Exclusive production of the n=2 S-states in He-like uranium
In the presented experiment we concentrate on the process of K-shell ionization in 378 Mev/u U 8 9+ −→
N2 collision. The obtained spectra are entirely governed by an intense single L −→ K transition and a
broad continuum distribution. Since we are dealing with He-like uranium produced by K-shell vacancy
production of the Li-like species, the broad continuum can be explained by the two-photon decay (2E1) of
the [1s1/2, 2s1/2] 1 S 0 level. Consequently, the single Kalpha line observed arises exclusively from the M1
decay of the [1s1/2, 2s1/2] 3 S 1 state. To the best of our knowledge, no other process occurring in high-Z
ion-atom collisions is known with such a high state selectivity. This also means that the 2S-electron stays
passive during a collision leading to K-shell ionization because no decay from the neighboring excited
P-states is observed. This effect gave us also the unique possibility to measure distorted lines from decay
of the n=2 S-states in He-like uranium.
Bound molecular and free electron wave-packets in intense laser fields
Bound molecular wave-packets:
Time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with femtosecond pump-probe and molecular
beam techniques is used to map the vibrational wave packet motion of a dimer (Na2) along the internuclear
coordinate with sub-Angström spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. Using intense laser
pulses the influence of high laser fields on the molecular potential is detected sensitive to the internuclear
distance.
Free electron wave-packets:
Interferences of free electron wave packets generated by a pair of identical, time-delayed, femtosecond
laser pulses which ionise excited atomic potassium are observed. Two different schemes are investigated:
threshold electrons produced by one-photon ionization with parallel laser polarization and Above Threshold
Ionization (ATI) electrons produced by a two-photon transition with crossed laser polarization. The
results show that the temporal coherence of light pulses is transferred to free electron wave packets thus
opening the door to a whole variety of exciting experiments.
QED theory of transition probabilities and line profiles in highly charged ions
L.N. Labzowsky, A. Prosorov, A. V. Shonin, I. Bednyakov,G. Plunien, G. Soff
A rigorous QED theory of the spectral line profiles is applied to transition probabilities in few-electron
highly charged ions. Interelectron interaction corrections are included as well as radiative corrections.
Parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitudes with effective weak interactions between the electrons and nucleus
are also considered.
The full QED theory for the transition probabilities is based on the S-matrix approach or via employing
the two-time Green function approach.
We apply the most general QED line profile approach to the derivation of expressions for transitions
probabilities in HCI with radiative, interelectron interactions and weak interaction corrections.
Präzisionsspektroskopie an berylliumartigen Xe50+ Ionen
In diesem
Appearance and disappearance of second Born effects in the (e,3e) reaction on He
We demonstrate, both experimentally and theoretically, quantitative manifestation of the second Born
effects in the angular distributions of two ejected electrons produced by a 500 eV electron impact on
the He atom. The second Born contribution, due to subsequent interaction of the projectile with the
target, is most prominent for glancing collisions with small momentum transfer. However, these effects
are absent for hard knock-out collisions with large momentum transfer.
Snapshots of coherent nuclear motion: D2+ in ultrashort laser
Fast ionization of D2 leads to the coherent population of many vibrational states of D2+. Usually, only
the squared absolute values of the vibrational state amplitudes, known as Franck-Condon factors, are
observed since insufficient experimental time resolution averages out all coherence effects. We propose a
2
Coulomb explosion imaging method to visualize the coherent motion of bound wave packets using ultrashort
(5 fs), intense pump-probe laser pulses. With this type of experiment decoherence times in the fs
to ps range could be directly measured providing essential information for coherent control.
12 a.u. kinematisch vollständig untersucht.
Appearance of non first-Bron effects in (e,3e) on helium
We analyze (e,3e) processes on helium, with one fast and two slow electrons in the final channel, where
strong deviations from a first-Born description were reported recently (Lahmam-Bennani 2001). The four
particle continuum is described in different approximations leading up to a 6C wave function which takes
all two-body Coulomb interactions into account. It is shown that deviations from a first-Born description
arise from two different effects which are important in two different energy regions.
Interference Blockade in the electron transport through organic molecules
Using the Landauer conductance formalism, we found dramatic differences in the electron transmission
through the trans and cis isomers of stilbene. The reason for this effect can be traced back to an interference
mechanism of the electron taking different pathways along the second phenyl ring. This suggests
a straightforward conductance control in such molecular systems.
X-ray transitions studied for decelerated bare and h-like uranium ions at the ESR electron
cooler
Here we report on X-ray spectra induced by spontaneous capture of free electrons into decelerated bare
and hydrogen like uranium ions which we measured at the cooler section of the ESR storage ring. The
most intense lines observed in spectra can be attributed to direct transition of electrons into the K shell
of the projectile ions and to characteristic transitions (From L to K shell). Radiative recombination lines
into the K shell of bare and H-like uranium can be exploited for measuring the two-electron contribution
to the ground state binding energy in helium-like uranium. The goal is to probe for high-Z ions boundstate
QED corrections which are of the order of alpha 2 . Besides the dominant characteristic (L to K)
transitions, the strongly reduced bremsstrahlung (due to the low cooler voltage applied to the decelerated
ions) allowed us to observe for the very first time RR transitions into the L shell as well as the balmer
radiation located at the low energy part of the spectra.
