FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIP SUPPORT
Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 precisely because Mary Sumner saw just how
unsupported even the most diligent of mothers could feel when faced with the sole
responsibility for bringing up children. Parenting isn’t easy.
Today Mothers’ Union continues to equip and support all parents
in their role. There are many local initiatives that provide support
and information for parents being carried out across 83 countries.
But our flagship parenting work is achieved through the training of
members to become facilitators of parenting groups.
These groups, which typically meet regularly for 8 – 12 weeks,
provide parents with a safe space to discover how to build secure
and loving relationships, how to build a child’s self esteem,
issues such as setting boundaries and dealing with challenging
behaviour, dealing with bullying, adolescence and the influence
of the media and difficult topics such as sex and suicide. In some
countries where families have no social services or other support
systems in place Mothers’ Union is the lead voice on practical
support for families.
Since 2000 thousands of parents have benefited from these
groups, which now run in 28 countries around the world.
