Getting the most out of your fitness center membership
Dennis D. Jacobs,
Contributing Editor
You have made a New
Year’s resolution to get in
better shape and you figure
getting a fitness center
membership — or making
better use of an existing
membership — would be a
good start.
Now what?
The answer to that question
depends on your fitness
goals. Are you trying to lose
weight? Are you trying to
build strength? Are you trying
to become the next Mr.
America? You probably
want to pick a fitness center
that has expertise in helping
people achieve their specific
goals.
For example, if you’re
looking for a fitness center
that can help you shed
unwanted pounds, Anytime
Fitness in Orland Park
might be a good choice. Ken
Howard opened the facility
two years ago after going
through his own personal
weight-loss struggle.
Howard grew up in Maywood
and was an athlete at
Fenwick High School in Oak
Park. From there, he walked
on to the Purdue basketball
team and was good enough
to make their practice squad.
When his basketball career
ended, however, he began to
put on the pounds.
“Just like a lot of athletes,
when you’re playing days
are over, you continue to
eat like you’re still an athlete
even though you don’t
have the output to keep
those calories from sticking
to your ribs,” Howard said.
“Over the years, I became
a little less active. ... What
I thought was working out
pales in comparison to what
I now consider to be living a
healthy and active lifestyle.”
Howard, 43, lost both his
parents to heart disease and
acknowledges he struggled
emotionally to deal with
their deaths.
“I was in a fog,” he said.
“I didn’t really know which
side was up.”
His weight increased to
more than 200 pounds for
the first time in his life. He
recognized he needed to
make a change.
“One day I just looked in
the mirror and said ... what
would my parents want me
to do in a situation like this?
Do I cave in and fold or can
I step up to the plate and
handle it and try to make my
stumbling block into a stepping
stone?”
Howard chose the latter
route, starting a program
called P90X. His success
with the program ultimately
inspired him to open Anytime
Fitness at 11033 W.
179th St.
“All my years of playing
basketball and being
an athlete, never once did I
have six-pack abs that I was
proud to display,” Howard
said. “Now, I finally have the
physique that I want and I’m
trying to maintain it.”
Howard is certified as a
personal trainer and also is
an authorized P90X trainer.
P90X is short for Power
90 Extreme and was developed
by celebrity fitness
trainer Tony Horton. It utilizes
a variety of equipment,
including free weights, pullup
bars and yoga blocks. It
was designed to create what
Horton calls “muscle confusion,”
to prevent the body
from becoming too accustomed
to a routine workout
pattern and plateauing.
Go insane
Anytime Fitness offers
P90X classes and also Insanity
workout classes.
Anytime Fitness Insanity instructor
Izabella Jamrocha is
another weight-loss success
story. Three years ago, she
weighed nearly 300 pounds.
“I reached a point in my
life where I was chronically
depressed and I didn’t like
the way that I felt,” Jamrocha
said. “A lot of people
are shocked when I tell them
the transformation, the mentality
of just wanting to be
happy and healthy, sometimes
it just does come overnight.
You decide you’ve
had enough and you take the
necessary steps to accomplish
that happiness.”
Jamrocha, 29, took the
necessary steps and she
said through hard work and
perseverance, she lost more
than 100 pounds. Then
she saw an ad in the Tinley
Junction (owned by 22nd
Century Media) newspaper
Orland Park resident
Lindsay Bartok works out at
Anytime Fitness, 11033 W.
179th St. in Orland Park.
seeking a manager for Anytime
Fitness.
“I was dabbling with the
idea of getting into fitness,
but I wasn’t 100 percent sure
that’s what I wanted to do,”
she said. “But when I found
the ad in the paper, it was
like a sign I couldn’t ignore.”
“Now I’m a personal
and about half the size that
I used to be,” she said. “It’s
been a fantastic journey and
I wouldn’t trade it for the
world. It was hard work, but
so worth it. The confidence I
have now I’ve never had before
in my life.”
Now she wants to help
others achieve the same
success, through programs
like Insanity.
“The format of Insanity ...
helps target stored body fat,”
Jamrocha explained. “Insanity
is a phenomenal program
because it does very
challenging moves that you
don’t need any equipment
for, you only use your own
body and it helps you build
strength and endurance.”
If you’d rather do your
own thing, like chasing that
Mr. America title, Anytime
Fitness has plenty of equipment
to help you achieve
your goal. In addition to
free weights and weight machines,
there are treadmills,
ellipticals and bikes.
“Each one has a personal
television and cable box,”
Jamrocha noted. “We get
like 60-70 different cable
channels. I always encourage
people to come in and
bring headphones when
they work out in case they
get bored, so they can work
out for longer.”
Diagnosis gives Frankfort man a ‘wake-up call’
Palos Community
Hospital committed
to diabetes program
Staff Report
A few months ago, Mark Hoops lost
his younger brother to kidney cancer.
Depressed, he turned to food to help
him deal with it.
“I was doing a lot of emotional eating
late at night; it was my way of coping,”
he said. “I got super heavy. I wasn’t exercising.
My body just quit.”
Hoops, 51, of Frankfort, concealed
how he was feeling for four or five
months because he did not want to
worry his family, who had already been
through so much. But he felt tingling in
his arms and feet and was out of breath
when walking up stairs. He knew he
needed to seek help.
He made an appointment with Dr.
Richard DeJong, his family physician
with Palos Medical Group. He was diagnosed
with Type 2 diabetes, which
accounts for 90-95 percent of all people
with the disease.
Hoops’ diabetes was in the early
stages, and he immediately began
taking medication to help control his
blood glucose levels.
