4SUMMARY IN ENGLISHThe human right to adequate food and the human right to water arepre-conditions for all other human rights because they are the basis oflife and survival. This study shows hunger as a silent global catastrophe.It describes the chances and limits of the rights-based approach in overcominghunger. At the centre of the reflexion are ethical and theologicalarguments for the importance of the right to food and water which areinseparably linked to the obligation of governments and also individualsto care for these rights.The following chapters show how these rights are becoming moreand more binding in international law and why they should become evenmore enforceable. The author proposes concrete solutions to strengthenthe right to food and water: the right to food has to be guaranteedthrough fair trade with respective WTO rules, Corporate Social Responsibilityof enterprises as well as social, religious, political, economic andtechnological instruments which are equally important.
