O’Gara Now’s the time to get your raffle ticket for the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council #14224 8th Annual Charity Raffle. The drawing for the raffle is coming up on Tuesday, June 15, 2016, and you could have a chance to win some great cash prizes, totaling $2,000, including a $1,000 First Prize, $500 Second Prize, $250 Third Prize, $150 Fourth Prize and $100 Fifth Prize. Proceeds help the organization, which began this local chapter in 2007, support community causes. “Our major beneficiaries are the Holliston Pantry Shelf, the Holliston Senior Center, and veteran’s organizations – this year Homes for Troops and possibly another one,” says Tom Anguish, the Knights of Columbus member who began the charity raffle. “Last year, with a combination of our Raffle and our annual Wine and Beer Tasting Night in the Fall, we were able to donate over $20,000,” says Anguish, including $5,000 each to the Holliston Pantry Shelf, Holliston Senior Center and veterans’ organizations, as well as a combined $5,000 in other donations. In total, the Knights of Columbus have been able to donate over $100,000 from the funds of its raffle since it began seven years ago, which translates to over $32,000 for the Holliston Pantry Shelf, $22,600 to the Senior Center, $24,600 to veterans’ organizations, $8,000 to St. Mary’s Parish and $20,000 to other causes, which include among others, Eagle Scout projects, Special Olympics, wheelchairs for veterans, and Wreaths Across America. This year, Anguish is running the raffle with Hal Scaramella, Aaron Pyman, and Ryland Hanstad, three of the 55 members of the Catholic men’s group, most of whom (94%) helped out with the raffle in some way last year, from selling certificates to donating. The group is also looking, for the first time this year, for ways to help support Habitat for Humanity (www.habitatmwgw. org). “They’re as dedicated as I am,” says Anguish, “and if I could raise $50,000 I would. Accepting the check from Knights of Columbus, year after year in front of the crowd at Celebrate Holliston is an honor and provides a great example of volunteerism for people of all ages. We truly appreciate their dedication and commitment to helping our organization fight hunger in Holliston.” Anguish notes that in February, the Holliston Pantry Shelf supported 214 families in Holliston. “The $5,000 we donated lasts almost 2 weeks,” he says. “Their budget is $2,800 a week on groceries, down from $3,700 last year since they partnered with New location. The rest is for rent, the van and other expenses. There’s no paid staff,” says Anguish. The donation to the Senior Center goes a long way as well. “We are extremely appreciative and grateful to have that $5,000. I don’t know if people know how it helps our seniors in Holliston. The money is used for wellness programs, lunches and other special events. There’s no town funding for any of those programs,” says Jean Boulette, director of the Holliston Senior Center, who explains, “Our senior center budget is used only for salaries and operating expenses of the building. (The donation) really helps the seniors. We can offer more free programs, such as the one with Gary Highlander in May and then in June. The Knights of Columbus present their donations to the Pantry Shelf and Senior Center at the annual Celebrate Holliston event. Veterans’ donations are made on Veteran’s Day, and Anguish says other donations are made when appropriate. The Knights of Columbus will sell no more than 6,000 tickets for this raffle, and tickets are $5 each or a book of 5 for $20. You must be 18 years or older to purchase a ticket. There are no refunds, but the sponsor reserves the right to refund ticket price in lieu of awarding prizes if insufficient number of tickets are sold, and taxes are the sole responsibility of the winners, who need not be present to win. In addition to veterans from the V.F.W. and the American Legion, the parade usually includes Holliston Police, Holliston Fire, school and other bands and scout groups.
