Depuis Noël 1952, Friedrich Ritter parcourt en
tous sens les régions à Cactées de l’Amérique
du Sud, du bassin de l’Amazone à la Patagonie,
et jusqu’au lac de Buenos-Ayres, le plus grand
lac du Chili (46° Sud). A l’aide de toutes sortes
de moyens de transport, mulet, canot indien,
bateau à vapeur, auto, chemin de fer ou avion,
il explore des régions dont certaines n’avaient
jamais reçu la visite d’un botaniste.
Mon exploration des cactées du Pérou 1956/57 Perou ->
était un grand succès! 12 Matucana, Trixantho-Pérocereus
senilis (la plus belle découverte de l’année).
2 nouvelles Espostoa: superba et ruficeps
de l’enfer de Marañon; un nouveau genre Diploperianthum.
J’ai continué l’exploration approfondie
des cactées du Chili: 2 genres nouveaux:
Rodentiophila, Pilocopiapoa, Eulychnia nouvelles,
beaucoup de Copiapoa, Horridocatus etc.
Je suis heureux de pouvoir proposer un choix
aussi varié, et d’offrir aux amateurs, aux jardins
botaniques et aux établissements scientifiques une
occasion unique d’enrichir leurs collections, et
je leur souhaite une complète réussite! FR.
Au cours d’une de ses explorations solitaires.
dans le sauvage massif de l’Illimani. R. est
obligé de traverser un cours d’eau qu’un violent
orage a transformé en un torrent impétueux.
D’un promontoire rocheux, il jette son pesant sac
tyrolien sur l’autre rive; l’un des coins du sac
plonge dans l’eau, le courant s’acharne dessus
et finit par l’entraîner. R. court désespérément
le long de la berge dans l’espoir de parvenir
à le rattraper. Le sac flotte au début, mais il
s’alourdit et s’enfonce de plus en plus. Son sac!
Tout ce qui le rattache au monde civilisé: son
pain, son appareil photographique, ses cartes
(souvent incomplètes et inexactes), son argent
et ses couvertures.
Les quartiers de roches s’entrechoquent avec un
bruit sourd dans le lit du torrent, le sac devrait
bientôt apparaître. R. court un peu plus bas,
pas de sac. Il remonte et finit par l’apercevoir,
coincé entre deux rochers. Tout son contenu est
trempé et couvert de boue, le pain est immangeable,
les couvertures ruisselantes. L’appareil
photo est heureusement intact, mais il faut lahaas

IV. Result of the Expedition
of Friedrich Ritter through South America
Since Christmas 1952 Friedrich Ritter is exploring
the cactus regions of South America. From
the tropics of the river Amazon to the Argentine
Patagonia and Lake Buenos Aires, the largest
Chilean lake (46th degree of latitude), by mule,
Indian canoe, steamer, motor car, railway, aeroplane
he explores tracts of land where — partly
— no botanist has set foot before.
My exploration of the cacti of Peru in 1956/57
was very successful.
The former species refound, 12 Matucana, the
most beautiful discovery of the year: Trixanthocereus
senilis (far more beautiful than blossfeldiorum),
2 new exciting white/red Espostoa:
superba and ruficeps from the hell of the
Marañon (upper reaches of the Amazon, gnat
ordeal, Malaria danger), a new Genus: Diploperianthum.
The thorough exploration of Chilean
cacti continued. 2 new Genus: Rodentiophila,
Pilocopiapoa, new fine Eulyehnia, — many new
Copiapoa, Horridocactus etc.
The rich choice of seed in this catalogue offers
friends of cacti, Botanical Gardens and scientific
institutions a unique opportunity to complete
their stock of plants. We wish them sincerely every
possible success and pleasure in this pursuit.
On one of his One-Man-Expeditious into the
wilderness Fr. Ritter wants to leap over a raging
torrent swelled by heavy thunderstorms on the
upper Illimani. From a projecting rock he first
throws his heavy rucksack over to the other side.
With one corner of it it lands in the water. The
current pulls at it and tears it with it. Dispairinglv
Ritter runs along the shore, ahead of it, in
the hope to be able to catch it. First it floats
on top of the water, then is becomes heavier
and sinks deeper and deeper. His rucksack! The
only thing that still connects him with civilisation,
from which he is days’ journeys away: His
bread, photographic cameras, maps (which often
are wrong), paper money, blankets.
At the bottom of the river bed rumble the lumps
of rock which the waters have torn with them;
soon there will be a rucksack jolting among them
and into the nearby immense river. Again he
runs a little way ahead, but the rucksack does
not appear. He runs back and sees it jammed
between rocks. Everything is soaked through by
the loamy broth. — The bread unfit to eat, the
blankets wet and very heavy. — The cameras,
however, undamaged. The bulky parcel of paper
money, too large to put into the pocket
— Inflation! — is being cleaned on the shore
and dried.
Darkness is coming on. The snowfields of the
never-conquered Illimani (7000 m), which years
ago became the grave of German explorers, show
up red in the evening sun. — It is getting
icy cold. To spend the night in the open with
the wet things is impossible. He has to walk
all night long and, loaded with the heavy, wet
rucksack, even has to conquer considerable differences
in altitude.
