I feel honoured by the words that Erlands dedicated to
the Latvian National library in an interview published in
Latvian major newspaper Diena on June 17, 2006:
„Director Andris Vilks has developed the library up to
the Western standards; however, however, its development
has natural limits. It is scattered and in its present
shape can no longer be developed. Moreover, these buildings
were not purpose-built for the library.”
The laying of the foundation-stone of the new Latvian
national Library is scheduled for November 18, 2007.
We have brought to Copenhagen a model, flythrough
and digital presentation on the library and the project.
Without repeating the facts included in the audio-visual
materials, I’ll just add that the model reveals some other
qualities.
The windows of the reading rooms face the North, the
Daugava side, it means that the direct sunlight will not
flow into the reading rooms, but they will be sufficiently
light. We hope that the city-scape of the Old Town and
the Daugava River will serve as an inspiration, not as a
detractor. The atrium in the centre of the building, just
like in the Black Diamond, will provide to the whole readers’
zone natural light. The core of the collection, up to
the eleventh floor, is placed besides the atrium, also in
the centre. All work stations are located in the southern
part, which will give the staff convenient possibilities of
communication among themselves.
Thank you! Andris Vilks