“That’s when I started getting serious
about taking ownership of my
diabetes,” he said. “Just by changing
what I eat and exercising, it has made
seismic shifts in the way I control my
diabetes and manage my life.”
A registered dietitian from Palos
Community Hospital’s Nutrition Counseling
and Diabetes Program Services
talked with Mark about monitoring his
blood glucose, helped him adjust his
diet and provided motivation for necessary
lifestyle changes.
“Our goal is to equip patients with
the knowledge, skills and tools they
need to successfully manage their diabetes
and delay or prevent many of the
complications associated with the disease,”
said Lela Iliopoulos, a registered
dietitian who serves as dietitian supervisor
for Diabetes Program Services
at Palos.
Hoops says the one-on-one time with
the registered dietitian was “phenomenal.”
They talked through strategies,
goals, what to eat and how to count the
values of the foods he eats.
“I walked out with marching orders,
and I’ve followed them every day
since,” he said.
With diet and exercise, Mark lost
nearly 70 pounds, averaging roughly
1.5 pounds a week. His ultimate goal
is to lose about 20 more pounds, which
would put him at the weight he was
when he got married.
Hoops said he does not see having
diabetes as a detriment.
“It caused me to wake up,” he said.
“I actually consider my diagnosis to be
something that helped me get back in
control of my life.”
Beyer Chiropractic has treatment
options for thyroid conditions
Staff Report
Losing weight and living a
healthier lifestyle is a popular
New Year’s resolution; but for
many, diet and exercise alone
doesn’t cut it — and it may
not be their fault.
Research suggests there is
an estimated 20 million cases
of undiagnosed hypothyroidism
in the United States, a
chronic condition that causes
abnormal production of thyroid
hormones affecting the
body’s metabolic processes.
Researchers regard a lack
of comprehensive testing in
mainstream medical practices
as one of the main culprits to
the finding.
“Traditional medical approaches
to thyroid conditions
are over 50 years old,” said
Manuel S Mesirow MD
Vivek Iyengar MD
and Physician Assistants
· Treatment for acne, psoriasis,
eczema, rosacea and other skin
conditions
· Laser services for skin
rejuvenation, and scar
improvement
Dr. Stephen Beyer. “It only
recognizes one type of thyroid
malfunction, when in actuality
there are 24 specific ways the
thyroid can be dysfunctional.
In most instances, individuals
seeking treatment are receiving
antiquated care and are not
being diagnosed properly.”
Through advancements in
medical understanding and
approaches, most thyroid
problems can be managed
well if properly diagnosed and
treated. A lot of times this can
be done naturally, without any
harmful drugs or side effects.
Diagnosed with a lowfunctioning
thyroid condition
at the age of 18, Corey
[last name withheld] suffered
from insomnia, weight gain,
depression and moodiness
for more than a decade before
finding relief at the Beyer Chiropractic
Center in Frankfort.
“For years I felt like there
was a film over my eyes and
life,” he said. “Ever since this
new treatment, that film has
been lifted. The weight started
falling right off, I slept better,
and the pressure was gone –
It’s been life changing.”
When asked what makes
his methods so different from
general procedures, Beyer
attributes research advancements,
new methods and
a more natural, functional
approach.
“What we do is unique,”
Beyer said. “We do proper
testing - not guessing - to
find out what is really going
on with your body. Then we
focus on fixing the cause, not
covering the symptoms.”
The difference?
Proper testing and a very
powerful “neuro-metabolic”
or functional approach in
the treatment of thyroid conditions.
This approach has
given relief to many who
have suffered for years under
the traditional drug/hormone
approach.
Alice suffered from a variety
of symptoms including
weight gain, fatigue, vertigo
and brain fog. She started seeing
results immediately after
seeking treatment at Beyer
Chiropractic Center.
“My kids are excited to
have their mom back,” Alice
said. “My husband is excited
to have his wife back, and I’m
excited to have my life back.
And it was all done in a 16-
week program.”
Common symptoms of
thyroid conditions include:
fatigue, difficulty managing
weight gain/loss, cold hands
and/or feet, heart palpitations,
difficult or infrequent bowel
movements, depression, insomnia,
lack of motivation,
night sweats, mental sluggishness,
thinning hair/ hair
falling out,and dryness of skin
and/or scalp.
Escape the ordinary
If you’re looking for a
workout that’s out of the ordinary,
Anytime Fitness has
you covered.
“We also do the suspension
training here, which is
a great workout just using
your own body weight,”
Jamrocha said. “So, unlike
some workouts where
you’re lifting heavy weights
to build muscle, the TRX
is good for shaping and
sculpting. It helps elongate
muscles.”
There’s also unusual
equipment available.
“We have battle ropes,
which is kind of nice because
not many facilities
have them unless it’s a
training studio,” Jamrocha
said. “You can get a really
cool upper body workout in
with those. Just doing those
for 30 seconds, I guarantee
you’ll break a sweat.”
Jamrocha said the most
common excuse people
have for not working out
is that they don’t have the
time. At Anytime Fitness,
members can’t use that excuse
because they literally
hold the key to their own
success. Members are given
a special key fob that gives
them 24/7 access to the facility,
365 days a year.`
Challenge yourself
No matter your fitness
goals, Challenge Fitness
in Lockport can help you
achieve them.
“There’s really something
for everybody,” Challenge
Fitness Manager Ben
Ragle said. “Our membership
here includes a lot.
Our base membership gets
you access to the fitness
center and gets you access
to the locker rooms, steam
room, whirlpool and heated
lap pool. ... Membership
always has its privileges
here.”
An annual membership at
Challenge Fitness is $259
for Lockport residents and
$319 for non-residents.
