Indledning
Abstract
Theory of Mind is a popular research field at modern developmental
psychology. This paper contains a description of the three major theories
in this field; the theory-theory, the theory of simulation and the modular
theory. Additionally it includes the basic neurology concerning Theory of
Mind, including a differentiation in relation to empathy.
The main discussion is the validity of the theories of Theory of mind. The
discussion will have its focus at the methods used to capture the
phenomena. This discussion leads to the conclusion; the existing theories
on the subject can be said to be build on pseudoempirical research. This
conclusion has implications for the clinical psychology concerning autism
spectrum disorders.
The paper additionally contains an introduction to ecological psychology
and its method as an alternative way to capture the phenomena that human
beings are able to understand others mental states and emotions. The
ecological psychology perspective makes it possible to capture the social
and cultural aspects of the phenomena.
Motivationen til at skrive denne opgave kommer fra mit arbejde med børn med autisme
spektrumsforstyrrelser (ASF). I den forbindelse er jeg stødt på begrebet Theory of Mind (ToM),
som værende disse børns største vanskelighed. Når jeg spurgte ind til ToM, har det ofte resulteret i
vage formuleringer. Nogle sidestiller det med empati, andre beskriver det snarere som en ren
kognitiv evne, der ikke involverer emotioner.
Mit formål med opgaven er at afdække hvilket fænomen eller fænomener ToM dækker over, samt
undersøge hvordan sammenhængen er med ASF diagnosen.
Begrebet ToM optræder første gang hos primatologerne Premack & Woodruff i 1978. De satte skub
i forskningen, der i dag primært kendes fra udviklingspsykologien (Carruthers & Smith 1996). I
opgaven vil spørgsmålet om, hvorvidt ToM er unikt for menneskearten eller også findes hos andre
primater ikke blive behandlet. Jeg vil sætte fokus på, hvad begrebet ToM dækker over hos
mennesker. Den generelle definition af ToM er, at det er evnen til at forstå andre menneskers
mentale tilstande og repræsentere disse metakognitivt, dvs. tage en andens perspektiv (Doherty
