THE COMMUNITY, THE SCHOOL, AND YOU
I have now been a part of the Potosi community for over 17 years. I have had 2 children
attend school here from 1 st grade/K through graduation, grow up here, and develop
friends in the area. In that time I have been involved in scouting, Lions Club, and
supported other area interests.
Over that time I have seen the community come together to work with the DNR, Corps of
engineers, etc. to plan a recreational update called the "Point Project" (which is still a
project in waiting) and the massive undertaking of special people to bring the Brewery
Project to a successful beginning (It is happening). Sadly I, and you, have watched a
clinic come & go (For some come, go, come & go!) and have seen the grocery store close
(Thanks to the Brunners/Kittoes for serving the community for as long as they could!).
This is not to mention many other enterprises that have started and ended. I can think of
antique shops, gift shops, flower shops, restaurants, and similar enterprises that have
attempted to survive. I can also think of some that have started and continue such as
Main Street Fine Art and Frame, The Quilt Shop, Main Street Pizza, and others. And
now the "Holiday Gardens" will open later this year to complement the Brewery Project.
The 2 by 2 animal campus is projected to be a future draw to this community. We also
have the rental cabins to provide lodging. Maybe other lodging options will also develop.
OK, where am I going with this? Whether it is the school or a business, we depend upon
the community for our survival. AND the community depends upon businesses and
schools for its survival. So long as we support the businesses in town, they will survive.
When we do not, they may be lost. It is our choice. The same is true for the school.
With a strong and well-supported school, people will come to live in our community,
increasing our tax base, and increasing the resources of the community. The stronger the
community is and the stronger the school is… Then the higher the tax base can be, which
can lead to lower taxes even with adequate school funding. IT IS OUR CHOICE to
maintain businesses in town, to make our community strong, and to strengthen our
schools.
THIS ALL GOES HAND-IN-HAND! AS THE SAYING GOES,
"BUILD IT & THEY WILL COME!"
Dr. Steve Lozeau, District Administrator
Bethany Glasson received an Honorable Mention Award and
$100 for her essay with the Annual Wisconsin Labor history
Essay Contest. The contest is affiliated with the State Historical
Society of Wisconsin. Only eight students throughout the state
of Wisconsin were selected as winners. Awards were furnished
by dozens of labor unions and others in Wisconsin. As a
recipient of an award, Bethany has been invited to attend the
26th Annual Conference of the Wisconsin Labor History Society.

School District on our home page?
To get to the Potosi Home page, use the following address >www.potosisd.k12.wi.us< and click
a regular basis.
I-Safe – Through out this school year I have been highlighting articles on Internet Safety in
CAST. After attending a workshop and listening to the many Internet dangers that exist for our
young students, I feel that this is important. At Potosi School we use multiple filters and a
firewall to buffer against unwanted or inappropriate information. I encourage you to check out
the I-Safe web site at >www.isafe.org< and click on quick links for additional information for
your student’s protection.
Speaking of Sports – Congratulations to all the athletic teams of Potosi. Most recently, the Co-
Conference Championship of our girl’s basketball team and coach of the year – Darby Blakley. It
is terrific to see such great parental/community support for all of our teams. We are currently
enjoying the rewards of this support. I also appreciate the fan sportsmanship that has been
exhibited, especially at girl’s regional final – makes me proud to be in the stands. Good luck to
the softball and baseball teams on their upcoming season – see you at the game.
Connecting with Kids – Remember as a kid, that favorite teacher that made the “connection”
with you? Chances are everyone has and owes much to that teacher. I have the pleasure of seeing
teachers connect with kids on a daily basis – in and out of the classroom. Recently – our 5 th
graders performed a play on the civil rights segregation bus incident - “Rosa Parks”. What a
terrific learning experience outside the textbook – tell them and they forget, involve them and
they remember.
Breakfast Week – It was great meeting many of you, and having you for breakfast, I am certain
you will agree that Mrs. Elmer and the kitchen staff provides and excellent school food program -
thanks again for coming.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It’s just about time for this year’s Upper Mississippi River Festival! This year’s festival will be held at
Effigy Mounds National Monument, Marquette, Iowa. The overall theme of the festival is “Celebrating a
River of Life” and will feature stations pertinent to both aquatic resources and bluffland resources. The trip
is planned for Tuesday, May 15 th – rain or shine! The 7 th grade group will be meeting in the Biology
room Tuesday morning and we anticipate a prompt departure from school at 8:00 a.m. The festival will
conclude at 1:30 p.m. and we anticipate a timely return to school. The students will be home in plenty of
time to catch the bus – hopefully, if all goes well, they may even get to see a little of 8 th period!
I have been informed that regardless of weather conditions (notwithstanding tornado warnings/watches),
the festival will proceed as planned. Thus, please make sure that students bring rain gear and/or other
clothing appropriate for the weather on Tuesday. Warm clothing is encouraged, as it is almost always
cooler near the river! Better safe than sorry – as extra clothing can always be left on the bus. In addition,
each student is asked to bring a sack lunch and drink with h im or her. There will be no food available on
site. Coolers will be provided for the lunches/drinks. Lastly, bug spray is suggested, as students will be in
or near a woodland setting for a good percentage of the day, to include a two-mile hike.
