Who would want to argue aga<strong>in</strong>st a church be<strong>in</strong>g a sacred space? Each and every<br />
religi<strong>on</strong> has certa<strong>in</strong> basic features pla<strong>in</strong>ly c<strong>on</strong>stitut<strong>in</strong>g each <strong>on</strong>e specifically. Am<strong>on</strong>g<br />
them be<strong>in</strong>g the most diverse acts of meditati<strong>on</strong> and prayer, certa<strong>in</strong> holy periods and<br />
celebrati<strong>on</strong>s of special feasts and of course the nam<strong>in</strong>g of holy places. Even if Christianity<br />
sets itself somewhat apart <strong>in</strong> this respect, not know<strong>in</strong>g holy spaces from with<strong>in</strong><br />
itself, and the Christian church build<strong>in</strong>gs not be<strong>in</strong>g part of its <strong>in</strong>nermost nature, the<br />
community of Christians cannot do without c<strong>on</strong>gregat<strong>in</strong>g, pray<strong>in</strong>g, celebrat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
commemorati<strong>on</strong> of Christ and listen to Gods gospel together. Locati<strong>on</strong>s and rooms<br />
<strong>are</strong> therefore needed, deriv<strong>in</strong>g their dignity and sanctity from the acts happen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
with<strong>in</strong> them.<br />
It seems remarkable that especially those be<strong>in</strong>g somewhat distant from the church as a<br />
community of faith, want to attribute sanctity to a church build<strong>in</strong>g under any circumstances.<br />
Sanctity derives from charisma, design and use as places of worship. Am<strong>on</strong>g<br />
other th<strong>in</strong>gs sacral spaces <strong>are</strong> thus first and foremost places of speech.<br />
Sankt Peter <strong>in</strong> Cologne is furthermore a noted space for cultural utilisati<strong>on</strong>. In its<br />
<strong>in</strong>carnati<strong>on</strong> as <strong>“</strong>Kunst-Stati<strong>on</strong> Sankt Peter” the church is an <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>ally renowned<br />
venue for c<strong>on</strong>temporary music and art. Its appeal derives from the <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong> of liturgy,<br />
music and art <strong>in</strong> a dialog of the systems of religi<strong>on</strong> and art, critically scrut<strong>in</strong>is<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
simultaneously respect<strong>in</strong>g their respective idiosyncrasies. The c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ual celebrati<strong>on</strong> of<br />
church services sets Sankt Peter apart from other art <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> (mostly<br />
disused) churches, the art be<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>sistently given such extensive space thus <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the liturgy mak<strong>in</strong>g it different from other art exhibiti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a sacral envir<strong>on</strong>ment. Art<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g provocati<strong>on</strong> not an illustrati<strong>on</strong>, art be<strong>in</strong>g a challenge not a fulfilment of illustratory<br />
needs.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cerith</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wyn</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Evans</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a man of the word us<strong>in</strong>g the potential of other <strong>are</strong>as of art like<br />
literature and movies without imitat<strong>in</strong>g them, not exploit<strong>in</strong>g them as aesthetical<br />
strategy, but form<strong>in</strong>g new correlati<strong>on</strong>s, new forms of visible and readable signs and<br />
thus new mystical-poetical spaces. This last spr<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wyn</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Evans</str<strong>on</strong>g> placed such a space<br />
<strong>in</strong>to Sankt Peter. Many visitors of the Kunst-Stati<strong>on</strong>, but also those just visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the church for prayer or church service, have been captured by the complexity and<br />
poetical power of his <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Admittedly it requires a certa<strong>in</strong> curiosity and above that a certa<strong>in</strong> measure of<br />
unbiasedness to surrender to the cosmos of the artist. Too much prepossessi<strong>on</strong> prevents<br />
us from putt<strong>in</strong>g mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the th<strong>in</strong>gs we see. Too many questi<strong>on</strong>s possibly<br />
lead us <strong>on</strong>to the false track. Only the lust for aesthetics and a sensitivity for poetry<br />
facilitates change.<br />
To be seduced <strong>in</strong> the room of the word of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cerith</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Wyn</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Evans</str<strong>on</strong>g>, to view the world<br />
and <strong>on</strong>e’s own life poetical has great appeal. The artist raises not even the slightest<br />
demand, his words never pretend<strong>in</strong>g to be <strong>in</strong> the same league with the mean<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
what has been decl<strong>are</strong>d and <strong>in</strong>terpreted here for centuries, he bows to the power of<br />
the word. Through shift<strong>in</strong>g the mean<strong>in</strong>g of the words, by enigmatically and subversively<br />
putt<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> the room, his art enables change.<br />

How even more appeal<strong>in</strong>g is the art of a poet <strong>in</strong> these circumstances, of an artist, plac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
great importance <strong>on</strong> a word as a word, of a magician, shift<strong>in</strong>g realities and amaze with<br />
the complexity of his work.
