Geboren 1949 in Petschenga, Oblast Murmansk. Lebt in Moskau. Born 1949 in Pechenga, Murmansk Region. Andrey Monastyrsky graduated from the philology department of Moscow State University. He worked as an editor at the Moscow Literary Museum. In 1970, he began to make serial structures and compose minimalist audio pieces, while his work with objects and installations began in 1975 and 1989, respectively. From 1976 on, he devised and led most of the projects of the Collective Actions group. Throughout the 1980s he worked on Trips to the Countryside, five volumes documenting the activities of Collective Actions. He took part in the Apt Art exhibition series and the Club of the Avant- Gardists. Monastyrsky is the founder of the Moscow Archive of New Art, or MANI, and has compiled five MANI files in collaboration with Joseph Backstein and Sabine Hänsgen. In 2003, Monastyrsky was awarded the Andrey Bely Prize for literary merit. Participant of numerous contemporary art exhibitions in Russia and abroad. Lives in Moscow. Like Ilya Kabakov, Monastyrsky is a leading figure of the Moscow Conceptualist School. His work centers on text and audio materials, and he views it as literature and poetry in the broadest sense of those terms. Actions and their material elements are essential components of this verbal field. As for Monastyrsky’s rare objects, they tend to be either physical artifacts from the happenings of Collective Actions, tools for implementing his own actions, or elements of installations whose meaning becomes clear only when that context is restored. 102