Members receive discounts
for tennis and racquetball
court rentals, as well as fitness
programs.
“We offer over 40 classes
a week, everything from
Body Jam to the Les Mills
system,” Ragle noted.
“We’re a franchisee of Les
Mills. We’re able to offer
all the classes.”
That includes Body
Pump, Body Step and Body
Combat, which Ragle described
as “along the lines
of cardio kick boxing.”
There’s also Body Jam, a
dance-style fitness class.
“It’s insane,” Ragle said.
“We actually have a free
sample of it Jan. 16.”
One of the newest fitness
programs formulated by
Mills, a former New Zealand
Olympian, is Grit.
“It’s kind of like smallgroup
training ... formulated
by a world-class development
team,” Ragle said.
Ragle said Grit includes
strength, plyometrics, and
cardio training and refreshes
every three months.
“We have just about everything
under the sun that
you can think of as far as
health, wellness and fitness
goes,” Ragle said. “Personal
training in a group
setting has been really big
for us, especially our Largest
Loser program.”
The Largest Loser program
is similar to the
popular NBC television
program, “The Biggest
Loser.” A personal trainer
leads teams through workouts
designed to help participants
achieve their
weight-loss goals. Prizes
are awarded to individuals
for the largest percentage
of weight lost, the largest
percentage body fat reduction,
and the most inches
lost from their waistline.
The members of the team
with the most weight loss
also receives awards.

Exercising out of the box
Hula-hooping serves as
alternative to the norms
Meredith Dobes,
Contributing Editor
For those who aren’t into
going for a long, boring jog
(particularly in the freezing
cold, Midwest winter), investing
in a gym membership
(with all those judging eyes)
or playing a typical team
sport, there is an alternative.
There is a way to have fun,
get fit and make exercise
your own — if that kind of
thing matters to you.
Googling “alternative exercise
methods” certainly
pulls up a list of interesting
results. Bloggers and fitness
experts write about exercise
methods ranging from
dancing in stilettos for leg
strength to parkour — an
activity that involves scaling
fences or walls and using
maximum muscle movement
to get from place to place,
usually practiced outside.
Thinking outside of the fitness
box can make exercise
more appealing, entertaining
and comfortable.
My alternative exercise
of choice is Hula-hooping.
Hula-hoops are not just toys,
and hooping can be an intense,
fun workout.
The type of Hula-hooping
I do involves elements of
dance and uses muscles in
the core, and upper and lower
body.
I just began this form of
exercise in the summer, so I
am currently somewhere in
between a beginner and intermediate
level.
This exercise form can be
seen as just a talent or a series
of tricks — routines can be
used for performance — but
its benefits are undeniable. It
increases coordination and
balance. As more moves are
mastered, the intensity and
speed at which they can be
done tones muscles.
To start, picking the right
hoop is essential to success,
especially as a beginner.
It is possible to use hoops
purchased in the toy section
of Target or Wal-Mart,
but these may be too small
and are likely not weighted
correctly.
A good rule of thumb is to
choose a hoop that reaches
your belly button when set
on the floor. Hoops made
for adult beginners are typically
made from thicker tubing
that creates slower spin,
which is much easier to use
when learning moves. These
hoops can be bought online
from a variety of companies.
Before buying a hoop, it is
a good idea to do some research
on hoop companies
to ensure the hoop will be of
good quality and will last.
The essential beginning step
is to rotate the hoop around
the hips. From there, by using
different abdominal muscles,
the hoop can be moved from
the core to the chest or from
the core to the legs.
Moving the hoop up and
down the body — without
placing it there with one’s
hands — requires the use
of most abdominal muscles.
This is one of the most
strenuous parts of hooping.
Though hooping, itself, is
exercise, it is a good idea
to supplement hooping with
running or another cardiovascular
exercise that works
out the abdomen in order to
strengthen the core.
Hand movements can be
incorporated into hooping,
particularly when the basic
skills are mastered and the
person is finding his or her
“flow.” Flow is defined as
the complete focus on the
rhythm of hooping. Once
flow is obtained, the person
can move from skill to skill,
with ease, in a routine.
For those who would prefer
to learn by example, there
are hula hoop classes — in
this area, primarily in Chicago
— and there is a huge
online community of people
who practice Hula-hooping.
Tutorial videos on YouTube
are my main teacher.
The one thing to remember
is that new skills should
be worked on until mastery
is complete. It can be frustrating
when something is
not working, and it can be
exciting when a skill is done
right for the first time. However,
working on skills until
they have been perfected
will be the most beneficial
to muscles and, if desired, to
performance routines.
Hula-hooping is just one
alternative form of exercise,
and it happens to be one
of my exercises of choice,
based on my living situation
and personal interests.
If you’re tired of the normal
activities you most likely
learned about in high school
gym class, there is an exercise
form out there for you.
It just takes a little bit of
research and a whole lot of
self-motivation.
Presence Neuroscience Institute provides care for brain, spine, nervous system
Staff Report
Presence Neuroscience
Institute formally opened
in 2011 at what was then
Provena Saint Joseph Medical
Center. But the history
of what has been ranked the
“top neuroscience program
in Illinois” started well before
that time, and the program
continues to build in
magnitude and reputation.
“What is most important
are the outcomes our patients
experience,” explained Beth
Hughes, regional president
and CEO of Presence Saint
Joseph Medical Center in Joliet
and Presence St. Mary’s
Hospital in Kankakee. “Our
neuroscience program has
grown steadily, accepting increasing
numbers of transfers
from area hospitals of patients
who require complex
care. We are pleased to be
able to partner with those organizations
to ensure patients
receive the highest level of
neuro care while keeping patients
closer to home.”
