Develop the business location and create new jobs
The overriding function of Memmingen town with a catchment
area of some 261,000 inhabitants of the south of the crossborder
Danube-Iller region becomes particularly clear when it
comes to the economy. With its trading, commercial and service
companies, every day the town is the destination for more than
14,000 commuters travelling in to work or taking advantage of
the town‘s attractive shopping facilities.
The basis for the positive development in recent years is the
balanced structure of highly productive medium-sized firms
operating in the world market, a successful local authority policy
with targeted politico-economic measures and the very efficient
road and rail network.
Autumn 2004 saw work starting on filling the 12.3-kilometre
A96 gap between Memmingen and Erkheim. The project is to be
completed by mid-2008 at a cost of roughly 50 million euros. This
will upgrade the Memmingen motorway intersection and further
reinforce Memmingen‘s role as South Germany‘s traffic hub.
The electrification of the Munich–Memmingen–Lindau railway
line enshrined in the Federal Traffic Route Plan edges ever nearer.
Federal Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee announced the
implementation of this project in early July 2006 at the 5th Memmingen
Transport Conference with a projected completion date
of 2013 and the involvement of all parties concerned. This would
cut the Munich–Zurich travelling time to 3.15 hours by rail.
Memmingen is therefore the transport centre of the Allgäu and
Middle Swabia by both road and rail.
The Allgäu Airport Memmingen has been developed through the
great commitment of the local business community and funding
from the Free State of Bavaria into a regional airport, thereby
ensuring transport by air for the business location of Memmingen
and the entire Allgäu.
The focus of our town‘s local authority‘s efforts is on further
strengthening the local market. Memmingen‘s intention is to
offer companies the best location conditions, thus ensuring a
common future. Everyone benefits from this policy: companies
and investors alike. Their decision to opt for Memmingen is made
easy for them. And the good folk of the town can look to the
future with optimism, secure in their jobs that will still be needed
in the future.
This becomes crystal clear in view of Memmingen Town Hall‘s
efforts to secure transport links and thus ensure that Memmingen
continues to be attractive as a business location. Only in this way
can jobs and, above all, training posts be created, secured and
even further expanded in situ. What this entails is an extensive
supply of childcare facilities, which is especially important and
essential for women in their bid to take on jobs and be able to
combine work and family life.
Training means investing in the future. The town‘s school facilities
offer every opportunity for upward mobility, thereby securing
a qualified skilled workforce for the economy. Memmingen‘s
prospects have been further improved by its success in attracting
another tertiary education institute to Memmingen. In March
2006 the Steinbeis Hochschule Berlin set up the Business School
Memmingen as and independent Steinbeis transfer institute,
offering two dual Bachelor courses specialising in Business and
Engineering.
To companies, investors, guests and inhabitants alike, Memmingen
is an attractive place for business, culture and tourism. It is
prepared for the long-term development of the town, particularly
in view of the demographic shift.
