solutions and answers to any problems, enquiries or questions.
The newly presented shopping guide shall thus offer an additional tool which gives a
16
17
Jurorinnen immer auch versucht haben,
Kreationen auszuzeichnen, mit denen
neue Wege beschritten werden und die
damit der Entwicklung der Schmuck- und
Edelsteingestaltung neue positive Impulse
geben.
Dass dabei mit dem Urteil der Allgemeinheit
oftmals keine Übereinstimmung
erzielt werden kann, versteht sich
von selbst. Dies wird nicht nur hingenommen,
sondern manchmal gerade als
Voraussetzung für eine auszeichnungswürdige
Arbeit angesehen.
33. Deutscher Schmuck- und Edelsteinpreis 2002,
Thema: „Wer bin ich? - my innerself“
German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones Idar-Oberstein
and
German Young Talent Competition for Gemstone and Jewellery
Design Idar-Oberstein
As early as the 60s efforts were made to find out what the Idar-Oberstein industry
could possibly do in order to further advance the design and quality of jewellery and
gemstones, and to create a wider awareness for these in the public. The result of all
considerations was in fact the foundation of an international competition, supported
and held by the Federal Association of the Precious Stones and Diamond Industry and
– up to 1996 – also by the Industrial Association for Jewellery and Metalware.
The German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones faced its first baptism of fire in
the year 1970, with the Young Talent Competition following in 1989.
In order to approach and motivate as many participants as possible, it was decided to
compete in three disciplines in the first years of the competition, i.e., each year was
headed alternatingly by three mottoes. The first year’s headline was “Gemstone
Jewellery in Gold and Silver”, followed by “Costume Jewellery” and finally, in the third
consecutive year, “Gemstone design”. Having been subjected to several changes and
alterations in the next couple of years, for the most recent years the competition procedures
alternated their focus between “Jewellery Development in Relation with the
Gemstone“ and ”Working with Gemstone design“ respectively on a yearly basis.
Since any competition is only as good as the jury who is judging it, the organisers
Award ceremony „33 rd German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones, Idar-Oberstein 2002“
have always put considerable emphasis on an excellently qualified international
panel of jurors, usually five to seven representatives of different fields of the jewellery
trade and industry and the interessted public.
The relatively high monetary rewards in comparison with other international competitions
have been providing an additional material stimulus for all participants.
In the past it has been demonstrated that the respective judges always also strove to
award such creations, which marked new approaches and gave innovative and positive
impulses to the development of gemstone and jewellery design.
20
21
33 rd German Award for Jewellery and Precious Stones, Idar-Oberstein 2002, 2 nd Prize, Regina Hiestand
This fact is not only accepted, it sometimes almost seems to be an essential requirement
for a work which will be awarded a prize.
Looking back it can be stated that the Idar-Oberstein Jewellery and Gemstone Competitions,
which have been entered by famous and important participants from all over
the world, are among the most important competitions of the industry.
For Rhineland-Palatine, the district of Birkenfeld, the city of Idar-Oberstein and, last but
not least, for the regional gemstone and jewellery industry the German Jewellery and
Precious Stones Award as well as the Young Talent Competition are unique showcases
and at the same time excellent promotional campaigns on an international level.
sicher größte Fachzeitschrift Jeweler’s Circular Keystone Idar-Oberstein
als „the world center of coloured stones“ bezeichnen ließ.
Jahrhundert waren Idar-Obersteiner beteiligt.
Serien feiner Edelsteine in Handarbeit.
Industrie sondern weltweit behauptet.
Synthesen, technische Steine, Diamantwerkzeuge
Trotz alledem sollte man optimistisch bleiben.
Ebene zusammenarbeiten: Vom Achatschleifer, Edelsteinbohrer,
Schmucketui. Dies alles zusammen auf kleinem
Raum dürfte wohl einmalig sein auf dieser
Welt.
Die Anziehungskraft von Idar-Oberstein für den
Fachbesucher liegt darüber hinaus in dem
Vermögen und der Bereitschaft der ansässigen
Firmen, ihre Kunden mit Qualität, Seriosität und
großer Kompetenz zu bedienen und damit ein
verlässlicher Partner zu sein.
The German Gemstone and Diamond Industry on the
National and International Marketplace
In spite of the many political and economical disasters which occurred
in the course of the 20th century, the German gemstone industry with its
centre at Idar-Oberstein managed to reach and hold a position which was aptly characterised
by the internationally most renowned special trade paper Jeweler's Circular
Keystone by naming Idar-Oberstein "the world center of coloured stones". Of course,
this traditional centre looks back to centuries of tradition.
In the Middle Ages in the so-called Holy Roman Empire there lived a considerable amount
of gemstone cutters in such business hubs like Nuremberg, Augsburg, Prague,
Milan, Florence, to name only a few. The workshops in these cities generally did not
survive the historical development or have been reduced to meaninglessness. However,
in spite of many wars and destruction to be faced, the cutters in and around Idar-
Oberstein managed to carry on successfully through numerous ups and downs and drawbacks
which this region had to encounter.
