Anlässlichseines 71. Geburtstages gab Manu Dibango imOktober 2004 im Barbican Centre in London ein Konzertmit seiner Maraboutik Big Band, die er auch zuseinem Auftritt beim Africa Festival mitbringen wirdund mit der er in Deutschland noch nie zu Gast war.Mit dieser Formation spielt Dibango seinen treibendenMakossa und interpretiert zudem noch ein paarStandards wie den Gershwin-Klassiker „Summertime".The saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Manu Dibangois one of the most important musicians of African origin.In 1972, he published his album "Soul Makossa", whichcontained a mixture of African music, soul, and funk. Itmade him a star, especially in the North American soulscene. On the occasion of his 71st birthday in October2004, he gave a concert with his Maraboutik Big Band inthe Barbican Centre in London. This band has not performedin Germany so far and will for the first time appearon stage here at the Africa Festival. Dibango and thisband will be playing Makossa's funky dance sound. Theywill also be performing some standards such as theGershwin classic "Summertime". Moreover,the versatile musician has just published aCD as a tribute to New Orleans, the birthplaceof jazz.