As I want to ensure that all parents are aware of our schedule and of the need for a sack lunch and drink,
I would greatly appreciate your signing this form below and returning it with your child as early as
possible. If you should have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 763-
2161 or at hutchcrt@potosisd.k12.wi.us.
Sincerely,
Notes from the Band Room – March 2007.
Hi everyone!
There is lots of activity this time of year in the band room. We’re getting our last rehearsals in for the “Pops”
Concert, March 22 nd, 7:30 p.m. and many of the high school students are also putting the final touches on their solos
or ensembles for Solo/Ensemble Festival on March 31, in Highland. Several high school instrumentalists prepared
audition tapes and were selected to perform in the Six Rivers West District Honors Band on March 13. Those students
are pictured below:
Jon Reynolds, trumpet; Jennifer Bartels, alto saxophone; Alison Tobin, flute;
Emily Lynn, trumpet; Meagan Lord, Clarinet; Leann Imhoff, flute; and Reba Keene, clarinet.
They had two long days of rehearsals and then the performance with other student musicians from around the
league. It was quite an enriching musical experience for them to be able to play with a full group and also to learn from
another conductor. On April 12, a group of our high school band students will be performing at the Scenic Rivers
Annual Meeting in Lancaster. If you are a member of this organization and plan to attend the meeting, please stop by
and say hello. This is the same day as Parent/Teacher conferences, so I will be only available to see parents before
5:00 that day. If you would like to meet with me at another time, please feel free to call me and we’ll set up a
convenient meeting time.
Many of the high school music students are planning to travel to New York City this summer with the music
booster sponsored group. In preparation for that experience, the students have been actively fundraising. These
fundraisers have included a pasty sale, a walking taco sale, and running the middle school concession stand. We
thank all of you who have given your support for any of these activities! We truly appreciate a community that
encourages and supports all of the varied interests of our students. The trip dates are June 17 to June 22.
The Fifth Grade Band members will be performing in their very first band concert on March 22 nd. In February we
had an introductory recital where they performed for parents and friends. We had a very nice turnout that night in
support of the students and we thank you for attending our recital. They have been working hard and although we
don’t meet as often as I might like, they are making good progress on their individual instruments and I am quite proud
of each of them. Thanks very much to all of the parents for their encouragement of their student’s practice time and
participation in instrumental music.
Auditorium Fund Project
Last summer a letter was sent to Potosi Alumni informing them about an auditorium
project to improve the current facilities in the Potosi School District. We have currently
received over $21,000.00 in donations from supportive people such as you. Thank you to
all that have already donated. Donations are tax deductible and those that have already
donated should have received a statement from the Potosi School District for your tax
purposes. We are looking to you, community members of the Potosi School District, for
help.
We are also continuing to work on updating the alumni directory. Please fill out the form
at the bottom of this letter and return it to the Potosi School District, attention Deb
Bisbach. Students have been working on a cookbook to help raise money for the
auditorium fund. The book is scheduled to be completed this fall. If you would be
POTOSI BREWERY FOUNDATION, INC.
RESTORATION PROJECT
BY: SHARON BIERMAN, SECRETARY
Mission Statement of the Potosi Brewery Foundation, Inc.:
THE PURPOSE of the Potosi Brewery Foundation is to restore a historic
landmark, the Potosi Brewery site, and to reconnect the community to a
part of its heritage;
IT IS A FURTHER PURPOSE to incorporate into the restoration a National
Brewery Museum, a Potosi Brewery Transportation Museum, a restaurant, a
brewpub, and a gift shop as a self-sustaining entity for the community.
IT IS A FURTHER PURPOSE to develop this site as a tourist destination
of historic and educational interest contributing to the viability of
the community;
FINALLY, IT IS A PURPOSE to use the site as an educational center with
emphasis on the Mississippi River and the Great River Road.
The restoration of the historic brewery buildings began when a nonprofit
corporation was formed in the year 2000. It has been seven
years of planning, fundraising, writing grants, changing plans, and
more fundraising, but we are on the home stretch! By September 31,
2007, the Great River Road Interpretive Center, Potosi Brewery
Transportation Museum, and the gift shop will be open. Two phases of
construction remain with the expected completion of the project in the
summer of 2008.
While there is still much to be done, the completion is in site. We
want to say thank you to the generous people of the Potosi-Tennyson
communities for their contributions to help make this dream a reality.
you have stepped up to the plate with support of our banquets
you have baked pies, worked at and attended our brat sales
you have provided baked goods for bake sales
you have purchased memorabilia
you have given us financial support in numerous ways
Without your generosity, this restoration would not have been possible.
The restoration project has been a catalyst for economic development
and business growth. A new business has opened on Potosi’s Main
Street; a bank has been built in Tennyson; lodging units have been
built; Two By Two Animal Campus is in the development stages; main
street businesses are restoring store fronts; a motel complex is being
discussed; and a banquet hall/convention center is slated for a June
2007 opening.
We can be proud of what we have accomplished and looked to the future
with excitement for the possibilites!