A decisive step forward for the industry was achieved in fact by the emigration of
many people from the region, which led to the more or less accidental discovery of
gemstone occurrences in South America, which in turn motivated travels between
Idar-Oberstein and Africa, Asia, or Australia.
Actually, people from Idar-Oberstein have been involved in almost all discoveries of
new gemstone occurrences in the course of this and the previous century. Thus they
provided the basis for making Idar-Oberstein the probably only gemstone
centre in the world, where any existing gemstone is cut or traded.
Trading Rough Stones
The indispensable trade with rough stones provided the basis for Idar-
Oberstein's development towards a world wide centre for coloured gemstones, and it
was this sector which was mainly responsible for enabling the region to face political
and economic disasters as well as the steadily critical tendencies of the last few
years. Only by means of the permanent travels of the rough stone dealers to all the
existing, potential and new gemstone occurrences have made it possible to inspect
and check up on the offer. In order to do so, quick and reliable information is essential.
Knowing the mentality and traditions of the producing countries in question is
another important requirement relevant for any success. - Just as important is expertise
and experience for sorting the qualities, for tapping, sawing and preparing the
lots. The right and appropriate assortment and cobbing of rough stones will decide
about how quickly and at which profit or loss these may be sold.
The rough stones industry reliably supplies the German gemstone centre by holding
partnerships in mines or by means of long-term contracts so that there is a guaranteed
steady flow of the necessary raw material. The large amounts stocked by the
industry offers the opportunity to live through periods of political or economic unrest
which may occur in the various countries of origin without negative influence on the
pricing.
38
39
Production
The roots of the industry go back to the gemstone
occurrences which were once discovered in
the mountains of the Saar and Nahe region. Up to the
end of the 18th century these were the only source for raw
material. And the chemical-physical characteristics of the material available influenced
the methods of work and also the nature of the tools and equipment applied
for this purpose.
Natural sandstone used for vertically rotating wheels contains silicon oxide, and determined
the kind of gemstones considered suitable for cutting. Only when the harder
gemstones from the new occurrences came to Idar-Oberstein, the art of lapidaries
employed horizontally rotating Diamond wheels which allowed to work all kinds of
gemstones, i.e., besides coloured gemstones also diamonds were cut now. The necessary
techniques for cutting diamonds were acquired at Antwerp and Amsterdam since
the considerably higher hardness of diamonds required essentially different techniques
than working with coloured gemstones.
So as early as in 1886, the first diamond cutter founded a workshop at Idar-
Oberstein. The large amounts of diamonds available and the fact that many people
here were already skilled in techniques for cutting coloured stones, which were basically
related to the new skills needed, all this contributed to a flowering of the diamonds
industry, which at its peak provided thousands of jobs. However, in the recent
fifty years the diamond industry boom was throttled e.g. by the development of
wages in the federal republic of Germany. Therefore nowadays mainly larger stones
and fancy cuts are produced here, all kinds of jobs where the expertise of the cutter
is more important than a low price for labour.
Concerning Coloured gemstones, Idar-Oberstein has developed first of all into a centre
for those stones which originate from new occurrences or where there was no suitably
developed processing facility in the respective country of origin. This way, the
local cutters gained high sophistication in skills and valuable experience, and today
it has become almost a routine to send newly found stones to Idar-Oberstein even
from those countries where there exist local gemstone cutting facilities,
since the expertise of Idar-Oberstein cutters gives them the edge
over their competitors wherever judgeing and processing stones
is important. These skills have not been mastered in the course
of decades by overseas centres.
The economic recovery experienced by the Federal Republic of
Germany however, made it more and more difficult to train sufficient numbers of workers
in this skill. Besides it could already be expected that in spite of the advantages
for cutting and polishing, the level of wages to be paid in Germany would make mass
fabrication by manual labour too expensive in the long run. Quite a few companies
therefore began to introduce technical and mechanical support into the process which
as a final result became more and more automated. This not only made production
less expensive, it also improved the quality of the cut.
40
41
But although this modern and inexpensive mass production or
processing of gemstones has become a standard, Idar-Oberstein
still has to face the challenges of world-wide competition especially
by such countries where the labour costs are extremely lower.
However, the wealth of experience and knowledge collected over centuries of faceting
gemstones of any kind, still defends the market position and provides the basis
for the Idar-Oberstein region's superiority in the medium to top end qualities.
Agates and Others.
In the water-driven cutting mills along the rivers and rivulets in the region, agates and
jaspers have received their smooth finish for centuries. In later days this was also performed
generally in smaller cutting mills where the above-mentioned sandstone
wheels were employed, but then driven by electrical motors. The German gemstone
industry supplied a large percentage of the
demand to the world market in this field. In
the course of years, however, conventional
methods of work could not keep up with the
competition for lower priced stones from
countries where the level of wages is much
lower.
But for good qualities, special cuts and individual
and unique pieces the Idar-Oberstein
region still holds the top rank due the
world wide unachieved know-how and concentration
of processing facilities here.
Bowls and objets d' art.
Many museums and churches all over the world display cups, bowls and other objects
which were crafted from the local material in this region, and which were for example
sent out to the numerous Royal Courts in former times. Fortunately there are still
some skilled craftsmen around who continue providing excellent work in this field. In
this respect, then, Idar-Oberstein holds another top rank in the world, which the artists
have even managed to expand in the last thirty years.
