SUNY Delhi’s stature continues 

to climb, thanks to a series of 

accolades at the state, national and 

international levels. Consider these 

impressive achievements: 

Rated in the Top 50 

Baccalaureate Colleges in the 

North, according to U.S. News 

and World Report’s Guide to 

America’s Best Colleges, for the 

third consecutive year; 

Named a “Best College to 

Work For” by The Chronicle of 

Higher Education, the industry’s 

leading trade publication; 

For the first time in Delhi 

history, a faculty member was 

named a Fulbright Scholar; 

Fall enrollment reached an alltime 

record of 3,183 students; 

More than 6,000 students 

applied for enrollment, another 

Delhi record; 

Retention improved to 63.9 

percent, an increase of nearly seven 

percent since 2006; 

Rated in the Top 10 in 28

key measures of academic quality 

such as quality of instruction, 

academic advising, acquiring the 

knowledge and skills needed for a 

career, and developing mentoring 

relationships with faculty and staff. 

The Student Opinion Survey 

carries particular significance 

because it confirms that our 

students believe they are receiving 

an exceptional educational 

experience at SUNY Delhi. And 

that experience extends beyond 

the classroom. Students rated 

Delhi in the Top 10 of SUNY in 

community service, athletic and 

recreation facilities, intramural 

and recreational programs, and 

health services. 

The abundance of good news is 

tempered by New York’s ongoing 

financial crisis. SUNY Delhi has 

seen nearly $4 million cut from 

its operating budget since June 

2008. State operating support 

now accounts for only 22 percent 

of our operating budget. In the 

1980’s, it was nearly 80 percent. 

We are working diligently to close 

a $1.7 million budget deficit in 

2010–2011. 

These unprecedented budget 

reductions make it extremely 

challenging to continue to provide 

the quality educational programs 

and services that our students 

demand and deserve. SUNY Delhi 

has been very entrepreneurial in its 

decision making, which provides 

us with a strategic advantage over 

many of our competitors. We have 

launched new program initiatives 

ranging from the online RN to 

BSN to expanding the delivery 

of baccalaureate programs at 

community colleges in New York 

State. We instituted an aggressive 

campus-wide energy reduction 

program last year that saved more 

than $800,000. We have also been 

forced to increase student fees to 

cover basic operating costs. 

We are turning more frequently to 

our affiliated organizations—CADI 

and College Foundation—for 

increased student support. We 

have a dedicated core of Delhi 

alumni and friends who generously 

support our student scholarship 

programs and services through 

annual donations to the College 

Foundation. Their generosity 

is highlighted in the Honor 

Roll of Donors section of this 

Annual Report. Rising tuition 

and fees for students, combined 

with state budget cuts, make it 

imperative that we increase alumni 

involvement and support, and I 

will be actively involved in that 

effort in 2010. 

As you look through this Annual 

Report, which focuses on the 

college’s strategic objectives, I 

believe the accomplishments of 

our faculty, staff and students will 

impress you. Their achievements 

and personal investments in

SUNY Delhi’s report card continues to shine. For the third consecutive year, Delhi was ranked among 

the Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges in the North by U.S. News and World Report magazine. The ranking 

highlighted that Delhi scores well among its peers in freshmen retention rates and selectivity. Also, the 

2009 State University Student Opinion Survey placed Delhi among the SUNY elite ranking in the Top 10 

in 28 categories, including academic quality, community service, advising or mentoring relationships with 

faculty and staff, and acquiring the skills needed to move on after graduation. Other examples of academic

O’Connor with students receiving

An honors program for 

students pursuing two-year and 

four-year degrees was established. 

To be eligible, students must 

maintain a 3.3 G.P.A. or better, 

and upon graduation, they are 

recognized with an honors 

distinction on their transcripts.

