GOLDEN JUBILEE OF SHERPA EDUCATION
by Kunda Dixit
FORTY-FIVE MINUTES AFTER
TAKING OFF FROM KATHMANDU,
YOU LAND IN LUKLA AND ARE
TRANSPORTED INTO ANOTHER
WORLD. THE AIR IS CRISP, CLEAN
AND SCENTED WITH PINE. THE
TRAIL NORTH TOWARDS NAMCHE
IS DOMINATED BY THE IMPOSING
PYRAMID OF KONGDE. DEEP GREEN
FORESTS LINE THE FROTHING DUDH
KOSI.
WE CAME TO SEE SOME OF THE
SCHOOLS SET UP BY SIR EDMUND
HILLARY. THE CHILDREN GREET US AS
WE ENTER THE 6TH GRADE OF THE
CHAURIKHARKA SCHOOL. The students
have on smart blue uniforms. They look
alert and happy. The sun comes slanting
down from a skylight, reflecting off
the pine wood tables and walls and
bathing the room in a warm, golden
light.
Having seen classrooms elsewhere in
rural Nepal, this is a pleasant surprise.
It restores my sense of optimism about
Nepal’s future. Our generation messed
up the country, but I am sure these children
will help fix it when they grow up.
Most of the students are from Sherpa
families, yet when we ask them what
they want to be when they grow up
none of them say “mountain guide”.
Their answers are instead: “Doctor”,
“Helicopter Pilot”, or “Teacher”.
The Chaurikharka School is one of 27
set up in the valleys below Mt. Everest
by Hillary’s Himalayan Trust. The first
school was put up in 1960 in Khumjung.
May 2011 will mark the Golden Jubilee
of an education project that has transformed
the Sherpa people.
Ang Rita Sherpa was from the first
graduating batch of the Khumjung
School and now manages The Himalayan
Trust. He says, “If Sir Ed hadn’t
climbed Mt. Everest, all of this probably
wouldn’t have happened. It was
because he came back to us and helped
us with education and health.”
The story of how it all started is now
part of Sherpa lore. Hillary had just
come back to the Khumbu after a world
tour following his first ascent, and he
asked the Sherpas what he could do for
them. One of his porters told him: “We
have eyes but we do not see. Please
help us educate our children.”
There is an old faded black and white
photograph of Hillary hammering at
a nail atop the roof beams of the
Khumjung school with Ama Dablam in
the backdrop. A modest man, Hillary
helped build many of the schools he
fund-raised for. “He was more Sherpa
than a Sherpa,” recalls Ang Rita, “His
philosophy was that educated Sherpas
should come back to uplift their community.”
Today, there are hundreds of graduates
of the Khumjung school scattered
across Nepal and the world. One is an
airline captain flying Boeing 777's in
Germany, several are medical doctors
in the US. There are Sherpas with PhD's
in conservation. Whatever field they
choose, Sherpas have excelled because
of their positive outlook on life, their
integrity and capacity for hard work.
There is also an increasing trend among
the graduates of Hillary’s schools of
coming back to Nepal to help their
society and nation. They are practicing
in hospitals in the Khumbu, they are
working as teachers across Nepal, and
they are providing valuable experience
in the conservation of the Himalayan
environment. Hillary would have been
happy his students are returning.
Nepal is changing. But perhaps it will
only really change for the better when
some of the children at the school in
Chaurikharka raise their hand to also
say, “I want to be a politician.”

SHERPA ADVENTURE GEAR ATHLETES
Lakpa Rita
Pasang
Serap
LAKPA RITA SHERPA - One of the world’s best climbers and first Sherpa to climb the Seven Summits
Raised in Thame, Lakpa Rita Sherpa has been professionally guiding and climbing around the world for nearly two decades. This spring he became the first Sherpa ever to climb
the “Seven Summits” (the highest peaks on each of the seven continents). He has guided on numerous mountains worldwide and summited Everest 14 times, Cho Oyu three times, Mt.
Vinson (in the Antarctica), Denali, Aconcagua and numerous peaks in the Cascades including Mount Baker and Rainier.
