(In)Compleat Kieler Part 1 1/10/06 2
The (In)Compleat Kieler
In March 2005 I compiled a consolidated catalogue of painted sets, group figures, individual
figures and full-round artillery produced by Aloys Ochel of Kieler Zinnfiguren. That
catalogue was based on various lists I had acquired in the 1960s and Dr. Egon Krannich’s
invaluable Kieler Zinnfiguren II (2003). It contained corrections to some of the catalogue
numbers and offered very provisional English translations along with the original German
catalogue descriptions. It was posted on the BFFS website as “The Compleat Kieler”.
I began adding to and updating the catalogue every time I came across a set that did not
appear on any of my available lists, and it soon became clear that my Compleat Kieler was
very “incompleat”. Various collectors, especially in Germany, helped immeasurably by
providing me with their own lists. I am particularly grateful to Marbod Gerstenhauer for
sending me his list, and Robert Franz, who sent me a CD of earlier Kieler Sorten- and Typen-
Listen. I have therefore been able to use Sorten-Listen C (31 December 1928), I (31 March
1932), D 1 (c. 1934), E (31 December 1929), F (c. 1963), Neuheiten-Liste D (30 June 1929),
Neuheiten der Kieler Zinnsoldaten (1 April 1941), Typenlists dated between 1955 and 1971,
and the illustrated Sonderfigurenliste issued by Edith Kroschewski (née Ochel) some time in
the 1990s. My grateful thanks also goes to Karl-Werner Rieger, the webmaster of the KLIO
website, not only for his assistance in some translations, but for also reassuring me that a
strict adherence to the printed word of the catalogues was unnecessary.
Kieler issued lists for their painted sets and figures (Sortenliste), for individual unpainted
figures used in the sets (Typenliste), and for their diorama series (either painted or
unpainted). This compilation is therefore in three parts. Part 1 presents the catalogue listings
of painted sets, battles, series, special figures, group figures, and full-round artillery and
vehicles. Part 2 gives the catalogue listings of individual (unpainted) figures, and Part 3 gives
the catalogue listings of (unpainted) individual figures in the diorama series.
Despite the expansion of this new edition, I am aware that is still a very (In)Compleat Kieler.
All corrections (e.g. misnumberings, misidentification, and typos in the English or German),
suggestions for improved translations, and additional information will be gratefully received
and can be sent to douglas@wendoug.free-online.co.uk.
