Namche. 11,300 feet. Brilliant white, sharp-edged peaks tower over azure rooftops. Colorful prayer
flags flutter and dance in the breeze. The lack of oxygen is palpable. And what air there is, is thick
with the pungent, unmistakable
scents of incense and
burning yak dung.
This is the home of the
Sherpa—the bravest highaltitude
mountaineers the
world has ever known.
When climbers come from
afar to scale the treacherous
Himalayan summits, it is
the Sherpa who makes the
route, carries the load, and
lays the rope all the way to
the top and back. They are
the unsung heroes of countless
Everest expeditions.
They are also the backbone
of our brand.
You see, Sherpa Adventure
Gear is not your ordinary
outdoor company. Our products are designed, worn and endorsed by these heroes that make their
living in the toughest conditions in the world. And a part of the proceeds from every sale go back to
Nepal to help underprivileged Sherpa children succeed. This is the Sherpa heart in action—always
helping each other climb up, and never losing sight of the destination and what’s important.
Just like the indomitable Sherpa, you can depend on our clothing and gear to be there for you day
after day—even in the harshest conditions.
Sherpas and Mt. Everest—A History Intertwined
Ever since Sir Edmund Hillary first climbed Everest in 1953 with the invaluable assistance of Tenzing
Norgay Sherpa, climbers have developed close relationships with Sherpa people.
It is widely recognized that without the Sherpa, westerners would rarely be able to climb the great
peaks successfully. Because Sherpa guides and assistants have become such an integral part of any
successful team, westerners now use the word “Sherpa” to mean a local guide or assistant, sometimes
without realizing that this is in fact a clan name.
Who are the Sherpa?
The Sherpa are one of the original mountain people of Nepal. Most Sherpas live in the eastern regions
of the country known as Solu, Khumbu, and Pharak . However, some live farther west in the Rolwaling
valley and in the Helambu region north of Kathmandu. Pangboche is the Sherpa’s oldest village in
Nepal, and is estimated to have been built over 300 years ago.
Sherpas speak a Tibetan dialect, and traditionally are traders and farmers cultivating high altitude
fields of potatoes, barley, wheat, and buckwheat. If they live within a day’s walk of Namche Bazaar,
some will raise water buffalo and slaughter them for the Saturday market in Namche.
Today Sherpas are renowned in the global climbing and mountaineering community for their
hardiness, expertise, and experience at high altitudes. In Nepal, Sherpas often insist on making a
distinction between themselves and general porters, as they generally serve in a more guide-like role
and command higher pay, as well as greater respect from the community.
Giving Back
The Sherpa are the unsung heroes of Everest. From those early days of Sir Edmund Hillary first
successful summit, to modern mountaineers’ attempts on treacherous Himalayan peaks, these
incredible high-altitude climbers have been there every step of the way—guiding, hauling food and
gear, setting ropes, and rescuing sick and injured climbers. Unfortunately, Sherpas still often live in
impoverished conditions.
In order to honor their heroic feats, Sherpa Adventure Gear is setting aside a portion of proceeds from
the sale of all products to benefit the health, education, and welfare of underprivileged Sherpa children.
Sherpa Athletes
We are proud to work with the following three remarkable and accomplished Sherpas to produce
superior adventure gear and help reward Sherpa families for their decades of experience, labor and
sacrifice.
Lhakpa Rita Sherpa - One of the world’s most experienced climbers, having
ascended Mt. Everest 9 times.
Raised in Thame, the hometown of famed Everest climber Tenzing Norgay, Lhakpa Rita Sherpa is on
track to be the first Sherpa to attain all of the “seven summits” (the highest peaks on each of the seven
continents.) Already, Lhakpa has guided on numerous mountains worldwide and successfully summitted
Everest nine times, Cho-Oyu three times, Mt. Vinson (in the Antarctica), Denali, Aconcagua and numerous
other peaks in the Cascades including Mount Baker and Rainer.
Known as the “Best Sirdar in the Khumbu”, Lhakpa Rita is recognized by other mountain guides, sirdars,
and climbers for his unique expertise and experience, and is one of only a few Sherpas working as a fulltime
mountain guide around the world.
Lakpa Rita guides primarily for Alpine Ascents and resides in Shoreline, Washington with his wife and
children.
Pemba Doma Sherpa - The first woman to scale Everest from two faces.
As a little girl growing up in Namche, Pemba Doma Sherpa often followed her beloved mountaineering
grandfather into the mountains. Seeing him and the other mountaineers climb various peaks inspired her
to dream of going higher and higher.
Pemba’s first climb above 5,000 meters came before the age of seven, and as a teenager she climbed Island
Peak and Lobuche. On May 19, 2000 she made her first trip to the top of Mount Everest, becoming the
second Nepalese woman to attain the top and the first to do so from Tibet. Two years later, she made the
summit again, but this time from the South side, becoming the first woman to scale the mountain from
both the northern and southern faces.
Because of her amazing accomplishments, Pemba inspires women around the world to reach for the top in
their own lives.