Specialists in neurology,
neurosurgery and neuroendovascular
intervention are together
in the Neuroscience Institute,
making collaboration
across all disciplines seamless.
Together, they provide
the region’s most advanced
care for the brain, spine and
nervous system. From diagnosis
through rehabilitation,
the Neuroscience Institute offers
the most advanced care
previously only found at major
academic medical centers.
An expert 24/7 neuro
team, armed with the newest
methods and technologies, is
able to expand the window
for successful treatment of
stroke — even reverse some
of the effects of a stroke.
“Time is still of the utmost
importance when dealing
with stroke, but working directly
with first responders
and utilizing advanced techniques,
we are often able to
not only save a person’s life
but also their functionality,
even if more time has
passed than ideal from first
symptom,” explained Dr.
Aamir Badruddin, neuroendovascular
interventionalist
at the Presence Neuroscience
Institute.
A nationally accredited
physical medicine and rehabilitation
unit, with additional
CARF accreditation for specialty
stroke rehabilitation,
has expanded at Presence
Saint Joseph Medical Center.
Featuring private patient
rooms and state-of-the-art
equipment, the unit provides
daily intensive therapy for patients
and posts high return to
mobility and function results.
The institute’s team of experts
also collaborates to find
the most appropriate treatments
for tumors, aneurysms
and other brain disorders, as
well as treating the full range
of spine treatment options.
Advanced technology
— including 3D imaging,
measurement and real-time
mapping — allow extraordinary
accuracy in diagnosis
and treatment.
“Our diagnostic neurology
lab, neuro intensive care unit
and CARF-accredited inpatient
rehab, outpatient physical
therapy and Neuro Day
rehab enable us to provide
comprehensive and complete
continuum of care,”
according to Dr. Tamir Hersonskey,
a neurosurgeon and
medical director.
Dryer Vent
Cleaning
Don't Let Your
Dryer Start A Fire!
! WARNING !
If your dryer takes longer than one
cycle to dry your clothes, then you
may have a fire hazard in your vent.
Installation Alteration Repair
AFTER
New Lenox-based
business works to make
clothes dryers safer
Hidden buildup in clothes
dryer vent is a fire hazard
Staff Report
Most people know they need to clean out
their dryer lint tray between each cycle, but
what lurks behind the wall is just as important
for safety and avoiding fire traps. Lint
is the villain – lint that has been allowed to
build up and linger too long in the dryer exhaust
vent.
It is estimated by the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission and the U.S. Fire
Administration that 15,500 fires associated
with clothes dryers occur annually. These
fires account for an average of 20 deaths,
370 injuries and more than $88 million in
property damage. “Failure to clean the dryer
vent” was the leading factor cited in the U.S.
according to the Fire Administration reports.
Joe Enzenberger, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard,
opened his New Lenox-based business
in 2009 and knows all about these kinds
of dangers.
“It is something very few people know
about or think about,” said Enzenberger,
whose company specializes in dryer vent
cleaning, repair, alteration and installation.
“It is the leading cause of dryer fires.”
Lint accumulation also can cause dryers
to stop working or to work inefficiently. A
dryer vent clogged with lint can add as much
as $18 to $24 per month to energy costs.
“Improper venting causes problems, as
well,” he said. “The dryer exhaust duct and
connections should be made of rigid metal
or semi-rigid metal and secured with metal
heat-resistant tape rather than duct tape. I
often find plastic or foil accordion-type material,
which can easily trap lint and is more
susceptible to kinks and crushing.”
Warning signs include: clothes are taking
more than one cycle to dry, especially jeans
and towels; no lint visible on lint screen; dryer
repeatedly stops during a cycle; clothes
have moldy smell after dry cycle; clothes are
very hot after a dry cycle; the top of the dryer
is hot to the touch while running; there’s excess
lint left in clothing.
“This has been a consumer education process,
but it’s hard to get the word out,” Enzenberger
said. “Most don’t call until they
have a serious problem with their dryer.”
He suggests people treat clothes dryers as
a household item in need of regular maintenance.
Consumers can protect dryer performance
and promote safety by cleaning
the lint screen between each use, ensuring
the connection between the dryer and wall
is made of compliant material and remains
un-kinked, and having the dryer exhaust
duct cleaned regularly. Dryer manufacturers
recommend inspection and cleaning at
least annually.
The holiday season is a great time to have
an inspection and cleaning of clothes dryers
and dryer vent systems.
Atrium Family Dental
welcomes new patients
Staff Report
Do you See
this Ad?
What does your oral
health and overall health
have in common?
The answer is — everything.
This is the main point
Dr. Shane Sudman and his
knowledgeable team at Atrium
Family Dental push to
get through to their patients.
An article posted this year
on Colgate’s Oral and Dental
Health Resource Center
states, “The truth is that if
you don’t take proper care of
your teeth, you could face far
more serious consequences
than a simple toothache or
some unsightly stains.”
The article goes on to
mention the various types
of conditions that can result
from poor oral health, including
cardiovascular disease,
dementia, respiratory
infections and diabetic complications.
Atrium Family Dental,
1938 E. Lincoln Highway
in New Lenox, provides
comprehensive dental care
in a comfortable setting to
ensure each patient has a
healthy mouth for the duration
of their lifetimes.
A patient review from
www.NationalDentalReviews.org
reinforces what
the Atrium Family Dental
team stands for,
“Dr. Sudman is an excellent
dentist who exemplifies
a great deal of pride in assuring
his patients receive the
absolute best level of care
possible. He has a wonderful
and friendly staff that make
you feel right at home in a
warm office atmosphere.”
