at premises in Maidenhead in 1962; the modern, high 

specification machines of today bear little resemblance to

Choosing the right lawnmower can seem 

daunting - but it needn’t be difficult if you 

follow this guide. 

1 How large is your lawn? 

The first thing to consider is the size of your garden. Is it small, medium, large or 

extra large? If we use a tennis court as a reference point, small gardens are around 

half a tennis court, medium up to three quarters and large up to one and a half. 

Extra large gardens are half an acre or more and a ride-on mower would be a 

more appropriate choice. 

2 Mower type 

Depending on the size of your garden you may have a choice of power source. 

Mains electric mowers are quiet, lightweight and easy to use; they are ideal for 

smaller gardens. Cordless mowers are an increasingly popular choice and with 

advances in battery technology are now able to cut larger lawns. Petrol engine 

mowers are the most popular choice for larger areas as they are more powerful, 

are not restricted by a cable and can operate for long periods of time. Modern 

petrol engines are easy to start and on some you just have to turn a key.

3 Mulching magic! 

Mowers with 4 wheels are highly manoeuvrable and give an excellent finish 

on all types of lawn. Many also have the option of fitting a mulching plug to 

mulch the grass clippings; this involves cutting the grass clippings into extra 

fine particles and recycling them back into the turf, this not only fertilizes the 

lawn but also means you don’t have to keep stopping to empty the collector. 

Mulching isn’t actually magic, although it may feel like it, but it is a great 

feature saving you both time cutting your lawn and money buying lawn feed. 

4 Classic stripes 

Nothing really finishes a fine lawn better than row after row of beautiful stripes. 

To achieve this classic striped finish you’ll need a machine with a rear roller. 

A rear roller also has the benefit of making cutting along lawn edges easier. 

5 Cutting width 

The wider the cutting width of the mower you use then the quicker you will cut 

your grass. For example, if your lawn is 20 metres wide then you will have to go 

up and down it around 38 times with a 53cm mower compared to 49 times with 

a 41cm mower. The 53cm mower will also have a larger grass collector, so unless 

you are mulching the grass, you will also have to stop less often to empty the grass 

collector. So the 53cm mower will be around 30% quicker to cut your grass. 

The larger mower will however be heavier and harder to turn and manoeuvre 

around obstacles as well as being more expensive. 

6 To push or not to push? 

Hand propelled machines have to be pushed to make them move forward, the 

motor or engine’s sole function is to drive the cutter blade. Self propelled models 

have a transmission so they require less effort to use; just engage the drive and the 

mower will move forward. Some self propelled models also have a variable speed 

control, so you can adjust the speed to best suit your own pace or the conditions. 

7 Material matters 

The chassis, or cutter deck, may be made of polypropylene, steel with a powder 

coated paint finish, or hybrid galvanised steel/aluminium. It houses the blade and 

determines the working width, from 34cm to 53cm. Polyproylene is lightweight 

and maintenance free. Steel is more robust and hard wearing. Galvanised steel 

has a zinc coating to prevent rust. Aluminium does not rust but has to be forged 

rather than pressed and this can limit deck shape.

A step up from our entry level petrol machines, these mowers have the 

benefit of a steel deck, wider 41cm cutting width, along with a larger 60 

litre grass bag (complete with a handy bag full indicator). 

Both of these powder coated models also have a mulching plug included 

– to mulch instead of collect your grass clippings, simply insert the 

mulching plug into the collection chute to finely cut the grass clippings

HW531 PD 

The rugged HW531 PD is a very popular high specification self 

propelled mower with a powerful Mountfield ST55 160cc OHV engine. 

With a 53cm cutting width and large rear wheels this mower will make 

swift work of large uneven lawns. 

Sometimes you may want to leave your grass longer than usual, this 

high wheel mower allows you to do this but still cuts low enough for 

normal lawn maintenance. The side discharge chute is ideal when you 

quickly want to cut the grass and not collect or mulch the clippings. 