Develop New Programs 

SUNY Delhi’s growth is a direct result of its strategic approach to increasing enrollment. The college 

has excelled by building on its unique academic strengths and by an institutional-wide commitment 

to increasing retention. In Fall 2009, Delhi introduced three new associate degrees: Early Childhood 

Education, Childhood Education, and Adolescence Education. These degrees are geared to students who 

wish to pursue teaching careers and expand opportunities for Liberal Arts majors. Proposals have also 

been submitted to offer bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice Studies and in Business and Technology 

Management on the Delhi campus and expand Delhi’s presence in the Capital District by delivering the 

bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Studies on the campuses of Schenectady County Community College. 

A proposal for a master’s degree in nursing has also been submitted. Delhi has pursued the development of 

other programs to expand academic, student and community services. They include: 

A 12-week summer training 

class for 20 displaced workers 

was sponsored by electrical faculty 

in cooperation with the Office 

of Business and Community 

Services and the Chenango- 

Delaware-Otsego Workforce 

Investment Board. The success 

of the course led six participants 

to enroll full-time. 

A new course, “Electric Utility 

Operations,” is the result of 

collaboration with New York State 

Electric & Gas, Delaware County 

Electrical Cooperative, Orange 

and Rockland Utilities, and Con 

Edison to meet the urgent need 

for new employees to replace 

retiring linemen. The companies 

donated and installed specialized 

equipment and contributed 

valuable staff time to provide 

hands-on training for the class’s 

first sixteen students. 

Student Life staff have 

invigorated student programming 

with new activities, including: a 

health fair; the reestablishment 

of a Delhi tradition, the College 

Chorus; a residence hall cooking 

challenge held in cooperation 

with CADI food service staff; and 

BLAST—The Bronco Leadership 

and Service Team workshops. 

Delhi’s growing online student 

population led to the counseling 

staff developing a workshop for 

faculty and staff on “Dealing with 

Counseling Concerns Raised 

by On-Line Students.” They 

also presented this cutting-edge 

workshop at the New York State 

Counseling Center Conference. 

Working with the e-Portfolio 

Committee, Computer 

Information Services has 

introduced “Career Cruising,” 

a tool for students to develop 

and post resumes online. The 

web-based tool allows students 

to showcase their experience 

online and connect with 

potential employers. 

The SUNY Delhi Alumni Association, Quandt’s Food 

Service Distributors (pictured) and an anonymous 

donor honored President Vancko’s 10 years of 

outstanding leadership with a total of $20,000 in 

gifts to the Candace and Robert Vancko Scholarship 

endowment.

III Championships. 

The State University’s Student 

Opinion Survey placed Delhi

of operation. One successful 

initiative, the Residential 

Sustainability and Recycling 

Pilot Program, was expanded to 

DuBois and O’Connor Halls in 

Fall 2009. 

Enrollment reached record levels for the second consecutive year with more applications received 

for Fall 2009. Delhi has seen a 42 percent increase in applications over the last three years. 

Contributions to Delhi’s enrollment success include:

SUNY Delhi’s exceptional 

student life program creates a 

vibrant campus environment 

that attracts students. Student 

Activities sponsored 196 

programs and events and 

received national recognition in 

Campus Activities magazine. 

The College Advancement Department teamed up 

with students to submit an entry in the U.S. News and 

World Report’s “My School Rocks” contest. The video 

helped SUNY Delhi establish a presence on YouTube 

to support student recruitment.

Riverview Townhouses, a 

70-bed apartment complex adjacent 

to the campus, opened to rave reviews 

from students and staff. 

The Merrill Family Foundation expanded 

its scholarship program to include Hospitality 

Management majors. The Foundation’s support 

of SUNY Delhi students began in 2001 with a 

gift of $5,000 for the Veterinary Science 

Technology Living Learning Community. By 

the 2009–2010 academic year, its support had 

grown to more than $100,000 annually to 

include students in Veterinary Science, 

Information Technology, and Business and 

Hospitality programs. 

More than 700 students were employed on 

campus in 2008–2009 and that number is expected 

to grow as the college puts a special emphasis on 

creating new job opportunities for students. 