Known as the “Best Sardar in the Khumbu,” Lakpa Rita is recognized by other mountain guides, sardars and climbers for his unique expertise and experience, and is one of only a few
Sherpas working as a full-time mountain guide around the world. Lakpa Rita guides primarily for Alpine Ascents International and lives in Shoreline, Washington with his wife and
three children.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Cho Oyu Jacket and Pants
PASANG LHAMU SHERPA - Professional mountain and trekking guide
Born in Lukla, the starting point for most expeditions, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa has always been interested in climbing. However, she didn’t actually start climbing until 2003, after
attending college in Kathmandu.
In four short years Pasang Lhamu has summited Everest from the Tibet side, Yala Peak, Nangpai Gusung and Island Peak. She has also traveled to Italy and France to take
mountaineering courses, climbing numerous peaks there as well. Today, in addition to working as an instructor and part time trekking guide, she is the primary care taker of her
14-year-old sister.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Lithang Jacket
SERAP JANGBU SHERPA - Top Himalayan alpinist with ascents of eleven 8,000-meter peaks
Serap Jangbu, age 40, is our newest athlete and he’s on a big mission—to become the first Sherpa to climb the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. He already is the first Sherpa and Nepali
to have stood atop the eight 8,000-meter peaks in his own country, including Everest three times, and has climbed K2 twice in less than a year. If all goes according to plan, he’ll
complete the ‘8,000-ers’ in 2011 with climbs of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Nanga Parbat.
Serap had to leave school when he was twelve to help support his family; now, with two children of his own, he hopes to give them a good education for a bright future, and “all that
I didn’t get in my childhood.”
MINGMA TENJING SHERPA - Professional mountain and trekking guide
Mingma Tenjing Sherpa started working as an assistant guide to his father during holiday vacations when he was just 14 years old. After attending the Hillary School in Khumjung,
he went on to high school and college in Kathmandu. Though Mingma has a degree in Physical Science, he has always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He regularly climbs
Lobutse, Island Peak and Mera Peak. Although Mingma Tenjing would like to climb higher peaks, his family doesn’t allow him to due to the risk. Recently, Mingma started his own
climbing and trekking agency in Nepal called Acclimatize Nepal. Married with no children yet, Mingma and his wife Yangji travel to Europe during the off season to climb and
promote their business.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Om Jacket
NIMA YANGJEE SHERPA - Professional high-altitude, long-distance runner
Nima, our youngest Gear Athlete, is an experienced high-altitude, long-distance marathon racer with 12 major races under her belt, including the Everest Marathon (42 km from
Everest Base Camp to Namche), the Annapurna Mandala Trail Race (300 km), and The Ultimate Trail Race (1,000 km from Kathmandu to the Dolpa Himal). She regularly places in the
top four with several 1st and 2nd place finishes. Last fall she placed 2nd in women’s and 9th over all in the 300 km Solu Khumbu Trail Marathon and this spring she won the women’s
division and placed 8th overall in the Annapurna Mandala Trail Race.
Nima has been interning in our Nepal office learning the intricacies of our gear manufacturing. She continually captivates everyone here with her verve and energy, and has proven
herself to be a fantastic asset. She still runs and trains for her next race every day.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Vajra Jacket
CHHEWANG NIMA SHERPA - Himalayan alpinist with 19 ascents of Mt. Everest
Chhewang Nima first reached the summit of Everest as part of an American expedition in May of 1994. Since then, he has been to the summit 18 more times via both the north and
south faces while supporting a variety of expeditions. Chhewang has also summited several other peaks in Tibet and Nepal, including Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Ama Dablam, and
Nosing Khan. On top of his climbing accomplishments, Chhewang spends his summers in Alaska as a yak trainer. Today he lives in Thamo, above Namche, in the Khumbu Valley with
his wife and two children, where he continues to work as a professional guide in the Everest Region.
