Abstract
This report is a part of the final bachelor project, at the education as Bachelor of Technology Management
and Marine Engineering conducted at Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering. The project is
completed, in cooperation with the company EC Power A/S, in which the author has completed an intern-
ship during the sixth semester.
EC Power A/S is a manufacturer of mini combined heat and power plants, also called CHP-plants. Their
products are based on a gas engine and an electrical generator, named XRGI.
This report describes the financial benefits in connection to the exploitation of surplus heat from the pro-
duction of XRGI-plants. To determine the financial benefits for the company, the rules and regulation re-
lated to the use of process energy from smaller CHP plants are studied.
The financial consequences of utilization of surplus heat and whether is it profitable to sell the surplus heat
are described. The company’s natural gas consumption is used to calculate how much surplus heat there is
produced by the production of the XRGI-plants.
With the utilization of surplus heat it is calculated how much the EC Power´s annual energy consumption
can be reduced. The study also shows how big an investment is needed, to take advantage of the surplus
heat and how EC Power can achieve a grant for the project.
