We Are Committed To Repositioning NIMASA –Dakuku
By Godfrey Bivbere
The Director-General, of the
Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety
Agency (NIMASA), Dr
Dakuku Peterside, has said
that the Board and the
management of the Agency
are committed to ensuring that
the quick responds to its core
mandate of advancing
Nigeria’s global maritime
goals.
Peterside, who stated this at a
media briefing in Port
Harcourt last weekend,
stressed that the efforts of the
Board and management have
attracted commendations from
various segments of the
country including the Federal
Executive Council which is
fully committed to the new
drive of the country’s foremost
maritime administration,
noting however that they
would not relent in the efforts
to make Nigeria a leading
maritime nation.
According to him, “we are
putting a lot of structures in
place to ensure the Agency
remains on a sound footing
and our efforts have attracted
commendation from the
Federal Executive Council
(FEC) and stakeholders
within and outside the
maritime sector. We can only
get better in our determination
to make the Agency perform
the functions for which it was
set up and make it the leading
maritime administration in
Africa. This is why we are
continuously working hard
and poised to making
Nigerians reap the benefits of
the sector” he said.
Speaking further the NIMASA
DG said that the
Shippers’ Council pushes
for door-to-door cargo
delivery mechanism
By Godwin Oritse
THE Nigerian Shippers’
Council, NSC, has said
that it was working on a
door-to-door cargo delivery
mechanism with a view to
ensuring the safety and
security of cargo delivery.
Speaking to a group of
maritime journalists, the
Executive Secretary of the
Council, Mr. Hassan Bello,
said that the European
shippers and shippers from
other parts of the world do
not have enough confidence
in the integrity of the roads
in Nigeria adding that this
has made door-to-door
cargo delivery almost
impossible.
Bello also said that the
Council may invoke the
Hamburg rules in this
regard to compel shippers
to deliver cargo to the door
of the consignee.
He explained that until
Nigerian roads were better
maintained, the issue of
damage to cargoes in
transit due to bad roads will
continue to occur.
He also stated that
extortion by men and
officers of the Nigerian
Police from truckers on the
roads has given importers
concerns adding that the
security agents would
unnecessarily delay these
goods on the roads for a
long time.
The Shippers’ Council
boss also said that
insurance on such cargo is
also being worked out so
that the importers can get
some level of respite in the
event of accident or
damage to goods in transit.
Head,
Corporate
Communications, NIMASA,
Isichei Osamgbi, noted that
Dr. Peterside further said that
NIMASA was working
continuously in collaboration
with relevant security agencies
to ensure the protection of
Nigerian waterways and by
extension the Gulf of Guinea.
He particularly commended
President Muhammadu Buhari
for his commitment to the
maritime sector by giving the
needed support to carry out
reforms, policies and
programmes that have had
tremendous impacts on the
fortunes of the industry.
In line with its Corporate
Social Responsibility, the
Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety
Agency (NIMASA) has
partnered with the Nigerian
Heart Foundation (NHF)
to assist Non-Governmental
Organizations, NGOs, in
creating awareness on the
dangers of heart diseases
and the effect on the wellbeing
of people.
This was made known by
the Director General of the
Agency, Dr. Dakuku
Peterside, yesterday at a
press conference held in
Lagos ahead of the NHF
Charity Golf tournament
scheduled to hold on 1st
September 2018, in Port-
Harcourt, Rivers state.
The DG who was
represented at the event by
the Head, Corporate
Communications of the
Agency, Mr. Isichei
Osamgbi, charged Nigerians
UN appoints Amaechi into board
of Road Safety Trust Fund
The United Nations has
appointed and
inaugurated Minister of
Transportation, Mr. Rotimi
Amaechi, as an Advisory
Board Member of the United
Nations Road Safety Trust
Fund (UNRSTF), at the UN
Secretariat in Geneva,
Switzerland.
Media aide to Amaechi,
Israel Ibeleme, made this
known in a statement on
Thursday in Abuja.
According to Ibeleme, as a
member of the Advisory
Board, Amaechi represented
to ensure that they take on
physical exercises as a means
to prevent the risk of heart
related diseases, stating that
heart health is important to
the overall well-being of the
human body.
“Heart related diseases
affects all gender and all
ages and cuts across all socio
economic and geographic
lines”, Dr. Peterside said.
The NIMASA boss stated
further that the Agency is
partnering with NHF as part
of its Corporate Social
Responsibility, CSR, focus
and is delighted to be
working with the
foundation in its drive
towards raising awareness
on heart related diseases.
Nigeria and Africa at the
inaugural meeting of the
Board held recently in
Geneva, Switzerland.
He said that as a member
of the UNRSTF Advisory
Board, Amaechi will play an
important role of
collaborating to reduce the
number of accidents and
casualties; and making real
impacts on global road safety.
Ibeleme said that the
discussions and decisions at
the meeting will greatly
shape the operationalization
of the UN Road Safety Trust
Fund.
around the country and Rivers
state in particular, he expressed
sadness over the incidents but
was quick to add that NIMASA
would work with the National
Inland Waterways Authority
(NIWA) to promote safety and
safer ways of water transportation.
He then promised to personally
donate 1,000 life jackets to jetty
operators in Rivers State as a way
of promoting safety
consciousness.
It should be noted that the Agency
recently reinforced its commitment
to safety of lives and properties in
the maritime sector and this was
evident by the shutting down of
some facilities by the Agency for
not conforming to the
International Ships and Ports
Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