Engravings.
A very important part of the gemstone industry is engravings of various kinds. This
traditional craft, which has kept on developing at Idar-
Oberstein since the middle of the 19th century,
manages to achieve the status of art in its best
examples. The products offered here can easily
compete with the best pieces ever crafted in
ancient eras, they are not only comparable but in
the craftsmanship demonstrated even surpass the
older specimen. There is no any other gemstone centre
42
43
in the world where it is possible to
purchase cameos, intaglios, coats-ofarms,
small three-dimensional objects as
well as all other kind of engravings in
such a perfection.
Fortunately the training in this field has
been very popular during recent years, so
that there is ample motivation to speculate
hopefully about future development.
Jewellery
In the 18th century there existed already
large workshops, later even factories at
Idar-Oberstein where gemstones were
further processed and made into jewellery.
Numerous goldsmiths and specialised
jewel setters have since then been working in small or larger workshops to produce
unique and individual pieces but also industrially processed jewellery. Also costume
jewellery from Idar-Oberstein enjoys an excellent reputation in the world in spite of
the overall competition. For gemstone jewellery the co-operation of goldsmith and
cutter is of utmost importance, and there is really no other place where the joint
efforts could be combined more easily. In order to further such co-operations and to
provide respective stimulation, the Academy of Gemstone and
Jewellery design and later the Department of
Gemstones and Jewellery design, University of
applied sciences were founded at Idar-Oberstein.
The young talents who trained and studied at
these institutions have enjoyed success not only in
the regional industry but on a world wide level.
Trading cut stones
Production may be a vital and essential element of the gemstone industry. But in
addition to this many companies have for generations kept up close relations with
the different other gemstone cutting and trading centres of all the world. No doubt
the import and sales of cut stones in Idar-Oberstein has considerably increased in the
recent decades and continues to grow. This is no contradiction to the efforts which
have been taken to increase the production by means of better training of the staff
and by developing modern machinery. Idar-Oberstein is in fact the only place where
each and every kind of gemstone found anywhere in the world is cut and traded. Only
by permanent travelling to the various gemstone centres on all the continents
- as has been mentioned in the context of rough stones before
- is it possible to achieve the required expertise and information for
making successful purchases. The unique variety and amount of
rough and cut gemstones stocked at Idar-Oberstein are the basis for
providing quick and efficient customer service, so that clients will receive shipments
and selections very fast. This service for the German, European and world
market is one of the Idar-Oberstein trademarks, and is not offered by
any other gemstone centre in the world.
Once a year "INTERGEM" (Special Trade Fair for Gemstones and
Gemstone Jewellery) is held, another measure to defend Idar-
Oberstein's position as a place for all kinds of gemstones.
Synthetic stones, technical stones and diamond tools
A special section, but by no means a marginal one, is held by
the sector of the gemstone industry where synthetic gemstones
are being produced and processed - for example, laser crystals are grown
which are used for medical tools, technical gemstones (e.g. polishing stones) are produced
and finally also diamond tools (e.g. diamond-coated cutting discs and drills for
work application to metals and gemstones.)
It is in fact these very sectors which have made Idar-Oberstein a competitive player
among high-tech sites. They are an important pillar supporting a unique industry
which has branched out into the most intricate and specialised fields of performance,
thus managing to compete successfully on the world market.
Conclusion
As has been mentioned before the German gemstone
industry has faced and survived centuries of ups and
downs. New gemstone centres with considerable economic
capacities have been created in the recent decades, old
ones managed to rejuvenate. The development of wages in Germany
has brought about decisive changes in the structure of the gemstone industry. The difficulties
involved in gaining funds in this country, where support and assistance for a
relatively small industry like ours are rather scarce, has brought about quite a few
disadvantages whenever we are competing with industries from other countries.
Political unrest and economic difficulties in the countries of origin have contributed
their share to the problems.
Nevertheless, we should remain optimistic:
The gemstone processing industry of the present results from centuries of development
which integrated all jobs and professions involved in working with gemstones:
agate cutters, gemstone drillers, hollow-cutters, engravers, heraldics experts, facetters,
lapidaries, diamond cutters, silver- and goldsmiths, metal smiths, designers and
artists. Here at Idar-Oberstein you will find everything: genuine, synthetic and technical
stones, minerals, cut stones and finished pieces of jewellery, excellent training
and apprenticing facilities, Academy of Gemstone and Jewellery design and
Department of Gemstone and Jewellery design, Universety of applied sciences, development
and production of gemstone processing machinery and tools,
laser-crystal growing, research in the fields of gemstone processing and
working with precious metals, and also the German Gemmological
45
Association, the Laboratories providing
expert's reports and certificates, but also
firms offering jewellery cases. All this is concentrated
in closest neighbourhood and might therefore
well be characterised as unique in this world.
Idar-Oberstein's attraction for trade visitors is also based on the fact that the
local firms are willing and able to serve their clients' needs with top quality, respectability
and incomparable competence, as reliable partners in any respect.