In their current New Patient
Special, Atrium Family
Dental offers an exam, X-
rays, teeth cleaning and oral
cancer screening (normally
valued at $260) for $99.
Sudman also offers free consultations
to review the current
health of one’s mouth
and gives his professional
diagnosis for treatment necessary
to get patients back
to normal.
Beyer Chiropractic Center uses
pain management treatment
for peripheral neuropathy
Staff Report
Beyer Chiropractic Center
is improving peripheral
neuropathy patient care with
the addition of Horizontal
Micro-Current Therapy care
program. The treatment caters
to individuals suffering
from peripheral neuropathy
by utilizing micro-current
pulses to repair and regenerate
damaged nerve endings.
“We are so excited to be
expanding our capabilities,”
said Dr. Stephen Beyer.
“This technology will allow
us to help patients find relief
while increasing mobility
and control of their nervous
systems. It will also reduce
the need for harmful narcotics
with serious side effects.”
Peripheral neuropathy is
a common disease that describes
damage to the peripheral
nervous system, which
transmits information from
the brain and spinal cord to
every other part of the body.
It is estimated that upwards
of 20 million Americans suffer
from this illness.
Common symptoms of
this condition include temporary
numbness, tingling
and pricking sensations, sensitivity
to touch, or muscle
weakness. Others may suffer
more extreme symptoms,
including burning pain (especially
at night), muscle
wasting, paralysis, or organ
or gland dysfunction.
The horizontal therapy
device is distinctly unique,
unlike anodyne or any other
therapy used for peripheral
neuropathy.
“There are hundreds of
medical electro-pulse machines
in use in the medical
field, but no other device
can stimulate both electrically
and biochemically,”
Beyer said. “Dying peripheral
nerves need to be revived
and then treated to
regenerate for patients to see
true results.”
In addition to reviving
the nerves, other benefits
include reduced pain and
inflammation (without additional
drugs or medication),
increase of blood flow allowing
the nerves to receive
more nutrients and improved
metabolism and healing.
The treatment plan consists
of a series of horizontal
therapy sessions lasting
approximately 45 minutes
each. The actual number of
sessions will be dependent
upon progressiveness of the
patient’s condition.
“We are healing nerves —
sick dying nerves that have
stopped firing electrically,”
Beyer said. “We aren’t treating
symptoms; we are fixing
the problems causing the
symptoms. There is a lifechanging
difference in that,
and it is one we are excited
to bring to the community.”
The center, in addition to
chiropractic care, is known
for its success in treating
chronic conditions including
thyroid issues, irritable
bowel syndrome and peripheral
neuropathy. For persons
interested in learning more
about peripheral neuropathy
conditions and treatment options,
PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY
If you suffer from a single one of these torturous symptoms - Numbness tingling, burning or sharp nerve pain -
this may be the most important information you’ve read in your life!
“I Want To Help You Regain The
Feeling In Your Hands And Feet!”
-- Dr. Stephen Beyer
Neuropathy affects every part of your life -
walking, sitting, sleeping and so much more.
If you have tried “everything” without getting
the lasting results you want then may be a
candidate for our program.
There is a simple reason that other
treatments fail - because they don’t
heal the damaged nerves.
There is a tremendous difference in covering
up your symptoms and fixing the underlying
problem. Why settle for “band-aid care” when
you could potentially correct the problem?
The single most important solution
to your neuropathy was 3 years in the
making...
Finally this program is available to you.
A powerful combination of Functional
Neurology and Functional Medicine that
packs a powerful punch against neuropathy.
How does it work? By stimulating the
nerves and supporting their need for
fuel and activation.
My patients know the insider’s secrets to
recovery. They have already received their
individualized Neuropathy Recovery Program
and are having amazing results.
You see, Beyer Chiropractic Center is one
of only a few clinics in the Chicagoland area
to have the Hako Med® Horizontal® Electrotherapty
technology in the Chicagoland area.
Come learn how this therapy, as part of our
comprehensive Neuropathy Recovery Program,
can give you the relief from neuropathy that
you have been looking for.
Let me say this, I am not promising that I
can cure everyone. I don’t even know if you
qualify for the Neuropathy Recovery Program,
that is yet to be determined and requires a
proper history and examination.
I know that you have been promised the
moon and nobody has delivered the goods.
That’s why I am offering you a risk-free
introduction to this program.
For a limited time I am offering the
first two visits for only $50 if you
schedule by January 19, 2015.
Here is what you get:
• A thorough case history where I listen to
your concerns, goals, and dreams for a
better future.
• Toronto Qualification Exam - scores how
bad your neuropathy is and what kind
(large or small nerve fiber disease)
• A thorough review of your history and any
previous medical tests you forward.
• My analysis and expertise in evaluating
and helping neuropathy patients from a
functional perspective
You will also receive my latest Nuropathy
Recovery Report detailing every aspect of this
unique clinically proven treatment program.
Correct diagnosis + correct treatment
= Best Results possible and relief.
Why hasn’t your doctor told you about this
approach? Because it doesn’t fit into the model
of giving a medication to cover up the problem.
This is a functional approach to correct the
issue - not temporarily cover up your pain.
Here’s What To Do
The offer is only good until January 19,
2015. Call today 815-469-8500 and we can get
you scheduled for your consultation and exam.
Store goes nutty for health
Mokena speciality
store marks 12
years in business
Staff Report
Health Nutz Natural
Foods began its 12th year in
December of 2014. Located
at 19844 LaGrange Road in
the Mokena Towns Square
Plaza, the store is open from
10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday
through Friday and from 10
a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday.