THE LAYER YOU PUT NEXT TO YOUR SKIN IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT – and most versatile – thing you will pack. It serves as the conductor between
you and the world “out there,” moving moisture away from your skin so you feel dry and comfortable even if you’re working up a sweat. And, depending on
what the weather is doing, it can be worn on its own or under other layers. We use materials that incorporate the latest technologies to ensure you get the best
performance available – like our proprietary Dry Zone ® B A S E L AY E R - M E N ’ S
“smart” fabric, naturally odor-resistant bamboo charcoal, and easy-on-the-earth, itch-free Merino wool.
Baans Tee \bawns\
“Baans” means bamboo in Tibetan, and like that admirable
tree, this tee is flexible, strong and light. The fabric’s
fibers have 25% bamboo charcoal content, which plays a
big part in its de-odorizing performance. Naturally antibacterial,
moisture moving, and breathable – the Baans is
everything you want in a warm-weather action tee.
M I D L AY E R - M E N ’ S
THINK OF THESE AS INSULATION FOR THE HOUSE CALLED YOUR BODY. Their job is to gather up body heat and hold it. Most of the time, you’ll be wearing
one as an easy warm-up over a base layer. And when the weather dictates a need to throw a shell on top, the streamlined silhouette makes for a hitchfree,
low-bulk, less-constrictive layering experience. When you get to the tea house and it’s time to shed the shell, the handsome styling will add grace to any
situation. We leave the social skills to you.
Jaaro Micro-fleece Quarter-zip \jah-ro\
When you need a lightweight, highly-packable piece that offers
more warmth than the average base layer, but isn’t as heavy as
a sweater, this micro-fleece shirt fits the bill to a tee. The fleece is
breathable and quick to dry. Wear it alone or layer over it for
more warmth in cold weather.
• Wicking finish helps keep you dry and comfortable
• Raglan sleeves reduce chafing under pack straps
• Side zip pocket at waist keeps necessities close at hand
• Smooth outer finish improves durability
THESE ARE THE SHELL JACKETS AND PANTS TO CHOOSE WHEN YOU’RE GOING TO BE TRAVELING THROUGH COLD WEATHER in all but the wettest
conditions. We make them of durable, flexible fabrics, so you won’t feel bound-up or constricted when you’re striding hard on skate skis or reaching
overhead to place your next bit of protection. More breathable than traditional hard shells, soft shells extend your comfort range and reduce the amount of
time you spend adjusting layers.
Khangri Jacket \khung-ree\
pursuits. Layer this Jacket under a hard shell when conditions get extra
cold.
BITTER COLD. MONSOON RAINS. HURRICANE WINDS. When you’re faced with that deadly combo of cold and wet, nothing beats the weather-proof
protectiveness of hard shells. The dependable jackets and pants in this category have been field tested by our experienced Sherpa athletes in the extreme
and unpredictable storms of the Himalayan mountains: This is gear you can count on.
Resham 3-Layer Jacket \ray-shum\
Is there anyone who doesn’t need a jacket like this? Featherweight,
highly water-resistant, breathable and ultimately packable, it has
everything you need to get through an unpredictable shoulder-season
storm – and none of the extra features that bulk up the jackets
you relegate to gnarlier situations. The Resham is made of an ultralight,
3-layer bonded fabric, and all seams are sealed throughout.
It will shed water in a downpour, but it’s still breathable. When the
wind kicks up, cinch the hem down via the left side adjuster. And if
you or the temperature goes up, unzip the hand pockets – they’re
lined in mesh. The hood adjusts around the face via interior pulls –
there is nothing to slap tender skin in a headwind. A hidden adjustor
at the back of the head reduces the hood’s volume.
• Contoured cuffs have partial elastic and Velcro ® New for '11
tabs for a custom fit
• Extra-tall collar provides more face coverage when needed
• The waterproof, interior Napoleon pocket is ideal for
stowing electronic devices
THE KEY HERE IS GETTING AS MUCH WARMTH AS POSSIBLE INTO A LIGHT, COMPRESSIBLE LAYER. For extreme cold, down insulation still gets the prize.
