedicated employees very much appreciates your generosity.
At our December Board Meeting we approved two new members, David & Sherry Beard and
Bill & Jean Childs, both Non-Resident members. Let’s all provide them with a warm welcome.
Personally, it has been a privilege to be your president and I look forward to seeing you at our
annual meeting January 31 at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse. All members are welcome and voting
packets will be mailed to stockholding members in January.
As always, I look forward to seeing you at Mimosa and want to share all the best wishes for a
healthy and happy new year. Let’s all stay warm and look forward to an early spring.
I hope everyone had a safe holiday and wishing all the best for 2016!
December temperatures were very unusual and even had the bermudagrass
greening up in areas. One would have to expect that winter will return and with a
vengeance! But let us enjoy what good golfing days we can get in. It is still important
Life to pitch and in Events and fill as at many divots with the sand as possible throughout the winter
months. Mimosa This Hills prepares us to be caught up for the spring awakening of the
bermudagrass. Every little bit helps. A special thanks to the folks that go above and
beyond the call of duty.
their ‘Turffiles’ site, which is a wealth of information for anyone interested to tap
into. Check it out!
WARM DECEMBER WEATHER MEANS...?
DECEMBER 14, 2015
BY RICK BRANDENBURG
What will the warm weather in December do to the insect problems next spring? I
get these questions a lot. What will the mild winter do, or what will the cold winter
do to our insect problems next spring and summer?
The answer is always the same: ALMOST NOTHING! Whether the winter is cold or
mild, insects manage to survive and be ready for warm temperatures in the spring
much the same each year. The most important factors are spring temperatures and
the rainfall. And please, don't pay any attention to the woolly worm and how wide
the stripe is on its back. The width of the stripe is merely a reflection of the age of
the caterpillar not of the upcoming winter weather.
Dear Fellow Members,
This month's article is bitter sweet for me. It will be my last as Tournament Chairman,
but has caused me to reflect on all the successes we have created for Tournament
Golf at Mimosa Hills over the last 3 years.
Let me start by looking ahead. The Tournament Committee has elected Kelly Snipes
as the 2016 Tournament Chairman. Kelly has been an active member of the
Tournament Committee over the last 3 years, is an active tournament competitor at
Mimosa Hills, and is eager to build on the successes our committee has created. I
look forward to continuing to be a part of the committee under Kelly's leadership. I
know he will accomplish great things. We also welcomed Jordan Greene to the
Tournament Committee at our last meeting. I know that Kelly and I both appreciate
his willingness to serve in this capacity and look forward to his contributions to the
group.
At our last committee meeting, we approved the 2016 Tournament Schedule which I
presented to the full board during our December meeting. The Board of Governors
voted to approve the schedule and you will receive a copy in your January statement
mailing. It will be posted to the Club website before then, but here are a few
highlights.
Mimosa Cup April 16th-17th with pairings party the evening of April 15th.
Member-Member April 30th-May 1st (Please note that this is one week earlier than
usual due to the first full weekend in May falling on Mother's Day weekend)
Club Championship August 20th-21st (This has been moved off of Labor Day weekend
those of you who requested the change in the event this year!)
Four-Ball Invitational October 1st-2nd (Rain Date October 22nd-23rd)
Fall Member Member October 15th-16th
Now, for a time of reflection.... During the last three years, our club has had many new
events and formats to compete with your fellow members (New One Day Events, The
Inaugural Mimosa Cup, British Open Breakfast, among others), Member-Guest was
rebuilt to the great weekend it should be, we changed the tournament trophies to the
framed Mimosa Flags that have been so well received, and have seen more participation
across the board. A lot of work went into making tournament golf the best it has been in
recent years and I am proud of what we have accomplished.
Finally, I'd like to thank the committee members who served so faithfully during my 3
years as Tournament Chairman. Geoff Messenheimer, Roger Moon, Kelly Snipes, Randy
Walker, Chester Ragland, and Bob Brown. I'd especially like to thank Jimmy Piercy for his
contributions and passion for the game of golf within Mimosa Hills. He had the
challenge of executing the group's ideas and did so in fantastic fashion. Thank you all!
I hope that the new year brings you many opportunities to play golf at Mimosa and
sincerely hope you will make great efforts to compete in our tournament events.
Thank you,
A golf course that remained in excellent shape throughout the year, the opening of
the Bar and Grill, revised membership rates and categories, a new upstairs meeting
space, junior golf programs, and excellent tournaments and social events all
combined to make 2015 a great year at Mimosa Hills.
The membership committee and the board would like to thank you for making 2015
an outstanding year and helping us attract many new members. Let’s make 2016
even better. Mimosa is an important part of our local community and we need to
continue to work together and communicate the many benefits that Mimosa offers
local golfers and families.
The marketing committee is excited about our plans for this new year. Our goals are
to continue to increase membership, and work hard to make sure that Mimosa
continues to provide the best services and offerings to our members and the local
community. One of the biggest initiatives for 2016 is to bring the pool..…up to 2016.
In the coming months we will communicate our plans to implement needed
upgrades to the pool and to create an improved pool experience.
For those members that are gradually stepping down from the pre-2015
membership rates, unfortunately we fell short of our new membership goals for this
quarter. Therefore, there will be no dues reduction at this time. Let’s work together
and attain our membership goals for the upcoming quarter, so that we can continue
to reduce rates to the current levels. Over the last year, this is the first step down
that was not attained. Keep up the good work helping us promote Mimosa.
If you are interested in helping with the pool or membership committees, please
contact Lynn Allen or myself.
Thank you and Happy New Year.
