harles Ives began his three-movement orchestral cycle Three Outdoor
CScenes in 1906 with Central Park in the Dark, followed by The Unanswered
Question (1908) and Hallowe’en (1914). The first two movements of
the work share a common musical structure, layering groups of instruments
above a wash of strings in polytonal and polyrhythmic structures.
The resulting lines, however, are quite opposite, forming a vivid image of
urban nocturnal life in Central Park in the Dark and impatient, interrogative
and abstract imagery in the The Unanswered Question. The subtitles of
these movements [‘A Contemplation of Nothing Serious’ and ‘A Contemplation
of a Serious Matter’, respectively] indicate that Ives saw a close
connection between them. The Unanswered Question was initially entitled
‘A Cosmic Landscape’ – the cosmic counterpoint to the realist, life-affirming
scene achieved in Central Park in the Dark.

beiden Teile haben die gleiche musikalische Struktur: Über eine Klangfläche
der Streicher schichten die übrigen Orchestergruppen polytonale und
polyrhythmische Strukturen ungeduldig fragend und abstrakt bei The
Unanswered Question, als realistische Momentaufnahme urbanen nächtlichen
Lebens bei Central Park in the Dark. Die Untertitel zeigen, dass Ives
zwischen den Stücken eine enge Beziehung sah. Er nannte beide Contemplation:
Central Park war ein „Nachdenken über nichts Ernsthaftes“ [„A
Contemplation of Nothing Serious“], The Unanswered Question hingegen
hatte eine „ernsthafte Angelegenheit“ zum Thema [„A Contemplation of a
Serious Matter“] und sollte ursprünglich auch „A Cosmic Landscape“ heißen
– kosmischer Gegenpol zur sehr realen, lebensbejahenden Szenerie,
die Central Park in the Dark klangmalerisch beschreibt.
