The Sleepbox is an elegant unit, which integrates inconspicuously into its surroundings
Die Sleepbox ist ein Projekt des russischen Architektenbüros
Arch Group. Ziel ist, Menschen an öffentlichen
Orten wie Bahnhöfen, Flughäfen, Ausstellungsgeländen
u. ä. unkompliziert eine kurzfristige Ruhestätte oder
Schlafmöglichkeit direkt und kostengünstig vor Ort zu
bieten. Das Projekt befindet sich in der Testphase.
Who hasn’t had the feeling – I'm exhausted,
with just half an hour of sleep I
would feel much better. Who knows the
pictures of people at airports and stations,
lying huddled up on benches or on the
floor, waiting for a connection, or using
the waiting time to sleep. These scenarios
inspired Russian architects Mikhael
Krymov and Alexey Goryainov, along with
their business, Arch Group, to develop the
Sleepbox. It is a mobile box with a floor
space of 2.5 x 1.6m and a height between
2.5 and 3m for the basic version. Made of
MDF panels – a DIN standardized wood
fiber material – as well as metal and glass
fiber synthetics, the smallest version
offers space for one bed. There are also
variants with two or three beds.
Practical and directly on-site, the Sleepbox
can be used in airports, stations,
on exhibition grounds, in large shopping
centers or other public spaces. In warmer
The Sleepbox is a project of the Russian architect firm
Arch Group.
The goal is to offer uncomplicated short term resting
places or places to sleep locally and cheaply in locations
such as airports, stations and exhibition areas. The
project is in its testphase.
regions it can also be used outside. In
this way, those searching for peace can
find a comfortable place to sleep, instead
of searching for an often expensive and
distant hotel room.
A folding table offers the chance for
undisturbed work, in cases where not
sleep but rather quiet to work is desired.
The windows can be darkened with blinds
and offer perfect privacy protection. If
desired, the Sleepbox can also be equipped
with tinted windows, color variable
lighting, multi-media-centre (TV and Touch
Screen), Wi-Fi router as well as a safe and
individual magnetic card locking system.
The cost for a single Sleepbox starts at
7,000 Euros. This price drops with larger
purchase quantities. The production and
delivery time is around three months, depending
on the size of order. The architecture
firm calculates that the Sleepbox
appropriate occupancy, at 10 Euro per
The vision of the architects reaches from
the single boxes, to a larger number in
public spaces and a Sleepbox hostel. In
mid August 2011, the first Sleepbox was
presented as a prototype and at the turn
of the year the first production unit started
with 60 Sleepboxes. In mid February
2012 they will be set up in Moscow to be
tested by the public. Then, when you are
tired you can simply pop into a crate.