The Office of Residence Life introduced a 

“SPACE” model that supports retention by helping 

The Marcus Somerstein Memorial Scholarship was established this year to 

support an academically qualified student with demonstrated financial need 

who is an emerging leader and has demonstrated a commitment to helping 

others on the campus or in the local community. The scholarship honors the 

memory of Marcus Somerstein, a hospitality major who was tragically killed 

in a car accident in 2001. The scholarship was established by his mother, 

Jasmine Somerstein-Campbell, who also pledged her ongoing support of

Increase Student 

Retention and Graduation 

SUNY Delhi’s retention rate is nearly 64 percent, a seven percent increase since 2006. The college has 

put forth six strategies for retaining students with the goal of achieving a three percent increase in the 

rate of returning students. One of the college’s strategies for improving retention includes developing 

survival tools for students who are academically at risk. Delhi is achieving this strategy through the 

use of RetentionRT, a real-time data analysis developed by Noel Levitz that provides specialized 

consulting services to help improve student retention. Other factors that have led to Delhi’s success in 

retaining students include: 

Resident Assistants develop programs dealing with 

Sustainability, Physical Wellness, Academic Success, 

Cultural Awareness and Entertainment/Recreation. 

President Candace Vancko joined Student Life 

staff to kick off a “Commuters Count” program 

by providing parking lot coffee service and free 

mugs to surprised and appreciative students. 

Other initiatives include an enhanced commuter 

lounge, weekly commuter meetings, family-friendly 

activities, and a campus-wide work group. 

A Citizenship Award was developed through 

the Office of Judicial Affairs and Community 

Development to recognize students who are good 

neighbors and citizens. 

Generate Resources 

The State University system has borne a heavy burden helping solve the state’s budget deficit, which 

makes generating resources essential to meeting the college’s strategic objectives and ensuring academic 

quality. Resource generation activities include active pursuit of state and federal grants, fundraising 

appeals to parents, faculty, staff, friends and alumni who have benefited from a Delhi education; private 

foundations that support Delhi’s mission; and state, federal and industry partnerships. Delhi’s success 

includes: 

The Golf and Plant Sciences 

program’s exemplary fundraising 

efforts were highlighted by 

$10,000 in student assistantships 

from Boehringer/Ingelheim; 

$16,000 from a summer camp 

for veterinary technicians; 

$10,000 in scholarships from 

Golf Course Superintendents 

Association of America and New 

York State Turfgrass Association; 

and a $250,000 equipment 

loan program. 

Business and Community 

Service programs generated more 

than $500,000 in revenue, which 

provided more than $200,000 in 

direct support to the college. A

while keeping alumni connected

a total of $18,567 in gifts to the 

College Foundation. 

Nearly 50 percent of faculty 

and staff are now providing 

annual gifts to SUNY Delhi, 

thanks to an outstanding 

Computer Information 

Services, working with the 

math faculty, saved over $5,000 

by developing a “virtual” 

blackboard. The blackboard 

allows faculty to present course 

content from laptops, edit in 

real time during classroom 

problem-solving exercises, and 

response to the annual Campus 

Community Campaign. The 

campaign generated 33 new 

donors and 17 upgrades, which 

increased the total number of 

faculty and staff participating 

to 218. 

More than $30,000 has 

been raised to date for the 

new Farrell Hall through 

fundraising, special events, 

donations from staff members, 

and the Student Senate. 

The Class of 2009 contributed 

a gift of $5,000 to support peer 

tutoring for students. 

Increase efficiencies through 

the Utilization of Technology 

The college continually searches for ways that technology can reduce 

costs, streamline operations and improve services to students, parents 

and alumni. For example, the college adopted Moodle as the online 

learning management system. This open source software has saved 

approximately $130,000 over the past two years. Other ways Delhi 

has cut costs and improved service through technology include:

professional staff are now done

Construction has begun on an 

expansion of the Clark Field 

House to provide new facilities 

for academic, intramural and 

recreational programs. 

