In the times of high Kuchmism I wrote on this topic as follows: “Here he is, this
writer. His readership continues to get smaller, it already is exclusively composed of losers
just like him. His language becomes tapered around him, it already is no longer a means of
understanding, but a fortress, or, to say it more precisely, a shell. His future—this last refuge
of a graphomaniac—remains unjustified by anything.”
But a little further in the text hope got its way: “I surmise that not so little in fact
remains for him—to strive to write well. In lumpenized society (today I would write — in the
“biomass”), where ideas do not rule, but instincts, the role of the writer remains the same. It
always is the same. There is one peculiarity—he must always be aware of the fact that he is
unlikely to be heard. However, this does not remove from him the obligation to write well.
This certainly is an obligation before himself, but not just that. Because for him hope remains.
Hope that is possible even after Chornobyl.”
Today I can repeat approximately the same thing: hope that is possible even after
revenge. Though, did I not myself write yet in February 2005, in the heat of the postrevolutionary
honeymoon, that “so we are forced always to start again from the very
beginning”?
This is a good matter of course—to always start from the beginning. This, it turns
out, is an extraordinarily sweet and delightful perspective, this combination of Sisyphus and
Masoch.
You are thrown off the summit of your illusions again, once again you are free,
your hands are untied, once again you hate power and you say everything about it you want,
with a single striving—to do it as much harm as possible. This is again like being reborn for
another karmic incarnation.
Moreover, for some reason you are sure that this time you will be better heard and
understood.