The store is owned by sisters
Jann Morlan and Gail
Lane, who decided to open a
health food store after Jann’s
previous job was eliminated.
The sisters have always had
a penchant for natural healing
and discovered (sometimes
from their customers)
that there is a natural remedy
for almost every ailment.
In addition to vitamins and
supplemnts, the store carries
gluten-free foods, pastured
chicken eggs, body care,
teas, cleaning products, essential
oils, local and other
honey and has a children’s
department.
One might find Health
Nutz busiest on the third
Wednesday of the month
when “Wacky Wednesday”
offers customers 20 percent
off in-stock vitamins and
supplements. In addition to
stock items, they are always
willing to try to order special
items for customers.
Behind the checkout counter
at Health Nutz Natural
Foods is a chart with names
and numbers documenting
the improving cholesterol
levels of regular customers.
The charted individuals
have all been taking supplements
with guggul and red
yeast rice, and the results are
impressive.
Such outcomes are what
keep shoppers returning to
the tidy 1,300-square-foot
Mokena store, said Morlan,
a lifelong New Lenox
resident who owns and operates
the shop with her sister
Gail Lane.
“There really is something
to help just about anything,”
Morlan said standing among
the store’s aisles of products
ranging from fish oils and
free-range eggs to vitamins
and locally harvested honey.
Morlan has an encyclopedic
knowledge of her store’s
inventory — what treats
what, alternatives, complimentary
items, prices per
unit — but it wasn’t always
that way.
Health Nutz was started
after Morlan’s position at
a downtown law firm was
eliminated.
She had always had an
interest in natural healing
methods and had a health
foods expert in the family,
her cousin Mark, who owns
Seeds of Change Natural
Food in LaSalle.
With his help, the family
effort got off the ground and
hasn’t looked back since.
“It doesn’t seem possible
that’s it been 10 years,”
Morlan said. “It’s exciting.”
With a decade’s experience
on the books, Morlan’s
enjoying life in the
health foods business more
than ever.
“I learn something new
in here every day, so I love
that,” she said. “I love it. I
really do.”
the store at (708) 479-7578.
Dr. Ed Beyer
explains the troubles
with losing weight
Staff Report
“Many people start
weight-loss programs with
the best of intentions, only
to give up due to lack of energy,
inability to resist the
food ‘cravings’ that sabotage
weight loss, or, even worse,
eating what are supposed to
be the ‘right’ foods when in
actuality they are the wrong
foods for them,” Dr. Ed
Beyer said. “Even worse is
to lose the weight initially,
only to gain it right back. It
is possible that these people
start diet/exercise programs
while still suffering from
metabolic imbalances and
chronic conditions they may
not even know they have.”
Beyer holds monthly informational
workshops to
explain the common metabolic
problems people have
that prevent them from successfully
and permanently
losing fat and gaining energy.
He explains how these issues
can be fixed using a wholebody
approach, also known
as functional medicine.
Some of the main issues
people have that prevent
them from living their best
life include:
• Unstable (too high
and too low) blood sugar/
Type 2 diabetes/metabolic
syndrome
• Reactive hypoglycemia
• Adrenal gland fatigue
• Undetected/poor thyroid
function
• Undetected anemia
(one cannot exercise well
if he or she is not getting
enough oxygen)
• Hormone imbalances
and why one has them and
how to fix them, especially
estrogen/progesterone imbalances
in females
• Autoimmune conditions
that go undiagnosed
Why liver function is crucial
• Food sensitivities: Are
you eating something that
your immune system is mistakenly
attacking?
• Do you have a hidden infection
that is stressing your
body and preventing you
from losing weight?
“In order to manage your
health you need to look at
the causes of the problem
... not just the symptoms,”
Beyer said. “This means
proper testing.”
Beyer has been in practice
in Tinley Park for more
than 25 years. He has served
more than 11,000 patients in
the Chicago area since 1988.
He resolved to dedicate his
practice to the treatment of
chronic conditions — such
as unexplained weight gain,
autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia
and thyroid dysfunction
that were not being
successfully treated with the
traditional therapies. To do
this, Beyer has logged hundreds
of hours in postgraduate
study of functional blood
chemistry analysis, and metabolic
testing and treatment.
Beyer is currently a boardeligible
diplomat in chiropractic
neurology with the
Carrick Institute for Graduate
Studies.
Beyer said he is a big believer
in education and the
notion that knowledge is
power. With this attitude,
he sets out to educate his
patients and people in the
community that there is an
alternative approach to treating
chronic conditions.
Sticking with that
New Year’s resolution
Danny Ciamprone,
Contributing Editor
Thanksgiving to New
Year’s Eve can be an endless
blitz of food platters, sweets
and alcohol as holiday gettogethers
and office parties
take the forefront.
So for several, New Year’s
Day is not just the start of
a new year, but a change in
lifestyle as resolutions are
made to end the debauchery,
improve their overall fitness
and restock the kitchen with
fruits and vegetables rather
than sugary delights.
But it’s no surprise that
after a few weeks, even
days, will power starts to
fade and some return to their
old ways.
“I think the biggest frustration
I see from people when
they start a New Year’s resolution
with fitness is when they
start at it really strong ... they
say I’m going to work out 5-6
days a week and I’m going to
eat really clean,” said Gina
Marietti, owner and trainer
at SPINclub Mokena.”Then
they do that for a few weeks,
then the scale doesn’t move,
then they get frustrated and
then they quit.”
Mary Signorelli, manager
of Fit After 50, in Mokena,
said she sees a similar progression
with some who
make New Year’s resolutions
in that they make the
goal too large to accomplish,
then get discouraged when it
isn’t achieved.