Maintain/Improve Facilities 

The college has approached its campus planning through two perspectives. 

A 10-year facilities master plan that balances academic and facility needs is 

being developed. A utilities master plan is also under way to ensure that the 

campus infrastructure continues to serve the college’s needs. Other facility 

improvements made over the past year include:

by the President’s Farm Task Force, 

including replacing the equine barn 

roof and designing a new walk-in barn. 

Upgrades to residence halls 

included renovating 12 bathrooms 

and the laundry room in Russell Hall, 

new furniture and a fresh coat of paint 

for the interior of DuBois Hall, and 

interior doors for Gerry Hall. 

Thurston Hall has come alive 

while Farrell Hall is undergoing 

renovations, providing new space 

for student activities and for the 

student mailroom. 

Computer Information Systems 

upgraded 22 computer work stations 

and student printers in the Electrical 

Technology Lab and 24 computer 

work stations in Resnick Library… 

Computer access was extended to 

technology students by creating a 

new computer-equipped automotive 

lab…Classroom technology has 

been upgraded in Sanford Hall and 

all the classrooms within Evenden 

Tower have been updated with new 

digital projectors, video systems and 

document cameras. 

The College Foundation provided 

$10,000 in support of priority 

projects on campus. 

Two new adaptive motion trainers, 

a new upright and recumbent bike, 

and a rowing machine were added to 

the Fitness Center. 

The $18 million renovation to 

Farrell Hall has presented a challenge 

to meet the food service needs of 

students. CADI has responded 

with three food service units to 

accommodate the 1,000 mid-day 

meals that were previously served in 

Farrell Hall. A classroom in Evenden 

Tower has been transformed into 

a deli with carved-to-order meats 

and cheeses, and the first floor of 

MacDonald Hall is now a taco stand 

for grab-and-go service. In Sanford 

Hall, a computer lab was redesigned 

as the Cyber Café where organic fare 

and hot entrees are served and free 

Internet access is available to students. 

Partnerships between facilities staff and the college’s academic programs expand 

the academic experience for students and improve the campus. This year’s 

projects included sidewalks, pavers, landscaping, athletic field improvements, and 

construction of dugouts for women’s softball (pictured).

The measure of Delhi’s commitment to enhance services can be 

seen in the recent Student Opinion Survey, which ranked Delhi 

among the SUNY leaders in such areas as quality of instruction, 

academic advising, acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for 

a career, community service, and athletic and recreation facilities. 

Other service initiatives include: 

University Police Officers 

and Student Life staff received 

training in CPR, AED, and First 

Aid in the Workplace. 

Residential custodians 

received comprehensive training 

on fire safety, chemicals, sexual 

harassment, and workplace 

violence prevention. 

Partnering with the Student 

Senate, a student snow shoveling 

crew was formed to improve 

snow removal effectiveness 

and timeliness. 

A $16,735 grant from the 

United Way of Delaware and 

Otsego Counties funded the 

nutrition, health and safety 

program at the Delhi Campus 

Child Care Center. 

The Staff Development 

Committee coordinated 58 

on-campus workshops for 

faculty and staff, including 

seminars on software 

applications, pedagogy, 

sustainability, academic 

advising, workplace violence and 

sexual harassment prevention, 

recreational/leisure pursuits, and 

much more. 

Human Resources was 

ranked first in New York State 

in one of the two measures of 

payroll performance by the 

Office of the State Controller. 

The President’s Cabinet 

and campus leaders completed 

emergency preparedness 

training in National Incident 

Management System 

(NIMS) procedures. 

In conjunction with the 

Financial Aid Department, 

the Business and Finance 

The Counseling and Health Center 

continued to score extremely well, 

with 99 percent of students reporting 

“very satisfied” or “highly satisfied” 

with the quality of care and the 

professionalism of staff. The center is 

highly utilized, with over 8,000 annual 

contacts, averaging 60 visits per day.

