Crossing Boundaries
A hundred years ago World War I, the ‘primal catastrophe of the 20 th century’
(George Kennan) broke out in the middle of Europe. The League of Nations
was a reaction to the war and World War II followed its political demise. The
Europe of belligerent conflicts appeared to be overcome by the founding of the
European Union.
In the face of financial crises, social upheavals, migratory flows and ‘New Wars’ (Mary
Kaldor) Europe must re-invent itself.
Yet what political idea can guide it? Where is the European community of states to
draw its borders in the 21st century? Where does it contribute to the elimination of
borders which divide people from people? Europe’s open geography underlines its
character as a political continent of transitions, a continent yet seemingly barely aware
of the opportunities within its grasp. The passing of Europe’s imperial history means it
must seek a new global mission. As far as foreign affairs are concerned, Europe’s unity
exists, if anywhere, on paper and internally it provokes political conflicts. National
interests play an increasingly important role. Set against this backdrop what is the
significance of Europe’s cultural and religious diversity for its identity? What role will
Christianity play in the Europe of the future?
The Salzburger Hochschulwochen 2014 moves away from a historically specific
location and enters an area of European issues. Salzburg’s rich religious history and
vibrant contemporary culture scene have created a European transfer space. The focus
is on the past of the old Europe and transcends national frontiers. The SHW 2014
inspires European exploratory activities.