Signorelli said part of
the problem too is that in
January, because of the indulgence
associated with
the major holidays from
November-December, several
are starting their goals
when they are 8 or 9 pounds
heavier than normal. Signorelli
recommended starting
slow, such as trying to get
120-200 minutes a week devoted
to getting one’s heart
stronger, such as running or
riding a bike.
“[A resolution] doesn’t
have to be I’m going to
lose 30 pounds; it’s just too
big, and then they get down
about it,” Signorelli said.
“Set something that’s reasonable,
something that’s
doable and something that’s
fun. If it’s not partially fun
they’re not going to bother.”
Both Signorelli and Marietti
said they see a surge
at their exercise facilities
around January with new
sign-ups and both encourage
small goals for progression
while keeping motivation at
a high level. One of the ways
that’s done at Fit After 50,
Signorelli said, is by following
up with new attendees
about how they’re doing, because
for several, the major
problem is sticking to a routine
as distractions and stress
accumulate on a daily basis.
“This piece that seems to
them to be optional it really
isn’t,” she said of keeping up
with an exercise routine. “It
really isn’t optional and it’s
a very hard thing to say to
somebody who’s exhausted
from a 12 hour day, ‘Hey,
can you try to get in because
all you really did was sit all
day. You need to move.’”
Marietti said motivation is
key, but it’s also about being
realistic. She said when one
starts to exercise it’s about
getting their body moving
again – something that
may be a foreign concept to
some. It also takes time for
results as she said it’s going
to take 6-10 weeks to start
seeing changes.
“I always tell my clients,
you didn’t gain 15 pounds in
six weeks so you shouldn’t
expect to take it off in six
weeks,” she said. “It’s a slow
process and it’s just like anything
else, you just have to
keep working on it. The results
will come, but they’re
not going to come over night.”
SPINclub Mokena and Fit
After 50 offer several group
classes, and both Marietti
and Signorelli said group
exercise has become popular
as participants make friendships
and stay motivated
with others.
It also makes exercise fun.
“The most amazing thing
is, if you can keep someone’s
energy level and enthusiasm
for the project
they just took on, which is
themselves, you can just tell
them, ‘Look what you did,’”
Signorelli said.
When it comes to dieting,
the same goals should be
taken as with exercise in that
one should start slow and set
goals along the way. Marietti
said everyone has a weakness
in their diet, whether
it’s too much salt, sugar or
just eating in excess.
Instead of cutting out
foods completely at first,
ease into change. One example
she used was if you’re
drinking six diet soft drinks
a day, don’t try and stop all
together, rather wean yourself
off of it by decreasing
the amount each day.
Another problem Marietti
hears is that some view setting
aside time to exercise
as being selfish in that they
think they should be doing
more for their family and
focusing less on themselves.
“You being healthy and
feeling fit, feeling good and
being happy and motivating
for your children or your
spouse ... you’re doing them
a great favor also because
you’re bettering yourself,”
Marietti said.

Discover a Healthier,
Happier You
If excess weight is limiting your life, weight loss surgery may be right for you.
eight loss surgery is a powerful tool for helping people get
their health back,” confirms Christopher Joyce, MD, FACS,
FASMBS, Medical Director of BMI Surgery at Silver Cross
Hospital. Silver Cross is a seven-time national “100 Top
Hospitals” honoree and is Will County’s only American Society for
Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
Everything you’ll need to succeed is in one place: pre-surgical counseling, diet and exercise instruction,
state-of-the-art surgical and post-surgical facilities, peer support, and resources to help you maintain your
healthier lifestyle.
Select Procedures
“We offer all surgical options, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric banding with the LAP-BAND® and
REALIZE® systems, gastric sleeve, and revisional bariatric procedures,” describes Dr. Joyce.
“While our surgeries have high safety standards, patients need to be aware that any surgery has risks,” he
reminds. “We help patients assess those risks when considering the benefits of better health.
“Surgery is a tool to help speed your weight loss,” he adds, “but it’s the program you choose that makes that tool
work best.”
He recommends choosing a multidisciplinary Center of Excellence with a successful track record and a high
volume of patients: “Surgeons at such Centers are more experienced and better able to anticipate and respond to
patients’ unique surgical needs. That translates into better outcomes.”
Donna Morris is slim and healthy 11 years after her
bariatric surgery performed by Dr. Christopher Joyce.
Once obese at 226 pounds, this mom has kept most of
the weight off. After losing 100 pounds, her high blood
pressure, asthma and back pain are completely gone.
And she has more energy than ever before.
Donna was the first patient to have laparoscopic
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at Silver Cross in 2003.
Gastric bypass is considered the “gold standard” of
bariatric surgery because it has the highest weight loss
success rate. Patients at Silver Cross lose an average
of 81% of their excess weight 12 to 18 months after
surgery. Five years after the surgery, the average
weight loss remains high at 78% indicating the durability
of the surgery.
She contributes her long-term weight loss to the
support she still receives from Dr. Joyce and his team,
regular exercise, and healthy food choices.
Time to play ‘vein myth or fact’ with Midwest Vein Center
Dr. Barbara Terpstra
Varicose veins are
purely hereditary
Myth! While one does
have a higher chance of
developing varicose veins
if they run in the family,
one’s lifestyle also determines
risk for developing
varicose veins. How can
one reduce this risk? Think
circulation! Long periods
of sitting or standing
can inhibit blood flow, so
try and keep blood pumping
throughout the day.
Whether one sits at a desk
or stand for hours at a time,
make sure to take breaks
and move around. Exercise
is another way to increase
circulation and reduce
the chance of developing
vein disease.
