(In)Compleat Kieler Part 3 1/10/06 2
The (In)Compleat Kieler: Part 3
Parts 1 and 2 of the (In)Compleat Kieler listed Kieler Zinnfiguren’s painted sets and figures and
the individual (unpainted) figures used in those sets. A separate list of the diorama series was also
included in Part 1.
This compilation of individual figures used in the diorama series is drawn from Typenlistes
issued in the 1950s and 1960s. There are some omissions, as it lacks the ‘March Past before
August the Stout’, Vollrath’s ‘Armistice at Vignal’, and many of Hinsch’s dioramas. Should I
obtain copies of any or all of those lists in the future, I will issue a revised and expanded part 3.
The dioramas are listed here according to editor, where known. The two principal editors were
Wolfgang Vollrath and Bruno Hinsch, but Otto Gottstein was the editor of two dioramas based on
Karl May’s popular adventure novels. Short biographies of the editors, engravers and designers
can be found in both volumes of Egon Krannich’s Kieler Zinnfiguren, 1 as well as descriptions and
photos of many of their dioramas. I have identified the designers, too, where possible. Hinsch
originally marketed many of the figures listed here in painted boxed sets under his own imprint
before they were taken over by Kieler Zinnfiguren. His ‘Babylonian’ series, for instance, were
originally sold as Assyrian.
As with the first two parts, the English translation here is very rough. Words I am unable to
translate are left in bold in the German text and marked by ellipses in the English text. Any
corrections will be gratefully received (send them to douglas@wendoug.free-online.co.uk).