Multiple ionization mechanisms in strong laser fields
Multiple ionization of He, Ne and Ar in ultra-short (25 fs) intense 800nm laser pulses has been investigated
using a ‘Reaction-Microscope’. High-resolution recoil-ion and electron momentum distributions
have been recorded over a large range of light intensities from below 10 14 W/cm2 up to several 10 15
W/cm2. The results are discussed in terms of ionization mechanisms with emphasis on target specific
features and on the transition from non-sequential to sequential double ionization as the laser intensity
increases.
Two-photon ionization of heavy few-electron ions
Peter Koval, Stephan Fritzsche and Andrey Surzhykov
We theoretically explore the ionization of the heavy few-electron ions within the framework of relativistic
pertirbation theory. In control to previous investigations, we have applied Green’s function approach
to evaluate the infinite summation over the whole spectrum of the atom or ion. While, however, the
Coulomb Green’s functions are known analytically for hydrogen-like ions, effective (one-electron) Green’s
functions must be constructed numerically for multi-electron atom.
We present and compare the total two-photon (non-resonant) ionization cross sections of both, hydrogenand
helium-like ions.
The elimination of body-frame singularities in the separation of three collective angles in
quantum N-body problems
The appearance of body-frame singularities in gauge potentials when three collective angles are separated
by means of Wigner D-functions is a fundamental difficulty in the quantum N-body problem. We show
that the use of the over-complete basis of minimal multipolar harmonics allows these singularities to be
avoided at the expense of increasing the dimension of the resulting system of coupled equations describing
the internal motion of the system.
Standard turbomolecular pumps show typically one annular active intake area on the high vacuum flange
side (single-flow pumps). The central circular part of the inlet of the compressor turbine is blind for
pumping. The new design proposes a central opening of a turbomolecular pump all along the axis. This
central bore can be used e.g. for mounting of feed throughs, manipulators, windows or for coupling to
further vacuum devices, in particular also for enclosing tube-like vacuum systems. This design allows a
multi-use of a pumping port at a vacuum vessel without reducing there the pumping speed. Moreover,
the new design is ideal for axial or radial differential pumping arrangements as e.g. needed for all gas jet
like set-ups or other pressure reduction stages.
The electron-electron interaction studied in strong central fields by resonant transfer and
excitation with H-like U ions
Electron-electron interaction is studied for only two electrons in the strongest possible atomic fields (Za
1). A quasi-free electron from a hydrogen gas target is resonantly captured into a Lj subshell of a fast
H-like U91+ ion by simultaneous excitation of the strongly bound K electron also into a Lj’ subshell
of the projectile, with j and j’ the total angular momenta 1/2 or 3/2 of the electron of concern. This
5
esonant capture and excitation process, KLjLj’-RTE, is mediated by electron-electron interaction. It is
the atomic equivalent to dielectronic recombination (DR) and yields to a doubly excited He-like U90+
** ion that stabilizes- almost exclusively - via the emission of two K x-rays, first a K hypersatellite
(Kai-H) and then a K satellite (Kai’-S) transition. The K x-ray emission characteristics associated with
one-electron capture! ! in collisions of U91+ ions with an H(2) target is studied for the three resonance
groups of the KLjLj’-RTE and one off resonance energy, i.e. in the energy range between 100 to 135
MeV/u. The total cross section for the first resonance group KL1/2L1/2 confirms the importance of
the Breit contribution to the interaction. The angular distribution for the Ka2-H transition (j=1/2) is
isotropic in the ion system whereas the Ka1-H transition (j=3/2) indicates to a strong alignment for the
3/2 electrons in the doubly excited states for the second resonance group KL1/2L3/2. The experimental
results are in agreement with full relativistic calculations including the generalized Breit interaction.
Improved test of relativistic time dilation by laser spectroscopy on fast ions
Heavy ion storage rings provide fast ion beams with very high spatial stability as well as low divergence.
This, together with modern techniques of high-resolution laser spectroscopy, constitutes the main ingredient
for a modern version of the classical Ives-Stilwell experiment, in which the relativistic Doppler formula
and, hence, the time dilation factor is tested by the measurement of a Doppler-shifted optical line. An
experiment at the TSR storage ring in Heidelberg employs saturation spectroscopy on a beam of singly
charged lithium ions at v=0.064c and improves the upper limit for deviations from special relativistic
time dilation by an order of magnitude. The present status as well as the investigation and control of
systematic errors are presented.
Adsorbtion of Hg on metal surfaces
The theoretical description of the adsorption on surfaces represent a big challenge especially when the
atoms involved are very heavy such that the relativistic effects play an important role. The adsorption of
Hg on different surfaces Pd, Pt and Au has been studied using a relativistic molecular program developed
in our group, which solves the relativistic Khon-Sham equations with the use of various density functionals.