Delhi strives to create a positive environment to live, work and 

learn. This year, SUNY Delhi was named by The Chronicle of Higher 

Education as a “Great College to Work For,” the result of a national 

survey of faculty, staff and administrators at more than 240 colleges 

and universities nationwide. The college is committed to nurturing the 

“Delhi family” by seeking opportunities to bring students, faculty and 

staff, and the community together. They include: 

Community Service— The O’Connor Center for Community 

Service was named to the U.S. Presidential Higher Education 

Community Service Honor Roll for the third consecutive year…April 

was CADI Community Service month with the College Association 

pledging $5 per hour up to a maximum of $5,000 for time logged 

by students in the O’Connor Center for Community Service. The 

students responded with over 1,600 hours generating donations of 

$2,500 to the Delaware County Relay for Life and the Golisano 

Children’s Hospital in Syracuse. 

Town-Gown Relations— CADI donations were made to the 

greater Delhi community with $2,500 in support of the Delhi Fire 

Department and $5,000 in support of O’Connor Hospital…The 

Mayor’s Task Force on College and Community Relations was formed 

to bring together local and college officials, students, landlords, 

and local residents to seek ways to enhance town/gown relations. 

Outcomes included a new landlord survey sponsored by the Student 

Senate, a fall “drive-in” movie for the community and students, a 

neighborhood meeting and barbecue, and “Explore Delhi Passport” 

to introduce students to the greater Delhi community. 

The Alumni Association recognized Bruce Jones ’75, who 

has been actively involved with SUNY Delhi’s Criminal Justice 

Studies program, the college’s fund-raising efforts and the Alumni 

Association, as its 2009 Distinguished Alumnus. Teresa Angell ’06 

was honored as Alumna of Merit for her work assisting those afflicted 

with HIV. 

The second class of inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame 

included: Rob Waller ’70, wrestling and cross country; Donna 

Williams McCubbin ’80, field hockey; Neil Riddell ’62, basketball 

and cross country; and Jerry Kilmer, track and cross country coach 

from 1986–1993.

Delhi’s Strategic Approach

Provost Dennis Callas says his phone has been ringing off the hook. At least it seems that 

way. Delhi has had so much success with its strategy to grow enrollment that multiple 

SUNY colleges want to know Delhi’s secret. 

“I’ve been inundated with calls from colleagues throughout the SUNY system that want to 

know our formula. They want to know what we’ve done so they can replicate it,” Provost 

Callas explains. 

The secret is Delhi’s ability to anticipate and respond to a void in the New York State 

educational system. Community college graduates are predominately place bound. Their 

educational options are extremely limited beyond the associate degree because community 

colleges cannot offer four-year programs. At the same time, SUNY Delhi had reached a 

point where enrollment growth was extremely limited; with enrollment at record levels, both 

academic and residential facilities were operating at capacity. These two forces produced the 

perfect storm.

Delhi found a willing partner in Schenectady 

County Community College (SCCC). In 

2002, SCCC invited Delhi to establish a 

satellite site at its campus. The idea was to 

reach out to those in the Capital District 

who were in the hospitality industry and 

wanted an advanced degree, but were place 

bound. Delhi began offering its successful 

baccalaureate degree in Hotel and Resort 

Management to these prospective students. 

Several years later, the experiment has become 

a model for success in the SUNY system. 

Delhi now offers four-year degrees in Travel 

and Tourism Management and Business and 

Information Technology at Schenectady. 

Approval for a baccalaureate degree in 

Criminal Justice is expected in 2010. 

“The key to our success in Schenectady has 

been the fact that we sought out a market 

that was interested in our program and we 

partnered with a great institution,” says 

Assistant Professor David Brower, who served 

as Delhi’s first inter-institutional liaison at 

Schenectady. “There were no programs in 

the Capital District that filled the need for 

hospitality professionals to advance their 

careers. We filled that need.” 