But when it looks like the weather man is calling for wet with that cold, go with synthetics. We supply both options in multiple variations. And with our
Vajra Pants, we don’t leave your legs out in the cold either. Every piece incorporates years of feedback from our Sherpa athletes who live, work and play in
the Himalayan mountains.
Vajra Jacket \vudge-rah\
When you don’t need a full-on parka, but you do need
insulation that will deflect wind and cold even in wet conditions
(where down won’t do), this full-zip jacket is ideal. Thanks to
PrimaLoft ® One insulation’s light weight and compressibility,
you’ll take this cozy favorite on every outing.
• Two zip handwarmer pockets and one zip chest pocket hold necessities
I NEVER MET SIR ED
26
b y T a s h i S h e r p a
Next year marks the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Khumjung School. It
was there that a young New Zealander started not just a school but a quiet
revolution in education. What began there led to the global success of the
Sherpa community today. This is my own humble tribute to one of the greatest
Sherpa heroes of all time. Without Hillary Saab, none of this would be
possible and I doubt very much if Sherpa Adventure Gear would even exist.
A Buddhist stupa in the Thame Valley, Khumbu Region, Nepal.
Joseph Puryear
FOR A YOUNG SHERPA BOY IN THE
SIXTIES, STEEPED IN THE LORE OF
TENZING NORGAY AND HIS GOOD
FRIEND HILLARY, I WAS REALLY EXCITED
WHEN I HEARD THAT TWO OF THE
BIGGEST HEROES WERE COMING TO
VISIT MY FAMILY.
THOSE WERE THE MAGICAL DAYS OF MY
CHILDHOOD IN KALIMPONG 40 YEARS
AGO. My elder siblings and I were the
privileged ones, getting private British
schooling thanks to our far-sighted Sherpa
parents who, uneducated themselves, were
gifted with infinite wisdom and the sense
of sacrifice to send us to such expensive
institutions of learning.
We had enough idols then. We read Zane
Grey westerns, watched Audie Murphy
fight off 20 injuns single-handedly in
Technicolor and read snippets about the
wizard Pele who dribbled past eight
players and scored goals at will.
But Tenzing was our own, someone we knew
proudly and boasted of to my friends
as my Agu (Uncle). He and Hillary had
conquered Chomolungma in a post-war
era of hope and renewal. Tenzing was a
frequent visitor to our house and a great
friend of my parents. Edmund Hillary I
knew only through Tenzing’s biography,
this distant white giant who was irritatingly
always spoken of in the same breath
when asked about who was the first to
climb Everest. We all desperately wanted
Tenzing to be the only one, and it irked me
that we Sherpas had to share our glory.
I asked my mother about Hillary and she
admonished me gently. All Sherpas called
him Hillary Saab, she said, and he was
kind and unassuming and a great friend of
the Sherpas. And very tall. She took out our
best silverware, the famous blue willow tea
set which I remember seeing in full regalia
only that one time.
It was too much for me that here were two
living legends, larger than life, descending
on us. I became nervous and a bit scared
of making a fool of myself, what if I asked
too many questions? And so I ran away
that afternoon.
I am not sure if Amala ever scolded me,
but I know that I have always bitterly
regretted not being brave enough to meet
Sir Ed. How I wish I could turn the clock
back to just say I shook hands with the
greatest Sherpa who ever lived. Because,
for me and all of us Sherpas, there was no
doubt he was a Sherpa more than anyone
one of us could hope to be.
In the ensuing years, even in college, I
always followed this great man’s journey,
through the sporadic news bites and
personal encounters with those who had
the good fortune to work with him. I read
and heard with deep gratitude about
his selfless mission to better the lives
of those in the Khumbu Valley. He had
moved heaven and earth, literally, to
build the very first school in the Khumbu,
the Khumjung School. The brilliant careers
of many Sherpas today owe it to Sir Ed’s
drive and committed compassion to bring
education to the Sherpas. In the community,
there is a touching reverence that is spontaneous
and genuine for this giant soul.
I felt deep sorrow at his great loss when
his wife and daughter perished in a tragic
plane accident, and marveled at his
fortitude when he led an expedition down
the Ganges in the seventies. Next thing I
knew, Sir Ed was New Zealand’s ambassador,
and Nepal finally had the good
sense to make him an honorary Nepali
citizen in 2003. Such goodwill and honor
can only come to those who seek it least.