To determine the adsorbtion geometry all the three possible position (top, bridge and hollow) of
the adsorbtion are considered. We present energy potential curve and the dissociation energy is compared
with the experimental value for Pd and Au surfaces.
Coulomb explosion of DNA bases
J. de Vries, R. Hoekstra, R. Morgenstern, T. Schlathölter
Modeling radiation damage on a macroscopic level has reached a high level of sophistication. However, for
a full understanding of the processes involved and for a realistic modeling the molecular pathways have to
be investigated on a microscopic level. Within the track of the primary radiation, hyperthermal electrons
as well as singly and multiply charged ions are formed. We studied the interaction of the latter with
RNA/DNA bases (uracil, thymine, guanine). From the flight-time differences of two correlated fragments
in coincidence with an emitted electron we obtained the kinetic energy release for particular dissociation
channels. For C q+ (q = 1 − 6) we found surprisingly high kinetic energies of the fragment ions as well
as unusual shapes of the islands in the coincidence plots. This indicates a two body Coulomb explosion
of the intermediate multiply charged molecules as a first step followed by extensive fragmentation of
these intermediates. To drive this processes to the extreme, electron removal and subsequent Coulomb
explosion of nucleobases driven by Xe q+ q = 5 − 25) was studied. Such very highly charged ions affect
the molecules quite similar as strong laser fields, i.e. short interaction time ( 10fs) as well as high electric
field ( 0.05 a.u.). It turns out, that the original location of the fragment within the molecule strongly
affects the corresponding coincidence patterns.
Design study of a high-current electron gun for electron-ion collision experiments
W. Shi, J. Jacobi, H. Knopp, S. Schippers, A. Müller
We report a design study of a high-current electron gun producing a ribbon-shaped beam of a maximum
electron current of 1.2 A at 3500 eV. The electron gun offers features especially desirable in electron-ion
collision experiments.
The gun is designed for the energy range of 10-3500 eV. It consists of ten electrodes. The cathode has a
cylindrical emission surface of a height of 5 mm with a radius of curvature of 9 mm and a length of 60
mm. By suitable potentials on the electrodes, effects of space charges are counter-balanced and a parallel
beam is realized in the interaction region. The beam size in the interaction region is 2 mm*60 mm, and
the current density reaches 1.0 A/cm2 as a maximum. The total beam travel length is about 9 cm. The
gun can operate at different modes corresponding to different electrode potentials, e.g., with or without
a potential trap in the inetraction region.
Festkörpern (hier speziell Be) präsentiert. Im Zentrum der Untersuchungen stehen Elektronentemperaturen
in Ionenspuren.
Polarization studies in the radiative recombination of highly-charged bare ions
The radiative recombination of free electrons into bound states of bare highly–charged ions is studied
within the framework of the density matrix theory. Special emphasis is placed, in particular, on the linear
polarization of the emitted x–ray radiation. It is shown that linear polarization which is measured out
of the reaction plane (i.e. in the non–coplanar geometry), is sensitive to the incident photon polarization
and, therefore, can be used to determine either the polarization of the electron target and/or the
projectile ions. Relativistic calculations are carried out for the Stokes parameters of the recombination
photons as they result from the capture of a free (completely polarized) electron into the K–shell of bare
uranium U 92+ ion.
Polarisation studies of radiative recombination transitions into high-Z ions
Polarisation of K-REC (K-shell Radiative Electron Capture) radiation was studied at the GSI ESR storage
ring using 4x4 planar germanium pixel detector.
Polarisation studies of radiative recombination transitions into High-Z ions. For radiative electron capture
(REC) occurring in collisions of high-Z ions and light target atoms, a very first photon polarization
study has recently been performed at the storage ring ESR. For this purpose a 4x4 Germanium pixel detector
array has been used. The photon polarization of the REC transition was derived by exploiting the
polarization sensitivity of the Compton process, i.e. via measuring the Compton scattering probability
with respect to the scattering plane. First preliminary results will be presented which already indicate a
strong polarization of the REC photons.
Control of interferences in an Autler-Townes Doublet: Symmetry of control parameters
Coherent control beyond population control and spectral interferences is demonstrated on the interferences
and intensity of the two Autler-Townes (AT) components in the photoelectron spectrum of K atoms
using a sequence of two intense time delayed femtosecond laser pulses. Photoelectron spectra were taken
at various delay times between the two laser pulses and at different laser intensities at a fixed delay time.
With respect to the interferences in the AT doublet the role of time delay and the laser intensity is interchangeable
for (n+0.5)pi excitation. Strong laser fields or the optical phase of the delayed laser pulse
allow the quantum mechanical phase of an atomic state to be manipulated in a symmetrical fashion.
The observations are discussed in terms of a two level model coupled to the continuum. For suitable
combinations of the laser intensity of the first pulse and the time delay, the second laser pulse leaves the
excited state population unchanged.
Winkelabhängigkeit der Röntgen-Strahlung beim KLL-RTE-Prozess (Resonant Transfer
and Excitation) an U 91+ -Ionen