The Schenectady satellite campus has 

positioned Delhi so that it can also attract 

students from neighboring programs at 

Hudson Valley Community College and 

Fulton-Montgomery Community College. 

Partnerships with these colleges allow 

students to seamlessly transfer into the Delhi 

programs at Schenectady. 

The enrollment initiative with SCCC has 

been so successful that it has led Delhi to 

establish new partnerships with Tompkins 

Cortland Community College and Onondaga 

Community College. The plan is to offer 

baccalaureate programs in Hotel and Resort 

Management and Business and Technology 

Management on these campuses in January 

2010. 

Delivering Delhi’s unique baccalaureate 

programs at satellite sites is just one way the 

college is expanding its enrollment growth. 

Delhi is also reaching out to students online. 

As Provost Callas says, “Residential colleges 

will always be limited in how much they 

can grow unless they consider other methods 

of delivery.” 

Delhi’s online RN to BSN program is a 

phenomenal success. Delhi was the first 

college in New York State to deliver the 

program completely online and enrollment 

has grown to over 250 students in less than 

two years. The program is attracting students 

from across the United States and interest is 

growing at the international level thanks to its 

online access and flexible delivery system. The 

college is now exploring other opportunities 

to expand the number of degree programs 

offered online. 

“Our vision to export our strengths is paying 

dividends. We’ve created a solid business 

model that will help us continue to grow,” 

says President Candace Vancko. “Now 

more than ever, it’s important to look for 

enrollment opportunities because we have to 

supplement our limited state funds. It’s this 

forward thinking that keeps us a step ahead of 

the competition.” 

Vancko Hall is the college’s 

site for online learning. 

Delhi’s BSN faculty traveled from across the United States and around the world to personally congratulate 

the program’s first graduates in May. 

Start Small, Dream Big: 

Delhi’s Online Nursing Program exceeds expectations 

Dr. Mary Pat Lewis, Professor and Department Chair of Nursing and Allied Health, 

expected that Delhi’s online RN to BSN program would be successful. The college had a 

solid business plan for its growth. What she didn’t expect was the online program to grow 

by nearly 90 percent in just over one year. 

“Our plan was to start small,” says Dr. Lewis. “We anticipated about 30 to 35 students 

to begin with, but we enroll nearly 300 students this summer, which puts us way ahead of 

our projections.” 

Delhi began offering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in January 2008. It marked the first 

degree of its kind to be offered totally online in New York State and was in response to 

the state and nation’s shortage of baccalaureate-prepared RNs. The plan for Delhi’s online 

program was to market the degree to registered nurses who wished to pursue a bachelor’s 

degree, but who could not attend classes because they are what Dr. Lewis describes as 

“non-traditional students.” It would be a hardship for these students to attend classes at 

Delhi because of family responsibilities, the difficulty of traveling to campus, and the 

logistics of taking time off from work while immersed in a career. 

Thanks to the survey results, Delhi knew its competitive advantage would be quality, 

access and affordability. Delhi already had a solid reputation for nursing education, so the 

program’s accessibility through seven-week modules and its cost, which was far below the 

competition, made it an easy pick for RNs.

We conducted a survey of our graduates and current nursing 

students to help map out our plan for offering a BSN,” says 

Dr. Lewis. “It was clear from the survey that there was a strong 

interest. However, we discovered the program would need 

to be offered online to meet the needs of our students. 


Possibly the biggest selling point of Delhi’s online 

RN to BSN program is its flexible scheduling. 

Students may participate either full- or parttime, 

and can attend in fall, spring or summer 

semesters. There is even an accelerated option 

that allows students to complete the program 

in as little as a year if they attend as full-time 

students. “Other online BSN programs just do 

not compare to what we offer,” Dr. Lewis adds. 

Delhi knew it could capitalize on the fact that 

New York State has the largest percentage of 

associate degree nursing graduates in the country. 

