Erika Lincoln ca / www.lincolnlab.netCanneryThe Cannery is the video component of a sculptural object that uses movingimages and the sounds of over-flowing water as a metaphor to describe a psychologicalstate of being in the world. In the gallery a suit standing 5‘5“ made of clear and white plastic hangs from theceiling. Projected onto the suit is an image of a body in a similar plastic suit beingfilled with water, the video starts at the ankles and ends at the neckline. As thewater in the video rises up the body, the projection also rises up the plastic suit.Once the water reaches the neckline it spills out in a rhythmic pattern parallelingthe breathing body inside the suit. The sounds of forced breaths and spillingwater come out from the suit, from four audio speakers placed in the arms andlegs. The video loops indefinitely, suggesting an ongoing struggle between therising water and the body inside the suit.Through the Cannery I subject my body to the pressure and weight of water. Theresult is a physically shifting to accommodate the layer of water but ultimately itsforce upon my body is to great to contain. I begin to labour under the weight andbreathing becomes difficult until I squeeze the water out through the neckline ofthe suit by my strained breaths. The action becomes a visual manifestation ofmetaphoric drowning.2001, video, color, NTSC, 2:00 min. Date and place of the premiere: 2001,Vancouver Underground Film Festival.
