antreten.
Men’s lacrosse is a quick and dynamic team sport with ten players per team. The ball is about the
size of a tennis ball and is made of hard rubber. A team scores when the ball makes it into the
opponent’s goal. The game is divided into four quarters of 20 minutes. The rules of Women’s lacrosse
differ slightly in that no body contact is allowed and the strings of the rackets are more level. This
requires greater skill in carrying and passing the ball. In Women’s lacrosse a team consists of twelve
players and a game is divided into two halves of 25 minutes.
The game was invented by the Indians of the American northeast. It had been played there from the 15 th
century to settle arguments between tribes and to prepare fighters for battle. Lacrosse is pronounced
“Thewaarathon” in the Mowhak Indian’s language and means as much as “little brother of war”.
Originally 100 to 1000 players played at once on large fields, and games often lasted several days. The
ball was made of bone, hide, or wood and had to be placed in the opponent’s goal, which usually was
the area between two large trees or along the side of a large boulder. In the middle of the 19 th century
European settlers began to get interested in the game. In 1856, the Montréal Lacrosse Club was founded
in Canada.
Sport
At first, lacrosse was played only at a few colleges in the northeast of the USA and in Canada. Word
of the game soon spread out and by the year 1900 there were numerous schools on the east coast that
offered lacrosse as part of their schedule. At the same time, the game was introduced to England,
Australia, and New Zealand, and it still enjoys a huge popularity in those countries today. The sport
was introduced to Germany as late as 1990. Today there are several leagues in Germany, a men’s as
well as a woman’s national team, and so-called U19 teams (teams with players under the age of 19),
which compete at world championships.