With that knowledge in hand, Delhi had found 

its niche. 

The program’s success has led not only to 

attracting students, but also to attracting many 

outstanding faculty. Associate Professor 

Debra Adelman joined the staff as the program’s 

first faculty member and helped with the launch. 

“Though I’ve created courses and programs for 

universities before, none gave me the freedom to 

experiment and try new teaching methodologies 

like Delhi’s RN to BSN program. It allowed 

me to try my ideas, and they have been a great 

success, mostly due to the support I’ve received 

from Dr. Lewis, my colleagues who teach in the 

program, and the support we’ve received from 

the college.” 

Today the program has grown to include three 

full-time faculty members and 11 adjunct 

instructors with a fourth full-time professor soon 

to be added. But exceptional faculty are only 

part of the Delhi success story. “We knew we 

couldn’t create an online program in isolation. We 

had to consider other resources that would make 

this an exceptional experience for students,” 

Dr. Lewis explains. 

New positions were added—an online 

coordinator to execute the web coursework and 

an online enrollment counselor who provides 

assistance to students who are dealing with 

admissions and financial aid issues. The college’s 

Help Desk was enlisted to provide technical 

support to online students and the Resnick 

Library now offers a number of electronic journals 

and databases, such as the Cumulative Index to 

Allied Health and Nursing (CINAHL), thanks 

to SUNY High Needs Funding. Since more than 

50 percent of the RN to BSN program is made 

up of Liberal Arts courses, a huge commitment 

was made by the Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty. 

“The faculty has rallied to develop and teach the 

courses that are necessary to round out the BSN 

curriculum,” Dr. Lewis says. “Without everyone’s 

help, the RN to BSN program would not have 

been possible.” 

Continuous improvement is a program priority. 

There are strong assessment and evaluation 

tools in place to make sure the program remains 

an industry leader. Students are asked for 

their feedback after every seven-week session. 

Retention is at 75 percent, which is good for an 

online program, according to Dr. Lewis. “We 

strive to be very student-centered. Our thought is 

that distance learning does not mean ‘distant.’” 

“I believe the biggest strength to the program is 

that we are very student-centered and understand 

that life ‘happens,’” says Dr. Adelman. “We try to 

respond to our students’ needs, while maintaining 

a high-quality learning experience that ensures 

students will meet course objectives and student 

learning and program outcomes.”

Advancement Team 

expands Outreach 

Maureen McKenna and Lucinda Brydon have 

joined SUNY Delhi’s college advancement 

team. Maureen McKenna is the college’s Senior 

Development Officer. She has more than 20 

years experience in fundraising and advancement 

work, including 10 years at SUNY colleges 

and four years at Mansfield University, PA, and 

Metropolitan State College in Denver, CO. 

Conducting philanthropic work in three higher 

education state systems, McKenna has a keen 

passion for the importance of public higher 

education. “Education is the great leveler. It’s 

essential to our democracy,” she says. “That’s 

why we must continue to provide accessible, 

affordable, excellent education to all, and to 

encourage private investment in strategic efforts 

so that SUNY Delhi continues to creatively meet 

its mission.” 

It was the chance to enhance Delhi’s 

philanthropic culture that drew McKenna to 

the college. She says, “Delhi has made very 

thoughtful, strategic program decisions that will 

contribute to its continuing success. I’m excited 

to coordinate investments in these key initiatives.” 

It was also the enthusiasm of Delhi’s faculty 

and staff that drew McKenna to the position. 

“Beyond its great academic offerings, I find 

Delhi’s hardworking faculty and staff are 

committed to the college’s future. I hope to 

encourage faculty and staff to partner in the 

alumni outreach that has been encouraged by 

President Vancko.” 

Brydon, who joined the Delhi staff three 

years ago in the Student Life Division, has 

stepped into the role of Alumni and Annual 

Giving Coordinator. She has over 15 years 

experience in community relations at The 

Arc of Delaware County, a non-profit human 

services organization, and a bachelor’s degree in 

marketing from SUNY Fashion Institute 

of Technology. 