We live in a cynical world of instant
bombast and gratification. Very rarely
do we get to meet genuine heroes and
honor their achievements. We, at Sherpa
Adventure Gear hope that we will be able
to contribute in our own small ways to the
inextinguishable legacy left by Hillary
Saab.
YOU ALREADY KNOW THE SECRET OF STAYING COMFY IN FICKLE WEATHER AND CHANGING ACTIVITY LEVELS: LAYERING. What goes on first is probably
the most crucial component. It’s got to manage the microclimate next to your skin – move moisture out, resist odor retention, and keep you dry. That’s why
we make our base layers in “intelligent” fabrics like Thermal° Cool ® , Dry Zone ® B A S E L AY E R - W O M E N ’ S
polyester, bamboo charcoal, and Merino wool. They meet and exceed our high
performance expectations. And our streamlined styles don’t feel bulky under other layers.
Karuna Tank \kuh-ru-nah\
New for '11
You don’t have to sacrifice performance for good looks with
the Karuna Tank. It’s decidedly feminine without revealing
too much, and boasts a performance fabric and features
that allow you to bike to a nice restaurant – without having
to change your clothes before dining. The moisture-wicking
stretch fabric will keep you dry, the sliding T-back gives your
shoulders free range, and it’s impossible for the straps to
slide off your shoulders.
• The almost weightless fabric has a subtle surface texture that is
reminiscent of raw silk
• Built-in shelf support means you don’t have to wear a separate bra
• The empire waistline and paneled construction is flattering to many
body types
Baans Tee \bawns\
Bamboo – “baans” in Tibetan – grows wild and fast across
most of Nepal and Tibet; it’s a renewable resource. The fabric
we use to make this tee has fibers saturated with bamboo
charcoal. That content (25%), makes it inherently antimicrobial
and odor resistant. It’s also quick-to-dry, highly breathable,
and weightless. You’ll appreciate this do-it-all tee – for all
these reasons and more – every time you wear it.
• Absorbent, moisture-moving fabric has a weave that
ventilates on hot days
• Princess seaming refines the feminine fit
• Flat-locked seams are comfortable against the skin
• Seams are placed off the top of the shoulder for
comfort under pack straps
• Hem, neck and cuffs show the contrasting color and
Old-school wool can be scratchy. But Merino wool is
something else entirely. It’s wonderfully soft on the skin,
and the performance is classic as ever: warmth-retaining
even when wet, fresh after days of use, and a pleasure
to wear in both cool and warm conditions. The refreshing
combo of short-sleeves with slouchy turtleneck just
sweetens the deal.
Extended time in the backcountry can mean days between laundering.
Good thing you’ve got your Baans. The fibers that make
Which means you get fresh comfort from sunrise to sunset.
• Contrast side and sleeve panels show the fabric’s reverse side
• Thumbholes keep sleeves in place and add warmth
• Quarter-zip lets you vent core warmth as needed
DON’T LET A LITTLE COLD WEATHER KEEP YOU INDOORS. When the temperature drops, put one of our mid layers over your base layer – and if that’s
not enough, throw a shell on top of it. The mid layer acts as warmth-retaining insulation between your base layer and shell – and it can make all the
difference in the world between comfort and running for shelter. Every mid layer we make has a body-conscious fit, so it won’t feel bulky under other layers.
And when it’s warm enough to wear solo, you’ll appreciate our refined, flattering designs.
Jaaro Micro-fleece Hoodie \jah-ro\
than traditional hard shells, which means you can go longer and farther before changing-up your layering system.
We all love our down sweaters, but in some situations,
synthetic insulation works better. Like when there’s a
Our athletes love this one. Maybe it’s the rough-hewn texture of
hand-knit wool. Or the contrasting single stripe of color that encircles
the head. Or the subtle but distinct embroidered Sherpa
logo detail. Fleece-lined for itch-free comfort.