Nuri Sherpa - Professional Himalayan alpinist, with ascents of four 8,000meter
peaks.
Born in 1970, Nuri Sherpa is the youngest of our gear atheletes. An extremely skilled climber, his
mountaineering resume shows a range of experience that belies his youth—he has already summitted
Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Pumori, Dhalulagiri, and a host of other high peaks in the Himalayas.
His charming gold toothed smile hides a sharp intellect and an extensive knowledge of the mountains.
Nuri is a perfectionist, eminently dependable, and honest with his comments on our gear. Always ready to
help, never flustered, Nuri Dai (big brother) has endeared himself to the Sherpa Adventure Gear team in
Nepal.
Nuri divides his time between leading expeditions for Climb High during the climbing season to now
helping our research and development team during the off season. He lives in Kathmandu with his wife
and two children. This spring season, he will lead an expedition to Everest and will be testing our gear
personally, all the way to the summit and back.
The first down parka was patented in the US in 1936. Then Jim Whittaker wore one to top of Everest in 1963 and they
quickly became the standard for mountain adventures. Many things have changed since then—fabrics are lighter and
more durable, synthetic insulation has come on the scene. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a jacket
that packs extreme warmth into a small package.
Urgyen Primaloft® Jacket
If you’re expecting more rain than snow, take along
this ultra-light, synthetic jacket instead of a down
sweater. Primaloft insulation has a high warmth to
volume ratio so it won’t take up much room in
your pack or layered under a shell. Plus it keeps
you warm even when it’s soaking wet.
• High compressibility makes this jacket easy to pack
• Adjustable collar and cuffs keep heat in and weather out
• A DWR coating makes the ultra-light, ripstop nylon
The First Sherpa
Ang Tharkey (1908-1981)
by Kunda Dixit
Mountain climbing was serious business in the early
days. Expeditions attempting to climb Peak XV (Sagarmatha,
Mt. Everest, Chomolungma) undertook two
month-long treks from Darjeeling across the Tibetan
Plateau via Shekar Dzong to Rongbuk. When and if
they survived that, the road was straight up the extremely
difficult North Col route to Everest. Without
oxygen, and with equipment that seems woefully
lacking compare to what’s used today. But climb they
did. Reaching 28,000 feet and more, higher than any
man had ever been before, they were turned back by
premature monsoons and bad snow. The reward? They
limped back to Darjeeling minus fingers and toes.
Ang Tharkey, who died in Kathmandu on July 28th
1981, belonged to the first generation of elite climbing
Sherpas. Born in 1908 in Khunde in the Year of the
Monkey (according to the Tibetan calendar) Ang Tharkay
went to Darjeeling at the age of twelve in search of
work with expeditions.
He accompanied Eric Shipton on eight of his pre-war
expeditions in the Himalaya, including four on the
northern route to Everest. Ang Tharkey had seen the
days when high altitude porters were paid six annas
compensation for each finger they lost by frost bite.
And if the injury was really bad, and a porter could not
walk back to Darjeeling, he was entitled by contract to
receive a pony and one rupee compensation. Sherpas
received blankets for high altitude camps, and sleeping
bags were issued only during emergencies.
When Nepal was opened to expeditions, and the first
reconnaissance groups traveled up the Dudh Kosi to
Solu Khumbu, Ang Tharkey was with them. He had
shed his traditional Sherpa pigtail, and dressed in
smart woolen breeches, “but had same, shy reticence
and quite humour,” that Shipton remembered. He
joined Eric Shipton, and Edmund Hillary on their
1951 expedition in which they tackled the treacherous
Khumbu ice fall, the gateway to the southern route
to Everest, and paved the way for the first successful
ascent two years later. The expedition then went on
to explore the upper reaches of the Imja Valley, the
Hongu Basin, and then
crossed the Tesi Tapcha
into Rolwa Jing. Shipton
was impressed by
Ang Tharkey, and was
moved to remark that
he regarded his chief
Sherpa as “a man of
outstanding character and ability.”
Ang Tharkey also took part in another epoch making
Himalaya climb, the French Expedition to Annapurna
in 1950, lead by Maurice Herzog. He reached the top
camp above the “Sickle” on the north face of the first
eight-thousander to be climbed.
After this, he was sent for training in technical climbing
in Switzerland by the Himalayan Mountaineering
Institute in Darjeeling. Although he was invited by
Herzog to bring his wife along to France, it is indication
of Ang Tharkey’s forthrightness that he refused to
take his wife to save his “Bara Sahib” extra expenses!
In 1954, Ang Tharkey resigned from the HMI and set
up his own business taking trekkers up to Kangchenjunga.
In 1962, he became the oldest man to have
climbed up to eight thousand meters, when he made
it to the South Col with the Indian Everest Expedition.
Although he then retired from active mountaineering,
Ang Tharkey took a party up to the Annapurna
Sanctuary in 1975, and sirdared the French Expedition
to Dhaulagiri in 1978.