The extra deep deck combined with the front comb mean superb 

cutting and collecting performance. A bag full indicator shows when 

the large 70 litre collector needs emptying.

For the larger lawn the SP535 HW & SP535 HW V are excellent 

choices. With a robust steel chassis these machines are powered by 

Honda OHC engines with the SP535 HW having the 160cc version and 

the SP535 HW V having the larger 190cc engine. Both models have 

power driven large diameter rear wheels and will handle rougher ground 

with ease. The SP535 HW V also has the benefit of variable speed 

transmission. 

Cutting height is easily adjusted using a single lever and a large 70 litre 

grass collector has an indicator to show when the bag is full. 

Power drive to the rear wheels will take the effort out of cutting your 

grass, especially on sloping lawns. A skid plate is fitted at the front of 

the cutter deck – this ensures the best possible finish to the lawn and 

minimises the risk of scalping on uneven surfaces.

The SP555 V is our flagship 4 wheel walk behind lawnmower, packed 

with features and innovations that help to make it the ultimate walk 

behind lawnmower. 

The 190cc Honda engine provides plenty of power to deal with the 

toughest of conditions and a heavy duty aluminium cone clutch 

transmission has infinitely variable forward speeds between 3 - 4.4km/h 

allowing you to cut at a pace that suits you and the conditions. 

The chassis is a unique hybrid design with a galvanised and powder 

coated deep drawn pressed steel cutting chamber with a J section lip for 

increased stiffness, and the rigidity of a cast aluminium conveyor at the rear 

of the machine incorporating the lower handlebar mountings. The conveyor 

is the perfect shape to maximise air flow which is further enhanced by fins 

moulded into the anti-scalp plate at the front of the mower. 

The first cutting edge of the patented Twinclip blade reduces the initial 

length of the grass with the second cutting edge reducing the finished 

length down to the desired height (see page 32 for more info). The extra 

finely cut clippings are then blown into the 70 litre collector, resulting in a 

noticeable increase in collecting performance of around 20%. Alternatively 

if you fit the included mulching plug the Twinclip blade produces a mulching 

finish that is second to none. 

The vibration control system isolates vibrations, meaning a more 

comfortable, less tiring working experience and the cutting height is 

easily adjusted with a well balanced single lever. 

Cleaning after use is facilitated using a hose connection fitted to the chassis. 

The robust handle bars are easily adjusted to a choice of 3 positions with 

a simple one motion click and fold over the engine for ease of storage.

The SP505R V and SP555R V are our new top of the range 

premium roller mowers. These top of the range roller mowers 

have many innovative features, all designed to deliver a truly

areas of grass down to size. A twin cylinder Briggs & Stratton 

engine powering an infinitely variable hydrostatic transmission 

delivers smooth and controllable drive to the rear wheels. 

Controls are ergonomically designed and placed within easy 

reach of the operator. A fully adjustable seat and illuminated 

diagnostic display add to the driving experience. 

An audible alarm notifies the operator when the collector is

Mulching grass is a great feature as it saves so much time. 

It can be more than 30% quicker as there is no stopping work

Mulching the grass allows the clippings to be recycled, 

improving the soil as they decompose forming a natural 

fertiliser high in potash and nitrogen. You will notice a marked 

improvement in your grass as this fertiliser takes effect over

You may well ask “Will I see the mulched grass?” The answer 

is “No!” Mulched clippings are blown down into the turf and

grass clippings. Instead of discharging clippings 

into a collector these mulching tractors retain 

them beneath the cutter deck to be cut and 

re-cut into small particles which are blown down 

into the lawn where they decompose and return 

valuable nutrients to the soil. Mow your grass on

and large 20 inch rear wheels. You can confidently use these

paddocks, orchards and wild flower meadows. 

Both models have powerful Briggs & Stratton twin cylinder 

engines providing plenty of power to handle tough 

conditions. The large 15 litre fuel tank gives the freedom to

The 2243H-SD has a reinforced 108cm cutting deck with two

long for successful mulching. A mulching plug and set of 

mulching blades are also included to allow the efficient
