Das Eigenleben der Bilderklärung. Georges Mathieu und die Strategien des Zeigens in Pariser

Projektbeschreibung
Das Promotionsvorhaben widmet sich visuellen Strategien in Künstlertexten der Jahre 1945 bis 1965.
Verschiedene Formen der visuellen Inszenierung des gedruckten Wortes werden auf ihre historische
Entstehung in der Nachkriegskunst hin befragt. Das Forschungsprojekt setzt sich zum Ziel, den
bildhaften Künstlertext an der Schnittstelle von Werkvermittlung und Kunstwerk sowie in seiner
intermedialen Form näher zu definieren. Genealogien, Strategien und Rezeptionen von typologischen
Modellen wie der Liste, des Diagramms, des Typogramms etc. bilden die drei zentralen
Scharnierstellen des Forschungsprojektes. Ausgangspunkt und erstes Kapitel der Arbeit ist die
Analyse der schriftlichen Auseinandersetzung der Künstler mit ihrem bildenden Werk im Kontext der
europäischen Nachkriegskunst. Das zweite Kapitel zeichnet die Verfahren und Funktionen der
Aneignung intermedialer Textformate im Kontext des transatlantischen Diskurses zwischen der Ecole
de Paris und der New York School nach. Der dritte Teil der Arbeit befasst sich mit der Rezeption des
beschriebenen Phänomens, insbesondere mit der Rolle des schreibenden Künstlers und den Displays
der ausgestellten Worte.

Project description
The doctoral thesis deals with the imagery of artists’ texts dating from 1945 to 1965. Various forms of the
visual production of the printed word are examined with regard to their historical origin in post-war art. The
aim of the research project is to define in detail the pictorial artist’s text at the intersection of work
mediation and work of art, and in its intermedial form. Genealogies, strategies and receptions of
typological models such as the list, the chart, the typogram, etc., are the three linchpins of the research
project. The work starts with the analysis of the written argument of the artists with their creative work in
the context of post-war European art. The second chapter traces the processes and functions of the
acquisition of intermedial text formats in the context of the transatlantic discourse between the Ecole de
Paris and the New York School. The thirt chapter deals with the reception of the described phenomenon,
especially with the role of the writing artist and the displays of the exhibited words.
