Air exchange in the drying room
Depending on the capacity and setup of the drying cabinet,
it can be a good idea to replace up to 10% of the
total air volume per hour.
During drying with the FIX drying system the air in the
drying room absorbs more than in traditional pinning.
This is due to the shorter drying time, and the fact that
the moisture from the skin must be dried out, as nothing
significant is removed by absorption in the pinning
sleeve.
Quality of the skin
As in all other drying methods, the result depends on
the quality of the skin. The skins must be removed at the
right time, the inner sleeve must be used and they must
be meticulously scraped.
If you have skins that are particularly thickly matted or
poorly scraped, we recommend that you:
• Tumble your skins in clean sawdust for at least 2
mins. on the leather side, in order to draw
extra fat out of the skin and thus compensate
for the poorer skin quality.
• Use a FIX inner sleeve, which absorbs surplus
fat.
• Note that greater friction occurs with the use of a
long inner sleeve, and this reduces the size of the
skins.
Drying time
Under the conditions described the drying time is 2-3
days for males and 1-2 days for females. The drying
time varies, depending on the skin type/quality and
conditions in the drying room.
The drying time for spring males can be as much as
four days. If the skin is not dry after three days, it is a
good idea to release the skin so that it lies loosely on
the board for the last 24 hours.