At seventy three years young, Ang was still extremely
fit, and many remember the cheerful waves he gave
from his bicycle on Durbar Marg. (he never rode in
cars if he could help it). Ang Tharkey was looking
forward to a quiet retirement in his orchard and farm
in Simbhanjayang, when he was suddenly hospitalized
and died of cancer.
Ang Tharkey is survived by his wife, four sons and a
daughter.
I n s u l a t i o n - W o m e n ’s
If you’re planning to spend time in the kind of temperatures Sherpas endure day after day, you need more than a just a
few layers and a shell to keep you comfortable. So we asked Pema Doma Sherpa, one of two women ever to scale Everest
from both faces, to help us design a line of insulated jackets that would keep anyone warm at high elevations.
This is the result…
www.sherpaadventuregear.com
Women’s Thyangboche Down Sweater
Our signature piece, this feather-weight down sweater
features plush, 750-fill down lofted in an ultra-light
ripstop nylon shell. This is the down jacket you squash
down and throw in your pack for an overnighter, toss
on after a long day on the slopes, or wear while you’re
waiting for your turn on the ropes.
• A DWR coating makes the ultra-light, ripstop nylon highly
water resistant
• Two hand pockets and one internal pocket hold small items
• Light weight and compressibility make it highly packable
Women’s Thyangboche Down Vest
Named after the Thyangboche monastery, spiritual center of
the Khumbu region, this down vest would make a
wonderfully warm companion on the trek up from Namche.
Made with 650 fill power goose down, it is just a little bit
lighter than our popular Thyangboche Down Sweater. Since
it offers so much warmth for its size and weight there’s no
reason not to pack it along just in case the mercury drops.
• A DWR coating makes the ultra-light, ripstop nylon water resistant
• Two hand pockets and one internal pocket hold small items
• Ultra-light weight and compressibility make it highly packable
Sherpa Adventure Gear: The Journey So Far
The Idea
Sherpa Adventure Gear was inspired by sheer chance
in 2003. Back then, Tashi Sherpa and his family owned
an import clothing business. In May of that year, while
walking down the streets of Manhattan, a magazine
cover caught his eye. The craggy lines of an anciently
familiar face staring back belonged to none other than
his Uncle Ang Gyalzen Sherpa. It was a commemoration
issue for the 50th.anniversary of the first ascent of
Everest. Tashi was amazed and grateful to discover that
his uncle was one of the original Sherpa veterans on that
celebrated expedition in 1953.
The Reason
Being from a Sherpa family himself, he was deeply saddened
to read about the many heroes that lived unsung
and unknown in the shadow of Everest. Every climber
in his heart is grateful for the inestimable life saving
worth of having a Sherpa companion on the treacherous
slopes of the Himalayas. It is the Sherpa who makes
the route, carries the load and lays the rope all the way
to top and back. They risk their lives for a pittance and
smile, and rarely receive any of the fame or recognition
that follows after a successful summit.
Tashi instinctively felt the urge to create a company
whose purpose would be to honor these intrepid Heroes
of Everest. He would use his own experience in manufacturing
to build exceptional gear and clothing that
would be tested and endorsed by the gutsiest and best
high altitude climbers in the world - the Sherpas themselves.
Here was an opportunity to tell the world about the
Sherpa people, their unique culture, and their history,
through the creation of this eponymous brand. Each
Sherpa Brand Ambassador would be paid a royalty
based on sales. Proceeds would also go to a special
fund for the under privileged Sherpa children in Nepal.
This was the Sherpa heart in action.
Sherpa Adventure Gear Today
The early days were exhausting and nerve wracking, but
we somehow willed ourselves to stumble and survive
through the worst crevasses of our business expedition.
Today, after 3 years, most of our goals are slowly being
met. The brand is gaining international recognition and
is now distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America.
Our Sherpa heroes have become well known and there
are Sherpa children in Nepal who will smile every year.
More Sherpa athletes are being invited into the fold to
test and endorse our growing line of products.
One of our current goals is to build our own factory in
Nepal, staffed by local people, train the Nepalis in factory
management principles and manufacturing processes
to produce outerwear that is on par with the best
and with the label “Made in Nepal”. Plans are on for
our first Sherpa Adventure Gear retail outlets in, where
else, but Kathmandu, Nepal and Seattle, Washington.
But at the core we will always be a small company with
a simple vision of doing business in the inimitable way
of the Sherpas. One step at a time, helping each other
on the climb up, and never losing sight of the destination.
Thoji Chey
This could never have been done alone. Along the way,
our growing circle of family and friends has stood by
us, and we have found a loyal following of customers.
They are too numerous to list here but each will know
when we say Thoji Chey (thank you). As we look back
on our short history, we are eternally grateful for all the
help and guidance we have received . Every season we
grow. While the expedition has not been easy at all, our
passion and sincerity has carried us through. As with
any ascent, the adventure presents new challenges, but
with dedication and commitment, we will reach the
summit. The Sherpas always do.
