Deb Moore, chair of the Pinecrest Golf Course Advisory Committee, remembers it well. “I had read an article on the front page of the Metrowest Daily News that this was coming before the town, and I initiated a grassroots movement in town. We got a petition and got 750 signatures in three days and went before a Board of Selectmen’s meeting. So many came they had to hold the meeting up for 30 minutes while people checked in,” Moore remembers. The petition encouraged the town of Holliston to exercise its right of first refusal and purchase the land. Once the town decided to purchase the property, the next step was figuring out the best way to run it. Moore was selected to chair the committee of seven that would research how it would operate. “I was only non-golfer and the only female at the time. We looked at about 10 other golf courses in the New England area and made a proposal to selectmen on how to run it, which they adopted, and they still use that model today,” she says, noting that the golf course is leased to Johnson Management and the clubhouse restaurant is leased to John Ficco. With this model, rather than being supported by the town, the golf course brings $50,000 to $60,000 to the town’s general fund every year. And it boasts a big change. “Over that course of time to the present, we’ve done numerous capital improvements,” says Moore, who is on the committee along with Larry Wise, Bob Smith, Sylvia Stickney and Chrysso Lawless. (There are two open spots.) “We have built the new clubhouse, pro shop, new maintenance building. We’ve put in two parking lots and a septic system (completed in 2001), built a practice range, the best in the area, all sodded.” Moore notes that the committee even refurbished a well at the top of the practice range, and then had the pond on the golf course dug out to make it deeper. “We pump water from the well to the pond, and put in a new irrigation system to the course, with water that is in the pond.” The golf course also features new tees and boasts a tree planting program that adds not only beauty, but safety for golfers as well. Deb and John Moore have also put a lot of sweat into beautifying the course. When asked, Deb Moore concedes that the work she has done for the golf course is all voluntary. “Over the years, I’ve probably put in thousands and thousands of hours, since 1987,” she laughs, and adds that she is still not a golfer. What she is, however, is a lover of flowers. “As I was doing projects, I thought I should start planting flowers to spruce the place up. I started doing that more than 25 years ago,” says Moore, who says she has worked alongside her husband, John, who is the “muscle” of the flower-planting duo. “I couldn’t do it without him,” GOLF continued on page 13 Join us for a fun-filled summer of dance! The effort began with simple planters and hanging baskets on what Moore calls “the shack of a clubhouse we had.” After the new clubhouse was built, she had a vision of a white fence with plantings on both sides, and when that came to fruition, she says, “I started getting carried away, putting window boxes on decks, and planters, and doing walkways, and then I have flowers planted on all 18 holes.” Caring for the plantings takes up so much of the Moores’ time that the couple, who own a vacation property, often find that they must take turns retreating to their summer home in order for one of them to take care of all the plantings. “It’s just us, and then we have to water. Watering takes probably four days a week, and then of course we have to fertilize, and we have to go out and shop for the plants,” says Moore. The effort has paid off. Not only does the property look exceptionally beautiful, but America in Bloom judges gave Pinecrest awards for their efforts twice. In addition, Deb Moore was recognized as a Celebrate Holliston “Citizen of the Year” in 2001. Moreover, Moore derives a lot of satisfaction Atrius Health Names Dr. Bradley Denker as Chief of Nephrology Atrius Health, in Newton, Mass., is pleased to announce that Dr. Bradley Denker, of Holliston, has been named as the organization’s Chief of Nephrology. Dr. Denker has worked at Atrius Health since 2000 when he joined its Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates practice. As Chief, Dr. Denker will lead the Atrius Health Nephrology Department, which offers comprehensive care to patients with various kidney-related problems, including chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, kidney stones, and peritoneal dialysis, among many others. Dr. Denker practices at Harvard Vanguard’s Boston Kenmore office located near Fenway. A graduate of the State University of New York Medical School in Syracuse, NY, Dr. Denker completed his internal medicine residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He completed a one-year fellowship in hematology in the laboratory of Dr. Peter Agre (2003 Nobel Laureate for the discovery of Aquaporins) at Johns Hopkins before completing his nephrology fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1988-1992. Dr. Denker is also an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the clinical chief in the renal division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. from seeing what the golf course, located right in her back yard as it abuts her property, get use from the town. ”Quite a few people ski, skate and snowshoe, so it gets used all four seasons, which is nice,” says Moore. “So many people from town of all ages golf there, from the very youngest to our senior citizens,” she says. “It’s a very busy place.” One of Moore’s favorite things, she says, is seeing “people from the town up there enjoying themselves. Sometimes in our busy lives, we don’t get to enjoy ourselves or enjoy our neighbors.