Varicose veins can
affect health
Fact! Varicose veins are
caused when the valves
in veins that direct blood
flow malfunction. Instead
of pushing blood through
a vein in one direction, the
valves loosen and blood
pools by being pushed back
and forth. This pooling of
blood affects circulation and
can cause you the feelings of
pressure, tiredness and pain
in one’s legs.
Insurance often covers
varicose vein procedures
Fact! Most insurances
cover varicose veins procedures,
as they are considered
more medical than cosmetic.
At Midwest Vein Center,
there is an insurance team
to help patients through the
filing process. Each insurance
carrier is different, and
at Midwest Vein Center, the
goal is to make sure patients
know how much a procedure
is going to cost. For some
people, there is an out-ofpocket
cost beyond what
their insurances providers
cover. For other people,
health insurance covers their
procedures at 100 percent.
Our Specialized Team of Physicians
About the author
Dr. Barbara Terpstra is a board-certified
phlebologist and is the medical director of
the Midwest Vein Center in Orland Park.
She and her staff treat varicose and spider
veins with the latest technology and offer
the best in patient care. She is a proud mother
of two young children. In her free time,
Terpstra
she enjoys gardening and cooking. She is
also a member of the Northwest Indiana Choir. To see patient
Varicose vein procedures
involve vein stripping
Myth! Vein stripping is a
procedure of the past. Thirty
years ago, having veins
treated meant undergoing a
highly invasive procedure.
Patients had to be placed
under anesthesia, and the recovery
time involved being
bedridden for weeks. Things
have changed. Today’s varicose
vein procedures involve
a local anesthetic and a laser;
patients can be in and out of
the procedure in an hour an
drive themselves home, even
go to work the next day.
Building a home gym is simple
Jon DePaolis,
Contributing Editor
The holidays are going to
be over before you know it,
and when that happens, so
will the following.
Mark my words, you will be
sitting on your couch, watching
TV and a commercial
for Bowflex Revolution or
P90X or something else will
air. You, not wanting to feel
shamed while trying to catch
up on an episode of “Biggest
Loser,” will reach for the remote
(groaning while your
body forces some exertion).
I know this feeling, because
I have experienced it.
I’m sure some of you out
there have, as well.
Guess what? It’s time to
invest in a plan that will not
only get you healthier but
also get you fitter.
No, I’m not talking a
membership to a major gym.
I’m thinking you need a
passport to somewhere that
knows what you like and
who you are — a home gym.
But before you go and waste
hundreds on a gym or fitness
structure that ends up going
unused 11 months out of the
year, let’s talk, OK?
The key is knowing what
you’re seeking. If it is to
lose a few pounds in the
midsection, you may want
more of a cardio or aerobic
setup. If you’re looking to
put on muscle in your upper
and lower body, you will
likely need free weights,
workout stations and other
such equipment.
But once you know what
you’re looking to do, finding
some simple gear should
be relatively easy. We talked
with Michael Shaffern, a retired
professional wrestler
and health/fitness expert,
and here are some of his tips.
Free weights
This is the foundation of
any home gym. Free weights
— which come in a variety
of shapes, sizes and pounds
— are used in virtually every
single major fitness DVD.
These also are easy to
find at most major retailers,
including Dick’s Sporting
Goods and Sports Authority.
Shaffern said some dumbbells
are now made to so that
users can adjust the weight
from as little as 10 pounds to
as much as 50 pounds.
“I have a set of those, and
it’s helpful to have a set of
those at the house,” he said.
Chin-up bar
For those looking to
build strength in their arms
and back, a chin-up bar is
a necessity.
While these can be sold
as additions to larger pieces
of equipment, some chin-up
bars are sold separately and
can be hung on a door frame.
“Pullups are one of the
most essential workouts you
can do with your own body
weight,” Shaffern said. “It’s
really an essential exercise
for your back, arms, shoulders.
It kind of touches on
everything.”
He said pushups, pullups
and other exercises in which
the person is using his or her
body weight are good for
home fitness.
Resistance bands
Quickly becoming a popular
method of getting fit,
these bands can simulate a
variety of different weights,
depending on the length and
thickness of the strap.
They also are easy to set
up and pack away.
“If you’re not looking to
have dumbbells [lying] around
your living room, you can get
resistance bands,” Shaffern
said. “They are a lot easier to
store, and they do come with
different amounts of resistance
for curls, triceps.”
Nutrition
It’s a word that most people
dread, but the truth is
that without a good diet, no
amount of work will magically
fix your problems.
“Dieting, by far, is the
most important thing, no
matter what you’re trying
to do,” Shaffern said. “If
you are trying to get lean, if
you’re eating like garbage,
it’s not going to happen. You
have to eat a ton of vegetables,
some fruit, a lot of lean
proteins — chicken, fish. If
you’re trying to add more
muscle, which is possible to
do at home, you’re going to
want to take in more protein,
more carbs; not starchy potato
carbs, but brown rice,
quinoa — stuff that fuels
your body and that has the
nutrients and minerals that
will help you grow.”
Plan ahead
Listen, everyone needs
a plan. You cannot expect
to shed weight without understanding
what exercise
or what routine does what.
If you were trying to get
healthy, would you just assume
you knew which foods
were appropriate for a certain
diet?
“The beautiful thing in
this day of the Internet is that
there are a billion things you
can check out and see what
they are comfortable with,”
Shaffern said. “It’s pretty
easy to do some research.
“My recommendation almost
to anyone would be to
check out any program by
Beachbody. It is the creators
of P90X and INSANITY.”
He said a great thing about
those programs is that you
can track how you have progressed
from Day 1 to the
end of the program.
“People develop differently
and hit goals differently,”
he said.