Brydon feels she is returning to her professional 

roots with her new position, which involves 

annual fundraising and leading the college’s 

alumni programming. “It’s a great combination, 

and it’s a job that I can do with conviction 

because I believe in the good things our campus 

community is accomplishing and the value of a 

SUNY education.” 

Brydon is meeting alumni, directing the annual 

Phonathon fundraising effort with a staff of 

seven students, and planning the 2010 Alumni 

Weekend. She says she feels fortunate for a 

strong introduction to the college through 

her work in the Student Life Division and to 

be working with an advancement team that 

has devoted many years to the college. “I’m 

especially enthused about the potential to 

nurture relationships with our young alumni. 

I see our new alumni web site and social 

networking presence as a real asset to our efforts 

to build new and stronger connections with 

alumni of all ages.”

Alumnus Gift Helps Students 

Gain Industry Insight 

Hank Adams ’77, Vice President of 

Kiewit Constructors, Inc., has guaranteed 

Delhi construction majors will get a taste 

of industry action. He recently made a 

gift to his alma mater to sponsor Delhi’s 

participation in the Associated Schools of 

Construction (ASC) Region One Student 

Design-Build Competition. 

According to Associate Professor 

Eric Robert, students from the top 

construction management programs from 

Maine to Virginia compete in the two-day 

event. Delhi faculty wanted this to be a 

part of the college’s four-year construction 

management curriculum, but support was 

needed for Delhi’s participation. 

“Since starting a four-year program, 

we knew this competition would be a 

great addition to our students’ industry 

experience,” says Professor Robert. “That’s 

when Hank came to us with the idea 

that he would sponsor Delhi students at 

the competition.” 

“Delhi provided me with a very strong 

foundation. The faculty took a personal 

interest and instilled a sense of urgency in 

me that has remained with me to this day. 

I wanted to show my appreciation for what 

Delhi has done for me and my family,” 

says Adams.

DeAR FRIeNDS: 

This Annual Report is filled with great news about the achievements of SUNY 

Delhi and our faculty, staff and students. This is a remarkable college whose stature 

has greatly increased, thanks to a highly successful strategic plan for growth. SUNY 

Delhi is being extremely entrepreneurial and resourceful. We are maximizing 

revenue opportunities, conserving resources and limiting the impact of massive 

state budget cuts to ensure that students continue to receive an outstanding college 

education. Based on the most recent Student Opinion Survey, we are achieving 

that goal. 

Our most immediate concern is keeping a Delhi education affordable. SUNY 

tuition increased 14 percent this year and that is having a dramatic impact on 

students and their families. I saw the impact first-hand, beginning on the first 

day of the fall semester when students arrived at the College Foundation Office 

seeking emergency loans to pay for books. The number of students seeking 

emergency loans increased significantly this fall, which is no surprise, considering 

the following: 

30% of our students come from families with household incomes of less 

than $30,000. 

Student borrowing totaled $7 million in Fall 2009 and their parents borrowed 

an additional $1.8 million. 

Increasing scholarship funds to help deserving students with documented financial 

need is our highest priority. Last year, thanks to your generosity and special 

support from the Alumni Association, the College Foundation was able to provide 

$200,000 in scholarships to Delhi students. That support is helpful in limiting 

student indebtedness, but it barely begins to touch Delhi students’ true needs. 

This year, we are stepping up our efforts to reach out and ask for your help. Last 

year, 1,379 alumni gave to the Annual Fund, which represents about a 4 percent 

participation rate; the national average is 11 percent. Our goal is to increase 

participation by 8 percent this year with the eventual goal of doubling alumni 

participation. Better yet, if every Delhi alumnus would donate $25 a year, we 

could raise over $750,000 to support students.

this spring. The Phonathon is just one of the ways you can support SUNY Delhi
